First of all there is a special doc DVD for Solaris 10 u4 (listed on the same page as installation DVD)
Second - "release notes" stuff is always located on docs.sun.com

  • Solaris Release Upgrade Path u3 to u8

    Hi,
I would like to upgrade Solaris Release from u3 to u8. In the same ref. I have below queries.
    Can I directly upgrade from u3 to u8 ?
Whether I need to upgrade first u3 to u6 and then u6 to u8.
    Please suggest.
    Thanks

  • Solaris releases supported?

I am working on an issue where we need to run old releases of Solaris 10 in order to test our application. We were led to believe that since the hypervisor abstracts that hardware from the OS that we could upgrade our hardware and still run an older OS. For example, we have a requirement to run Solaris 10 update 2. But the release notes for LDOMs 1.2 and 1.3 say that we have to run a minimum Solaris release and/or a minimum kernel patch level in order for our OS to be supported.
Can anyone clarify the rules for guest OSes? Does nayone successfully run unpatched old releases in LDOM guests?
    Thanks!

The release notes recommend (as oppose to require) a specific version so that all the features are enabled.
Running older versions of Solaris in the guest domains is supported (you just won't have all the features
enabled that are listed in that LDoms release).
However I'm afraid you're out of luck with the S10U2 requirement as that is not technically possible.
LDoms support went into S10U3 and any older OS version won't have the LDoms drivers.
Personally, I wouldn't bother with anything less than S10U4 in a guest domain.

  • Audio in solaris 10

I have via onboard sound (KM400/KN400) abit mobo and would like to know what the procedure is to add sound. I come from a freebsd background so recompiling a kernel isn't a problem... besides the error messagebox in gnome is starting to get on my nerves. Any help is cool. Thanks

    Hi,
I've noticed while trying out the Solaris 10 beta 72
that the audio playback quality took a major hit
since Solaris 9. I was hoping that this would go
away in the Solaris 10 release, but it's not the
    case.
If I try to play an .mp3 file with mpg123 or even
audioplay an .au file, there are regular clicks in
the playback, audible about twice per second.
Booting into Solaris 9, the audio playback is
    s perfect.
My intuition tells me that the integration of DTrace
into the kernel is the culprit, but of course, I have
no proof. Can anyone think of a way to test this
theory? You can be assured that DTrace is not the culprit. When DTrace is not running ("pgrep dtrace" to be sure), there is no effect on system performance.
    Maybe DTrace can be
used to figure out what's going on?DTrace could certainly be used, but some basic facts would be helpful. As Juergen asked, which audio driver is this and on what machine? And how idle is the machine when audio playback is running? Is the machine power managed?

  • Should Solaris release 2 be used? (6isolaris2.tar)

Solaris forms/reports release 2 contains forms 6.0.8.11.3 and reports 6.0.8.11.2. It is NOT a patch and contains later releases than 6i patch set one. Release 2 is also missing webDB. It also appears that the documentation has not been updated from the first release.
Note: For solaris 7 the documented required patches are definately not up to date.
Should I install release 2 at all? Would it be better to use the first release + patch set one?

  • Webdb included with Solaris release 2 install?

I have installed Forms Server 6i for Solaris before and the WebDb listener has always been installed as well. However, I just installed release 2 and none of the WebDb prompts showed during the install and WebDb was not installed. Is this no longer included?
If I try to download webdb for Solaris separately then only Portal 3 (at over 1GB in size) is available rather than webdb.

    Following up..
I can find the original 6isolaris.tar under reports but not forms. Downloading this first release I find the www21 directory on the install which is missing on release 2. Again, the first release doesn't even show on the technet download for forms, just reports.
I will install forms/reports with the first release and perhaps update with release 2.

  • End of support for old Solaris releases

I searched the web site, but I couldn't find when Sun will stop supporting older releases (i.e. Solaris 2.6).
Can anyone tell me how I can find out?

Another procedure that has worked well for me over the years.
    Go to Sun's web page.
    http://www,sun.com
In the top corner of the web page, there is a search area.
Put in keyword eosl (for "end of support life").
The search results will bring up most every topic related
to Sun's philosophies and policies on the subject. More than you'd ever choose to read.
As an example, there were more than 225 search results today.
    http://onesearch.sun.com/search/onesearch/index.jsp?qt=eosl&charset=UTF-8
Keyword eol (for "end of life") is also a valid search word,
but produces more than 1500 search results.

  • Audio problem solaris 10

Solaris 10 on a x86 with c-media on board sound device with OSS drivers, only xmms player play sound files.
java player refuse playing any sound file with a "can not open audio device" error. Gnome system sounds do not play. Also audio control tool only shows record settings without playback settings. After "soundon" command, system can play sound files through terminal with OSS play commands and with xmms player only. No other media player installed with solaris 10 can use the drivers.
(OSS readme mentions to add the "soundon" command on /etc/rc to load the drivers before gnome starts for system sounds to work, but without any details)
    Any suggestions..

Here is the list of changes and bugs I found in AR8.1.1 and ways to fix them (bugs of course :-) ):
(this is how I fixed these bugs, you may find better ways to fix them)
The most important fix since AR 7.0.9 is that now AR8 works with new Linux
distributions which use recent GTK 2.0 libraries. It is known fact that when
recent GTK 2.0 library was present loading of AR 7.0.9 failed with endless
loop of messages: "expr: syntax error" on console window and serious CPU
usage hit silently slowing down computer reactions. Now this is fixed.
New feature added: Now AR8 scans font pathes inside X config files and adds
found fonts to its own internal font cache so system wide fonts are used for
pdf pages rendering in addition to default built-in AR8 package fonts. If
user will copy font files from Windows/fonts directory to X font locations
the pdf files outlook in AR8 is identical to the one on Windows.
When someone uses tar.bz2 or tar.gz installer it will ask for installation
directory and will show default [ /opt] directory. Do not press enter here!
If you do this a ?[3~ junk directory will be created in current directory. To
overcome this manually type /opt or other location.
Another bug is blank grey window on first run of AR8. Just close it with X and
provide path to libgtkembedmoz folder. This library is a part of mozilla web
browser so it can be found in any mozilla program directory:
    /usr/lib/firefox
    /usr/lib/seamonkey
    /usr/lib/thunderbird
    /usr/lib/mozilla
or other locations where mozilla software is installed.
Just run AR8, go to Edit->Preferences->Categories->Internet->Select Browser,
and fill in libgtkembedmoz Folder path with one of these locations or find
    correct one for your system.
The last bug is AR8 only creates desktop icons on root account.
AR8 can be run without icon. Just run /usr/bin/acroread

  • Nexenta Solaris Release 5.11 problem with wrong magic number

I built an x86 server using nexenta. The box got powered down, and now it's freaking out about the /var filesystem.
    Unable to repair /var filesystem.
    fsck -F ufs /dev/rdsk/c0d0s4
I run fsck -F ufs /dev/rdsk/c0d0s4 on it.
and get Bad Superblock at block 16: Number of directories out of range.
Look for Alternate Superblocks with mkfs
    Then I noticed I didn't use -y
use -y and it fails with Fsck was running in yes mode. If you wish to run in yes mode using the alternate superblock run
    fsck -y -o b=20350880 /dev/rdsk/c0d0s4
So then ran fsck via fsck -y -o -b=20350880 /dev/rdsk/c0d0s4
then I get Bad SuperBlock at 20350880: Magic number wrong.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks Mark

So then ran fsck via fsck -y -o -b=20350880 /dev/rdsk/c0d0s4how about:
    fsck -y -o -b=32 /dev/rdsk/c0d0s4
man newfs for the option to NOT create the filesystem but runs the command anyway and shows you the alternate boot blocks.

  • Older releases of Solaris?

    Hi
I need to get hold of solaris 10 u5 (which is dated 05/08) for X86, but when u try and download Solaris from the Sun website the only one that I can find is the latest version, solaris 10 u7 (which is dated 05/09).
You can get patches etc. for solaris 10 u5, but does anyone know where I can get the iso files for the solaris 10 u5 OS?
Any help would be mooocho appreciated.

You can download older release DVD images here:
    http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/releases.jsp
I just tried to download the u5 and it looks like its all there.

  • Upgrade from Solaris 11 Express to Solaris 11 Release (11/11); Guide MIA?

Would there be an easy way to upgrade from Solaris 11 Express to Solaris 11 Release (11/11)? The FAQ for Solaris 11 Release has the following hopeful text:
Can I upgrade to Oracle Solaris 11 from Oracle Solaris 11 Express or Oracle Solaris 11 Early Adopter?
Yes. Customers can upgrade to Oracle Solaris 11 by using the package management tools. Refer to the Oracle Solaris 11
Transition Guide (http://www.oracle.com/pls/topic/lookup?ctx=E23824&id=MF JAI) for more information
But that link comes up with an error page 404, "topic not found".
The one transition guide I can find is:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E23824_01/html/E21799/index.html
But that covers Solaris 10 jumpstart, not Solaris 11 Express or Early Adopter.
    The Solaris 11 documentation at:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/solaris11/documentation/index.html
Also seems to mention only Solaris 10, not 11 Express or Early Adopter.
I have already downloaded the full repo for Solaris 11 Release, and the live installer, but I'm hoping it's something as simple as pointing the ips manager to a new repository, or just loading the full repo I already have as a local source. I would also like to keep the dtrace and sun studio set up I have now in the Express version, without reinstalling them on a new release version on bare metal.
If it keeps the features of the express version while ironing out a few kinks (gdm authentication bug, etc.), that would rock.
    Many Thanks,
    Gordon

Alan, Thank You, that worked with no problem at all. 11 Express was already using the correct repository, and only required a pkg command update, then other updates.
    So here's what I'm guessing:
    1. The Oracle Solaris maintained repository for Express and Early Adopter are now the same as Release, but they do require an updated pkg executable and pkg update command.
    2. The second form of the command mentioned in the update guide:
    # pkg set-publisher -g http://pkg.oracle.com/solaris/release
    -G http://internal.co.com/solaris solaris
is for using a local copy of the repository within our lan or vpn wan.
    3. Updates should be fairly regular now that Solaris 11 is in release version.
I think the new hash (SHA 256) fried some of our old gdm settings for our users, so we're creating new user accounts, and migrating the older accounts. We don't have too many, so it's not a problem for us. But that brings up another point:
    4. The graphical user manager in Express is now gone, and user and group management are now done with command line interface.
That's fine with me as well. I always use ssh to connect to the machine and then run the screen command for administration. The graphical user manager was always kludgy in Express, and I couldn't get it to work correctly anyway.
This is great stuff so far. Well done.

  • Solaris 11 IPS:  How do you post multiple versions of the same package?

How do you post multiple versions of the same software package on a single IPS instance(port)? Oracle was able to do it here with versions 151 and 175 of S11:
    http://pkg.oracle.com/solaris/release/
Unfortunately, based on my searches, no where in the documentation (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/solaris11/technologies/ips-323421.html) does it explain to the development community how this is done. The best I can do is create pkg repo instances on different ports to host each different software version.
We are trying to deploy an IPS repository for our drivers and utilities that our customers can link to and pull updates from. We have been able to post a software package to the repository using the command:
    pkgsend publish -s http://localhost:1234 -d ./ Appv1.p5m
This posts the package on the IPS repository instance at port 1234 on the server. However, we would like to post multiple versions of the package on the server at the same URL. Why the same URL? So that our customers and end-users need only point to a single URL to pull down our software rather than having to add a new URL to the publisher list each time we have an update. We want at least 5 of the previous software versions to be available on the server. Posting each version of the application or driver on a different IPS instance on a different port will require customers to add multiple URLs to their publisher list and they also will not be able to initiate remote scans for updates.
Has anybody been able to do this? Is any documentation forthcoming?
    Edited by: user13489824 on Jun 25, 2012 10:17 AM

dhduvall: Thanks for your response. Yes, one would think that as long as the version numbers are different, you should be able to accumulate multiple versions of a package in a repository. It looks like Oracle has done it in their S11 repository unfortunately, as far as I know, they have not shared the steps on how to do this. I would like to publish two versions of the same package. I.E. two different manifests with two different fmri.pkg version strings and two different binaries.
If I publish one package after another like this:
    pkgsend publish -s http://localhost:1234 Appv1.p5m
    pkgsend publish -s http://localhost:1234 Appv2.p5m
Then only the second package shows up in the repository, as if it over-wrote the first one.
Running pkgsend with two manifest, like this:
    pkgsend publish -s http://localhost:1234 Appv1.p5m Appv2.p5m
Will cause pkgsend to combine the packages and manifests as if they were a single package... not what I am trying to do.
Both approaches are complete without errors but neither achieves what I am trying to do.
alan.pae: Thank you. Unfortunately, the link didn't really help. I've read Oracle's white papers and IPS developer guide so I'm familiar with the topics covered.
Lex: Yes, I know. I specified the versions in the pkg.fmri value string.

You can find the report bellow. I am sure that my disk is OK and I am also using "CD-ROM" option in BIOS for installing solaris from my Solaris DVD.
I have also updated the drivers using "CPQary3-1.71-solaris10-i386".
    Please help me.
    Thanks,
    Qumar
