Audio editing issue- remove ambient room noise

I am doing an audio run thru of my short program (puppets, etc). We had to do some VO work and have noticed the ambient room noise varies from scene to scene. On some it is OK, but others it is quite noticable. Is there a filter I can apply to control that? FC6 Thanks!

If you did this properly and sent it from within fcp, when you save in soundtrack pro and switch back to fcp, it should update properly. Then compressor and into dvdspro

  • Removing ambient traffic noise

I have a project that I would like to remove ambient traffic noise that exists under a subject interview. I witnessed a very cool feature of STP2 at NAB 2007 using the Frequency Spectrum. They could isolate the specific frequency of the ambient noise and delete it. I can't for the life of me figure out how they did it now that I have purchased FC2. It seems to me they were able to view the frequencies in 3D in order to separate and delete the appropriate band. I've used the "set noise print", "remove noise" but that didn't work and they weren't the tools used in the demo. I spoke with Apple Support today and they couldn't come up with the tool I attempted to describe.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've scoured the net, the forum and discussion groups but haven't come up with the solution. Thanks.

Click on the file you want to edit in the timeline, and then click on the "File Editor" tab in the area below the timeline (you could also do this by opening the file directly, which would cause the waveform to appear in the upper middle section of the window.
When the waveform appears, click on the upper-rightmost button in that section, which will switch the display to the spectrum view. Then select the "Frequency Selection Tool", which has the same icon but on the left part of that tab.
Then you can select parts of the spectrum and press delete to remove noise.

  • Weird Audio Editing Issue: Importing Room Tone causes beeps on timeline

Okay, I'm fairly new to Final Cut so I'm sure there's a simple fix for this I'm just missing, but I need some help. I'm working on a nearly complete sequence, using the audio mixing set-up. I tried to import room tone to tracks 7 and 8, and for some reason, whenever I do this, these thin red bars appear in intervals at the top of my timeline, and when I do play back, everytime the playhead hits these red bars, I get two beeps. I can't figure out how to get rid of it. Any suggestions on what's causing this?
    -Jett

More than likely you need to increase the number of tracks fcp can monitor in real time. This setting is in user settings: general under real time audio mixing. Try increasing the number of tracks.
It's also possible that this roomtone settings don't match your sequence settings or are in a heavily compressed format such as mp3. If so, use compressor to convert your tracks to 48k 16 bit (probably).

  • Captivate 4 - audio editing issue (distortion heard once published)

Hi -- I am working on a 17 minute movie with audio on each page (total project size about 60mb).  I recorded the audio outside of Captivate and imported the .wav files (for some reason the .mp3s sounded too tinny).  When I started the project in November I had no problem editing the files (removing sighs/pauses, inserting silences) and adding to the slides.
For some reason in December I started running into issues.  I would go to edit a sound file on a slide, it sounded good when played back, but when I previewed or published the sound file I just edited it would have a layer of sound on top of it making it distorted.  Also, I no longer have the ability to add silence at the beginning and end of the audio file (which I was able to do in November).  I add it in edit mode, can see/hear the pause but when I save and close out those beginning and end silences disappear.
I just got final feedback and was making adjustments on two slides but the same thing happened.  The audio files I edited would sound distorted when played back in swf form.  The only way to save the project was for me to open an old archived version, export that audio, re-import to my production project and it worked fine.  But I cannot edit it in Captivate.  If I do, the distortion gets added.
I am publishing as audio quality: MP3, 96kpbs, 44.10 KHz.
Any thoughts?  I like to edit directly in Captivate and don't want to have to do the extra step of editing the audio in another application.
    Thanks!

    Hi there
If you want to add silence at either end, your first step will need to be to position the playhead ever so slightly away from the true end or beginning. Otherwise, Captivate ever so helpfully discards the silence. So the silence needs to be inserted between the ambient noise.
Actually, this is a nice segue into a technique you may wish to use. Select a section of the ambient noise and paste it repeatedly. This will eliminate the "dead air" you hear with total silence. Sometimes inserting silence is one of those - "the cure is worse than the disease" sort of things.

  • Removing echo/room noise

I have an interview taken in a kitchen which, as a result, has some echo like qualities. Also, the door in the kitchen was open, and I didn't realize that the sounds of the nearby highway would be so distracting. So, with the echo and the highway noise, there is a lot of other noise going on besides the the dialogue of the person being interviewed.
I did a noise reduction but it really didn't help much; it made the audio sound tin-like.
Does anyone know how to reduce such noise???
    Thanks. Gilia

If you have access to Soundtrack Pro you can do some editing there that might help. Although you can 'send' the audio track with issues to Soundtrack directly, I make an .iff file copy of the audio track and open it up independently in Soundtrack.
Select a section of the audio track that only has the ambient sound (street, noise, etc) but no voice. Under Process>Noise Reduction>Set Noise Print you can Soundtrack what is the noise you want to try and eliminate in the whole track.
Then you can select the entire track, do Process>Noise Reducation>Reduce Noise and see if that helps.
There are many other functions under Process>Effects that can help as well. I'll usually do a trial and error process, but you can monitor the results in real time and save that modification as a preset, then use it again in other parts of the interview.

  • Audio Editing Issues

    Hi
Has anyone worked out something for these situations?
1: I have source footage with 2 tracks ... dual mono... wireless mic 1 and wireless mic 2.  I edit the clip into a Project (set up as Stereo out) and need to balance the two audio clips. I can select the clip ... set it to Dual Mono in the inspector... and Pan Left/Right.  But to adjust the levels of the individual channels it seems I have to right click on the clip in time line  and select "Open In TimeLine". Now I see the 2 channels. The Format settings need to re-set to dual Mono and pan settings to Stereo Left / Right .... now I can Pan the tracks and set a Level Envelope curve for each on the timeline... but can't hear the rest of the Program Mix!!!
Is there a way to just get all of  clips's audio tracks to show in the Main Timeline. Expand doesn't seem to do it? Seems soooo basic.
2: If Im editing video and audio into the timeline how do I choose which audio tracks to edit into the program. I see how to select Audio / Video or both .... but if I just want one track?  Do I have to keep switching audio tracks on and off in the Source clip via the inspector?
    Thanks
    Lee

Unless you can balance the two channels in the separate timeline and then mix the combined tracks in the main timeline you don't have a good solution. You can break the clips apart in the timeline, but be warned there is no way to put them back together again short of putting each clip into a compound clip and having to open and close it to work with it. It also creates other editorial limitations.
    2.  Afraid so. You can also switch tracks off and on for ttimeline clips in the inspector.
Audio is very limited in FCPX.

  • Audio Filter to Remove Room Tone

I filmed a seminar and on one take the sound did not go through the board. It only went through the camera-mounted shotgun mic thirty feet away from the speakers and not through the lav mics. Can anyone tell me which filter is best to remove some of the room tone and make the speakers sharper?
    Thanks!

I've been in your situation. Sometimes it's unavoidable when filming a documentary. I think Bias Soundsoap does a terrific job in removing noise and am more than happy to plug them. There's also a pro version which I'm sure is way better than what I've got. But the standalone plugin can be used with most audio editing software, including STP. You might need to order the CD, I'm not sure if you can buy direct download. Check it out here:
    http://www.bias-inc.com/products/soundSoapPro/
After removing noise, and adding a little EQ, I think you'll be very surprised (and hopefully pleased).

  • User can't create, edit, or remove groups and fix I found causes more issues.

    Hello!
I have a user that can't create, edit, or remove groups within Lync client 2013.  I found a fix online that removing the SIP information will fix the issue.  It did but when I do that they have no control over their phone from Lync.  So I
added the SIP information back and then the original issue comes back.  Is there a way I can have both?  We are using the 2013 client but are running Lync 2010 on the server.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
would you please elaborate about the message above you provided? Did "SIP information" mean user profile?
If yes, it maybe the issue of address book sync. you can try to force Lync to immediately download the address book with the following way:
    execute the following command from the Windows Command Prompt run as an administrator;
    reg add HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Lync /v GalDownloadInitialDelay /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

  • Audio Editing Questions In Final Cut Studio 2

    Hi,
Thank you all again for being here!, I have some quick questions about working with audio in fcp 6.02, and Soundtrack. first of all I am wondering if its easier and quicker just to work in fcp with audio, or export to Sound Track Pro? I have a wedding I shot and I had my cam recording 2 different source of audio, one from a balcony, and the other on the floor with different sounds to them. What is the best method to get them to sound nearly the same? In Fcp apply a "Normalization Gain"? I am new to audio editing, and somewhat with FCS, in general. Also in the timeline how can I get all audio clips in sync with the same volume? I was amazed with Soundtrack Pro's ability to take out ambient back ground noise and inference any other trick to get rid on unwanted inferences? Your Idea and experience are invaluable!!!
Thank You All Again, Tim C.

The reason you may not have gotten replies to your "quick questions" is because there are no quick answers. It is certainly easiest to just do the audio in FCP rather than export to STP. If your needs are simple just stay with FCP. However, you mention specialized tasks that STP can do but FCP can't. I am grappling with these same issues. I am a Logic Pro user and it gets very confusing about what tool to use when.
My main message to you is that I just purchased the Apple Pro Training book FCP 6 Beyond the basics and there are 90 pages in two lessons devoted to exactly what you are interested in. I bought it just yesterday and it has already helped me in a number of areas.
    Good luck.

  • Removal of room reverb

Is it possible to remove or lighten a small amount of room reverb from a single voice soundtrack using any of the filters in Soundtrack Pro or any other software?

This might not help in your set up as it depends on how it's recorded, so apologies in advance if this is a red herring.
However I'm often working on clips where the audio is recorded directly to camera, rather than via a mixer with a sound guy riding the levels. The result, in interviews, is that with both mics open, the mic where the person's not speaking at that point will be recording room noise/reverb and an off-mic version of the other speaker's voice.
Simply muting that track in FCP or the audio software will show if this is the case.
As pro cameras mostly default to recording 2 mono tracks, you can kill a lot of the background noise and reverb by using the audio mixer in FCP or adjusting the levels on the time line to take the non-speaker's mic down. It can be fiddly, but the improvement is often dramatic.
If the remaining audio levels for the 'live' mic are too low, you can cut and paste the good audio to the other track (or better still a new track) - pan them both to zero and you should hear a real difference.
It's not always best to take the spare mic levels right down, a bit of room coloration can help make the sound 'real', but that's down to personal choice.
This works with other noises, eg air con, as well as echoes.
An important caveat, though: this doesn't work on cameras or recorders that record both channels to a single stereo file, unless the device can be set to pan audio 100% L and 100% R and was set that way before the take.
Otherwise, you can use EQ, and noise gates/filters. No they are not perfect, yes they can work with care. Exporting to Soundtrack or another audio editor will give you more options.

  • Slightly OT, Audio editing and enhancement tools

    HI,
I know this is a little off topic, but is needed for Audio in CP.
What are the best applications for editing and enhancing any audio in my CP files....is it software by Adobe or Izotope for eample.
I want to get rid of some background noise amp up the volume of the speaker/narrator & enhance the voice tones etc....
I know we have Adobe Audition, but I see that as aminly and editinmg tool rather than the removal of background noises etc, but what do others use for this purpose...?
    Kind Regards
    Ross

Adobe Audition is an excellent tool for removing background noises as well as doing all the other tasks you described.
I think you need to investigate Audition's abilities a little more, as it seems from your post you are still quite unfamiliar with the tool.  There are quite a few good video tutorials about it on Adobe TV.

  • Voice Over, remove light static noise

    Hi All,
I am sorry if there has already been a post on this.
I'm a very new user to any form of audio editing software.
I have some small voice over files that I captured on my camcorder... I have the smallest level of noise that I would like to remove. Is this possible adn if so how do I do it? I have normalised the file.
You can only really hear the noise when you turn the volume right up.
    Thanks for any assistance.
    Regards,
    Katie

    >Ozpeter is right, but I've found that it's more efficient to highlight your section of noise in edit view, then go to Effects > Restoration > Noise Reduction. In Noise Reduction, click Capture Noise Profile and then make other adjustments as necessary.
    Hmm... that's not quite what
    I'd call efficient!
Highlight selection, and hit Alt+N. That's all there is to capturing a noise profile - simple as that. After you've done that, either hit Ctrl+A and open NR, or, just open it and select all from within it.
And if you don't like keyboard shortcuts, it's always worth remembering that in Audition, you get a lot more options from using the right mouse button. And one of these, if you highlight a selection in EV, is to be able to capture your selection as a noise profile directly from there.

  • M-Audio 1814 Issue

I upgraded to Leopard. I've been experiencing a series of crashes that I've traced to the M-Audio Firewire 1814 interface. I installed the combo updates for LEOPARD, and ensured I had M-Audio's latest drivers for the FIREWIRE 1814.
Currently the M-Audio device is plugged into the 400 bus in back of the G5(Late2005)
With TIGER, there was a routine that I had to follow to avoid crashes (e.g. always turn on any firewire or usb peripherals first prior to the M-Audio device). Now with the LEOPARD upgrade, there is no mercy - I've tried everything, including the Hokey Pokey.
    Issues include:
    - Logic Pro 8 (2.02) plays sporadically (if the M-Audio device is removed things runs smooth)
    - iTunes will not play if the M-Audio device is attached. Again, if the device is removed things run smoothly.
    - When either of those two programs do play for any extended period, the BLACK SCREEN OF DEATH comes down and I have to restart.
    - After disconnecting the M-Audio device. The system appears to run normal.
The FIREWIRE 1814 has normally been very good as a MIDI interface and an input/output device.
I'm frustrated. After sorting thru this issue for over a month - I'm still not closer to resolution and I don't have the $$$ to put into a new card.

I think you've already established where the problem lies. The driver for your device is not compatible with the rest of your system.
You say you have downloaded the latest driver, but it might be worth checking the website for known issues & bug reports, & that the driver you downloaded really is the most compatible one for your system.
Also — sometimes these things take time to sort out, so a fixed driver may not appear immediately…
Hopefully, you won't have to ditch the interface just because of a software glitch. That would be chucking the baby out with the bath water!

  • Using Mac, how do I remove the hiss (noise floor)?

Using Mac, how do I remove the hiss (noise floor)?

Hi!  Well, at the most simple, Audition has a noise reduction effect...try Effects/Noise Reduction/Restoration/Noise Reduction (Process).  Highlight a short section of your clip featuring just noise, not any sounds you want to keep.  Turn the amount of NR down on the sliders to, say, 20% and the Reduction to, say, 10dB, hit "Select Entire File" and Okay it.  If the noise is bad, you're best off to do several passes at low processing settings.  Turn up the FFT size (on the Advanced menu) and grab a new noise sample between each process.  FYI, the reason for doing it 3 or 4 times with small increments is that it results in a lot fewer unpleasant artefacts.
However, as others have said, use of Noise Reduction should be a last ditch option, not a normal part of the process.  I have 3 different M Audio interfaces now and none give me enough noise to worry about.  As a first guess from your description I wonder if it's your microphone that's noisy and, if so, no amount of playing is likely to fix it...the noise goes up and down along with the programme material as you adjust the levels.
So...a bit more info and maybe we can make some suggestions for you.

  • So frustrating that nobody knows why. Audio Sync issue.

I have an imovie project of old family footage that was ported over from VHS through a sony dcr pc120e mini dv cam straight through to intel imac via firewire. The imovie project is flawless and the sound is perfectly in sync. ive exported to idvd and when finished the audio is out of sync on the final disk. Now i have been reading about this issue and see that people blame idvd8 but it happens when i make a dvd with my imovie project using toast titanium 9 too. Surely if it plays perfectly as an imovie project there must be a way of transferring to dvd without audio sync issues. If anyone knows a solution or piece of software that will remedy this please please let me know as i have wasted about 12 dvds in various experiments.

    mogreen wrote:

thanks for answering some of my Qs ...
there's one thing, I do suspect, which was a 'source' for sync-weirdness for years.. which is the AUDIO connected to some video.
you told us, video is 25fps, and audio is included 16bit (which is good...)
I assume, adding some NON-conform audio could cause trouble... (as a 12bit audio would cause outofsynciness) .. we do know very little about, how iM08 handles audio+video internally, we 'Silverbacks' had long discussions about really weird side effects as a 'zooming' of dvfiles on export etc. I wouldn't be surprised, if adding some non-iTS, non-48kHz-aiff, non-whatever... causes such an effect.
so, please answer my audio Q from above: source, format, bitrate...?
and just for curiosity: how long is your project in total? hh:min:sec?
    ==edit==
pops into mind: in iM vers3, there was some 'bug', concerning PAL wrong audio and NTSC good audio ... wow < scratching bald head > .. try to contact some wiseguy with better memory..
