Audio formats for broadcast from DVD

Hi--
I have a 2 minute project that will be aired on TV from a DVD. I am trying to choose the best format in Compressor to export for DVD. Seeing as it's such a short piece, I have plenty of room. My project is cut on FCP 5.1.2 and is a 720x480 NTSC - CCIR/DV project with footage mostly from DVD and audio from a stereo CD and other stereo and mono sources.
On the video side, I have noticed no quality difference between exporting an uncompressed 10-bit file and an mpeg-2 6.2Mbps 2-pass 4:3 file. They look the same to me on DVD on my TV.
On the audio side, I am not sure whether to use Dolby or AIFF, then within those options whether to use AIFF 96/24 (that's PCM, right?) or 48/24 or Dolby (Auto) or 2.0. I just don't know enough about audio.
I use Toast Titanium to burn my DVDs, and it too has a variety of custom output options. It allows me to have an average and maximum bit rate up to 9.0 Mbps and allows me either PCM 96/24 or Dolby Digital up to 448 kbps.
My research has only granted me piecemeal info, as most people are concerned with file size and have to make choices with that in mind. I know people are reluctant to give strict guidelines on this site and that some of this is subjective, but can someone tell me what would technically give me the best (meaning most) video resolution and audio clarity?
Thanks,
Mike
Mac Pro Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Is PCM the same as 96 khz/24 bit AIFF, or are there ranges of PCM?
If my original sequence audio is set at 48 khz/16 bit, is there any advantage to PCM or is it just an exercise in futility?
PCM and AIFF are basically the same thing: uncompressed audio. Look this links just as information:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AIFF
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCM#EncodingforTransmission
You can have uncompressed audio 48kHz/16bit and 96kHz/24 bit. DVD standard accept PCM (AIFF) 48kHz/16bit. Then your original audio format from your sequence is fine to use for DVD authoring.
What is the difference difference between MPEG-2 with a high Mbps and Uncompressed 10-bit? What should I really be using for a DVD?
If your FCP project/timeline is DV NTDC, no use to export as Uncompressed 10-bit. You cannot get a better quality than your footage, and this is encoded as DV.
MPEG-2 is the oded video used in SD DVDs. No matter what video source you use to build your disc in Toast, finally you'll disc will have a MPEG2 video inside.
Then from FCP sequence use Export > Quicktime Movie > Selfcontained leaving currect settings. You'll get an independent file with same quality that your timeline that you can use for your build in Toast or encoding in Compressor.
Hope it helps!

  • Transport KM rooms as entry point for broadcasting from Portal 7.01 to Portal 7.4 possible?

    Hallo together,
is it possible to transport entry points (for broadcasting) from one portal to another?
For our upgrade BW 7.01 to BW 7.4 we want to transport the KM Content (including the rooms).
Transporting the rooms and room structures is no problem, but the transported rooms are not visible in ENTRY POINTS -> My Room Folders.
Only rooms that are newly created in the 7.4 Portal are visible in that folder.
Is there are way to make the transported rooms also visible there?
    Thanks and best regards!

    Hi Ramakrishna!
I know that WP-PI 6.00 will work fine with R/3 4.6C but my doubt is if I can use WP-PI 6.00 (which is
    EP 6.00 plug-in) to connect the R/3 4.6c with an EP 7.00.
I didn´t find anything like WP-PI 7.00 in SAP Marketplace. I´ve already read the note you pointed out but it refers to EP 6.00. It also says you can use WP-PI 6.00 por EP 5.0 or Sap Workplace. But can I also use it with EP 7.00?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Export MXF with multiple audio channels for broadcast

    Hi,
I work at a broadcast company as an editor. We always used FCP with the free sony xdcam plugin to export. This plugin seems to be one of the rare ways to export an MXF with 4 audio channels. I don't know exactly why we need to export it for broadcasting with 4 audio channels, but we do.
Since our workload has grown enormously the last few months and it will only become more we are optimizing our workflow. We also work with a lot of different endboards in After Effects and we made a nice template to work with. And since AE and Premiere can make a dynamic link we are considering changing from FCP to Premiere.
Now comes the question!: The only obstacle we could not find an answer to is exporting it with 4 audio channels as an MXF from Premiere CS5. Will there be some development on this level regarding CS6?
A solution to this should save us a lot of time!
Any help will be highly appreciated!
I also attached an example for the usual MXF files we export

I have the same problem. I have a project with multiple audio channels and I want to export them as individual channels in a MXF-file.
    Method:
When I created a new sequence I choose "Multichannel" from the "Tracks" page. When I export the MXF OP1a, I choose 8 channels from the "Audio" page. None of the channels are muted.
    Result:
The rendered file contains 8 channels, but only the first two channels contains any audio (main left + right), the rest of the channels are empty. Channel 1 and 2 contains the audio from all channels, but I want the channels to be seperated in the same way as they are layered in Premiere.
I don't understand your answer to wleoni75's question. Could you please help me further?

  • What's the best export format for television from FCE?

    Hi,
I'm working in HD in FCE and need to export a short (40-sec) clip for the local cable station. To get the highest quality, I exported as a QuickTime Movie (self-contained), and burned a CD copy of the file and hand delivered it to them. Unfortunately, they couldn't open it (they said there were codec problems). So, I need to do it differently. I've been experimenting, and thus far it seems best if I do this:
    Export to QuickTime Conversion
Settings: QuickTime Movie, compress with MPEG-4 Video, keyframe rate = 24, bitrate = 5000 kbps, dimensions 1280x720.
The result is "okay", but that's all. Anyone have any suggestions as to how I can get a television-quality clip out of FCE (using QuickTime Conversion)?
    Thanks!
    Vic

    I should've been a little more detailed...
The cable station broadcasts ads for real estate agents. Hence, they use mostly still images. Lately, they are getting a little more into full-motion video. The two guys that run that division are not exactly video savvy. For that matter, neither am I. I do videos for the web (real estate videos). I want to promote my service to other agents, so would like to show some short sample clips on TV to attract attention and draw new business. Previously, I e-mailed Flash video to the cable station and it worked fairly well; but, as you can imagine it was far from television quality (it was jittery and pixelated). They tell me that they use MPEG-2 format to broadcast their video clips. FCE won't allow me to export that format. They tell me that, if I bring them some other format, they can convert. As I mentioned, I burned QuickTime format clips (about a half gig each) to a CD and brought those to them. They were unable to open the files. Now, I'm lost. I'm wondering if there's a format I can output from FCE that will be of high enough quality. The guys at the cable station suggested .avi, but isn't that a web format?
Any output formats/parameters you can think of that might work for me?
    Thanks very much!
    Vic

  • Video and audio formats for iPad

Hey, guys.. I've tried searching this up in the forum but didn't have any luck with that..
I can't seem to upload my movies and songs into iPad... I tried converting my movie into .mov and .mp4. They can both be imported into my iTunes library but when I drag it to the iPad tab it says it cannot be copied because it cannot be played on the iPad. And some of my albums just can't be imported.
May I know the preferred format for my movies and my songs? And what could be the problem with my importing..
    Thanks heaps.

Here are the spec for video and audio for the iPad:
H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

  • Best audio format for recording speech?

    Hello everybody,
I was wondering which audio format (encoding, sample rate, sample size) is considered best for recording speech in regard of memory usage and perceptible/acceptable quality loss.
What do you suggest, what are your experiences, what reasons can you state?
    Thanks!

    I finally found something:
    [sample rate for speech|http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php?title=Sample_Rates#32_kHz_.2F_14.5_kHz]
    [bit depth|http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Bit_Depth#16_Bit]
I know audacity is not an application based on the java sound api but these wiki articles provide good common information on signal processing.
According to the article I believe 32kHz ist the optimal sample rate for recording speech. But I still don't feel satisfied by the information given about the bit depth. I think 8 bit is too low but 16 bit (CD quality) might be too sumptuous. Unfortunately the quality I can record with is limited my recording and output hardware so it might become hard for me to top that out. Maybe someone can help.
Is it true, that the encoding can be customized with codecs by extending the audio service provider? How would something like that work?

  • HT5176 Audio format for dictation?

What is the audio format used to capture dictation on the new iPad that is sent to Apple servers for transcription?

    Hi Meg,
I don't have an iPad, but I am writing about the feature. If I had one, I wouldn't need to post this item. I would just sniff the network and review the transmission sent to Apple.
I am writing about the feature in a story and I am assuming the audio content has to be captured in some file format to be delivered over the web.

  • Best audio format to get from voiceover talent?

Someone is doing a voiceover for me and she said she can send the file to me in whatever format I need it in. Would anyone know what the best one would be (best quality and easiest to work) within FCE? I'm on a Mac, btw.
    Thanks.

I work as an audio engineer and do lots of VO work. You always want to have the highest quality recording you can have within reason for your project.
When recording I'd recommend 16 bit, 48k (.aif or .wav will work, I prefer .aif). But remember when receiving audio from an outside house request to them that everything is recorded in 16/48k as they could record in 44.1 and upsample to 48k for your delivery and then you've lost that quality difference in sample rate.
Amatures tend to record everything in 16bit 44.1k because it is the audio CD standard, but many do know realize that Mini DV and HD standards record in 16bit 48k.

  • What is the best format for broadcast quality

I am a web developer, but some of the things i did in flash my company wants to use for a tv commercial. They are not taking no for an answer (I tried). I have limited experience with video editing, but i have some.
My question is what size (dimentions) + format do I output a finished product in for the tv station? I know some formats don't have a size (dimentions). For example a wmv doesnt realy have a pixel size like 640 x 480.
I would be exporting a .mov from flash. Then editing it accordingly in Final Cut. So i would need to know what size to make my flash piece, because in flash you need to set dimentions in pixels by height and width.
If anyone could help me out by pointing me in the right direction i would really appreciate it.

Jumping into HD, when you don't even know the basics of SD, is not recommended. SD is simple: 720x486 (sometimes 720x480) and 29.97fps. That's it. Simple. Digitbeta, betasp, DVCPRO 50...maybe DV (if cable access)
HD is not simple. 1080i? 720p? 1080p? 23.98fps? 29.97fps? 59.94fps? HDCAM? HDCAM SR? D5? DVCPRO HD? Not to be entered into lightly.
No offense, but they need somone experienced with broadcast standards to make this output. You can provide the file, but someone needs to take it from there. I know that I would be the LAST person to go to for encoding a flash video for the web.

  • What's the best video/audio format for PPCS4?

Question looks like a simple and stupid one, but I've noticed many differences using various kind of file extensions.
For example when you have to put an effect.
Mercalli is very performing if the effect is applied to an .avi file instead of a native .mpeg file taken from my Sony HDR-SR videocam.
    So the question is:
If I have to change the video file format, what is the best one (or one of the best) I can use?
Avi, we know, is an uncompressed (and eavy) one, but, if you have 700/800 file to edit, maybe PP could go slowly. Am I wrong?
Of course I have tried using the same video strip differently converted.
    Wait helps.
    Many thanks,
    Ciao
    Giorgio

    Re-thanks Harm,
I know about .ac3 audio problems, I've posted a discussion time ago concerning this trouble.
But now I'm mainly looking for a video format.
    Example:
clips in native video compression are 'round 25Mb each
converted in .avi file can reach 630 Mb
Honestly I'll fill my entire pc with a format like this.
What I'm asking is a suggested kind of file that can easily work with PP and if you know a sw that do it.
I have Tmpge but I do not know  how to set it for the best results (unless I just set AVI output with the problem mentioned above).
I've read on the forum that DV AVI could be a good chance but which good sw can give me this files?
    Ciao

  • Unsupported Image Format for DNG from GF1?

I am in the process of trying to switch from Lightroom 3 to Aperture 3 (in case you are wondering why the main reason is increasing integration between iOS and Aperture).
Most of the images in my Lightroom catalog are from Nikon DSLRs which when I import as DNGs from Lightroom into Aperture show up just fine. However, all of the old DNGs I try to import from Lightroom as DNGs that were shot with my Panasonic GF1 don't render in Aperture and just show up as "Unsupported Image Format."
Please note that new GF1 images I import from the SD card of my GF1 import just fine. The problem seems limited to GF1 images saved in Lightroom as DNGs that I am importing into Aperture.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to correct this issue?
    Thank you.

Solved it. Had nothing to do with Photoshop PS4 install, it had to do with moving my home space to a larger external drive. One of the "import" setting changed (I don't remember changing it) such that the images weren't getting imported into Aperture. (Re-?)checked that, and all is well. Will go for the PS4-reinstall tomorrow.

  • File Format for export from Ciscoworks to ACS

    Hi,
I want to export devices from Ciscoworks lms 3.2 to ACS 4.1 with the cli-tool
    dcrcli expAcs
But, what is the file format I have to use
lsattr gives me just the complete list of all cs-attributes
    thanks, William

If you do not specify the file name,
–In Non-ACS mode all the devices from DCR will be exported to the specified server.
–In ACS mode, only the devices that are not configured in ACS will be exported from DCR to the specified server.
The file format is the same as when you export the devices from DCR.  If you perform an export to a CSV for example, the tool will use that last file unless another file is specified.

  • Options for capturing from DVD

i'm reposting in hope of a quick answer since my original question has changed.  in short, i have some vhs footage that's been converted to dvd (using a simple dvd-recorder) as well as some camcorder footage already on dvd.  now i want to edit the dvd footage in iMovie.  i understand there are several products that will convert the DVD signal into something manageable by iMovie.  i'd like to know which will work best and which is the best value for the money.
    my choices are:
    1) canopus advc 55 or 110 ($170-220)
    2) something like the elgato vcd (converts to mp4?) ($85)
    3) DVDxDV software (converts to quicktime?) ($29)
aside from the advantage for canopus of converting directly from vhs, is there any other reason (e.g. in terms of how the footage is converted) that would justify the price of the canopus now that everything's on dvd?

sounds like there isn't much of an advantage to spring for canopus unless you're starting from a true analog source, like vhs.  mp4 is not the ideal import to iMovie in terms of resolution, so DVDxDV trumps elgato.
conclusion: dvdxdv seems to be one of the best available ways to import DVD into iMovie.  not a bad price, and can be tested using the free version.
