Audio Input Frustrations for simple voice recording.

I have been trying to make some simple podcasts using garage band, but have had difficulty with audio input. Internal microphone picks up a lot of the ambient noise in the room, and attempts at activating line-in audio have failed. I have gone to system preferences and changed the setting, under "sound">>"Input" to audio line-in port. I have plugged the jack in to the slot next to the headphone. The audio audio line-in input level registers nothing!
Is there a way for me to test the port, or is there some other setting that needs to be changed in order to get input other than from the internal microphone.

Hi there:
I'm not sure what other microphone options exist with that configuration,
but some users of Macs have gotten a USB device called the iMic from
Griffin Technologies and that allows in and out audio, including stereo.
Good luck in this matter, and happy computing!

  • Need Tutorial for Simple Voice Recording

I'm running for public office, and a local newspaper invited me to submit a statement along with a MP3 audio file. I asked a question on another forum about software that can be used to make MP3 files on a Leopard platform, and I was told to use GarageBand.
I viewed the video tutorial for Podcasts and also checked out another Apple tutorial, but they don't go very far. In contrast, GarageBand 3: Getting Started is overwhelming.
I would like to start by making a very simple audio - nothing more than a two-minute recording of my voice, with no overlaid music, no images, loops or other enhancements.
Can anyone list the steps I need to follow, from recording my speech to converting it to an MP3 file?
I've cliked the Male track, recorded my voice, stopped the recording (though probably incorrectly), then double-clicked on the file to play it back, but nothing happens.
    Thanks.

    It's very easy:
    • Create a "real instrument" track and select a voice preset or no effects at all.
    • Hit "record" to record your voice, hit the record button again or the stop button to stop recording.
    • Move the playhead to the appropriate position for playback.
    • If you like your recording, select "Share to iTunes" from the menu and select compression with MP3.

  • Simple voice recorder/save for curve 8320?

Can anyone recommend a simple voice recorder for the curve 8320 where I can record voice notes and save them directly to my phone instead of emailing/mms'n them using the built in send voice note feature on the phone?  I have tried using handango and their software sucks, stuff doesn't work and I tried the vr+ voice recorder program they have and don't like it, I just want something simple.
    Does it exist?

soon, a Handheld OS version 4.5 will be available for your carrier (if you're at AT&T it already is). Inside it there will be a video mode : you'll be able to take pictures like today, and also 3GP videos.
If you want, you can install it from AT&T and delete the vendor.xml file on your PC before launching the Desktop Manager to upload the OS on your Blackberry.
Apart from that, I can't install applications on my Blackberry so I lag a bit about available wonders other people can install on their Curve.

  • 10.4.10 Update kills most USB audio input devices for iChatAV

I have a Logitech Quickcam 5000 Pro that has a built in Mic. The UVC compliant camera still works, but under 10.4.9 the mic worked also; however, it no no longer shows up as an audio input device.
Intel Mac Mini 2GB RAM / MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Add another to the pile, slightly different: No audio support for my FIREWIRE based audio interface.
    Running 10.4.10, software update installed.
OSX recognizes it, at any sample rate I want to use it at.
Sound setup, everything else (my whole entire studio) recognizes it.
iChat AV, when I go to the video tab to select "microphone" will give me default of none and then my device name (mLAN audio network). As soon as I select my device, the microphone option disappears completely. The only way to get the selection option back is to restart iChat, upon which the problem repeats itself.

  • Simple voice recording into itunes

How can I record my own speech using itunes please? or point me to a previous thread?
Can anyone suggest a not so expensive microphone which can reduce background noise? I see the ones in the mac store. Are they any good?
    Thanks
    Gordon

This link is specifically about creating a podcast, but it talks about voice recording in GarageBand. Check out this link:

And if you have iLife, you should have GarageBand.

  • How do I make a simple voice recording that can be attached to an email?

I want to record a short message, mp3 or any format is fine, and attach it to an email. I've tried opening Garage Band to do it, and downloaded Audacity, but I have no idea how to use either one. I have a microphone that plugs into the audio port, and know how to switch to "use audio port for sound input" in preferences. But I want a simple command that says "start recording" instead of the complicated control panels I see in the two programs I've looked at.

    dianefromeliot wrote:
Thanks for the software suggestion - http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Audio/Audio-Recorder.shtml - it looks good. Why do you use it instead of Garage Band?
Had it before GB existed; I use other audio software for other tasks, but this one is probably the most easy to use app (of any kind) I've ever used. Click, speak, click, click. Done, with file sitting on my desktop.

  • How can I make a simple voice recording with no instrumentals?

I just want to record a song or two, save them individually and then burn to a cd.  I don't need all of Garageband whistles and bells.  I'm intimidated at the new 'event/project' start menu.  I don't want to select a key or timing.  I just want to sing the song using the mic on my iMac. This is not going to be posted for the general public and I don't want or need fancy.  Suggestions? Guidance?
I mistakenly posted this first to the podcasts site.

    Ann Shore wrote:

there's nothing to fear there, pick "Acoustic Instrument" for a simple "no bells" recording track

    then don't.
if you don't intend to use any of GB's tools, then the key and tempo don't matter

A couple of places for you to visit: Blackberry 101     Tips & Tricks
Sounds like you need to reload the OS on your device.
Get a good backup of your device: BB device backup (I keep all my backups in a separate folder created for that purpose so they are always in one place and easy to find.)
    2. Download the most recent version of device software for your carrier: Downloading BB device software
    3. Reinstall the device software: Clean reload of device software
    4. Pull the battery out with the device ON. Wait about a minute and put the battery back in. Let the BB completely restart.
    5. Once you have the device OS successfully installed you will then need to reinstall any 3rd party apps you currently have on your device: Install applications using the app loader tool
    6. Complete another battery pull routine after each 3rd party app installation to reclaim memory and refresh your BB.
Let us know how your are doing and if you have any questions/issues; search in the forum for your BB model (search box at top right of page) Can't find what you're looking for? Start your own thread. Other users will be there to help.

  • Recommend inexpensive audio A/D for Windows7, live recording?

I'm new to recording, new to Audition.   I'd like to record the stereo "Tape Output" of a powered mixer (a Peavey XR 1212) on my laptop.   Can anyone recommend A/D hardware that will work well with Audition and connect to a USB 2.0 laptop port?   The laptop is running 64 bit Windows7 and has a big SSD.  Ideally something that's not too expensive?
    Thanks,
    - Hans

I have personally worked with 4 different devices with Windows 7. These are all older models, mainly bought secondhand or donated for testing. They all have different connectors, all have their own personalities and all are OK. I would always try to get a usb2.0 device that has a metal casing. USB 1.1 devices will work, but may need the ATI usb filter driver with AMD/ATI based laptops and are not full duplex at high (eg 96k sample rates).
My M-Audio FastTrack usb is cheap and cheerful. The Mk1 that I have has no phantom power for mics and is in a plastic box. It appears more prone to noise from hums and from RF from the laptop wifi.
My Edirol has a weird combination of sockets, but works well. The most obvious feature is that it has switches for sample rate and asio versus MME drivers. There's a thread here about sample rate interaction with Audition. I like the Edirol.
I also like the Tascams, US122L and US144, for the ergonomics of the controls. They also have balanced line in, which might be relevant when connecting to a mixer. Interestingly, although they use the same drivers, they exhibited different problems that had to be addressed when used with the same laptop.
There is some interaction between the M-Audio and Tascam drivers, so if the laptop is used with different interfaces at different times there may be some quirkiness. Unimportant, but nevertheless there.
I think it all depends on the connectors and connection types you need, and whether you want the positive control of switches or not.
Windows 7 is very complicated when you get into the details of its audio workings, and laptops don't always enable full bios access to help with interrupt problems. Once you settle on a non-shared usb port on the machine, and set the interfaces up well, all these work OK.
I know this doesn't answer the question, but hopefully, it shows what to look for.

  • Audio/Voice Recorder for iPod [video] classic 160 GB Silver 6th Generation?

Hi, I'm looking for a voice recorder for my iPod, but I'm not sure which ones are compatible with my version, and which one is best.
i.e. Belkin TuneTalk, Griffin iTalk, etc. (I don't know which one is compatible, and then which one is best.)
This is the iPod I have:
Apple iPod classic 160 GB Silver (6th Generation)
    http://www.amazon.com/Apple-iPod-classic-Silver-Generation/dp/B000JO7RVC
I've been doing research on the matter, but due to conflicting reports, I am left in ultimate confusion.
So I thought it would be best to ask the experts.
    Thanks!

    tunetalk & classic: No way.
I am having endless trouble with Belikin Tunetalk stereo & IPOD classics.
I've asked Belkin & Apple & had nothing useful.
background: Been using Belkin tunetalk stereos (2) with 2 Ipod 5G (video) for more than a year. They work ok: [given the well know issues of harddrive noise picked up with internal microphones.]
Two modes available: "low" 22050 MONO & "high" 44100 Stereo
Had a ipod die on me, so upgraded to classics.
Recorded away, got nothing but 44100 MONO. Not supposed to be able to do this mode. & since I was recording TWO channels, I lost data. Belkin site says for classics only with the lastest software".
I've reflashed the ipods multiple times I one ipod records only mono (BLACK), the other (SILVER) records about 1 in 10 mono. Of course you can't tell till you're done whether you're going to get mono or stereo!
As iDude80n said about asking experts? Any one know if I go buy TWO MORE ipods, eg nanos, will these things actually work? Will post as separate question.

  • Audio input for guitar

    Hello,
The intro video says that I need to connect my guitar to an audio input. For now I'm just interested in using the Macbook for producing songs with my electric guitar. What devices do I need? What if I want to play the electric bass (instead of the electric guitar)?
    Thanks!

it depends what kind of quality you're expecting. you could try just plugging the guitar straight in:

anyone looking for a high quality recording would want a digital interface:

  • Can I make a simple voltage recording when SCB-68 is configured for Cold Junction Compensation?

    Hi everyone,
I am using a 6221 PCI card and SCB-68 connection module. I have set the SCB-68 module switches so that the 5 thermocouples I have connected between AI1 and AI5 are using the Cold Junction Compensation of AI0. Everything works fine.
Could someone tell me if the differential inputs left AI6 and AI7 can be used for recording another kind of sensor (nothing to do with a thermocouple) ? I suppose I just need to set those 2 inputs to a simple voltage recording function? The previous switches settings enable to do this simple recording ?
    Thanks,
    User
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Bruce,
Thanks for your answer and your advice. So I will use my free channels for other sensors.
Concerning your other remarks , I have planned setting the DAQ assitant at 100 samples and 1KHz for the thermocuples. Making an average of the 100 samples for each channel gives a good result from what I have seen in my last test. After this, with another DAQ assistant I am making some other kind of recording at another speed. I know this is not optimized using DAQ Assistant but loss of time and simultanity isn't a problem for me in this project.
However if I had used only one DAQ Assistant for my thermocouples and for the other sensors, a part from the rate vs thermocouples problem, not having the same ranges could have been a problem?
I also don't understand the channel order you mentioned. Still using a DAQ Assistant in what way would this effetc the measures?

  • Audio Input to iMac G5

    All,
I want to connect a MiniDisc player to my iMac. I have about 20 MiniDiscs of spoken word audio (personal recordings of conversations from when I was younger) that I want to copy to my computer. I have a portable MiniDisc player that has an output to a standard 2.5mm audio outlet or I could use my stereo which would be a 2 cable RCA connection.
My first question is can I connect an audio input device to any of the USB ports. Secondly, does anyone have any recommendations on how best to accomplish this.
Thanks, I look forward to any helpful responses.
    Message was edited by: H2OEngineer

Just use a 2.5mm minijack to 3.5mm minijack cable to your iMac, H2OEngineer. You can use Garageband, or just about any recent mac Audio software, to record the input. There are various freeware and shareware options.
For spoken voice recording there is no need at all to use a USB audio interface. The line in input on the iMac G5 is more than adequate. If you want to go one step better then iMac G5's also support digital "toslink" style optical input through the line in port. So do many minidisc players.
The downside is that you will have to do your recording in real time. Unfortunately Sony didn't see fit to allow fast digital downloads from the minidisc to Macs (as allowed by some minidisc players directly over USB to PC's). I guess Sony found iPods a bit too threatening to their previous near monopoly at the time.
    Cheers
