Audio Glitch on FCE project

Hi, I am very green to Macs and FCE. I am working on a FCE project where I imported the audio (I am muting audio from film clips), and I noticed that at various points in the project there is a audio glitch (like a skip). I checked the original mp3 and it is good. I tried to import the sound again into a new audio track, but the glitch is still there and in the same locations. Has anyone encountered this? Any idea on how to fix it?
Also, does multiple layer of video add to the file size if you are not using the video?
Thanks for the help... Loving my Mac! Never going back to PC.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
You should convert your audio to AIFF at the same sample rate as your Sequence. See this link:

  • Audio Glitches on Timeline, but not when played in QT?

I had a client send me his project on a harddrive.
They exported a .mov file from FCP and it has no audio glitches when played with Quicktime.
But if i drag that file to a timeline and watch it through my DSR-25 to a NTSC monitor, it has audio glitches in certain spots.
Always at that spot though and if i watch the file in Quicktime, it plays fine.
All audio was exported originally out of FCP using Quicktime Movie with 48khz, 16 bit stereo so nothing needed to be rendered.
Seems like it has something to do with it going over via firewire through my DSR-25.
Has anyone else had this problem.
I can't make a Master DVCam tape for this master because of these audio glitches.
    Thanks for any help,
    Brian

I read a post about a user having this same sort of issue.
He said when he turns off his video layer, in my case just V1, the audio played fine.
    Same with mine.
So it seems to be an issue with the video track playing with the audio track.
If i export it and bring it back in, will it just create that same audio glitch?
Guess i will have to try.
Anyone have this issue or similiar?
    Thanks,
    Brian

  • Audio Glitch in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 Timeline (not a clip problem - it's the timeline space)

I have an audio glitch that appears to be tied to a space in my timeline and not to a certain audio clip.  If I drag or move the audio clip further up or down the timeline it plays fine.  If I move a different audio file into this area, the audio drops out in the same area, even with volumes set where they need to be.  There are absolutely no keyframes set in this area and I want to be clear about that.   However, this issue did come up only the software froze on me as I was loading my project.  I believe my best bet is to delete delete my media cach and media cache files so that clips are reconformed... unless someone has additional input or has experienced similar issue with the sound.
As a note, I also reinstalled Quicktime.  I am working with AVI files/aac auio codec.

No. You will not find any Master Track Keyframes. These will be on the Audio Track, and will be attached to the Track, regardless of what Clip you have there. Here is a look at Track Keyframes, not to be confused with Clip Keyframes from PrPro 2.0:

  • Audio Glitch in Apple DVD player when at the end of a story

Hi Could anyone shine a light on why when I build and open up my dvd project in Apple dvd player there is an audio glitch. But on the original mpeg there is no audio glitch there. I have chapter markered my project in fcp. I have ten storys and one chapter in each story.
when played on a dvd player the glitches are not heard
Any help on this matter would be great.

in Apple dvd player there is an audio glitch. But on the original mpeg there is no audio glitch there.
when played on a dvd player the glitches are not heard
Have you played the DVD with more than one player without hearing glitches? What, exactly is the glitch? A click? In any case what you report suggests that there is a problem with Apple's DVD Player.
Do you hear the glitch when you play the DVD (the physical disk) with Apple's DVD Player?
I seem to be having a similar problem, but I haven't burned a disk and used a DVD player to play it. See this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1863240&tstart=0
DVDSP shows my soundtrack file to be longer than what it actually is. Is that the case in your situation?

  • Blu-Ray 5.1 DD SS Audio Glitch after import into Encore.

Working on burning a full length blu-ray with two audio track options (stereo audio, 5.1 DD SS)  I'm not having any problems connecting menu's or burning.  After the initial burn everything was working flawlessly except when I played the video with the 5.1 DD track I noticed the audio would glitch at certain parts.  The glitch sounds like a CD skipping (i.e the speaker would say Bubble and it would sound like Bu-Bu-Bubble) the audio doesn't go out of sync when this happens, it's small and the video keeps playing but it's still noticeable and an issue.
Both audio tracks are one complete track, no cuts or seperate clips.  The 5.1 track is .ac3.  The stereo track is mixed from the 5.1 track and doesn't have the glitch at all.  I've gone back and checked the source audio and haven't noticed any transients or spikes at the places where it glitches.  The problem occurs when I pull it into encore.  Even before burning the audio will error inside the timeline preview.  I'm not transcoding the audio or video at all as I have manually compressed the video already.  Everything is perfect except for this glitch and I'm all out of ideas of what Encore is doing to the audio to create the skipping glitch any thoughts or ideas would be great.  Hope i've given enough information.  I'm new to the forum so please let me know if i've left anything out or missed any etiquette.

Most likely he used Apple's Compressor, Bill - the system specs state FCP7 is being used.
Bitrate is a valid question though.....this should be no higher than 640kbps (and IMHO certainly no lower - DD sucks at the best of times)
Sorry for the long reply back guys.  We had the audio work for this project outsourced so I had to await details to your questions.  The bitrate is 457.67 kbps so the bit rate shouldn't be causing the issue.  The audio was completely pre mixed in Pro Tools and they just sent us a ready to use .ac3 file.  Hope this helps!
    CAleb
    Hey Caleb.
Thanks for the details -and that is probably your problem.
457.67kbps is nothing like DVD-Video compliant, and almost certainly not BluRay compliant either.
For BluRay, you should be using 448 or preferably 640kbps.
DVD uses either 448 or 384kbps Dolby Digital, and the figure you are giving is extremely odd, looking almost like a VBR encoding which DD should never, ever be. Using 384 gives you unidirectional content above 10kHz (IE, mono) and 448 gets it all the way up to around 14 or 15kHz before it goes unidirectional. In all frankness, there is no good reason at all to use Dolby Digital as it sucks - badly - and all BluRay players are required to decode at the very least DTS Core Audio (1536kbps) which is fully discrete all the way to 20kHz.
I think whoever you outsourced this to got the DD encoding wrong - simples!

  • Why is the audio on my finalized project different than when I'm editing it?

Why is the audio on my finalized project louder than the when I watch it on the editing screen? The background music doesn't turn down when I watch the final product and I cannot hear the clip, but on the small/edit screen it works perfectly.

Have you already exported it and is it there where it messes up? If you are just clicking the button that makes the video full-screen in iMovie, that's your problem. For some reason, many people have movie glitches when they do that, like the video pausing for no reason, loss of sound, and other glitches. Just export it and it will most likely work.

  • Serious audio glitch problem in 9.1.1 - please help!

Got a problem with audio glitching that is driving me insane - hopefully someone can help (please! :_))
I'm on Logic 9.1.1 on a recent MacPro using 10.5.8, 12Gb memory. I've created an arrangement in Logic with two multi timbral / multi-output instruments (Kontakt and Stylus RMX - both up to date versions) with aux outputs for all of the instruments channels; 16 in the case of Kontakt, 8 in the case of RMX.
I'll work with this setup and after a while I find that whenever I play and then press stop, a tiny portion of audio will repeat rapidly, over and over again in the 'master' left output channel at +6.0dB - it also shows up on all the instrument auxes at a much lower level. It's as if Aphex Twin has invaded my Mac... Weirdly, this problem crops up even if I'm not outputting anything from the multi-instruments - it's enough that say, an EXS instrument, plays something, I'll press stop, and then the glitch signal will appear in all the level meters of the multi instruments and master output, but not on the EXS level meter. If I press play again, the glitch disappears and audio playback is perfect - it only happens when stop is pressed. And no sign of it if there's a silent part in the arrangement with no tracks playing anything.
If I have any instances of reverb on bus channels, that audio will will also feed into the left channel of those busses, even when there are no channel strips sending to them. Weird as ****, and driving me up the wall with frustration.
I've omitted it being down to my audio interface (Metric Halo 2882) as the problem persists if I switch to the Mac internal I/O.
I'm trying to work through this at the mo as I've got a deadline for 2pm this afternoon - but I'm worried I might not make it due to throwing my feckin computer out the window. Please help - thanks!

If your deadline wasn't looming, I'd say buss everything to a stereo track and record this stuff. It sounds great, you could use it in another project later...
But to your problem: The only quick solution I can think of for you to try is to create a brand new fresh project and use the selective track import feature to bring your tracks into the new project. Don't start from an old template (that you may still be using since Logic 8 or something) because this could indeed be the root of the problem. Build a new template from Logic 9.1.1, then make a new project from that and import all your tracks. If it's your project that's corrupted somehow, this could be the trick to solve it, and it won't take too long to try, so it's worth a shot.
I'm not sure of this, but something is telling me I've seen this problem before, and if so it was on Leopard (not Snow Leopard) on a MacPro in the studio. Have never had it on my personal MBP (which was only ever Tiger and then Snow Leopard - I skipped Leopard on purpose because the studio machines seemed so very dicey). Also, I don't use RMX on my own machine but in the studio, yes. Same deal for multiple output instruments, I rarely do that either. On that point, another thing you could try is to forget about multiple outs for now, and just work with stereo instances. Yes I realize this will mess up your entire painstakingly built-up mix.. but if this is causing the flakiness you may have no choice but to go back to stereo instances, finish your writing, then do the whole mute/solo thing to bounce your individual parts to audio and proceed from there. In this scenario, selective track import will be a timesaver too because once you've done all the bouncing, you can just create a new project and import all of your channel strips and so on, to then re-assign the individually bounced tracks to the assignments you had before. Will be quicker to recreate your mix than having to do it from scratch. Or you might not even need to do this step because if eliminating the multi-out instruments makes the prob go away, then you can just recreate your assignments within the same project using the bounced audio tracks.
    Get to it.
Once you've delivered.. I'd open that project again and record all of that lovely Aphex Twin messiness for later use.

  • Combining FCE Project Files Contents

I started a wedding project on my external hard drive (importing footage via imovie as I can't import direct to FCE, probably due to slippage on the camera - not sure that's relevant though). The pins on the power cable snapped. While waiting for a replacement cable (ages!) I carried on the project on my imac hard drive. My external drive is now back in action, so I would like to now combine what I have on the wedding project on my imac, with what I started on my external drive - and carry on from there as I still have some footage to import and edit.
I think I am ok moving the media clips across (which I have on the imac desk top) to the capture scratch on the external drive. My question is around what to do about the project file on the imac. Can I somehow combine that with the original project file on the external hard drive?
Or am I trying to approach this the wrong way?

Thanks very much for this Ian. I am quite new to FCE, so just to check my understanding - unlike imovie, FCE projects have a media file (containing the movie clips) and a separate project file containing all the references to how the clips have been edited etc?
If I just copy over the timeline of the continued project on my imac over to the original project on the external hard drive, does that mean the clips and the reference info will all be copied over and will automatically then live in the original media and project files respectively?
And even more basic - to copy over, do I just click into the timeline, go Edit, Select All (which will pick up video and audio tracks) and then Edit, Copy - and then paste into the timeline of the original project?
Apologies if this is all rather lame!

  • Audio glitches every 11 min. 42 sec. in iDVD 6

i burned a slideshow in iDVD and added music but every 11 minutes 42 sec. it goes to a new "title" and the audio glitches right there. What am I doing to create this "title"......I'm very new at this and am sure its something I must have to turn off....?????

Check to see if the problem is happening at the 99th slide. iDVD slideshows can hang up there. If so, reduce to 98.
I make my slideshows in iPhoto instead of iDVD, then File/Export to my desktop and drag the resulting Quicktime movie into the edge of the iDVD project's main window. You won't have the glitch at No. 99, if that's the problem.

  • Too much compression on FCE project

I have a FCE project that is 14.4 min long and 3.81 GB. When I us DVDSP to create the menu and DVD it ends up as a 995 MB DVD. Compared to the original FCE project, it looks really grainy. I upped the encoding as high as it would go, but I can't get it larger than 995 MB. Since it is the only movie on the DVD is there anyway to get DVDSP to not compress at all?

DVD footage is most often compressed to MPEG2, but the bitrate can vary widely up to 9.8Mbps if you use a replicated disc. Additionally, you can also use MPEG1 on a SD disc, which is not as high a quality, but can allow you to fit vastly more minutes of video on the same size disc.
If you are burning a DVD on your mac then anecdotal evidence suggests that a video bitrate of no more than 7.4Mbps is prudent. More than this and the disc may 'choke' in some players.
This isn't necessarily to do with the laser, so much as the reflective properties of the re-writable disc not being as good as a replicated one. All DVD players should be able to cope with 9.8Mbps from a DVD-Video disc (although sadly not all do, surprisingly), but keep in mind that a DVD-R is not a DVD-Video disc.
If your pristine footage is coming out as grainy when you encode then you really ought to check the settings that you are using. Is the source footage and lighting good quality for the footage? Have you applied any filters or effects? Are you using a good quality encoder?
The final size of the file produced will vary according to the encoding used. The higher the bit rate the larger the file size will be. Audio files add to the overall bit rate on a disc, to, so using AC3 (Dolby Digital) is a very good idea - they have a smaller file size, lower bitrate and can allow you to increase the rate for your video to gain quality.
Be aware that the visual difference between footage encoded at around 7.4Mbps, compared to that encoded at 8 or even 9Mbps is so slight that most people won't notice. There appears to be a law of diminishing returns in operation - you really don't gain anything by encoding at much higher levels, but you will prevent some players playing your disc back reliably.
If you've not yet used Compressor then you really ought to be looking at it. If your results are coming from Compressor, then it is about time you looked at BitVice and if necessary used the DVNC setting there to reduce the noise on the final output. There are other encoders, but none so easy to use as Bitvice, IMO.

  • Archiving a FCE project

I know that in iMovie I can easily archive Events by going into iMovie, finding the external drive and dragging events from the internal hardd rive folder into the external drive folder. Is there an equivalent in FCE?
I have about 35GB of elements (video clips, music, etc.) that FCE knows where to find on my internal hard drive. I'd like to store these on an external drive. How can I move them to the external drive so that FCE knows where they are? Or do I just move them off, and then if I ever need to use them again, move them back onto the internal drive?
Thanks in advance for whatever advice you can offer.

    Hello Roger,
To archive an FCE project you need to keep the _FCE project file_ and any _source media_ that you used (video clips, stills, audio files, etc).
    Normally,
FCE project files are in the +Final Cut Express Documents+ folder
Video clips are in the +Final Cut Express Documents/Capture Scratch+ folder
Other media (stills, audio) will be where ever you saved them on your hard drive.
For project archiving, I usually copy all these files to a single folder having a logical name that identifies the project.

  • Externally imported audio - synchronisation in FCE HD

Greetings all.  I have two G4 Powerbooks with FCE HD 3.0.  I record videos on a mini-DV camera and audio externally in Logic (musical performances) and import the audio from Logic and want to sync it up with the waveform from the camera audio.  Because making Quicktime Movies for utube is a long process I like to set one machine at this while continuing to work on the other.  However while on my main machine there is no noticeable synchronisation issue, on the second machine longer takes eg a couple of minutes start to be problematically out of sync by the end.
I normally record in Logic at 44.1 KHz and assuming this to be to do with FCE wanting a sample rate of 48K I just bounced down a couple of samples at 48 and tried those but playing back in the timeline at least there is still the sync problem, so I suppose it will still be there when I make the .mov file.
So is there something about the settings on the second machine that are different and are causing this problem please?  I have of course looked and not found anything that seems to apply.  How should I have things set so that I can get proper synchronisation?
    Many thanks
    Stephen

Ah thanks, hadn't looked in the Sequence.  There it says Aud Rate 48, Aud Format 32-bit floating point.  The camera's audio is 48K and 16 bit, the imported audio, with which it does not sync after a while, is now also 48 and 16.  The camera audio data rate is given as 6.9MB/sec and the imported as 187.5K/sec.  The camera's audio, for removal of doubt, is perfectly in sync with the video.
I looked in a FCE project made on the other Powerbook, with some long takes, and the settings are all the same except that the imported audio is still at 44K.
I might add that the convenience of using this other PB is not simply a time saving issue, its an old one I feel comfortable taking places and working on things when I'm away, whereas the main PB is plugged into all sorts of things and I'd rather keep it here.  Not least, that's why its still working perfectly 7 years later...

  • Importing multiple audio tracks from FCE HD

On page 22 of the FCE HD manual it says of importing Quicktime movies "...new audio tracks are added below the video track for EACH audio track in the movie". This does not seem to be the case when I import movies exported for Soundtrack. Is the manual wrong, or is it me?
Sorry if this is a FAQ, I've tried a lot of searches and I can't find anything.
G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   832 MB Ram, ATI Radeon 7000, Mercury Elite 1 Ghz

Ok - I'm back again. I've been fooling around a bit with this and this is what I have come up with. ST only allows 1 track in at a time. Multitracks of audio from FCE are flattened down which makes it impossible to tweak them individually in ST. I turned the link button off in FCE and exported the audio tracks one at a time. Each track you bring into ST has to be opened in a new ST project file. Then you can tweak them and export them out of ST, and bring them back into FCE.
My opinion however is that ST is such a weak and watered down verion of STP that it is actually better and more time efficient to use the audio tools in FCE to fix your audio problems and do your mix. Sure, if you have STP its a great program - but ST has none of the power tools that its big rother STP has. You are much better using FCE.

  • FS700 AVCHD Audio Glitch

    Hi All,
We are working with two iMac's via a Lacie 5 Big Network Harddrive. We are using the most up to date version of Premiere CC 2014.
We swap projects from machine to machine on a daily basis depending on what editor is assigned to the project.
We have found a few times that when we are editing with FS700 everything seems fine on import then when we switch machines or open a project up a few days later, audio glitches appear and cannot be fixed! The only way I can describe it, is that the audio loops a 1-2 second chunk for the entire clip. The waveform shows this too. We have tried to take the files offline then reconnect but that didn't work, even tried re-importing but the same issue occurs.
I have read that a few people have also had this issue with AVCHD footage. I did read that Adobe fixed this problem but it is still happening on our systems.
Does anyone know a fix or can Adobe confirm if the next update will fix this?
    Thanks
    John

    Hi John,
Were the media files ingested correctly? Was the entire contents of the SD card copied to the hard drive and then ingested via the Media Browser? If you did not ingest in this manner, you can have problems with audio.

  • Deleting Audio Segments in FCE

I am looking to delete a few ahhhhhs and ummmmmmms in a recent FCE project.
This is pretty easy to do in something like Audacity where you just highlight part of the waveform you want removed and delete it.
How do I do this in FCE? It seems like basic audio editing but perhaps I am missing something.
    Thanks!
    Doug

    Hi Doug,
    No problem. Here goes:
*1. Open the audio clip into the viewer by double-clicking it from the timeline.*
*2. Zoom in until you can comfortably see the first portion of the audio waveform that you would like to delete.*
*3. You will notice the pink line across the waveform. This shows the level of the audio as time goes on. What we want to do here is to reduce the level to zero for the short period you want to remove, then bring it back up to full afterward. And to make this short adjustment, we need to keyframe the audio line.*
*4. To keyframe the line, click P to select the Pen tool.*
*5. With the Pen tool selected, click once on the pink line over the part where you would like the audio fade-out to begin.*
*6. Now, click once on the pink line where you would like the fade-out to end (the beginning of the "ahh" or "umm") and drag the line down to the bottom.*
*7. Now do this in reverse order for the end of the part you want to remove. Click once to make a keyframe at the end of the "ahh"*
*8. Click once more a tiny bit to the right, and drag upward so that the keyframe returns the pink line to its normal level.*
The final result in the viewer should look something like this:

If any part of the process was unclear, feel free to ask any follow-ups.
    Hope this helped,
