Audio Gain and Normalize - different in CS4 to CS3 - problem

Before in CS3, if an audio clip was peaking into the red I'd just right click, select Audio Gain, then click Normalize and then OK - the audio would be normalized and no more peaking into the red. Now in CS4, the right click Audio Gain brings up 4 options. Say if the Peak Amplitude is -0.5dB, which of the 4 options do I select to normalize, and what dB number would I put in to stop peaking into the red? I've tried lots of things but the sound meter still shows peaking! This used to be super easy in CS3—what is method now for CS4?
Any help please!!

One thing to consider is that if your Audio has already been recorded and you're peaking, you can Normalize, or otherwise process your Audio, but you're already clipping signals. It takes a lot to try and restore that "clipped" signal and you can only come close. The -3db/-5db is great for when the recording is being done. If the levels were exceeded at the time of the recording, and that is all that you have, then most processes in post will only be working with the clipped signal.
I usually shoot for -5db in the recording process and then maintain something in the -5db to -3db range when editing. This way, I am working with the full, un-clipped signal.
Also remember that with most "normalization" processes, you just establish the max for that signal, clipped or not, and then bring up the quieter passages to relate to that. Is that what you really want to do? Better to record the Audio at the proper level, with no clipping to begin with.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • Adobe Crashes upon adjusting Audio Gain and when exporting

First a bit about the systems in question
I have four identical edit bays. Each has a Dual Core 2.5 Ghz Pentium processor, 3.0 gbs of ram, a single sata drive split into two partitions (system 30 gb and video 470 gb). I am running up to date PPro 5.0.2, freshly installed on virgin drives. I was running Avsynth and FFdshow as a way to be able to import my old MJPEG footage, but thanks to Colin Brougham, I have that particular demon slain (and I am removing those two programs).I have two of the bays with the most up to date 64 bit manufacturer video and audio drivers, and two bays with Windows 7 automatically installed video and audio drivers. The problem is the same in all four bays.
We dump in one of two ways: either a direct DV dump via firewire or downloading .MXF files from our Panasonic P2 cameras via USB (can't seem to get the firewire PC dump to work correctly). The project settings I am using are DV-NTSC - Standard 48 Khz, with a slight change of requiring upper fields first (we're using a Maxx500 playout server, and it requires upper fields first). We have been experiencing intermittent crashes for a week and a half, but in the last few days they have picked up (no new updates applied, so its not that). I have two culprits:
One is an error code that thanks to this thread I know is related to the audio gain. My problem is that I have done everything I can think of and still no luck. It's been crashing with such regularity that my reporters are saving every few minutes, and I have the auto save set to 5 minutes. Today I had to reinstall this bay because it was crashing every time audio gain was adjusted.
My other problem relates to export. I use the MainConcept MPEG Encoder to output mpegs for the playout server, and about every fourth or fifth time the program will crash on export. Its not a pain to recover from, since at that point the reporters have saved and merely have to reopen and reset up the export, but it is happening far to regularly. Event Viewer references windows/system32/ntdll.dll as the faulting module. Again, I am having this error on two different bays, one with manufacturer drivers and one with Windows 7 installed drivers.
I know that despite my efforts I've probably not given enough info, so let me know what you need.

...downloading .MXF files from our Panasonic P2 cameras via USB (can't seem to get the firewire PC dump to work correctly).
That's correct. Avoid FW offloading on a PC; in fact, while it used to be the way to interface a P2 camera with a Mac, it's all USB there now, as well. Stick with USB, and you'll be fine. (I know this wasn't the gist of your thread, but I thought I'd shine a little light on that.)

This is known/acknowledged/as-yet-unsquashed bug, assuming that you're remapping your MXF audio channels from the two mono channels that are originally produced by the camera to a single stereo channel.  You may be doing this manually, in the bin, or you might have a preference set to do this automatically on import (Edit > Preferences > Audio > Source Channel Mapping; if it's set to Stereo, try setting it to Use File). This bug only seems to rear its head when the mono channels of an MXF clip are remapped to stereo; if they remain as mono, you can use the Audio Gain command successfully.
If, however, your audio channels aren't stereo, post back; there might be something else going on.

When you say "MainConcept MPEG Encoder," are you referring to the MPEG2 encoder that is part of Premiere/AME, or are you referring to some sort of add-on encoder?

  • Pics view differently in CS4 v CS3

Has anyone noticed that images in CS4 view differently to CS3.  Using calibrated monitors with exactly the same icc profiles, pics in PS CS4 seem to be a lot flatter, lacking colour depth. (open the same image in both apps side by side and compare)
It has been suggested that CS4 talks directly to the graphics card, bypassing color sync, to improve speed.
Is this causing issues in colour critical operations and if so how is it fixed.

I have disabled OpenGL but there is still a difference between the two.
Did you restart Photoshop after disabling Open GL? With Open GL off altogether Photoshop CS4 will display colors the same as CS3. Any differences must be to do with monitor profiles, as far as I'm aware CS3 and 4 also behave the same in these respects.

  • Audio Levels are completely different when exported from Premiere to Audition?

    Hi all,
I'm hoping someone can help me out here. I've adjusted the audio gain and volume levels on an interview I'm editing and it sounds pretty darn good in Premiere Pro. I exported the sequence to Audacity to do some hiss removal but quickly realized everything is different. The volume levels are way to high on lots of my clips? Why is this? I cannot really work with it in this current state because it would mean re-doing lots of work I've already done in Premiere. Any one got any ideas?
    All the best
    Kevin

Also, in the sequence the Edit in Audition option is greyed out? I can't round trip and work through the clips individually? Is there something I need to switch on or something?

  • Quality Audio Gain vs. Audio Mixer

Is there a quality difference between using Audio gain or normalization instead of only increasing oder decreasing audio volume in the audio mixer?

A friend of mine - coming from Audio Applications working with ProTools and Logic says, that Gain always require resample and new quantization that results in quality loss...?! I don't hear any difference...!?

i recently got new mac air and transferred my old version garageband projects now when I open them in 10.0.2 I can add new tracks but then nothing can record, shows its receiving sound from software inst. but no sound. I checked audio preferences and they are set as they should be. I tried it in all the other older projects and same issue anyone have any experience like this very frustrating.  Can one download old version still ? or can you run both versions on OS10.9.5 ?

Ok, either my question was too long or nobody seems to have an answer. Sad, either way
Here's something I found out in the meantime, maybe this is interesting for somebody or maybe - problem's not totally solved - enough info for any of you to give me further advice.
When I start Logic Core Audio driver de-activated, I can open old songs. Then I save them in a new folder with all audio files and a new name. And I remove all EXS24 instruments as well as the Space Designer. I quit Logic, re-open with Core Audio activated and I can open the song.
Problem no.1: EXS24 instruments don't find the appropriate samples, but EXSMananger Pro did help me with this. Same problem with Space Designer, which doesn't find the impulse responses, connected to a certain preset.
Two questions, every idea would be great!
    - Is there any way to teach Space Designer Presets where to look for impulse respones. I can load IR samples directly and create a new preset, but I can't use my old ones.
    - Is it possible to install Logic from scratch over an existing version? Or how should I de-install everything connected with Logic and then install a fresh version from CD?
    Thank you again,
    Joern

  • Audio gain, treble and bass

    Hi there,
Again, equating this software with Premiere Pro...in the past I treated my audio with a few basic tweaks, namely right click on the audio and choose "audio gain - normalize". I'd then add some bass and treble depending on the person and then ensure the levels weren't peaking..and that was pretty much it (I know..shameful I'm sure).
On looking at the audio facilities in FCP I don't see any of my comfort zone stuff..i.e. normalisation, bass and treble..eeek. Do they expect me to dabble into the realms of the unknown and use "sound track pro". I don't think the learning curve could take it right now.
Hope you can help with some FCP audio settings.
    Regards
    Carol Ann

    Hi carol,
What version of FCP are you using?
In FCP 5, the closest thing you'll get to a normalisation feature is the AUDynamicProcessor (Effects>Audio Filters>Apple> AU DynamicsProcessor)
Don't be alarmed by the different parameters of this filter, because really you only need to adjust the 'attack time' to around 0.02, and the 'compression threashold' to around -40, then alter the volume of the clip to bring it up to desired level... if you get what i mean...
This filter is also highly invaluable for it's 'master gain' feature, which enables you to increase the volume of a clip above and beyond the maximum (+12)... really handy for poorly recorded interviews.
I use this filter for a lot my audio woes, and it really does the job.

If you have been using the mac.com Apple ID to make iTunes purchases recently, then there should be no issues continuing to use it with the new iPhone. I would abandon the new ID as you will never get Apple to merge the two IDs. I have had a mac.com ID for years and continue to use it with my iPhone 4S.
Tell us the issues that you encounter trying to set up the iPhone with the mac.com account.

  • Audio Dolby and MPG2 showing up different lengths

    Hello everyone!
I have been compressing my FCP project with compressor into a MPG2 file and a Dolby Audio file for use in DVD studio pro. Only problem is that the audio tracks and the video tracks are slightly different sizes in the timeline, like only a frame or two. What is happening? is there any way to exactly align just the start points? Anyone have any experience with these issues?
    Hoping for some pro-advice!
P.S. thanks for all the help in here over the past few years!

I just posted a similar but slightly different question here.
This is fairly standard behavior - you can see this in play by opening an AIFF file in Quicktime, looking at the length, then dropping it into DVDSP and see the length reported differently. I've read a few possible explanations but I don't know exactly why. Something to do with Dolby and the way it interprets frames?
As the other person said, if the audio and video are in sync that is the bottom line. Watch clips at different parts of the video (definitely paying attention at the end). If it's in sync, you're all set. What your eyes and ears see are what other people will too, and that's way more important than what DVDSP tells you..
My problem is that the stereo AIFF files and 5.1 AC-3 files are WAY different lengths and the video/5.1 loses sync. A different dilemma altogether.

  • How can I use a different driver for audio input and output?

I did a search of course, and came up with something about an aggregate. I have no idea what this is, how to do it, or if it would even work for me.
What I am trying to do is:
    1) Record into Logic Express using my Tascam US-122.
    2) Have playback come out of my computer sound system, not the Tascam.
If I go over to the Audio setup window, I can only record when the driver is set to Tascam US-122. Likewise, I can only listen to sound when my Built-In Audio is selected. It gets rather annoying going between the two.
So, would this aggregate thing solve my problem? If so, how do I do it? Thanks for any help!
    -allen

Yes it should do what you want.
Go to "Audio Midi Setup", and go to the Audio menu and click "Open Aggregate Device Editor". The interface is pretty simple but if you do get stuck, just use the help function in Audio Midi Setup, as it has a step by step guide.
Then when you return to logic, go to the Preferences>Audio>Drivers section and select Aggregate Device as the new driver rather than either the built in sound or the tascam. Then the inputs and outputs will apply to BOTH devices.

  • LPX changes audio gain on import

    Hey all,
I'm having a small issue with an audio sample that LPX seems to be changing the gain to when importing.
I'm recording a spoken vocal. At a certain point, one bit has some mouth sounds. I export this clip in aiff, open it in Izotope RX, eliminate the noise, export in aiff (up to this point it keeps the same gain), and then I import it back into LPX and the gain has changed from the original. It seems to have added some high end too. Up to the first to last step, the audio file has remained unchanged.
Anybody know what might be going on?
    Thanks,
    Z

Thanks, Jeff.  I should have specified that doing a match frame on each clip was not something I was looking forward to.  The sequence is more or less complete and doing a match frame on each talking head clip individually would be mind numbing.  I don't want to numb my mind.
So, I didn't find a "reset" button per se, however, if anyone else cares to know (and because I don't find this documented in any of the online tutorials I've found), here's what I did to satisfy my situation:
To reset audio gain on a large selection of clips in Peremiere Pro CC after you've messed up the audio levels with "Normalize all peaks":
Select all clips (or any subset of the larger whole)
Right-click > Audio Gain (Actually I have a shortcut set to the "G" key for this)
Choose "Normalize MAX peak" and set the value.
This doesn't actually "reset" the original levels, but much to my happy surprise, I discovered that the Normalize GAIN feature seems to use the ORIGINAL audio values (not the newly messed up levels).
    All's well that ends well!
I hope this helps someone else!

  • Audio output to two different sets of speakers?

I run a cable from my MBP's headphones jack to a small amp to drive internet radio to my café's speakers, but then my kids want to watch a YouTube video and I have to say No, as the audio from their movie will be sent to the café's speakers, too.
I was wondering if there might be a way to separate the two audio sources and drive one (radio) to the ceiling speakers, while keeping the browser audio from YouTube for the MBP's own speakers for the kids to enjoy.
    Thanks, people!

    Hi Alex,
I suspect the reason you haven't received any replies yet is because no one knows a way to do it. Certainly others are trying:
    http://osx86.co/f19/audio-tricks-or-more-like-when-aggregate-devices-t1645/
My thought is to output one audio from the audio-out port as usual, and another from a USB port with a device such as this:
    http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic
The problem is software to force one soundstream to go to one output, and another to go to a different output. I do not know if that exists at this time, at least at a price less than it would cost to simply buy another computer.

  • How to create audio, video, and photo in a list view format

I'm creating a webstire entirely out of Flash using CS5 for a paranormal investigation group. In the past, using a Website Tonight template from GoDaddy had placed either an audio, video, or photograph with text above each item discusssing the content. Now, they would like this type of feature in the Flash website. I'm new to Flash, but seasoned in many other Adobe products ... not that this helps ... much!
Anyways, the website is looking great aside from this one set back, so I'm hoping someone out there can give me a helping hand. I'm willing to purchase a third-party template, but to incorporate that into our Flash file, seems daunting.
    AUDIO
We need to load an audio that can play, pause, rewind, loop, and stop at the very least.
Then have text describing the situation around the audio.
repeat ... and so forth ...
New audio will be added to this section every week or so, and all the components need to scroll as the screen fills up. When adding new audio, we would add the new audio and text to the top of the list, pushing the remaining audio files down.
    VIDEO
We need to load video footage with all the button features needed to play, stop, etc. I have found adding video quite easy, but to get the player to move with the text as the frame it is contained in scrolls down is another story. How do you do that?
Text describing the video contents will be above or next to the video player.
repeat ... and so forth ...
New video will be added to this section every week or so, and all the  components need to scroll as the screen fills up. When adding new video,  we would add the new video and text to the top of the list, pushing the  remaining video files down.
    PHOTOS
    ditto as others
    Thanks!!

As mentioned, building a custom application can be tricky, especially if you are not very familiar with Flash.
So you want a Web page with an audio player and selection list at the top (or where ever) and then a video player section, along with its playlist, and then at the bottom of the page you want a photo display area... Is that correct? and the scrolling you mentioned is because the page needs to be long enough to hold all 3 components? is that right?
Have you instead considered just using 3 different frames, one frame for each component and simple buttons to jump from audio to video to photos?
Or, skip the scrolling in Flash and let the html/css take care of the scrolling, just like any normal Web page. Just make the .swf as long as needed to display all your content.
Since you are new at this type of a project, I'd suggest you start small, take the project in steps... just build the audio player... then the video player... then your photo slide show..
Only after you have 3 working moduals would you but them together into one .fla
And yes, learn to use xml for ALL the data, audio, video, and photos.... very easy to update without having to re-publish any of the Flash.
Here is a good source for tutorials:
    http://www.gotoandlearn.com/index.php?currentpage=11
    Flash and xml
    http://www.gotoandlearn.com/index.php?currentpage=13
learn to use NetStream to play your videos, much more versatile and powerful than using the FLVPlayback component
But learning how to incorporate xml into your Flash project is very important in a project like this. And then broken down into 3 components, it's really not that tough to build a project like this.
    Best wishes,
    Adninjastrator
