Audio Instrument Midi Channels

Hello, all. Can someone explain to me the pros and cons of having the MIDI channel for your audio instruments set to 1 as opposed to all All (or All as opposed to 1, for that matter)? I ask this because I was having some problems with a third party plug (Native Instruments' Reaktor 4); namely it was playing in one instrument track (1), but then when I would set up another track with another instance of the same plug, it wouldn't play at all on the new track. This was very odd because when I inserted a different plug on the second track, I WOULD hear the new plug. Anyway, to make a long story short, I noticed the MIDI channels of all my instruments were set to 1. I changed them to All, and everything is now working and I can hear all my instruments. However, I was (still am) wondering if I, perhaps, just detrimented myself in some manner I know not what by changing my intrument MIDI channels from 1 to All.
Any help on clearing this up would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much, one and all, for all the help and support.
Javier Calderon

Thank you very much for the response, Natural. I'm glad that as far as you know, midi channel 1 generally works well.
Interestingly enough, I actually have to manually set the midi channel to 1 (on all tracks other than inst 1, that is) because whenever I create an instrument, Logic seems to automatically assign the instrument to its corresponding midi channel - i.e. inst 1=midi 1, inst 2=midi 2, etc.
And what you said regarding some software instruments being sensetive to the midi channel you assign seems to be thoroughly correct. However, it seemed to be channel 1 that caused the bugaboo in my NI Reaktor plug. Setting the midi channels to All seemed to work well.
Thanks again.
Anyone else have any knowledge or advice to impart would be welcomed and appreciated.

I have recorded a regular guitar (regular audio)
I have recorded an audio instrument (midi hybrid plugs)
but the icons like grand piano ..which are midi ? I can't figure out how to get sound out or record. what am I doing wrong ? I don't see any rec. enable...and without going to the environment which i am still confused about..whats the easiest wasy to get using those midi instruments?

It's a 2nd cord which goes out of the MIDI interface into your synth-so you can sequence in Logic using your synth's sounds. If you just record and then playback to the synth it will sound just like what you played.
Mine has record buttons....try going to:
    View>Track Record Buttons
But they will record enable by default (when selected), usually. If you just hit record and hit notes on the keyboard it should record. MIDI data takes up hardly any data.

  • View more than one audio instrument midi window at same time Logic 7

    Hello,
Is it possible to open up more than one audio inst midi window at the same time?
It would save me so much time if I could view what is going on ie on the guitar & piano tracks on 2 separate tracks at the same time.
I know it is possible to double click on the grid of an audio inst midi window to view all midi in one song at the same time but because I have a lot of audio insts in my songs it gets really confusing. It would be ideal if I could pick and choose specifically which audio inst tracks are displayed within the same window when doing the double click thing or be able to view 2 tracks at once.
    Thanks in advance.

Are you refering on how to be able to view the Matrix Editor/Piano roll of 2 Audio instrument tracks in one window?

  • How to access audio instruments as midi channels from midi keyboard?

    Hi!
This is my first post here.
I use mostly Logic Pro 7 as a sound module with my keyboard. I have a song file in Logic that I made some time ago, where I've linked every audio instrument to a corresponding audio channel (same midi channel). All channels are in record mode, and thus every audio instrument is assigned a midi channel - and I can play different audio instruments by changing the midi channel on my midi keyboard.
Now, I want to create more tracks, so I can have more instruments to choose between. That doesn't work.. I try to make a new logic file and do the same thing with more channels, but I can't remeber how I made this work in the first place. I've been trying for hours and hours, and I'm going nuts here.
I would extremely grateful if anyone could tell me how this is done.
    (No rewire/extra software is necessary.)
    Thanks for reading.

    Welcome!
It's fairly straightforward. On each audio instrument, assign a MIDI channel in the parameter box - so eg Audio Instrument 1 is set to MIDI channel 1, Audio Instrument 2 is set to channel 2 etc.
The key part is in your song settings "File -> Song Settings -> Recording" to make sure "Auto demix by even channel" is ticked.
Now, shift-click on the record buttons for all your audio instruments, and when you send on MIDI channel 1, you'll play the first one, switching to channel 2 you'll play the second one, and so on.
The max you can do is 16 channels at once, afaik, as the sequencer input doesn't retain port info (which is a bit of a shortcoming in my book, but there you go...)

  • Multitimbral Instrument Plugins (ie 1 instument many midi channels)

I am using SampleTank and Kontakt and they way I use them just does not seem right ! The problem starts here..
    - when I add Kontakt to a Instrument Strip the Midi channel is assigned in the strip in the environment window.
    - If I create multiple tracks with the same Instrument and change the midi channel of a track they all change - Doh... not very logical.
The only work around to this that I have found is to create multiple instrument stips on env window and assign them all to the same instrument (ie instrument 1).... then give each a serperate midi channel - this creates lots of channels with the same audi meters bobbing up and down.
Sure I can use multiple instances of the same plugin (as with EXS24) but that is not very memory or processor effecient...
Now I know I can create Aux Channels and route channels to each - but you get in a "too many channels" mess !
So am I missing something is there an easy & logical way to put an instrument on a channel and route multiple midi tracks to it ?
Did I explain the problem clearly ? Any help/advice/guidance very welcome !
    Cheers
    Ian

    Hello !
You have to go in the environment page, instruments, and create a new multi instrument, which you will name Kontakt for instance. Activate all channels by ticking each check box in the instrument icon in the environment page. Then open another environment page where you will choose to see the Audio objects, I.E. the mixer in that case. Drag a cable from you newly created multi instrument to the channel strip containing your Kontakt sampler. You get then a message saying that the ports are in use, do you want to change the assignment, and you answer YES. Now in the arrangement page, set midi channel of Kontakt to All. Now you can create Midi tracks for each midi channel. Multiple outputs are either managed inside the sampler itself or using the Multiple Output version of the plugin, depending of which plugin model.
    Hope this helps

  • Millions of midi channels, only 4 audio channels

so when i'm in logic i can hold down on a channel, go to audio/ audio instrument and then select hundreds of different insert channels. great for midi
however there are only 4 audio channels to choose from! how can this be?
    thanks

    dear pp,
sorry...i couldn't resist. what's your interface and how many inputs does it have? if it's 4, then no more than 4 can be accessed at any given moment. if it has more than 4 then you haven't either set up enough audio tracks or assigned enough inputs (inputs 5+ per individual trks.) to the rest.

  • Multi Channel Audio Instrument [Kontakt 2]: Auxes not working?

    Hi,
I've searched the forums and come up with several posts about using multi-channel audio instruments, but none seems to exactly address the issue I'm seeing (and being confused by). I'm trying to set up Native Instruments' Kontact 2 sampler in multi-channel mode in Logic Pro 7. I perform the following steps:
    1. On an available audio instrument object, I click the input drop-down, select Multi Channel -> AU Instruments -> Native Instruments -> Kontakt 2.
    2. When Kontakt 2 opens, I load, say, three different instruments.
    3. In Kontakt 2's Outpus area, I create three outputs, labelled "st. 1", "st. 2", "st. 3". I cable these to "Plugin Output 1" and "Plugin Output 2" for st.1, "Plugin Output 3" and "Plugin Output 4" for st.2, "Plugin Output 5" and "Plugin Output 6" for st.3.
    4. In Kontakt 2, I assign the output of instrument 1 to st. 1, the output of instrument 2 to st. 2 and the output of instrument 3 to st. 3.
    5. Back in Logic Pro, I create two new (stereo) audio objects and assign them to channels Aux 1 and Aux 2 (and name them accordingly).
    6. In my Aux1 object, I select its input drop-down and choose Instrument1 -> Kontakt2 3 & 4.
    7. In my Aux2 object, I select its input drop-down and choose Instrument1 -> Kontakt2 5 & 6.
Okay, so basically I'm set up now, right? So to test this out, I set the MIDI receive channel of all of my instruments in Kontakt 2 to omni and click on the built-in keyboard in Kontakt 2. I can see the volume level indicators on all three instruments light up. I can also hear all three instruments coming out of my speakers. However, when I look at the environment page where I've created these objects, I find that they're all coming as a stereo sum from the original audio instrument object. The Aux1 and Aux2 objects are just sitting there doing nothing.
    What gives?
    Dual 1GHz PowerMac G4 (Quicksilver)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   MOTU 828

Okay, I found the solution to this, and it's odd enough that I figured that I'd post it just in case anyone else ran into it.
It turns out that the multi-channel thing does not work at all when you play Kontakt 2 from the built-in keyboard (in K2). Visually, K2 still shows all the audio going out on the corresponding channels, etc., but I guess it's summing it and outputting in stereo only when you do that. If you send it data from Logic, it works just fine. So I had this setup correctly all along.

  • NI products only sound midi channel 1 of instrument instance

Set it up right. Multichannel Instrument cabled to Audio Instrument in Environment. But only channel one responds in every sub-channel selected in the arrange window. Whew! This is driving me crazy. What am I doing wrong? Port=All. Name of midi channel changes as it should in the parameter window, but I can only hear midi channel one in any subchannel when triggered from keyboard. The only way I can hear the other instruments is to use the NI onscreen keyboard. Still all midi info plays back on midi channel one which is not the sound I want for everything.
What a work out: an exercise in futility. Any ideas?

After letting the problem rest a couple days, I returned to it and got the setup to
work.  I don't know for sure what I was doing wrong in the first place but here is
what I did differently that worked:
Before opening Audition, I opened keyrig.exe and set up the MIDI channels for the
instruments I wanted.  I then SAVED the instrument profile for the GM4 module in the
GM4 Patch folder under the Keyrig Data folder (I think the folder names are correct
but am doing this from memory).
Then I opened Audition, did what I needed to do to get the keyrig loaded to play on a
MIDI track.  I left the MIDI input on <All> and the output on <None> in the Sequencer.
I then clicked on Settings which brought up the keyrig.exe control panel.  Then on
the GM4 module I LOADED the profile I had made above.  Then, as I selected each
channel via the keyboard, I got the correct instrument and was able to record them. So
by "preloading" the instruments instead of trying to select them while in Audition,
    the setup worked.
Observations: Audition and the keyrig.exe software do not like each other.  If I had
the keyrig.exe software open (Settings) and accidentally clicked in a non-button area
of the interface, Audition crashed.  Once I loaded my profile as above, I could then
assign new instruments to different MIDI channels from within Audition but since it
was easy to crash Audition while keyrig.exe was open, I would try to avoid it.  Once
set up--it was a blast to goof around with the different sounds.

  • How Can I separate my MIDI Channels with layered instruments in MainStage 2 With my Axiom 61?

I have been at it for 3 days straight. I want to play an internal instrument (EVB3 for example) and trigger samples with the EXS24 without triggering notes from the other instrument. I have my keyboard set to MIy help meDI channel 1 and my drum pads set to MIDI channel 10. The still play together. I've tried changing MIDI input on both channel strips to multitimbral, Channel 1 for the keyboard and channel 10 for the drum pads. Still playing together. I've tried changing attributes in the Mapping screen. Still...
I don't think its the Axiom. I've tried changing MIDI CC numbers but then it won't talk to either instrument. I'm currently using MIDI cables into a 3rd generation M-Box. I've tried using USB as well. Please, somebody help me!!

Sorry for the late responce, I've been in program mode and haven't had a chance to come back to this.
I figured it out. It was an option that I had over looked in the Assignments & Mapping tab in Edit Mode. At the bottom of the window that says All Devices. In that menu there is another tab that says Channel 1-16. If you click where it says Unassigned, down in the Screen Control Inspector there is a checked box that says "Send unassigned MIDI to all Channel Strips". If you uncheck that box then everything works perfectly. It is a little extra work having to assign the keyboard everytime you ad a channel strip but when you have to do some serious programming it's worth it.
Anyone who needs to program with multiple devices should uncheck this right out of the gate. It will save you from pulling your hair out.
Thank you Bruno for your help. It is much appreciated.

  • How to play multiple instruments simultaneously on different MIDI channels?

I'm very new (today!) to Mainstage and I have a Yamaha HX-3 organ with three keyboards (Upper - Channel 1, Lower - Channel 2, Pedalboard - Channel 3). I'd like to play all three channels live simultaneously with a different instrument on each one (ie. Piano, Organ and Bass) but I can't figure out how to do this.
I've managed to setup a concert with all three keyboards on different MIDI channels with three different instruments but I can only play one of the keyboards at a time. The other two show MIDI keyboard activity but no sound...HELP!
I also have Native Instruments Komplete 7 if that would help in this regard (I know the Hammond organ sound in Komplete lets me play all three keyboards at the same time).
    Thanks,
    Don Thompson.

First create 3 keyboards in Layout mode and assign each to its own MIDI channel (I think you may have done this already). Then, create three channel strips, either at the Concert, Set, or Patch level with the three sounds you want to use. Each Channel Strip can be assigned to a different keyboard from your layout. To do this, go to Edit mode, select a Channel Strip, and look at its attributes in the pane below your layout. I don't have MS in front of me but there should be a dropdown list with the keyboards that you have in your layout. Just pick the right one for each strip and you should be good to go.

  • What's with midi controller 23 in audio instruments?

If I record midi continous controller #23 to an audio instrument track it doesn't come up as a curve in hyperdraw. It comes up like a long straight line (at the top of the region) with dots and it can't be edited properly (the only possible values are 0 and 1.
Controller data #23 recorded an a standard midi track works fine.
I would like to know if there's something wrong with my setup or if anyone else gets this too.

Obviously a display bug using range 0-1 instead of 0-127.
Most stumping however that just controller #23 seems to be affected.
Well, another little mystery of Logic...

  • Freeze tracks that use instrument objects: explode by midi channel?

    Hello everyone,
I've hit a CPU and/or Disk speed wall and need to start freezing tracks. I've setup my environment to use "instrument objects" to control my sampler instruments, allowing for most of my instruments to access multiple articulations from one track. Great method for composition/arranging, but unfortunately it makes freezing instruments a challenge!
I know other users employ a similar method in their own Logic setups, and was wondering how do you guys deal with freeze files? Is there an "explode by midi channel" function which will separate a single track into multiple tracks per midi channel, which I can then easily freeze?
In a somewhat related question, how do you guys with similar setups use folders? Can I put all these "exploded" parts back into a folder for organizational purposes?
Thanks in advance for your reply!

    Jonathan,
I'm very very slow to adopting the freezing of tracks to free up resources. I highly doubt that I'll be using it much in the future, because I don't like the fact that the behavior of simple commands like CMD-A doesn't work to select frozen tracks. There are other things about freezing that interrupt my work methods.
I'm very seriously considering getting a second computer to act as an orchestral "module" which I can play via MIDI (over a network, preferably). Based on my experiences during my latest project, doing 4 complex orchestrations, I can see that the amount of time and trouble it takes to freeze tracks/disable instruments to free up resources, and then re-enable them if a change is needed to any given part, will get very long in the tooth after a while. The biggest problem with this is running the risk of Logic crashing when it runs out of RAM.
So for now I'll use the occasional frozen track, or print parts as needed to free up instruments, but budget willing, not for much longer.
    Best,
    -=iS=-

  • Adding audio instrument to 24-track audio template: no MIDI or sound

I've been trying to add an audio instrument track to what was originally a song that started out with the 24-track audio template in Logic.
I don't seem to have any trouble adding an audio instrument track, but when I then choose the audio instrument - and, yes, I have chosen an instrument, not just clicked on the track - I get no sound nor can I see any MIDI connection in the transport window.
Everything works fine on songs based on templates that start out with both audio and audio instruments. So, I'm wondering if there's something I need to add to the environment to allow the MIDI connection? I admit I'm not an expert once in the environment, but a quick glance seems to show the general MIDI already set up.
    I simply want to add a B3 to a band's rhythm track.
    Any help?
    TiBook 800   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

if you are getting midi into logic with other songs then there must be something missing in this song. open your environment to the click and ports layer and make sure there is a cable that runs out of the sum, of the Physical input to the Sequencer input (Record & Thru). there may be a couple other objects there like a keyboard and monitor object, just make sure everything is linked together.
    hope this helps

  • Assign instruments to Midi channels?

Hi. How do i set up instruments/patches in mainstage and only have them work on specific midi channels?
For example being able to have 16 patches, each with an individual midi channel.
    Is this possible in Mainstage3?

    Hi
Use the "MultiTimbral" function in the Channel Strip Inspector to specify which strips respond to which MIDI channels, per patch.

also, it is saying that sample rate 44100 recognized but for one, the session is set and locked in to 96khz. with the computor as master for mlan to the O2R. with no other audio gear even hooked up. so where would it even be getting 44100 from??
also, this with only playing back 7 tracks with a 10k rpm drive. so that isn't the problem.

Sorry I can't help...
The message is a bit of a misnomer (or is it?) in the sense that if there is no MIDI, it's obviously not Audio & MIDI that are out of sync. All audio/MIDI sequencers that I'm aware of internally sync MIDI to Audio. MIDI timing is taken from the audio driver/sample-rate otherwise MIDI would be free floating and locked to the computers clock rather than the audio stream. In a sense... there's always MIDI. When this error pops up it just means the internal relationship between The Audio stream/sample rate and and MIDI timing has exceeded an error threshold. It's most often caused by a blip in the audio stream. It can also (rarely) be caused by MIDI drivers and or MIDI errors,
Possible causes: bad audio drivers, a rogue plugin, a processor spike, a corrupted song, Logic sync settings, some other computer process going on,
MIDI Clock being sent out on all channels, plus a bunch of other reasons I've long forgotten.
Oh, "the audio interface". MOTU devices often need to be reset if they're left plugged in during an OS upgrade, or Logic upgrade.
Note: if you have a firewire audio interface. Before any OS upgrade or and major app upgrade. Unplug the firewire cable and turn the interface off. OS upgrades initialize the firewire ports and it can play havoc with some firewire audio units.
