Audio from macbook only coming in as PCM (need dolby)

I have a 2011 macbook pro with a minidisplay port to hdmi adapter that I have connected to a receiver.
I have never had any trouble getting movie files that have 5 channel dts to play 5 channels on through my receiver, however...now it only picks up 2 channel PCM audio even with a file that has 5 channel and audio AND when 8 channel, 192hz is selected under midi options (and hdmi out is selected in the video player). I haven'y changed anything that I can see.. I have tried a different hdmi cable, and converted so I know those aren't the issue. I have also tried different ports on my receiver. They all work fine with other devices.
Please...I am dying to find out an answer to this! I appreciate any help. Thanks

The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 model 6,1 and Mid 2010 model 7,1 White Unibody have a Mini DisplayPort. The Early 2006 model 1,1 through Early 2008 model 4,1s plus the Early and Mid 2009 model 5,2s have Mini-DVI ports.
The Mini-DVI to HDMI doesn't carry audio. If you connect the MacBook using a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter you will probably need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo system for audio if your TV doesn't have separate RCA input plugs or a 3.5mm stereo input plug for audio with the HDMI plug.
The Mini DisplayPort to HDMI doesn't carry audio unless you have the Mid 2010 model 7,1 and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI. Check your TV manual to see if it has audio plugs that work with one of the HDMI ports.
If you have the Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody or Late 2009 model 6,1 White Unibody with the Mini DisplayPort rather than the Mini-DVI there is an adapter that uses the Mini DisplayPort and a USB port to combine video and audio to HDMI. It's only 2 channel stereo not 5.1 Dolby Surround.

Wireless internet connection is down from macbooks only. When try to connect wirelessly, macbook ask for PPPoE use name and password which I type and nothing happens ... macbook keeps asking for both but cannot connect/
I am unable to connect wireless with macbooks only but it's ok with an ethernet cable from macbook to timecapsule. Macbooks also access time capsule for backups wireless without a problem.
Also it's ok to connect to the internet wirelessly with windows based notebooks.
Hardware: 2T Timecapsule, Macbook 15, MacbookAir 11, 2 Sony Vaios. Both macbooks are running OSx 10.6.8 - All lastest firmware is installed.
I have turn off and on timpecapsule and modem. And downloaded lastes firmaware. Network has been working ok for at leat 30 days since I boiugth time capsule
Any suggestions?

Just a hunch. The Sony and iBook may not be able to handle WPA2 Personal Security, which is the default Security setting of the Time Capsule.
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Change the setting for Wireless Security to WPA/WPA2 Personal
Update to save settings

If you mean "can I play a video file's video part via AppleTV and the audio part via the Macbook" then the answer is no.
You could probably play the video on AppleTv and also play it on the Macbook and output the audio, but you would have to do this manually, and 2 applications accessing the same video file might cause stuttering playback issues. Additionally you'd have to manually sync the audio and lip sync problems are annoying at the best of times.
If you mean "can I watch a video from AppleTV and play separate music via iTunes on the Macbook", then the answer is yes.

Audio from MacBook to TV with HDMI not working?

I recently purchased a HDMI cord for my MacBook, but I don't seem to get any audio from my TV when it's hooked up. I've had no problems getting the image to display on my TV, but the sound won't work. I've already gone through System Preferences to see if there was even an option for output and the only one I saw was for my internal speakers. I had previously just hooked up my computer to a set of external speakers by by TV with an auxiliary cable, but I no longer have the speakers and need to find a different option.

Audio from Macbook to Samsung HDTV

Hi,
I have this common problem of trying to get audio from my Macbook when connecting it to my Samsung HDTV (40in)
I have a 2009 Macbook.
This is what I'm using. I'm not great on the jargon, but I think this is a HDMI cable for the video which works fine, but carries no audio.
The problem is the audio, which I have an RCA cable for, but maybe I'm not connecting it to the right place. I've tried all combinations though.
The only thing I can see that may be an issue is everyone seems to talk about red and white cables, mine are red and black, don't know if that makes any difference.
I also can't see anything in the TV menu to help with audio setup.
Can anyone help, it's driving me nuts!

HDMI 1 is actually labelled HDMI 1 (DVI) (not too clear in the pic)...maybe that's what you are referring to?
I do not have the same model TV as yours, however on mine, the small round AUDIO INPUT jack accepts the same kind of connector as that goes into the computer earphone jack. Therefore I use a cable with the same kind of connector on each end.

Getting audio from macbook to TV

Hi-
I am connecting my video from macbook to Olevial LCD via VGA, I get picture fine.
I'm using a Mini RCA to connect the audio, from my macbook headphone jack to the tv's audio inputs (not composite, the ones right next to the VGA input on the tv).
However, I still cannot get audio on the TV.
I've gone into audio settings on tv but there is nothing that would help.
Am I missing something?

When folks try to run speakers directly with a Mac Headphone output, they are often surprised to discover they will will need a small amplifier to run speakers. The sound output level is very low. Great for headphones. Not great for speakers.
If the input on your TV goes directly to the speakers without being amplified, the sound level will be very low. Can you use the red and white RCA inputs? Some users report better results with those, if present.

Thanks for visiting my page. I would like to transfer video and audio from my Macbook mid-2010 (specs below), and would like to do so with minimum lag. I m aware Apple TV has a feature which allows me to do that, however considering it is connected via either wi-fi or bluetooth (not sure which) I feel streaming an HD movie or playing an MMO will cause significant lag and/or a distorted picture.
So with that said, what is the best way to transfer video and audio with minimal lag?
Also, as a part II of the question, will the picture be distorted regardless if my TV is 60 inches?

The easiest and most reliable option is to connect your Mac to the TV wired. Just buy a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter and a HDMI cable to connect your MacBook to your TV. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4241 Image and sound will appear on the TV automatically.
If the adapter and cable are OK, you won't get the picture distorted. Your Mac will try to use the maximum resolution the GPU allows in order to adapt the picture to your TV. It may not support the maximum resolution of the TV, but picture won't be distorted

That is because the 2009 MBP does not support audio via the minidisplay port. You will have to tap the audio output port for audio and use the RCA audio input connections on the TV.

If your media source is limited to a DVD disk, then a DVD reader will somehow have to be employed to read that disk. Apple sells a Superdrive specifically designed for use with the MBA, but I've found that many others will work almost equally as well.
Some DVD disks already contain a digital file suitable for play, when directly copied off the disk. However, for more traditional DVD movies, it will require an application to perform what is called "ripping", to convert and copy the DVD's contents to a file that can be moved and played off the disk. I have used an application called "Handbrake" with reasonable success.
After ripping, you may need another application to convert it to a format specific to the media player you may choose to eventually use. e.g. to convert into a file that iTunes may import.

MacBook Pro - I've just bought an S27b550V Samsung monitor to connect to the MacBook Pro but even with hdmi adaptor and usb connection can only get video. I set sound control to recognise the usb output but still nothing but a faint muted sound from the monitor. How do I get audio to work?

I don't think that a USB connection is going to do anything - as you've a Mac with a Mini DisplayPort that, I don't believe, will carry audio over HDMI, you'd need to use the 3.5-mm analog/optical combo jack optical jack to get video to your Samsung monitor.

I'm using a MacBook Pro 8.2 and want to stream video to à Sony Bravia TV. I've connected them with à cable from the Thunderbolt port to the HDMI port on the TV. I get the video images but no sound. Is there à way to do this or do I need à separate audio cable?

There is great risk of confusion since I am seeing the words in Swedish and it is sometimes difficult to tell what the translation should be, but here goes:
In the System Report there is only one topic with the word sound: "Sound (built-in)"
Under that topic it says "Intel HD Sound" and I can choose a nummer of options, but only one for "Speakers" and it says "Connection: internal"
There is also an option for "HDMI/DisplayPort" which says "Connection: screen" (or monitor)

Audio from Macbook

Suddenly my Audio icon on the menu bar died, it turned grey and no audio is playing out from my Macbook. When i checked the System Preferences, it is only on Digital Output, Internal Speakers is not available for me to select.
BUT, when i use my headphone, the Audio icon comes back and audio is fine. However, i saw a red light in the Headphone jack??!!! :o
I have just upgraded the software but still the same.
What is happening and what should I do?

I have exactly the same problem. If I wiggle a toothpick nothing happens to fix the sound icon being greyed out and immovable. In the Sound system preferences only Digital output is available, no internal speakers. If I plug in a headset, it does recognize that and will output to them. When I unplug them usually the red light stays on until I 'reset' it by plugging headset in/out or by a toothpick. It just started doing this within the last couple of weeks.
