Audio Instrument track disablign audio tracks

While doing some band recording this weekend, I noticed a weird phenomenon.
I had about 8-10 audio tracks and one MIDI track using a Logic instrument. I armed all of them for recording. When I hit "Record", only the Logic instrument would record anything. The audio tracks would just remain blank as the SPL moved forward, recording nothing.
However, if I started recording with the Logic Instrument track unarmed, then then armed it after recording had begun, it would work; the audio tracks and the Logic instrument would record fine.
It may just be my Logic ineptitude. What was I doing wrong?

What does SHIFT-select do that normal select/arm does not?
The concept is similar to that of the OS. Shift-clicking allows you to select groups (of, say, files).
This is how you tell Logic that you want to record audio MIDI simultaneously. You can disengage MIDI record on the fly, or switch to another track (if you want to record another, pre-configured Audio Instrument or MIDI track from the same MIDI keyboard)...

Ah.. then I suspect you just need to go to Logic's prefs/Audio and check CoreAudio...

  • Can't record software instrument track to an audio track

I'm frustrated at the moment. I'm sure this has worked before.
I have a project that contains external MIDI tracks, software instrument tracks and Garageband instrument tracks. All tracks play when I unmute them. The external ones play thru a Roland synth and audio comes back via ADAT thru my Firestudio interface.
I created an audio track for each MIDI track. I can record the output of each synth track as audio one at a time. But if I unmute one software instrument track, send it's output to channel 1 and 2, set the inputs of my record-enabled track to 1 and two I get no audio recorded. I know it's gotta be something simple that's wrong, but can't figger it out.

If you want to record an internal software instrument to audio you can just select the track and use the "export track as audio" command from the file menu. Or you can select the regions and use the bounce in place feature or solo the instrument in question and use the bounce command and import the resulting file. Logics INPUTs 1 and 2 are not the same as Logic's OUTPUTS 1 and 2. If they were you'd get a feedback loop. If you are careful and MUST do it this way, you can cable from outs 1&2 to inputs 1&2 but you must first disable the output the track you are recording on to to avoid feedback.

  • Convert software instrument tracks to audio

I'm trying to get up to speed with Logic after having been a Digital Performer user for years. One place I'm struggling is trying to convert a track that's basically MIDI controlling a software instrument into a new track that contains the underlying audio (with all effects) of the software instrument.
I used to do this in DP by sending the software instrument to a bus and then "recording"
The bus structure on Logic is quite a bit more confusing (to me) compared to DP and the manuals have too much information to find the answer quickly.
Hoping that someone can point the way.
    Thanks
    D

Either route that Instrument track to a Bus and select that Bus as an Input for an audio track (now possible in Logic 8) and record in realtime (enable software monitoring in your Audio prefs and use the Input monitor of the new track to monitor the recording, select "no output for the recording Bus) or use the normal "bounce" function which will bounce your Instrument also in offline mode which is faster ("solo" the Instrument before bouncing!). After bouncing import that Audio file onto a new track. I presonally prefer the Bus recording method as the waveforms are created whilst recording.

  • System Overload with 6 audio tracks and 2 instrument tracks!!

Hello, this is my first post. I'm learning how to use Logic Pro 7.2.1. I had 6 audio tracks open and 2 instrument tracks. I press play and I get an error message saying there is a system overload. I'd also received this message with garageband and hardly any tracks, but before today I got the message once, clicked OK and then was able to continue.
Also in the transport window right underneath the tempo, my version had the number 201. I realized that I can increase this number of memory to 2158. But in the Apple Pro Training book by Peachpit press, I see screenshots of their transport window and they have 899,852.
After calling Apple it appears that this is a case which requires me to pay $199 to get help from them, but to me it is either a bone head mistake by me or a problem with my computer I imagine. I would really appreciate some help. Thank you.

I have got plenty of system overloads on my powerbook and I only had about the same amount of tracks you had. The way I overcame the problem is by first making sure that no other programs are running ( Just to be safe). Then you should freeze the tracks that you are not editing at the time so the audio engine does not have to process all of it in real time. You can freeze all the tracks if you wanted to but you can only edit the ones that are not frozen. The freeze button looks like a snowflake on each track. Just click it and hit play and it will take a second to process it and then you will not have to worry about that track taking up so much audio processing power. You can go to the view menu and make sure the Track Freeze Button is enabled so you can used it. Try it out it should help you out.

  • Mono audio instrument tracks

Good day To each and every! I saw this posted one time before but i cant seem to find the post. All of my audio instrument tracks are in mono for some reason. Im still using 7.2 and this is the first time this has happened. how do I make all of them stereo again. I cant load any of the presets with them being in mono. Thanks A Lot!

It's not whether the Track is stereo, but which instrument you've selected for that Track.
If you can change from one instrument to another, then you can also pick the stereo version of the instrument which is currently mono.
You are not changing an instrument from mono to stereo; you are choosing a different instrument (although it has the same name). You are switching instruments.
Suppose you have three Audio Instruments: "iBassoon", "iHorn (mono)", & "iHorn (stereo)".
You know how to switch the Audio Instrument Track from "iHorn (mono)" to "iBassoon", right?
Use the same technique (Command-click, click-&-hold, whichever way works for you) to change from "iHorn (mono)" to "iHorn (stereo)".
Look around; perhaps you're just not expecting to find the stereo instruments in a different folder from the mono instruments (after all, it would make sense for instruments with the same name to live together, wouldn't it? — But that's not the way it works here)!

  • Recording Audio and Audio Instrument Tracks Simultaneously?

    Hi all,
sometimes i'll leave an audio track armed (which my synth is hooked up to), while playing keys on an audio instrument track, and it usually creates some incredible textures. Every time I try to record the two at the same time, it never works. Is it in any way possible to record audio and virtual instrument tracks at the same time? Would it matter that I have the same synth hooked up as both (I use audio tracks for the synth, and MIDI for the virtual instruments)? Many thanks!

Thanks for the responses! I'm actually able to arm both an audio and a virtual instrument track at the same time, and I hear both playing over each other. But as soon as I begin recording, I notice that only the virtual instrument track is recording what i'm playing. Any way around this?

  • How do you record an external Midi Instrument + Software instrument track down to a combined Audio track ?

I have two piano sounds I'm trying to blend into one. One is an external MIDI module set up as an external instrument within Logic and the other is a software plugin instrument (Ivory II). I'm trying to record the blended pianos into a single audio track so I can ditch the midi track and more so the CPU intense software Instrument track (it's killing my setup....). For the life of me I can't figure out how to assign both these entities as inputs and get them to record simultaneosuly onto an audio track.
My setup is a Presonus Studiolive 16.4.2 with the following assignments:
The external MIDI module's audio output is routed stereo directly into channel strips 9 and 10. By default the firewire output of this channel strip is returned to firewire outputs 9-10 on the studiolive, but this really doesn't matter since recorded audio is being monitored thru the main output buss assigned to channels 17 and 18.
My software plugin (Ivory II) is routed to output channels 17 and 18 which is the default setting for routing the output to the master buss for the Presonus.
On my audio track that's setup in Logic I can assign the inputs to 9 and 10 and I get the external midi module's output to record, but I cannot find any way to get the software instruments output into this mix because there is no input assignment for this.
Is there any way to combine these two entities and assign them to record onto a single audio track or am I missing something here? If there's no simple way to do this, can somebody offer any tip or ideas on how to accomplish the same thing here. I really need to ditch the software plugin. My setup only seems to be able to handle one plug in at a time on the software instrument side. Not sure why that is because my setup is not that old and the memory on my MBP is maxed out at 4GB....but that's another topic of discussion
Any suggenstions would be much appreciated...

    Thanks for the reply....
I actually tried freezing the software instrument track and that had little if no effect on CPU. I then read in the book or somewhere that the freeze function really only works on effect plugins. Don't know if that's true in all cases, but that seems to be what's happening.  Still would like to combine these tracks and I'm guessing I'm going to have to get creative with bussing or subgroups to make this happen. Unfortunately I think the fact that my Presonus board has hardmapped output routings for all the inputs makes that difficult, but haven't actually tried yet. I'm thinking if I can reroute the midi modules audio output input into the Presonus to a subgroup and then route the software instrument plug in to the same subgroup that I can then mix/capture this and hopefully route the audio's input to the subgroup to pick up the mix.
Does this make sense to anybody reading this?
We'll see and I'll post the results if it works....
    thanks...b

  • Instrument track to audio

when dumping an instrument track to audio track, if you have a waves plug on the out put 1&2
does this get applied to the instrument track when exported to audio track?

Not when you export, only the channel strip inserts will be applied. You can however bounce the soloed track to apply all bus and master efx.

  • Only 24 audio instrument tracks?

In Logic Pro 7.1.1, am I allowed only 24 audio instrument tracks? I cna't seem to add any more than that.

    Additionally, you can use
    Track->Create Multiple
from the arrange-this will add the audio objects to the environment, good for existing projects. Just make sure the max # of audio tracks is set properly in the audio hardware and drivers window. Also, If you use setup asst you can use functions from the environment such as update, and then use the environment from the session with ample environment objects as the source for import. So you can import or set your environment for existing songs and base them on newer/larger environments. Make sure you work on copies of songs when importing environments.

  • Audio instrument tracks limit?

I'm trying to establish a template that loads my favorite softsynths and samplers. Is there a way to use more than 32 tracks of audio instrument tracks? Logic's only letting me see and name 32 tracks.
    Fresh_oil

Check your Global Track Mixer, if it is showing more that 32 instrument channels, you just need to add them to your arrange window. Otherwise, you need to add the audio objects in your environment (or running the Logic Setup Assistant may help set up the number of instruments you need). Logic should support up to 128 audio instruments.

  • Max NUmber of Instrument Tracks Due to Rewire??

I have a template set up with 28 audio objects (that were previously instrument tracks) dedicated to rewire tracks (basically 14 pairs stereo bussed to an Aux). When i try to create a new audio object and assign it to an available instrument track, and then insert a soft synth, i cannot actually play the soft synth with my midi controller. i can step enter notes by creating a sequencer track, but as far as playing it manually from my Radium 49, no dice. My transport is not showing note-on values either. But i can play my rewire tracks just fine.
Am i doing something wrong here? Is it becuase i used all of my instrument tracks to create the 14 pairs for rewire? But if i create a new track (which creates an available audio track that i convert to an audio instruement track in the instrument paramater box in the arrange window) there are over 120 available instrument tracks for me to choose from!
i'm very confused - can anyone help? how can i add more instruement tracks for me to use in addition to my rewired tracks??
    thanks

so i went to try this over the weekend for the first time and it seems that garageband limits the number of recording simultaneous tracks to 8?!!! i had 14 mics setup covering an entire band (drums, guitars, keys, vocals, etc.) only to find out that i had to narrow it down to 8 to satisfy garageband.
is this correct? why on earth they would limit it to 8 is beyond me. i have 7 mics on the drums alone!!!
any help appreciated on how to configure more tracks to record simultaneously with.
if GB cannot do this, can digital performer?
    thanks!
Apple limits GB to 8 simultaneous inputs max as a way to distinguish it, as a free app, from Logic, which does not have this limit. All of the full-featured DAWS - Logic, DP, Protools - allow many-track recording.
If you have 7 mics on drums, you might want to send them into a stereo buss in your board so they will only take up 2 tracks in GB (submixing drums is not unheard of). That brings you down to 9 tracks so if you want to record in GB, you're almost there (1 more submix and it'll work).
Beyond that, though, if you're going to want to regularly record more than 8 tracks at once, you might want to consider moving to one of the fuller-featured DAWs.

  • Copying an entire software instrument track from one project to another

    Hello,
Is it possible to copy or import one entire software instrument track from one GB 3.0.2 project to another? At the moment I've got to copy a region from one project, open another project, paste it in the 2nd project, and open the other one again (which appears to close the 2nd project) to copy the second region. This is incredibly cumbersome because I can't have both projects open at the same time.
Has anyone found a less tiresome method to do this?
    Thanks

The easiest work-around I can imagine is to join all regions of the track and copy that. Another option is to freeze the track, which will turn it into normal audio. You might also add your MIDI parts to the library. That will avoid the need to switch between projects, but does require one or two more actions.
