Audio formats on .mov file

Hi all,
I need to generate a video recorded file from an embedded device (network video recorder) that can be imported from Final Cut Pro. The easiest formats for me to generate are .mov with H264 video format and ulaw audio format, but I have been told that this is not supported by Final Cut. Can anybody point me out to a list of supported formats by Final Cut in both .avi and .mov?. Ideally it should be H264 for video and ulaw or alaw stereo audio format.
Thanks

Hi,
you can read Final Cut Pro 7 specs, listed here:
http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/specs/#finalcutpro
AIFF is a format that you can edit directly without the needs to render.
Also check FCP documentation. From its pages you can find this:
Recommended Audio File Formats
For best performance, use one of the following uncompressed audio file formats when
editing in Final Cut Pro:
• AIFF or AIFC containing uncompressed audio
• WAVE or Broadcast Wave Format (BWF) containing uncompressed audio
• Sound Designer II
• Single-track or multitrack QuickTime movies containing uncompressed audio
Natively, Final Cut Pro captures to QuickTime movie files with one or more audio tracks.
Audio Formats to Avoid
The following formats and audio data formats should be avoided when editing in
Final Cut Pro because they require real-time processing for playback:
• Any file containing compressed formats such as MP3, AAC, and Apple Lossless Codec
• QuickTime movies containing compressed audio, such as MPEG-4 and H.264 files
• Multiplexed video and audio streams such as MPEG-2 program streams and DV Stream
files (This is one of the formats iMovie can create during capture.)
Regards,
Armando.

  • What format video/movie files will the iPod 80GB Video play?

    Hi there!
My iPod is working well, but I cannot get it to play movies. Does anyone know what formats the files have to be in for iPod to play it? Will it play .avi's, mpeg4, .vob etc?
Thanks in advance and happy 2007!

The file must meet the following specifications to play correctly.
H.264 video: up to 768 Kbps, 320 x 240, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats
    -or-
MPEG-4 video: up to 2.5 mbps, 480 x 480, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats.

  • Losing audio when editing .mov files...

I have 4 .mov video files that are parts of 1 video. I can't get them into Apple TV, but I wanted to join them together in one video, anyway. I'm not having any luck doing that. (I have the right to have these videos.)
I can bring them into a sequence in FCP 6.0.6, and even export them in a form that I can put on my Apple TV. But I lose the audio, which makes them useless.
Probably worth noting: When I bring these small .mov files into my sequence, I can see them and scrub through them, but I can't play them at all (they all have the red line indicating they need to be rendered first). I have the latest iMac 27" with the i7 processor and two internal drives, so I can't see why they'd have to be rendered first. They are really low-quality, small files (around 3MB each).
Can anyone tell me what the problem might be? Thanks for any advice.

FCP only works natively with formats listed in the Easy Set Up list. It does NOT work natively with many formats that are intended for final delivery like MPG-4, h.264 and others. If you import those types of files into FCP they WILL need to be rendered. But it is better to first convert those files before you import into FCP. That fact that you can't hear the audio may indicate you're using a muxed format that will need to be demuxed for editing.
This information is easily found in the User's Manual. It sounds like this would be a good time to read the basics.

  • Video freezing, audio continues with .mov files

I just tried taking video with a new Kodak M1033HD camera, which it creates .mov files. When I play the .mov video file on the camera is works fine. But when I try playing it on my computer (using Quicktime as well as Windows player (using Vista OS), the video freezes, stutters, stops and starts, but the audio plays right through perfectly. Any ideas what might be wrong and how to fix it?
    Thanks,
    Jay

This sounds similar to what I reported in, "Problem viewing video in QuickTime 7.5.5" http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1864506&tstart=105
Sorry that I don't have a good answer yet.

  • Extract audio from MP4 movie file to iTunes library

I downloaded a 5-minute movie, it's now sitting on my desktop as a mp4 QuickTime file, opens and plays fine. I want to turn the audio soundtrack of the movie (one complete song) into an mp3 in my Music library, so I can just play the song on my iPod without opening the movie file (I have an older iPod 60GB that doesn't play movies). Please advise, thanks

Open the movie in the QuickTime Player and Select Export -> Sound to AIFF.
Drop the exported AIFF file into iTunes.
Make sure the iTunes CD Import Settings in Prefs is set to the MP3 encoder.
Right-Click on the AIFF file in the iTunes Library display and select Create MP3 Version.

  • Exacting Audio from a .MOV file?

I have a concert in a .MOV format and want to exact the audio so I can listen to it on my iPod. How do I do this? So is there an easy way to set where songs start and stop?

How about using QTPro to define the cuts you want, then exporting to a wave file that your Ipod will read?

  • Audio of .mp4 movie files getting distorted by 1 hour mark.

I converted some of my fave movies from DVD to .mp4 file format that my iPod supports. After I did so, I copied several flicks in .mp4 format to my iPod. Each of those movies is at least 2 hours in length. But the problem with iPods playing .mp4 vids is after 1 hour mark of the video, the audio gets distorted up the rest of the movie. My friend with iPod vid also experienced the same problem. We found out that if the movie is in .m4v format, the audio of the same movie length is smooth and clear. This make me think that iPod videos has bugs playing .mp4 video format that has more than an hour in length. Ironically, when I play .mp4 format in Quick time and iTunes (in my PC), the audio is smooth. Does anyone have an idea about that? I appreciate for the answer. Really. Thanks!

I think  is the contrary because the clip browser copies all the foleders needed. I got this opinion from another forum that copies into Final Cut:
"My workflow is to create a hard drive folder for the project, then use Clip Browser to import the clips from the card. I review the clips, labelling them, adding logging notes, setting the status and putting in essence marks as needed (the number of characters available for the essence mark description is fairly limited). I then open FCP, create and save a new project then call up XDCAM Transfer. I select the project folder and it will pull in all the clips. I then filter for OK status, occasionally create subclips then import. The clips come over to the bin, with their names and with the essence marks converted to markers. Obviously there are backups taken - I've not mentioned them."

  • Audio on my 'mov' files are a mess

I used 'Handbrake' to convert a few AVI files to Mov. There was an ATV preset in Handbrake and I used that. I tried every single option under Audio (e.g. Code, Mixdown, Bitrate), however the result is just a bunch of weird noises --- kind of like loud static.
    The video converted just fine.
Is there a somewhat easy way to convert AVI to ATV files? I know that there are specific specs for ATV -- isn't there something that would convert to these actual specs without too much trouble?
    http://www.apple.com/appletv/specs.html

first of all, "avi file" doesn't really tell us much about what the source file is.
AVI is just a container that could contain any number of different codecs.
tell us more about the actual source file, it's possible that it's too obscure for handbrake to convert.

  • Correct Format For Movie File

    Hello,
I am in the process of transferring old family film footage to digital files. The company I'm taking these reels to is recommending that I put them on an external hard drive in .mov format. They say that this will allow me to edit with iMovie. Your thoughts?
Also, at the present time when I upload my point and shoot Nikon camera and also when I upload my iPhone and iPad, the movie clips are loaded into iPhoto also along with the photos. Will I have the option to do this with these new files?
    Regards,
    Tom

You would need to consult the documentaion for the device you're using. You should be able to find it on the manufacturer's website.

  • No audio when playing .mov files, codec missing?? Please HELP!

Hey everyone, i recently exported a movie in submerge (a softWARE THAT lets u put subtitles into movies), i can watch it just fine in my computer, but when i put it in another, mac, i get the video but no audio... Im i missing a codec? i just downloaded the Xvid codec, but nothing, still no audio. What can i do? please help!!

Load the movie into QuickTime Player, open the Movie Inspector (Window menu), and look at the Format section. That will show the codecs used for the video and audio, the audio being the second one listed. Post that information here and someone can probably tell you what you'll need.
    Regards.

Open the same movie or another one that wasn't working and listen for sound.
If still no sound, follow this list back to Speaker setup and put it back where it was.

  • Audio format for movies

Apple claims that movies downloaded from the itunes store support surround sound but is it 5.1 channel sound?

HD movies are for the tv only.
They are 720p and audio can vary between stereo and 5.1 depending on how the studio encodes the title.

  • How can I format a movie file so it plays on FF3.6? my mp4 files are blocked due to a quicktime issue.

Creating a landing page for a client with embedded video. She prefers not to embed a YouTube video on her site. Is there a way I can embed an mp4 file in her site so that it will play in firefox 3.6? Now it is trying to launch quicktime, which firefox blocks due to extension instability. Thx.

If you have the latest QuickTime version then it should work.
You can also look at players like JW Player: http://www.longtailvideo.com/
    http://www.longtailvideo.com/support/jw-player/13/embedding-flash
    http://player.longtailvideo.com/player.swf
You can also consider to recode the file to ogg to allow Firefox to play the file natively.
