Audio files are bad, no they're good, no they're bad, no they're ....

I downloaded some classical music (yes I paid for it) in the form of an mp3 file (Rachmaninoff: 24 Variations on a Theme of Paganini) - I am giving a lecture on this music and wanted to segment it into the theme and the 24 variations, 25 sections in all. I imported it into FCP5, opened it (the soundtrack) in the viewer, then placed the 25 markers along its length. Then I set in and out points at each marker and created 25 new clips. I then pulled each of these sub-clips, one at a time, into the Timeline, rendered each, and exported each to a new folder. I then opened iTunes, created a new playlist, and copied the clips into the new playlist, then burned them onto a CD. The result was not very good - it sounded as if I had "dropped frames" (is that the same in audio, dropped frames?) - there were discerible breaks in the music as I listened on the CD, not acceptable for even casual listening, much less lecturing. The original file sounds quite good, nothing wrong with it. The breaks in the continuity of the music in the CD clips occur sporadically along the course of the music on each.
Since I also have Soundtrack Pro, I went back to the original file, opened it into Soundtrack Pro, cut the music into the same clips there, and sent the saved clips to a new folder. When burned to a CD they are perfect, not a defect to be heard.
I do notice that the exported files from Soundtrack Pro are wave files (I selected that formet), and the exported files from FCP5 are apparently movie files (the "Get Info" screen identifies them as movie files, DV/DVCPRO NTSC Integer (Big Endian), Timecode 720 X 480.
Since the "movie files" did manage to make it onto the CD and play at all, they obviously work, but not very well. So I have some questions:
1) if I had incorporated these audio clips into a real movie as the soundtrack, and exported the final film onto a DVD would I have had the same problem?
2) if I had exported these audio only movie files onto a DVD disk instead of a CD would that have made a difference?
3) what's so "right" about WAVE files?
4) could I have exported the individual clips in some other audio format (.wav?) other than the native movie file - I should emphasize that I did choose "soundtrack" under the "Export file" command in FCP5! I didn't see any other choices.
I'd really like to understand what is happening, I have a lot of editing to do in the near future and audio was always my nemesis (video is so simple by comparison) when I used and XP system.

Thanks. I am new at this. Your kind answer prompts another few questions:
1) when I buy music from iTunes, they arrive in .mp4 format (my Rachmaninoff was purchased from eMusic and they use .mp3). I notice that neither FCP5 nor Soundtrack Pro (by the way, Soundtrack Pro is bundled with FCP5 when purchased) seems able to read ("open" and "import" won't work) the .mp4 format. And neither will convert the format, I get an error message that it's been encoded with a protective code and cannot be edited. However, I am able to burn the .mp4 file to a CD, then import the file from the CD back into the hard drive, and import it into Soundtrack Pro or FCP5. What kind of "protection" is that, and why am I being restricted and forced to use this labyrinth technique to be able to edit my sound file that I bought, paid for, and own?
2) I also note that in Soundtrack Pro I have a choice of several formats to export to - both AIFF and WAVE seem to be compatible with FCP5 - the manuals that came with FCP5 define the different file formats, but don't really suggest one or the other as superior. I notice that some file formats have special uses, like crossing over to another audio system, that doesn't apply to me as I am only using FCP5 and iTunes. So is there a real difference between AIFF and WAVE that should make me favor one over the other? I get the feeling (from the manual) that AIFF is preferred, I just want to understand why (if that's true).
3) still curious about my other question in the original questions: would the FCP5 generated "movie files" (that have only audio, no video) have worked OK if I had burned them to a DVD disk instead of a CD?
Again, thanks in advance.

  • Audio files are missing in iMovie HD 6

I have 10.5 installed and was using iMovie 08. I was having problems exporting a movie, some of the clips were all black. So I downloaded iMovie 06 and all the iLife audio files are missing.
They're still there in '08 but not '06. How do I get them in? Is there a way to import them?

I have never used Screenium nor do I know anything about it, but iMovie 6 prefers footage in .dv format. You may have more success if you use Streamclip to convert the .mov to .dv before importing it into iMovie 6

  • Imported audio files are repeating same audio on objects in a slide

    Hi
I can't find anything here that mentions the problem I am having.
I am using Captivate 4. And Neospeechs desktop VoiceText program to record audio files outside of Captivate. They are saved as WAV files, then I import the audio into Captivate.
I have various objects on a slide. For example, I have six text Rollover Captions. When you roll over them, some text is displayed. I have attached my audio files to these rollover objects. So, I would have audio1.wav, audio2.wav, audio3.wav etc and these play when you roll over the captions.
The issue I am having, is that when I Publish or Preview the project, sometimes the wrong audio file is playing upon rollover. Usually the first couple of caption/file combinations will work, so I get audio1.wav for caption1 and audio2.wav for caption2, but then say for captions 3,4,5,6 I am still getting audio1.wav playing!
I have doubled checked everything and the correct audio files are attached to the captions. And they all play correctly in Edit view.
I've just noticed this has happened again in a different Captivate 4 project, where I have about 6 lines of Text Animation, with an audio file for each text animation. They have been distributed across the timeline so that the text animations do not overlap, and yet I am still hearing imported audio files repeated.
If anyone can help to shed any light on this, i'd be grateful, as I'm totally stumped!
    thanks
    Lolly

  • Issue where audio files are causing buffering in Adobe Presenter 9.0.2

I have a module that I have published that the audio files are causing the playback to buffer at the end of the slides. I have unchecked Disable preloading of embedded Flash content, since I have seen that suggestion previously causing issues. I do not have videos in this module. It did this when I did a preview of my PowerPoint presentation. Thinking publishing could give me a possible different outcome once it was on the Connect server. However, the same issue occurs. I have tried copying the slides and placing them into a new presentation but that did not work as well, I had the same issue. Any suggestions on how to fix this? I am at a holding point since I cannot make the course live if I know this is an issue on playback.

    Hi kornieme,
Please package the published content using package option in presenter and put it in some drop box and send me the link..

  • Recorded audio files are gone after power outage during a concert

    Hello together,
yesterday I used Logic Pro X to record a concert at our school. I had connected my MacBook Air to our mixer via FireWire, and everything went fine until two minutes before the concert's ending, the power went out. My MacBook was still working from battery, however, Logic Pro stopped recording and all recorded files except for one audio file are gone. I have already tried to recover the lost data by using a data recovery app, but it didn't find anything.
Is there a way to recover the lost recordings? I mean, Logic must have written its audio files to the hard drive somewhere and even when everything crashed, I don't think the files got overwritten with zeros or something else that could have destroyed it...
    Many Regards,
    Leo Bernard

I have Prem. Elements 12.  I am trying to add audio media.  I know where the audio files are located (using GET INFO while in iTunes), and when I try to add certain audio files, some are accepted and some are not.  In one case, when I opened a particular folder, the song was not listed, even tho' the song is there when using Windows Explorer.  This happens with mp3 and mp4 and just wav files.  Some audio are accepted, most are not.  I get that codec is not installed error message, too.

  • Audio files are there, but there is no sound.  Final Cut v1.0.1

I have been working on a project in Final cut express v1.0.1 for a few days. At first, there were no problems with audio, then I tried to open the file on a friends machine using final cut 2 (my final cut program and scratch disc are on an external drive). I was prompted to update my project so it would be FC2 compatible and I chose not to. We were not able to view the project on my friend's machine. When I try to play the project now, there is no sound even though all audio files are in place.
It might be worthwhile to note that before trying to view the project on my friend's machine I created a "final cut movie file" which will play with audio on either machine in Quicktime but not in Final cut.
Any help or advice about what I should do to fix this would be much apreciated, Thanks.

  • Logic Pro 9- I saved a song- the audio files did not bounce and are nowhere to be found.  The song is still there, but the audio files are missing.  Any ideas?

I have searched the computer by song name in the audio files.
I have opened up media files and looked everywhere.
I tried remapping where they would be saved and hoping they were updated.
Any help finding where they are located would be great.  The song still loads when I open it, I just can't find the audio files!

Have you tried using the built in Browser in LP?

  • Trying to combine folders within LR4 from two separate drives without creating duplicates--sometimes it won't let me transfer to destination folder because it says files are there when they are not; other times, allows duplicates to transfer

Trying to consolidate 261K+ of images within LR4 between two drives.  Someone who was "helping" me with my Library in LR4 for some reason took some but not all of the file folders from my main backup drive (M) and duplicated them onto a partitioned hard drive (E) directly on the computer.  The duplication is huge, so I am trying to condense them all back onto the original backup drive M, particularly since I believe there are also folders on the partitioned backup drive E that do not appear on the main one M, and there are many more file folders on M that are not on E, so that is the destination drive.
CONSOLIDATION:  When I try to drag either the file folders or the individual files from the duplicate drive E to the original drive M to combine the two drives since the folders in many cases for some reason are not identical, sometimes LR4 says the files already exist when they clearly don't. Other times it allows me to drag and drop all files, even if the exact duplicates are already on the destination drive, thereby doubling the number of files per image and creating more duplicates.  Right now I am opening each file folder on the duplicate drive E, looking at what extensions and file names are there, scrolling to the original drive, making sure they appear to be identical, then going back to the duplicate drive E, deleting the images in the folder, removing the folder, and moving to the next folder on the duplicate drive E.  *There has got to be a simpler way.*
CONSOLIDATION APPROACH: I did start to create file folders names A, B, C and group file folders under them to reduce clutter, since those header folders can be closed down when not in use, but now I am wondering if I should have done that alphabetization to the main backup drive rather than to the partitioned backup drive.
My goal is to consolidate the two drives down to one, delete as many images along the way that I know I will never miss, then backup the catalog and export it to an external drive and then copy that to yet another drive for offside storage.  Does this sound like the proper plan?  Last time it took almost 24 hours and over a terabyte to export the catalog.
DUPLICATION:  I also have many file folders that have the exact same image in them.  One portfolio image may actually be in eight different folders, with the exact file, file name, file size, and date, even though I always have checked "no duplicates on import,"  How can this be? What is the best way to sort through duplicates?  Why are the files in some of the duplicate folders not in numerical order? If I do a search and call up a file # and find 15 duplicates, the only way I can find where those duplicates reside is to take each duplicate, right click to Locate Folder in Library, then once I find it, I have to go back to All Photographs>Text.search for file #, go to the second duplicate, right click to Locate Folder in Library, then once I find it, I have to do it all again.  Is there a simpler way to see all the occurrences in their respective folder locations at once?
SEARCH BY FILE FOLDER NAME ONLY: I also find I can't search for a file using a folder name (for example, "John_Doe").  I can only search by file #, keywords, or camera/lens/date, etc.  Why will it not work to use All Photographs>Text>search for Doe? In other words, if I didn't keyword the individual files as John Doe, I can't search for them by that moniker.
BACKUP:  It also appears that the only way I can back up the catalog is to shut down LR.  Really?!
FOLDER LIST PRINTOUT: Is there a way to print out the Folder list (other than a screen shot)? I have so many file folders on each drive since I sort not by Year/Month/Date but by subject. It makes trying to compare duplicate folders quite unwieldy.
SLOW RESPONSE:  And finally, as though that weren't enough, why does LR4 continually blink to a white screen after each keystroke?  Takes forever just to be able to click through images, view info after hovering, etc. All other programs are closed down and the operating system shows very little memory being used.

A brief and probably non-helpful answer: I know of no way to eliminate your large amount of duplicates other than by repetitive, tedious manual effort.
*There has got to be a simpler way.*
I hope you're right, but I don't think there is a simpler way.
BACKUP:  It also appears that the only way I can back up the catalog is to shut down LR.  Really?!
    Yes, really

  • How to tell if multiple files are selected when they are opened in windows

Hello, can someone help me, my question is how to tell if multiple file selections were made when they were opened (right-click->open). Through modifying the registry I already have my Java program start up when a file with specific extension is double-clicked.
The problem is when multiple files are opened at the same time, an instance of java program is created and run for each of the selected files. Ideally I would like it so that only one instance of java program is run, regardless of the number of selections.
When you try it with Microsoft media player or winamp for example, it seems that only one process is created and run (I don't see many processes spawning when I watch it using task manager). Maybe this is more of Windows issue rather than Java programming issue. Any help is appreciated.

If anybody wants to know, this can be solved by either 1) using DDE 2) using DropTarget (from Windows) 3) make a light-weight EXE dispatcher (eg. in C), and use file to have IPC between the dispatcher (which gets the filepath for each of the selections) and the java program. There can be other methods of course. Using the second option is the simplest but it requires WinXP and higher. I implemented it using option 3.. the downside of this is there's a warning message pop up when trying to open many (>20?) files at the same time by Windows. However, option 1 'seems' to have the same limitation. Having a java program created each time for each of the selections seems to be too slow, for viable option.

  • Garage Band Claims Audio Files Are In 8-Bit Format And Unusable.

I've used garageband to make my podcasts for about a year now, with no problems.
Sometime in March, though, there were two changes to my setup and I started noticing big problems.
The first change was the upgrade to 6.0.5 of garageband, which happened in early march. The second was that my harddrive was full, so i started saving my garageband files to an external hard drive.
The issue I'm experiencing is that when I load up a saved GB files (from the External HD), it will give weird errors, like, "The File Type Is Not Supported," and "One Or Multiple Audio Files Changed In Length," and "Garageband found 1 audio file in 8-bit format - the file is unsupported and cannot be played back."
When the error messages stop appearing, large segments of my podcast are missing, or the segments will be blank with no audio.
Generally, if I get my entire podcast done in one go without saving/reloading it, this is not a problem.
I've lost hours of work with this bug.
    Can anyone suggest a solution?
    Thanks.

  • My audio files are mixed in STEREO but when exported they come out MONO ?

I'm working on a music video project and have been sent AIF files that are in stereo.
However, when they are imported into FCP, they seem to be coming out to mono. I don't do anyhing to the file other than import and synch up to the video.
I'm not as well versed in the audio world, am I not doing something to the file or in the import process that is making it play in mono instead of stereo?
    Thanks!

it might be just your sequence settings need changing
select your sequenec and press Command-0 (zero)
then switch to the Audio Outputs tab
if the Grouping is set to Dual Mono, then you can change it to Stereo and click Ok
