Audio filter question

I am trying to render some footage that was shot during a live comedian event from around 15 meters away using a stationary camera.
The picture quality is ok, but the sound is lacking a bit. The big room create some echoing by default, and the microphone was far away - so some of the closer background noise is just too loud in comparison.
So i am looking for a filter that helps me remedy this. As re-rendering is time consuming just to test for some subtle audio changes, and there are soo many filters available (FCE HD 3.5) - which one should i look closer into?
Thanks a lot for pointers.
Frank Mantek

There is not much you can do with bad sound. You can spend ages and end up with very little, if any, improvement.
Some people recommend a program called SoundSoap but that costs big money! ( £100 upwards - with no guarantee it will help your problem ).

  • Audio Filter that make your files sound better

I have recorded all of my audio files with a shotgun mic and they sound pretty good I just wanted to see if there was any icing on the cake filter that you can think of to give it more of a rich sound.

There is nothing wrong with learning and we all have this fact in common; once we were all newbies and had to learn. I wish I would have had these resources when I was a kid but all I had was a Kodak Instamatic and and super8 movie camera. Pretty lucky then!
But, looking at your body of posts, you expect people in a virtual space to know what you're doing, what your video looks like and how it sounds. We don't even know how your rig is configured or what you're using for equipment so how is anyone supposed to answer such ambiguous questions on subjects of rank subjectivity for you?
There is huge merit is figuring stuff out for yourself as this way leads to better learning than having someone just point out the way. Everyone needs help occasionally -- or frequently in my case -- so when you do, come and ask with specifics in mind. Join Lynda.com for a month, it's cheap at $25.00 and then bookmark and devour everything in kenstone.net, provideocoaltion, adam wilt's website and I'll guarantee you'll learn more than running in here and asking constant generalities. It's my biggest problem with this forum and others; everyone thinks there's a magic filter/plugin, no one wants to figure out anything for themselves and because FCP and Macs are cheap, all this should be easy. Well, whatever.
So, A., learn up cause I don't understand audio to save my life and when I need help with audio compressor settings, after I've read the manual and Jon Chappell's great audio filter articles and experimented on my own and researched the forums, I'm asking you for help.

  • Audio Filter missing:  Internal Volume Stereo - corrupt project?

    Hi,
I am getting this error when I open my project. In addition, no media will play in the project either in the sequence window or the source window.
It all appears and will scrub (with no audio), but will not play.
I dug around a bit and I found that there is a known bug with audio from XML's and that is what I am using (convinced my client to migrate from FCP to Premiere - please don't tell me I made a mistake).
Everything worked brilliantly for a week, including the addition of audio filters, and then all of a sudden - bang. No more.
I have painstakingly deleted every audio filter and I am still getting this error. I have also tried a re-install.
Another oddity is that when I try to quit Premiere, it will not quit all the way without a force quit!
I'm running CC 2014 on a brand new mac pro.
    Desperate,
    dw

    Steve and Bill,
I follow your advice, but it did not solve the problem. It is true  that  problems began when I used ZOOM recorder at 98kHz/24 bit in my current project (I already changed ZOOM mode to 48kHz/16 bit), but could this be just a coincidence?
In the meantime I checked the rest of my 16 projects (.prel), which were fine before. To my surprise I found that although all of them were made using EXACTLY the same method, some of them are still OK, but most I can not Playback. The messages appearing are of three types:
    1. "Audio Filter missing: Internal Balance".
    2. "Audio Filter missing: Internal Volume Stereo".
    3. "This type of file is not supported or required codec is not installed".
In one case, when I opened a project the first time, the message was "This type of file is not supported or required codec is not installed", but when I opened it second time it said " Audio Filter missing:Internal Volume Stereo". It seems to be random.
Some projects can be opened, but when I try to Playback  there is no sound.
I am completly lost. Please help.

  • What kind of audio filter would i use.

i need an audio filter that will bring out a distant clapping noise thats you cant even hear during playback. i have raised the dB as high as possible. is there a way to get it heard at all?

Just be aware, that if the audio is very slight and you raise the level .. you will also raise the levels of any surrounding room noise, etc ... so you will get a lot of hiss and maybe even echo. You can also double up the clip to increase the volume but I doubt you would be left with anything useful
Been there, done that, cursed the cameraman

  • Premiere Audio Filter Issues

So I've finished my project, applied audio filters (Denoiser) to get rid of the hissing sound. Worked flawlessly. Sounds great in my project, but once exported the hissing returns at the begining of each new audio clip. The sound gets perfect again after a second or two but reverts to the pre-filter sound each time a new clip comes in.
So is there a fade in-out for the audio filter? I can't find one (and why would one want one). Doesn't matter how I export, to any file type, always the same, brief original audio which gently fades back to the perfect-filtered audio.
Again, sounds perfect all the way through in my project, but not after rendering. Any ideas?

This is a known issue with certain audio filters in PP.  The recommended solution is to process those audio files in Audition instead.
And do file a bug report.

  • What's the best audio filter and settings to eliminate echo?

I shot an interview in a hallway. What's the best audio filter and settings to reduce/eliminate echo?

There isn't one. You will be trying to remove the same frequencies as those you want to keep.
Reshoot it, strategically position some heavy drapes and use close miking such as a lav and reliable monitoring quality headphones.

  • Audio Filter missing . . .

I have experienced a number of crashes (iMac OS 10.75) in my Premiere Pro project + the warning "Audio Filter missing: Internal Volume Mono"  How do I resolve this?  It seems to be a 'project' problem.
    Thanks for your help.

I wish I could supply some help; I am having the same problem (newest version of Premiere Pro CC, just reinstalled in hopes of solving this problem, on a Macbook Pro i7 running 10.8.4 with 16GB RAM. It is rendering my project unusable. Help anyone?

  • Audio Filter missing:  Internal Volume Mono

All of a sudden this error message started popping up
Audio Filter missing:  4:1635083896 1278365011 1802721110  Audio Filter missing:  Internal Volume Mono
Also now my timeline is not working, some tracks are missing volume envelopes and when I scroll up and down it's all messed up and I can't do anything.
    What's happening?
I tried re-installing the latest update CC 2014.1 but no go...
    Help!!

OH man, Im also having loads of other audio issues with this update. Clicks, pops, audio often mutes on it's own. No audio comes through and there's screeching huge noise...ng
Really disappointed with this! Im paying good money for the CC and today alone Ive spent 4 hours trying to figure out these massive issues.
Im using multiband compressor and EQ and the instant I add those to the timeline the troubles begin.

  • *** Audio filter to boost low volume?

I have a clip that was recorded at too low of a volume. I would like to now augment this in post. Is there an audio filter that I could apply in FCP that would increase the speaking parts and at the same time reduce the hiss?
    Thanks in advance!

The Dynamic Processor filter can increase volume, but sometimes it's quicker and easier to just duplicate the track [Shift Option drag]. For reducing the hiss I'd recommend the noise reduction process in SoundTrack Pro or applying an EQ filter and reduce the frequencies of the hiss.

  • Audio Filter NORMALIZE AUDIO

I have edited on all sorts of NE systems, and have found the Normalize audio filter in all. Does FCP have this feature, or is there any way to normalize (keep all audio levels within the same range.?)
    Please let me Know!!!!
    Thanks

I believe that is in Soundtrack but not infront of my system at the moment.

  • Audio filter: flat

    Hi:
Is there a good audio filter in FCP that can help reduce the echo effect of a
church? It's hard to understand the speaker because of the magnificent echo
created by the sanctuary. I'd just like to be able to reduce that a bit.
    Any thoughts?
    Schuney

Hi, this is an age old problem that I'm afraid your stuck with. Many people believe that audio problems are solvable in post production but if you have recorded it then your stuck with it. Usually only buzzes and hums are removable and not always successfully.
I suggest you try experimenting with filters and see if you can improve the sound quality. EQ maybe, but even try a harsh compressor, you never know. There are some noise filters that sample the background noise and then remove it but they tend to make the person sound like they have a speech impediment.
The only real way to solve the problem would have been to get the mic very close to the speaker but in an echoey church even that may not be the answer.
Sorry there is no straight forward answer to your problem.

  • Audio Filter to  Eliminate  hiss ?

Is there any Audio Filter that will help eliminate hiss I picked up from very load air-conditioning units , during an interview ??
    G4 Dual 1gig   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

Go over to proapptips.com and look for Dave Slater's way to tune out unwanted frequencies. It's pretty cool, right inside FCP.
Another, probably the best, filter is a good audio engineer on the set.

  • Audio filter(s)/adjustments to deepen voice...?

What audio filter(s) - and what adjustments- would be recommended to deepen someone's voice? Can't seem to find here or in Soundtrack discussions...
    Thanks!

Well... microphone technique is the first place to start, but if a person sounds like Shirley Temple, it's pretty hard to get Orson Welles out of it.
you might try a harmonizer, which drops pitch without changing speed.
