Audio file to MIDI conversion

I am looking for advice on how to handle a particular task. I would like to take audio files, mp3 as an example, and 'transcribe' them into MIDI files. I know there is software available to make it easy to do ear transcriptions of audio files, but I'd like to know if there is anything that will actually take such a file and convert it to MIDI information, or, failing that, do an automatic 'audio' transcription, such as one would do with ear, pencil and staff paper.
Thanks In Advance!

Jean-Pascal, I was looking at that plug-in, and it's not the exact thing I'm thinking of. Not sure if it exists at all! I am thinking of a sophisticated transcription tool, that would, for example, take an mp3 file of a Cecil Taylor piano solo and spit out, at the very least, the note values. The details make it a serious software project.
Doesn't seem to exist, but I could still use an effective transcription sofware tool for the 'classic' ear transcription. Variable-speed playback at original pitch is the key. I've not found software that does that which is also functional for users. Any ideas, advice?
TIA

  • How to trigger an audio file using midi...

I'm trying to use the Apple AU Audio File Player to play a 10 second track that's an intro to one of our songs, but the only things that show up under the Parameter Mappings for that channel (the one that the AU Audio File Player is assigned to) are MIDI notes, and none of the midi notes trigger playing the audio file. Is there something I'm missing? Is there any way in Main Stage to play an audio file using a midi trigger?

    seems not a good question

  • Converting Audio files to Midi files.... anyway to do it?

I used to have Opcode Studio Vision Pro and there was an option to convert audio files, like a drum solo or just music, to a midi file so you could take a audio drum pattern and turn it into a midi file and pick your own drum sounds like a TR-909 for the drum pattern.
Is there any function like this in Logic, or perhaps a plug in that will do that? I searched the forum without any luck.
    Thanks

I haven't seen anything like this, but...
For Guitar's mainly... if you plug your guitar into a good pedal which has a midi out set up, you can plug it into your mac and record by playing the guitar using midi... then you can edit it.. works same way as keyboards... I expect you can do the same with drums if you used digital, i'm not sure.
    hope this helps

  • Audio to MIDI Conversion in Logic Pro X

Is there a way to convert an audio file to MIDI in Logic Pro X? It was possible in previous versions via Audio File Editor.

I have described this process in more detail, with screenshots, in this Ask Different answer. Here is a copy of my answer without screenshots:
record an audio clip to an audio track
double-click the clip to view it in the Editor panel
click the Show/Hide Flex button near the top left of the editor window, to the right of the menus
You will be asked ‘Do you want to turn on Flex for track “Audio 1”?’. Confirm “Turn on Flex”.
change the Flex pop-up menu at the top of the Editor from “Flex Time – Automatic (Slicing)” to “Flex Pitch”
right-click the audio area and choose “Set all to Perfect Pitch”
from the Edit menu of the Editor area, choose “Create MIDI Track from Flex Pitch Data”, at the bottom
This will generate a MIDI region with the notes Logic can detect from your audio. You can delete your audio track now.
You will probably want to quantize your notes too, which makes notes start on the beat. You can do this by viewing the generated MIDI region in the Editor panel, selecting all of the notes, and choosing a beat size in Time Quantize at the left. Or you could do it earlier in the process, with the Time Quantize section next to the Flex Pitch editor.

  • Creating new projects from old ones without deleting the wrong audio files!

We did a piano & vocal recording session recently and recorded about a dozen songs. Voice audio files and midi (pianoteq) for piano. At the moment these are organised into three projects according to genre - classical, showtunes and jazz standards. I now want to get each song into its own separate project but while I need to avoid duplicating too many audio files, I'm also scared to death of deleting anything!
Can someone please walk me through how I do this? I THOUGHT I knew and then a dialogue box (thankfully!!) flashed up saying something like, "Are you sure you want to delete these files they are shared by other projects?"
I basically want to "save as" one of the large projects, rename it according to the song title and then delete the other songs from the Arrange. I thought I could then "select unused" in the Audio Bin and it would be cool because the original audio would be in the old (renamed) project . . . but I seem to have that wrong? Or I've missed a step?
Hopefully someone can shed some light!

Open the song. Cut the tracks at the appropriate places. Name the newly created regions with the correct song names. Select all the regions and then the command that turns the regions into new individual audio files. After the files are written, go into the audio bin and select unused. Delete unused. Save as (without resources) "Master Song". Then I'd delete all but the first pair of tracks from the arrangement. In the audio bin select unused again then delete. Logic will dump the unused parts out of the audio bin without deleting them from the drive. save as "First song" Re-open the master song and do this again with the second set of tracks.......

  • Convert AIF osund file to Mid

Does anyone know how to convert AIF sound files to MID? These files are in QuickTime format. Originally 8 bit, but I converted them to 16 bit. Now I just need to make them into the MID format.
I have apps like GarageBand and Logic Express.
    Thanks!
    PowerBook G4 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

What I am using them for has to be in midi format.
Sorry, but neither QuickTime Player, GarageBand nor Logic can convert an audio file to MIDI. MIDI isn't audio, it's just a series of commands to the MIDI device on what note to play and other parameters. There have been a few third-party applications that purport to convert audio to MIDI, but their success rate is quite variable, depending primarily on the complexity of the audio (the more complex, the more difficult it is for the application to determine what notes are being played in what sequence, and hence more errors result). You might find this web site and it's linked sites helpful.

  • Can't export MIDI as Audio file. Any idea what I should have done?

    Hi all,
wonder if anyone can help me out. I'm a "Logic"-newbie.
I recorded 10 "external MIDI" tracks(strings) from my Roland JV 1080 synth module into Logic Pro 9 and now I want to export the MIDI file as Audio but when I go to: File - Export - Track As Audio File, the "Track As Audio File" is gray/ not enabled !! The option-"Export All Tracks As Audio Files " is enabled, but when I try it, it doesn export the MIDI tracks with all the Roland JV 1080 data.It only exports any other recorded "soft instruments"tracks or Audio tracks I've uploaded. Keep in mind, the 10 Midi recorded tracks of strings (JV 1080) are using the same program name/patch, and all 10 tracks are on a single channel. In the Inspector window, it doesn't show the "Bounce" option either. When I started recording the strings from this patch, I used the "new track with duplicate settings"-button,so I could have the same sounding string patch available right away. My Roland JV 1080 synth, is connected to the Midi interface only. Should I also have Audio cables connected from JV 1080's Mix Out to the Audio interface (Apogee-Duet) in order to record directly as Audio?
    Thanks for your time guys!

Thank you as well! Since, you have similar equipment like mine- (Apogee/ Emagic), how do you suggest I connect my devices properly. I got an external  12-channel "Mackie"1202-VLZ Mixer, which has my Roland JV 1080 box and my Kurzweil PC2X controller kyes connected to.These two are also, connected MIDI In and Out -to my Emagic Unitor 8 MKII (Audio Interface). I'm a little confused about the connecting of my Apogee Duet, since it has just 2 OUT's- L and R. What's the best rigging here, so I can hear the Audio back from the JV 1080 and the Kurzweil?
( P.S. The Apogee Duet's OUT's (L& R) are plugged into the Mackie'sStereo Aux Returns (L&R). The monitors are  connected to the Main Outs.)
    I appreciate your suggestions.

  • Best method of wma audio file conversion for iTunes/iphones

best method of wma audio file conversion for iTunes/iphones

    Fazel,
As you know, iTunes for Mac is not capable of processing WMA files.  The two best choices are:
Get access (even temporarily) to iTunes for Windows.  It can convert your WMA files to the format indicated in import preferences.  Use a USB flash drive to copy the files back to your Mac.
Use a 3rd party conversion program.  The one most preferred by Mac users is EasyWMA.
In either case, once you have the converted files, add them to your iTunes library.  Then delete the WMA originals.

  • Have a melody recorder on guitar (AIFF audio file) need to make midi file.

Have a melody recorder on guitar (AIFF audio file) need to make midi file.
so i can change the guitar melody into a synth melody.
    any input?
    thanks, technoreid

You cannot make midi from audio with GB. You'd need a sampler.

  • PPT 2013 Conversion: WMA Audio Files

    Hello-
I do a number of narrated PowerPoint conversions into SWF-created Captivate files.  With the recent upgrade to PowerPoint 2013 for Microsoft PCs, I've noticed that the narrated audio is no longer being converted on Captivate's end because it is WMA format.  Do you know of any setting within PowerPoint 2013 or Captivate that will allow WMA files to be allowed or converted to a whitelisted format?
    Thanks,
    ~Kyle~

    Hello Kyle,
    Welcome to Adobe Forums!
I am afraid that you can only insert audio files with .wav and.mp3 extensions .
If you want to insert your .wma format files you can use Adobe Media Encoder to convert it to mp3 or .wav.
Adobe Media Encoder gets installed with Captivate.
    Thanks and Regards

  • Triggering midi with an audio file

    Hi,
Ive recorded some live drums and unfortunately Im a bit disappointed with the snare sound and would like to use some sample snares I have instead.
Is there anyway to record an audio instrument track using the recorded audio file of the snare so that the beats trigger the sample?
    Thanks.

    Solved the problem,
First it was Ultrabeat as Sidechain trigger... I mixed with two techniques and looped the ultrabeat when it was already looping inside the ultrabeat...
and other sound problems I guess are over cause of leveling the volume correctly,
    while side chaining...
I guess I was too excited to start working with logic, didn't noticed that the audio engine is a bit different than cubase I guess...
still having some minor problems in other logic stuff, but happy that I've solved that issue...

  • Converting audio files to piano roll?

    Hi,
I know how to do this in FruityLoops and I think I've found a way in Logic Pro X, but I was wondering if anyone knew how to do it in GarageBand? Essentially, my roommate and I come up with melody lines and little phrases when we're out and about. We record them with our phones, making the noises with our mouths. Usually, we then come home and have to figure out what each note is and play them on a different instrument. I was hoping there might be a way to take audio files of us mimicking instrument sounds, extract piano roll data from that, and then drop that piano roll into different tracks and to be played by different instruments. If anyone can give me some tips on how to do this in GarageBand, I'd be really grateful. I don't have a Windows PC anymore, so I need to figure out how to do it with GarageBand, or else I'll need to pick up Logic.

unfortunately, while Logic Pro X does offer audio to MIDI conversion, GBv10 does not

  • How can I match tempo & sync of old audio files to Garageband?

    HI all,
Final question and it's a doozy. While I know the "general concepts" for trying to accomplish the following, acutally trying to get it to work is frustrating. At first thought that the new Garageband tempo/playing thing would work but I'm not being successful. Perhaps there are better programs for this. I am moderately aware of the beat/slicing/tempo tap programs -- I just don't have the lets-do-it-detail to make it work.  Here is the goal.
#0 - New DAW file is created in either Garageband or Logic Pro.
#1 - I have old stereo MP3 and AIFF files digitally dubbed from old cassettes, some recorded 30 and 20 years ago. Most were recorded to click track or drum machine. Newer tracks are MIDI but my first tracks are purely audio.
#2 - I drag an audio file (MP3 or AIFF) into either Garageband or Logic Pro. The track becomes an audio track.
#3 -- I need to edit off the beginnings of these tracks. If Garagebands new tempo sync thing is enabled, you can't seem to do this. Once the track is playing -- the tempo should be moderately consistently (The originals often used a Roland TR 707 ??? drum machine). However, the tempo might not be perfect and I might need flexibility.
So, how do I ACTUALLY DO THIS?
#4 - The goal is to get the NEW song template to match it's tempo to the audio track. The song now has the correct tempo that (hopefully) perfectly matches the original track.
#5 - If this works, the old audio track is like an old temp track that is frozen in place.
#6 - I record new fresh tracks against this backing tracking. Voila, I have a newly semi-produced or at least recorded song based on the old recording.
Sounds easy but the devil is in the tricky details. Thanks for any tips, suggestions, references to forums, blogs, YouTube videos or books.
I am open to other software as well.
Thanks in advance. I'll stop bothering you after this. :-)
    John

Attach your welcome audio to an object that is not seen (e.g. a highlight box set to 0%) and use your Advanced Actions and variables to HIDE this object ON SLIDE ENTER if the user returns to the same Menu slide at a later point in the course module.
This should mean that the first time the user gets to that slide, the audio will play.  But all subsequent times they return to that slide, the object will be immediately hidden on entering the slide, which will mean that the audion does not play and all the user sees are the menu options.
Your alternate strategy would be to have two slides that look almost the same.  The first one has the audio, and the second one doesn't.  Your TOC item for Menu, and any other links in the project that point to the Menu, would go to the second slide without audio.  The user will be none the wiser as long as you work out the navigation.

  • How do I add Core Audio files from my HD to the search tab?

iTunes/iPod does not provide a way of copying tracks from an iPod to iTunes except for purchased music. But iTunes can play MP3 files without conversion.
Here are some ways of getting files from an iPod to your PC:
    Copy from iPod to PC
It is important not to allow your iPod to sync with an empty library. If it is set to synchronise automatically you will get a message saying your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to sync – it is important to press cancel as syncing with an empty library erases all music from your iPod.
You can also prevent auto sync by holding down shift & ctrl as you plug in your iPod and keeping the keys held down until the iPod appears in iTunes.
Once you are connected, you need to set your iPod to manage music manually.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1535
If you have an iPod with iTunes Store purchases on it, you can use it to copy your purchases to other authorized computers.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848
However this is not allowed for other music.
This MacMuse tip tells you how to copy music from your iPod using Windows Explorer, but it is a bit fiddly:
    http://discussions.apple.com/messageview.jspa?messageID=797432
Otherwise you can use third party software to manage the transfer, there are a variety of programs out there, some free and some that will copy ratings and counts as well as the music files. Here is a selection, check them out and see what suits you.

  • Help with adding audio files to page

I am using DW CS5.  I have had numerous troubles adding audio files to any page.  Please know that I am not at all computer savy when it comes to html codes etc.  But I have been working with DW CS5 and have a functional website and my pages validate.  That being said, please be patient with me if I am asking stupid questions or don't understand the solution.
Now to the problem....I originally wanted to add mp3 files...but I am not sure how to work with plugins or which plugin to use.
Therefore, I converted my mp3 files to swf and used the insert media file feature in DW CS5.  But when I look at the finished page...I only see a big white box.  Nothing happens when you click on it.
First question...which is the best method to add audio files?
Second question...what steps do I need to follow achieve the desired result?
Note:  there is one validation error on this page and I'm not sure why or how to fix it.  Any suggestions here would be greatly appreciated.

<p class="standardparagraph2">When preserving family history, nothing can compare to sitting down with a Grandparent or Great Aunt or Uncle over a cup of tea; listening to them reminicse about the past.  Unlike handwritten accounts, there is opportunity to ask questions or delve further into the subject.  Even better, recording such conversations so they can be shared for generations to come.<br />
    <br />
The following audio files were created by Virginia (Stasik) Zarow at the request of Laura (Stasik) Schmidt and Carrie (Stasik) Kot.  There were a total of five cassette tapes, ranging from 1 hour to a 1 1/2 halfs in length.  Scott Freeson converted each tape to digital format and then they were broken down into various segments for a total of 7 audio files.  It is recommended that you listen to each tape in the order presented to maintain the proper timeline and context.<br /><br /></p>
<p class="standardparagraph">The first five audio files were recorded by Aunt Virginia in response to questions posed by Laura (Stasik) Schmidt and her sister Carrie (Stasik) Kot.  Aunt Virginia re-recorded her responses in August 2009 after noticing some mistakes in the original recording.<br />

Note:  Virginia refers to her father as "tata", which is the Polish word for dad.</p>

Woohoo! I was able to resolve the issue including the validation issue.  But I have a follow up question...
Currently if you click on the play button another window pops up which has the play/control/stop buttons to control the audio file.  The attribute is set to new window.  If I change the attribute to parent window, then the page that has the control buttons overlays ontop of the page with the link.
To get back to the original page, one must click on the back arrow near the address bar.
Isn't there a way to not have a separate window appear?  In other words, the controls are embeded into the parent page?
