Audio garbled on import from Canon XA10 to FCPX

I'm running the current FCPX on the current Yosemite OS on a maxed out Late 2012 Mac Mini.  Just bought a Canon XA10 and recorded HiDef clips to the internal HD.  During recording I monitored the audio on headphones and it was good.  When I play back the clips on the camera, again the audio is good.  But when I import them to FCPX the audio is garbled.  You can make out the sync comments but the audio is terrible, not anywhere close to what I heard outside of FCPX.  First I imported all 12 clips.  Then I tried just importing 1 clip to a different Library.  Even tried exporting a .mov from the project and playing it on Quicktime. Always same result. Canon, Mac or FCPX problem?  Thanks!

With the current footage you are using I cannot think of a reason why FCP X is messing with the audio.
Things to try:
Shoot more footage on a different card with different settings. Avoid mixing different types of footage on the one card/storage device.
Try adjusting Project audio settings in FCP X e.g.. 5.1 to stereo, stereo to dual mono etc.
Tinker until you hit a workable combination if you are lucky.
BTW: I searched the FCP X forum and there is info regarding the XA10 and capturing, some good and bad reports but nothing definitive.
At least a few users have had success with that camera using FCP X.

  • Importing from CANON XA10

Now I realise that some folk may have the US version of the XA10 but this topic is regarding the the European model.
According to Canon this camera records 1080@50i by default ( option to record at 25pfs) However when using Final Cut7's Log & Transfer/ Settings: import as ProRes, the clips are listed as 25P, yes 25P.
Now then when you bring the clips onto a timeline, the recommended settings to match the clips (according to Apple) show up as NO FIELD DOMINANCE.
    Very odd !
What does all this mean.Well I can not produce a SD/DVD from this footage via FCP without terrible interlacing issues.
Apparantly Canon were not aware of this and began looking into it. Needless to say I am still awaiting a response. Maybe it's something that I am doing wrong, or maybe it is a Final Cut 7 issue and has been resolved in FinalCut X.
If there is anyone out there who knows what I'm on about, then please feel free to contribute.

    Hi All,
       From an XA10 Forum
The XA10 records 25p (PAL) and 30p (NTSC) as PsF (Progressive Segmented Frame).
What that means is that each progressive frame is divided into 2 fields and recorded as 50i (or 60i).
When importing the files, the NLE must understand to interpret the footage as 25p.
Some NLEs (Premiere Pro CS 5.5) will detect the PsF automatically and interpret correctly, other NLEs may need to be instructed.
The biggest error is for the NLE to tag the footage as true interlaced and then apply a deinterlacing algorithm in order to produce a 25p file.
Once you sort out the workflow for your particular NLE, it's not a big deal- you just have to figure it out.

  • When importing from Canon XL2, audio is delayed by 5 seconds

When I import from Canon XL2, the audio track is there, but it is off by a few seconds. At first it was only about 1 or 2 seconds, but when I re-imported it got worse. It's fine when I import through iMovie, but I lose my multiple audio tracks.
I know I can re align on the timeline, but that's not the point!
    Thanks for help

You may have nearly filled up your hard disc.
1 hour of DV is about 13GB. Trying to capture a 2nd hour would take you up to about 26GB of space used up on your hard disc.
It's better to capture to an internal disc, or to a FireWire-connected external disc, as USB - even USB 2.0 - can't necessarily keep up with the constantly sustained data throughput speeds which DV needs.
A Mac needs about 10% of your total hard disc space to be empty, to allow for its internal 'housekeeping', log files, virtual memory files, etc. So if you have an 80GB internal disc, with, say, 13GB of operating system & programs, plus, say, 20GB of pictures, plus, say, 13GB of documents, and you add 13GB (1 hour's worth) of video, that's 59GB, and you'll need about 8GB of free space, that's 67GB accounted for, leaving about 13GB empty for your 2nd hour.
But that spare 13GB of spare space may be scattered around the disc, and not all in one sequential region, which may be why you're getting stuttering.
Not only that, but there may be 'dropouts' on the tape (brief signal disappearance) which may not show on the camcorder (..because many camcorders substitute a previous frame of video for any damaged frame..) but may only show up when you try importing. This may happen if, for instance, you recorded at a slower than normal speed, e.g; LP speed instead of Standard Play speed.
So check, first, how much empty space you have on your internal disc, and see if your external disc can be attached by FireWire, instead of the - what's becoming almost ubiquitous - USB connection.

  • How do I import directly from Canon XA10 with Final Cut X?

How do I import directly from Canon XA10 with Final Cut X?

I have an XA10, and importing is quite simple.  But you do have to make sure your camera is set to the proper settings to allow you to import the files into FCPX.
First, make sure the camera is powered on.  Connect it through the USB connection.  Then open the camera's viewfinder and press the button on the side of the camera that allows you to see the videos you've shot in the viewfinder.  (This toggle button toggles between seeing what the camera is pointed at live and seeing the thumbnails of the video you've already shot that are stored on the internal memory card.)  Now, the camera will present you with a menu asking which memory card you want to look at (there's an internal flash memory card, plus you can insert SD cards as well).  Choose the memory card on which your videos are stored within the camera, and then you'll be good to go.
Now you can go into your FCPX event and do the Import from Camera.  Now the Import from Camera interface will open up and you'll be able to select the XA10, where it will present you with all the videos that are on the camera's memory card that you selected.
From here,  you can select individual videos and import them, or you can set in and out points on videos and just import the parts you want.

  • Importing From Canon Vixia HF M30 to Final Cut Pro

Hey there, I have been trying to import to final cut with some success. Importing From Canon Vixia HF M30 from my sd card.
    I used the easy setup.
    FORMAT HD
USE HDV APPLE INTERMEDIATE CODEC 1080I60
I go to log and transfer select the clips I need and click add to que.
So perfect there are my clips in my bin, I bring them to my timeline and a green line appears above my video, uugggggh. I know this is a rendering issue but why.
Please help does anyone know why this is happening.
This is very frustrating, I have been trying to read the other discussions I didn't see anything on it let alone the info on the net, trying different things just not working for me.
    Thanks Gang

Your camera records AVCHD. Convert to prores 422 or prores 422(LT) on log and transfer and make sure your sequence matchs your footage.

  • Why won't Aperture 2 support RAW files imported from Canon 60D when it does from my Olympus DSLR?

Why won't Aperture 2 support RAW files imported from Canon 60D when it does from my Olympus DSLR?

I'm afriad the fact that your Olympus dSLR is supported is no relevance.
The Raw from every model of camera is different. Note: that's every model not every brand. So, the NEF produced by a Nikon D40 is not the same as the NEF produced by a D60, the CR2 produced by a Canon 350 is not the same as the CR2 produced by a Canon 400.
Support for individual camera models has to be added one by one, and Apple will update the OS to work with the most recent version of the software. That's an incentive for you to keep up-to-date. So, for support for your 60D you'll need 10.6.5 plus Aperture 3 and/or iPhoto 11.

Running LR 5.6 on OSX 10.9.4.  Can't import from Canon 7D. Any ideas?

For future reference, if there is an error message, you should probably quote it in your original message on the subject.
"Could not be read" indicates that you do not have WRITE permission to the destination directory when you try to import, so change your permissions.
"not recognized" might indicate the camera card itself is corrupted or the card reader is failing ... or the problem might go away if you change your permissions.

  • How to import video from canon xa10

I can import video file from canon xa-10 camcorder to Final Cut Pro X. Please help.

I have an XA10 and do this all the time.
As Tom said, you just need to connect the camera using the USB cable and then do an "Import from Camera" from within FCPX.
And yes, once you choose which clips (or which portions of clips) you want to import and then close the import window, FCPX has to transcode them.  However, you can begin editing while it is working on transcoding the files.
However, if you disconnect the camera before FCPX has finished the transcode, the media won't be there the next time.  This stuff isn't magic.  It still has to transcode.  The only "magic" of FCPX is that you can start editing the footage before the transcode is complete...assuming, of course, you leave the media connected.
Copying files over first and then trying to import does not work.  You have to do it from the camera.
The difference would be if you were recording to an SD card (which the XA10 will do), instead of the camera's built-in flash memory.  You can disconnect the camera and just connect a card reader (and the card, of course).  But the same principle would apply.  You could start editing while FCPX is transcoding, but don't expect it to all be there if you disconnect the card reader or shut down FCPX before finishing the transcoding process.
    Hope that helps.

  • Can someone help with importing video from Canon XA10 (AVCHD) into PE 11?

In PE 11 when I import video from my canon xa10 (avchd) the quality is terrible, I also have a canon xa20, 60D and gopro that I video with and they all turn out with great video quality.  Is there a reason why the xa10 video quality is bad? Setting I need to change?

    Thanks for the follow up.
In Premiere Elements 11 and 12 takes over setting the project preset based on the properties of the first file drag to the Timeline. Sometimes it does it right; sometimes not. You can check what the project has set by using the readings from Edit Menu/Project Settings/General and the readings for Editing Mode, Timebase, Frame Size, and Pixel Aspect Ratio even if the fields look grayed out. If the project preset is set for NTSC AVCHD Full HD1080p30, then the Edit Menu/Project Settings/General should be as represented in the following screenshot
Please refer to setting the project preset yourself manually and then importing the source media into the project.

  • Downloading avchd video from Canon XA10 to iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011)

I have a mid 2011 iMac running Mountain Lion. I typically download HD AVCHD video from my Canon XA10 camcorder by inserting an SD card from the camera into the side of the computer. When I click on the SD card, thumbnails of the video footage appear on the iMac and when I click on a thumbnail, the clip opens in Quicktime. Now I can view the clip. This is all fine.
Here's my question: when I look at the Quicktime movie inspector, the following appears:
The original footage is 1920 x 1080 since I shoot at the highest setting on the camera (MXP).
But the "Current Size:" above in the inspector is 1736 x 977.
Does Quicktime degrade the footage? Is there a way to preserve the full 1920 x 1080?
When I import the footage into iMovie (which I do directly from the chip into iMovie) is the quality degraded as well, even though the transfer into iMovie doesn't involve Quicktime (at least I don't think it does).
If, after sharing a clip from iMovie via Quicktime to create a file to upload to Vimeo, I can view it in Quicktime and the same thing happens:
The inspector says "Current Size: 1736x 977."
Any advice? Am I doing something wrong and as a result losing resolution?
    Thank you,
    David

  • Import from Canon Legria HR200 to iMovie11

When I connect camcorder CANON Legria HF200 through USB in PC connect mode, it is not possible to use "Import from camera" to import video files from camcorder Canon Legria HF200 iMovie 11 because only Insight camera appears. Canon Legria HF200 is recognized as USB external device. I use 32GB SDHC card FAT32 format. The same result is when I put the card in SD reader, or when I copy the folder to HDD. What am I doing wrong?

Hook up the usb cable to the camera with the camera in "play" mode. Then plug the other end of the usb into your computer. The screen on your camera should then ask to what do you want connect the camera. Choose "computer/printer." Then boot iMovie and press import. Most likely if iMovie then asks you which clips you wish to import, everything should work.
However, you are correct - the camera is not listed as a supported camera.

  • No import from Canon Rebel XT camera to iPhoto

iPhoto 6 fails to import from my Canon Rebel XT. Nothing happens. I've tried every suggestion I can find on the Apple and Canon sites, and I'm stymied. Canon's said to reinstall their Solution Disk, so I did that. Also needed a EOS Utility upgrade download. The battery in my camera is fully charged. I've followed all the directions I can find! I'm not particularly computer literate--maybe you can tell. I thought this would be easy, but I've spent half a day on it already!

Is the camera set to 'PC connection' in the last (5th) menu in the camera settings. That should do the trick. Another option is to get an inexpensive USB 2.0 card reader. That will work really well also and import the images much faster. Then you just remove the card and put it in the reader when you want to download your images.
