Audio in log & capture

I don't have a search bar either, so I have to ask - I have FCP studio. How can I get audio during log & capture?
Thanx

The way most people [editing DV] would do it is to connect an external TV monitor and speakers to their DV device's analog outputs.

  • Video & Audio Files Logged & Captured Independently. Why?

    Hello All,
I've been working with a Panasonic DVX 100B for some time now. I've had nothing but success in shooting footage, and transferring it to my computer using the Log & Capture function. On my latest attempt something has happened that I can't figure out. The video and audio are captured, but they are not linked. In other words, I can find the video file in my Capture Scratch / Project Folder, but when I import it into my project, there is no audio accompanying it. I can however find the audio file in the Audio Capture Scratch, and import that. When placed at the same playhead location on the timeline, they are perfectly in sync. This is nice, but it makes editing an unnecessary struggle.
I tried logging and capturing twice, to see if it was just a glitch. The same thing occurred.
Did I bump something inadvertently? What's happening? Finally, is there a way to permanently connect the audio and video now, or do I need to log and capture again (3rd time being a charm)?
    Thanks.
    DG

You changed the capture scratch disk setting.
    • Uncheck "capture audio and video to separate files".
To link the audio and video
    • Once the audio and video are in the timeline and aligned, select them then: Modify>Link (⌘+L)

  • No Audio during Log and Capture

Hello, I have FCP 6.0 and am unable to hear my audio during log and capture. I have this problem on all 5 G5 Macs that I have, and have tried different editing docks and cables. I have used FCP for more than 5 years and have never had this problem. iMovie has audio during capture, so I am convinced that there is a pre-set in FCP that I don't have checked properly, but I've been over them many times and still have no answer. I searched past forums and didn't really find anything helpful to me.
My pre-sets are set to DV NTSC 48kHz and the playback pre-sets are set to default. I can hear audio of my clips after I log and capture, but I still need to hear audio during importing. I'm more confused than anything. If anybody has had this problem before or any suggestions for me, I'm all ears.
    Thanks.
    John

    ... as Bogie says.
However... this is a non-feature that dates back to slower CPU days... yet, still with all the different formats and such I (ME!!) I believe it's still good practice to leave it off.
Devoting as much CPU work to the capture process lessens the chance for something to go wrong. You can easily monitor the audio directly out of the deck as needed.
Sure -- octo cores need 30 apps open just to get your money's worth and I'm sure you won't have any issues using an 8th of one to send audio thru itself while the other 7 and 7/8ths are used for capture... but who wants to risk it?
Not me... I'm to old to change my ways.

  • No audio after using capture now to log files

I'm trying to import some footage into final cut pro but having trouble getting the audio to work. I'm using my camera as a deck and I can hear the sound coming from the camera, I can also hear it when I'm logging/capturing and when i'm using capture now. someone had suggested that I turn off the audio in the sequence and canvas. I'm not sure how to turn it off in the canvas but i tried turning it off in the sequence and I still don't get audio after I capture the clips. Any ideas/suggestions?
    thanks

Was the source audio button checked to on in the Log & Capture > Clip Settings window?

  • Log & Capture -- audio out of sync

We are editing a feature doc...we logged & captured a few tapes. We are not certain of the fps rate that the DV was shot. We are told it is 24p. We are working off of dubs...if that makes a differnce???
When we do a advanced pulldown the audio is really out of sync. When we capture at 29.97fps, it is also out of sync. We are baffled. Below is the warning that we get when we batch capture and the capturing is completed:
<<The audio sample rate of one or more of your captured media files does
not match the sample rate on your source tape. This may cause the
video and audio of these media files to be out of sync. Make sure the
audio sample rate of your capture preset matches the sample rate of
    your tape.>>
We would love to edit this in 29.97fps to be able to view off our monitor.
Are there any suggestions to troubleshoot?
We are proceeding to log, but not capture. Is this wise? Or should we find out what is wrong first?
    Thanks, joeyngloria

I'm delighted--in a sick way--to see this topic being posted today, since I'm having a very similar problem:
While capturing HD footage shot with, and captured from, a Sony HDR-FX1, I noticed that the A/V were out of sync by a solid second, maybe longer (FCP 5.1.4). The problem is there from the start of each of two tapes, and it's there throughout. Both tapes are 1 hour of continuous film with no cuts (they were interviews).
There's no sync problem when the footage is viewed on the camera's LCD, and it doesn't matter if I capture to my external drive (Maxtor, 500 gig, FW 800, empty) or to my iMac (1.6 Ghz) hard drive (something I did as an experiment to test whether there was something going on with the external drive).
Captured clips played in the viewer faithfully reproduce the out of sync A/V.
    Appreciate your help.

  • Audio Monitoring during Log & Capture

New user here and just setting things up. I'm able to hear audio after I have captured a clip but cannot hear/monitor audio during logging. What am I missing here? BTW - using onboard iMac speakers and headphone jack for monitoring.

I have the same problem and its driving me crazy! I don't think it is supposed to work this way, especially if you have 8 cores worth of processing power. More than enough to view and listen during capture and log review process.
    Here is my situation:
    Camera: Sony HC7
    Connection: Firewire
Video Setting on Camera: HDV 1080i60 with 16 bit 48hz Audio
Program: Final Cut Studio Pro 2
During Log and Capture Preview (HDV settings) there is not an option to turn audio on although you can view the sound bars moving just fine. I have not been able to find any documentation that say FCP does not allow you to listen to audio during preview. I think this is a bug or at least an option that FCP should allow the user to turn-on or turn off.
My question is this: Should it be working? And if so, why not? And if its not allowed then Why Doesn't the documentation say so????? I've noticed that if you're capturing from standard DV devices that you elect to turn the audio on/off.
Like this post, if I capture it into the application then everything works just fine and the audio is there.
    Please help. Thanks

  • Connecting Log & Capture to an External Display

    Forum,
I am using FCP for my current project. While logging footage from my camera I thought it would be easier if I could hook up the Preview area of the Log & Capture window to an external device such as a display. Is this possible?
How do I achieve this? What kind of an adaptor is needed?
    Thanks.

    #8 External Monitor Viewing.
    Shane's Stock Answer #8:
A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

  • Is it possible to delete the audio of a captured clip permanently?

I know you can drag clips to the timeline without audio, or delete the audio from the timeline.
What I'm asking is: say you captured a bunch of clips with audio tracks that you didn't want, because you forgot to uncheck the audio box.
Is there some way you can delete the audio from the captured clips, without re-capturing everything? I'd like to have them sitting in my browser, without any associated audio.
I know you can change whether audio is present in a logged (but uncaptured clip) using clip settings, but that only works before the clip is captured.

Just think about this for a minute before you launch
yourself off into this realm. The audio doesn't
really take that much space. DV video runs at 3.6
MB/sec 48khz audio runs at 192kB/s. The audio takes
    up nothing.
You're right - it's not worth the effort. It's just a minor annoyance. It would be easier to just recapture all the clips.

  • Adjusting audio gain on capture?

I'm capturing some material from a DVD through my AJA Io (no, I'm not pirating it) and the audio levels coming from the DVD player are too low for my inputs. I used to use the Mac's built in audio in these circumstances, or when using the voiceover tool, so that I could boost the gain in the clip settings tab in L&C. However, my audio gain slider is now grayed out no matter how I configure my inputs or A/V settings.
If I go to the Sound preference pane, I can boost the gain, but as soon as I open log & capture, the level in the preference pane goes back to zero.
Anyone know of any combination of settings that will allow me to adjust the gain for my clip settings?

Some DVD players have a volume control.
Probably your player has this feature, if so, it can give a help with the levels.

  • Log & Capture wont let me transfer video

I recorded a few videos with my digital camcorder and I'm trying to transfer them to my computer. I go to Log & Capture and I see the 3 videos listed. For some reason, I cant transfer the video for 2 of them, only audio. The video and audio checkboxes are faded so I can't check the video checkbox. I also tried transfering with iMovie and it still doesn't work, which leads me to believe that it is a problem with the video.
    Help?

Oops, I actually meant to say Log & Transfer. That's what I actually used.
The problem that I'm having, I'm having it on my MacBook Pro. I just went to try and transfer on another computer (college computer lab, iMac) and now the transferring works perfectly... So I guess it's a problem with my computer...

  • Log & capture question

a small thing that i find kind of annoying ... log & capture works fine but i guess there's no way see the timecode (other than looking at the deck which sometimes isn't convenient) as you're capturing. when you begin capturing this "preview" window or whatever pops and says you're capturing but the log & capture tool/deck controller is now in the background and the code in the timecode is no longer active. imho it would nice and even useful if the log & capture tool remained in the foreground and active as it does in avid ...

Attach a video monitor to the deck and enable the time code overlay display on the deck.
Attach a pair of audio monitors and you have the complete package - audio/video/tc.

  • The log & capture window has become disabled...can control cam, but no vid.

I have been capturing 24p footage from the DVX100a and the log & capture feature has been working fine, until after the print to video feature was used. Now the device control works, but it will only display color bars. I have checked and rechecked the audio/video settings, as well as user preferences. Am I missing something simple?

    ? Am I missing something simple? < </div>
Probably but it's impossible to tell from here. Search the forum for your camera model and for preview disabled. We get at least one post a day on these topics. I don't follow the threads, I just see them all the time.
Try shutting down your system, disconnect the FW stuff, restart. Usually resets the FW bus. But there are many cameras out there now that tend to drop in and out of the preview window.

  • Multibridge Pro no audio monitoring during capture

I cannot get audio monitoring during capture, from betacam (component) or dv, I tried everything I can think of, does anybody else is running to the same problem?
(running mac pro, plenty of ram, Os version 10.5.2, decklink software 6.6.2, FCP 6.0.2)
    Thanks for any suggestions.

I tried to reboot the multibridge many but to no avail. Regarding the monitoring, I do not really care about monitoring the upload, but I want to be able to log the clip via final cut, and it should work, however it does not.
Also I wanted to know if users of the multibridge have issues with the video levels? I just switch from a HD Decklink card and the difference in level is not right, the multibridge is much to bright. Any suggestions?

  • No audio while logging

I'm using the latest version of FCP. When I am in the log and capture mode I can't hear the audio. The meters are moving so I know the signal is coming through. After I capture the clip and put it in the time line the audio palys fine. I have tried this in different sequence and other projects with the same results. Any ideas on how to fix this?

    Hi:
The Audio preview is off by default in the log & capture settings. You can turn it on if you want. Search for the Monitoring Video and Audio While Logging topic in the FCP User Manual.
When you say latest version of FCP you mean FCP6?
    Hope that helps !

  • URGENT No audio when logging

I know there is a setting somewhere so I can hear audio when logging from my camera, but I can't find it! I have spent hours in the manual, online, searching help files and nothing!! Please help. I really need this info by tomorrow morning. I know there is some setting to click to allow me to hear my audio while logging.

I found the answer in another forum. Here is a link to the answer: http://www.geniusdv.com/weblog/archives/finalcut_pro_audio_videosettings.php
If you are using Final Cut Pro 4.5, there is a switch you need to turn on in order to hear audio in Final Cut Pro within the Capture Preset Editor. (This has since been fixed in Final Cut Pro 5.0 or higher).
Click on the link and follow the tutorial. Look for the the heading 'Turning on External Speaker while Capturing' It will show you how to adjust the capture preset editor.
