Audio Interfaces Besides M-Audio and taSCAM?

I'm having major problems with both and am ready to throw them out of the window
Suggestions, please

looks like I have to pony up the 1.2-1.6 G's for the RME and sell the POS interfaces to finance it
Even though I've been chatting up RME, I agree with iStevius that you shouldn't have to spend that much money just to get something that works. And even some of the more expensive interfaces, like Apogee's Duet and Ensemble, have also been plagued by driver issues.
When you call M-audio, do they acknowledge it's a driver issue? If it's not, it may be that there's a problem with the hardware itself, that it's just broken. Is it under warranty at all? Could you send it to M-Audio and see if there's something wrong with it? Things like the 410 are made to keep costs as low as possible, so it's possible that it just crapped out.
Also, beyond basic reliability, are you happy with the sound of the 410? Do you do this just for fun every now and then or are you more serious about recording? If the 410 meets your needs (when it's working!), then it might not make sense to invest in a higher end interface. However, if you feel like you've hit a wall in terms of sound quality as well, then it might make sense to shop around.

  • Need advice on an Audio Interface for guitar, bass and vocals

    I have a G4 Dual Processor 500.
For now I'm using a Griffin 1/4" to 1/8" adapter cable. I plug one end into my guitar and the other into my Microphone jack on the back of my computer. I even tried using a splitter to share my microphone port. This allowed me to share the stereo signal with Guitar and bass ( by setting guitar to left mono and bass to right mono in GB). This doesn't work well at all!!!
My goal is to have my friend come over so we can record live into GB using a custom software drum track with two real instrument tracks, guitar (me) and bass (him).
So, what is a good multi track audio interface (mixer) to do this with. Hopefully one that doesn't have latency problems. I think a four track would be enough, right.
    Is firewire better than USB?
What mixers do most GB muscians use?

Sorry to highjack this discussion. I'm new to the boards and couldn't figure out how to post a new message.
Does anyone know when M-Audio might be updating their drivers to support Leopard? I've been monitoring the M-Audio site, but they're not being very specific with a time estimate. Does anyone remember how long it took them when Tiger was released? I really miss being able to use my Firewire 410 interface and 88es Keystation.
    Thanks in advance,

  • Audio latency on macbook pro and tascam us-1641

I'm having an issue with latency using:
macbook pro 2.3 ghz, 3GB RAM, 120 GB hard drive
    logic pro 8
tascam us-1641 fully updated (1.01 firmware, and 1.0 OS X driver installed)
When I listen to live sound, there's about a 1/2 second delay. I've tried adjusting the adjusting the buffer size to a lower setting (below 256), but then I start to hear wierd noises, or nothing at all. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    CH

I'm having the EXACT same issue as you (my Macbook Pro has 4 gigs o RAM)
I've had the issue since I bought it, and I have since given up on Software Monitoring through Logic and now just use the US1641's lame hardware monitoring (you dont even get a software control panel for the 1641, ****, my ANCIENT AARDVARK Q10 HAD A FRIGGIN CONTROL PANEL!!!!) and I cant even pan the input (Which is essential for me doing guitar overdubs!).
I mean seriously. I know this thing is USB, but I really feel Tascam cut too many corners. Given its only $400 but the lack of stability on OS10.4 and the lack of a control panel of some sort is enough for me to ebay this thing and finally get a Motu unit.
Anyone hear of a patch or fix with this issue?

  • Freezing anomalies and Error messages when using MOTU audio interface

The following problem occurs when using my MOTU 828mk2 audio interface.
The audio freezes up when playing back in Logic and any other time on the computer I'm attempting to play audio(internet, movie watching, etc.). I'm using a Mac Pro with 3gb ram. The program itself will often freeze up when attempting to play audio as well but works fine if the MOTU is turned off. The same thing goes for the internet and other programs. For instance, if I'm trying to listen to audio via the internet the page will freeze up and I most often wind up force quitting my browser.
The problem has been getting worse but now audio will not play through the MOTU but for intermittent short second stints or so before the audio in any application freezes up(rainbow spin wheel).
In Logic Express 7 this message first began to pop up:
"Error while trying to synchronize audio and MIDI".
This message is what pops up most often now:
"Logic Express has detected a possible conflict between one or more third party MIDI or audio drivers. -Be sure to install the latest drivers for all audio and MIDI equipment connected to you computer, and remove any older or unused drivers."
I have installed the recent Universal audio installer so I should be up to date with the MOTU driver but I don't know now about these, "third party drivers".
I do have my MOTU install disk so I could remove everything and reinstall..? *Do I have to remove old drivers? If so, how do I do this?*
NOTE: I had this same problem last year. For some reason I do not recall how it was resolved.

This is still a major problem for me. Any recommendations?

  • Will this setup run okay and audio interface advice please!

Okay, please forgive me any stupid comments. I am merely a humble musician been thrown into the deep end by some friends looking for a sound tech for their show.
Will all this play nice with each other in this setup?

I don't yet have an audio interface. Any reccomendations and suggestions welcome. USB preferred, nothing flashy just something that does the job.
    Thank you!

    Hi
For this to work, you would need to set up an Aggregate device using Audio MIDI Setup, and then to set Mainstage audio preferences to use this aggregate as the audio input device.
You might do better to get an audio interface with more than 2 inputs?

  • ? on Using which format of Audio Interface with a Imac i3

    Hi,
I have been reading and reading about this topic. My (R.I.P.) eMac has been replaced by a very nice and fast Intel i3 Imac with FW800 and plenty of USB 2.0 and SP/Dif (even)
Fortunately most all of any music gear that needed driver or firmware updates for Snow Leopard had them available, but my Tascam US-120 (USB 1.1) does not so have been looking at USB 2.0 (though its amazing how many USB 1.1 USB Audio Interfaces are still be produced and at $$$ prices. Firewire Audio Interfaces are at FW 400 and with a Firewire 800 port on the back of the iMac appears ? that a interface cable is the required or ? only way to use a Firewire interface 1) I want to make sure I am understanding this correctly, and 2) is this safe ? to do 3) I am getting a FW 800 Extrenal Hard Drive so that is a match, 7200RPM,
I do plug in to the Interface (or did) at times 2 microphones XLR type (to put mic's on a amplifier) , a Electric Guitar , or a Acoutsic Electric Guitar in to the interface or record it with a mic's, I have a MIDI Keyoard that has MIDI in-out as well as USB in, and also plugged two power monotors(Linear Flat Speakers) in to the out puts of the previous Audio Interface.
Last Question I reviewed the bit/kHz of the USB 1.1 interfaces and they range from 16 bit//48 kHz,24bit 44.1kHz, to 24bit 48kHz to 24bit 96kHz (on a USB 1.1 connection from the particular USB audio Interfaces when you find a USB 2.0 modem the max bit rate is 24 and the kHz (ranges from 96 kHz to 192 kHz) I am not a electronics genius
but have recorded music in to computers for over 6+ years and the Resolution rates of the USB 1.1 do not make sense to me (I realize that MP3 (being compressed) and CD quality recordings are only so high but..
I am going to (later) update to Ilife 11 with Garageband 11' which can record up to the 24 bit range so that is a consideration as well
The FW 400 resolution rates in the chart I have are a minimum of 24 bit and kHZ range of 96 kHz to 192 kHz . and in theory USB 2.0 is a bit faster at 480 mbs versus FW 400
at 400 mbs and from what I have learned USB 1.1 is slowest, I guess I am missing something, over thinking this or. Just want to do it safely, and get all of the inputs and out puts I need (I can even use the SP/Dif that comes on alot of Audio Interfaces, The AES Audio Engineers Society just wrapped up a convention and have been looking at their site and new product releases.
Any Input would be greatly appreciated and I wish I could write less and explain more!

If you can stretch your budget (quite a bit actually, but you can find deals on the net) I can't recommend the RME Fireface 800 models enough. Lots of I/O, never EVER had a crash, and the drivers and tools are rock solid. RME also makes a FF400 which has less I/O, but also costs less. The sound is steller, and it has no discernable noise. These are Firewire interfaces, but they just camme out with one that also talks USB.

  • The best audio interface with Mac Mini using new & existing equipment?

    Hi,
I got my existing set-up back in 2003. I'm now about to update it.
I've talked to Apple Technical Support re which computer is best for me.
Some important questions remain in terms of the audio interface or sound bridge I should use.
I've detailed below my existing set-up, my existing configuration, my desired set-up (as recommended by Apple expert) and questions I have.
    Existing set-up:
    Hardware...
    1. ViewSonic HDMI 1080p Full HD LED monitor
    2. PowerMac G4 (PowerPC processor) computer
    3. PCI-424 soundcard within computer (works in conjunction with MOTU 2408 mk3 unit)
    4. MOTU 2408 mk3
    5. Quested monitors
    6. Focusrite Session Pack ff ISA220 compressor
    7. MOTU micro lite (midi-usb interface)
    8. Keyboard (yet to choose - I'll explain later)
    9. ADK Tube Condenser Commemorative Edition microphone
    10. ADK Tube Condenser Commemorative Edition microphone power box (supplies both power and phantom power)
    Software...
    11. Tiger 10.4.11 operating system
    12. Logic Studio 8 music program
    Desired set-up:
    1. ViewSonic HDMI 1080p Full HD LED monitor
    2. Mac Mini full spec = £999.00
    3. _______________________________________
    4. _______________________________________
    5. Quested monitors
    6. _______________________________________
    7. _______________________________________
    8. _______________________________________
    9. ADK Tube Condenser Commemorative Edition microphone
    10. ADK Tube Condenser Commemorative Edition microphone power box (supplies both power and phantom power)
    Software...
    11. Top-end operating system = Comes with Mac Mini
    12. Logic Pro X music program = £139.99
    Existing configuration:
ViewSonic HDMI 1080p Full HD LED monitor goes into PowerMac G4 (PowerPC processor) computer
PCI-424 soundcard within computer (works in conjunction with MOTU 2408 mk3 unit)
MOTU 2408 mk3 used as my audio interface for sound in and sound out. This means that the sound comes out of computer via the MOTU 2408 and out of my Quested monitors (they are active so self-powered) which are attached to the MOTU's outputs.
When I record vocals I sing into my ADK microphone (this microphone sources its own power from its own box which also feeds it Phantom Power) which is connected by a mic to jack cable to the Focusrite compressor which is connected by jack to jack cable to the MOTU 2408 which then goes into my computer via a firewire cable.
When I play keyboards or use my keyboard as a midi controller it connects to my computer via the MOTU micro lite (midi-usb interface).
I don't currently have a keyboard. I used to use my basic Yamaha PSR-540 keyboard as a midi controller but as it's not weighted and faulty I needed to get a new one. We got a new one via Thomann which was the M-Audio Pro Keys 88 keyboard but this quickly became faulty. We returned it and have since been considering other weighted keyboards. I am simply wanting a keyboard with Aftertouch, either 76 or 88 keys, weighted keys and very importantly, hammer action where the action is fast. I don't care for other controllers on the keyboard, on-board sounds, iPad compatibility or whatever.
    My Questions:
Q1) Can you recommend any keyboards meeting my specifications?
Q2) I can't imagine any of the Blue or other USB mics competing with my ADK and I'm quite happy with it. For vocals and when I've wanted to play the keyboard in as audio (not as a midi controller) I've used the Focusrite compressor to boost the sound. I'm not using many functions/presets on the compressor as I know it's best to record the sound of vocals mostly raw, is this correct, and if so is it worth me continuing to use this compressor or sell it?
Q3) Do I need to have the MOTU micro lite (midi to usb) unit? Don't most keyboards these days connect direct usb to usb on the computer?
Q4) I'm happy and used to the sound out from my Quested monitors. I'm happy and used to the sound in using my ADK microphone. What do I need for these to work best with the Mac Mini? Is my MOTU 2408 good for this, or is another MOTU product needed, or another product altogether?
Q5) Depending on (Q4) do I need a soundcard installed in the Mac Mini as I read on a forum that these days the audio interface acts like the soundcard?
Q6) I have such a bad connection to the internet it's like I have Dial-up!!! I use Airport Wireless which is connected to a router downstairs, which is 02 Broadband. Internet's not an issue downstairs on my girlfriend's intel PC which also uses a wireless connection but not Airport. Is this a problem because of my Airport, or do I need to get a router for upstairs, or should I connect it directy to the router downstairs by ethernet cable?
    Many thanks!

Is there a reason you don't want to use your current Tascam?

  • Help! audio interface problems

I dont think this is just a logic problem but my audio interface keeps on stuttering and stopping, especially when using logic. Sometimes the time bar will be moving but there will be no sound then if i stop it might play a stutter or snippet of sound. There is no problem when listening through the laptop speakers. This has started happening with i tunes also.
    interface= tascam us-122
If anyone can help that'd be great as it is really holding me back.
Buffer is set to 1024, cant find more recent drivers.

    Hi,
I found this inside the installer package:
"This is version 3.4.0 of the Mac OS X Driver for the TASCAM US-122. The version you are installing requires Mac OS X 10.3.9 ("Panther") or later. This version is also compatible with Intel-based Macintosh computers using Mac OS X 10.4.4 or later."
Note: Be sure to disconnect your US-122 from your computer before continuing with this installer!
It looks like maybe...the revision for Mac OS 10.4.9 and later, in which Apple changed the FW and also maybe the USB stuff, might be the issue.
If you have the time and inclination, I would try to install the Mac Os up to 10.4.4 and see if it works there... it's a bummer, but as I understand it, they no longer support this hardware anyways... so if you really have to use it, this might be the way to go.
    Cheers

  • Driver Wars - DP5/Audio interfaces vs. Core Audio

    Dear Digital Music Users:
Is anyone currently using Digital Performer 5.0 and/or using an outboard audio interface to record vocals and guitars on a Mac Mini? Audio/Midi Set-Up recognizes my MOTU micro express for midi routing, but on the Audio side, it "sees" the Tascam US-1641, but the input and output level controls are grayed-out. Also, the facility inside of Digital Performer for accessing the driver config shows only Core Audio as a choice.
It looks as though there is a download for an update that has Core Audio implications listed on the apple.com downloads page, but I don't want to download anything until I hear that someone is actually using this machine for digital music production successfully. I love this Mini, but it has to make music.
I just read the thread from earlier this year re: Firewire audio devices; the Tascam
is a USB device but, perhaps, you've had other connection/driver experience since then ?
Any suggestions would be really appreciated.
    Thanks,

I agree about the Saffire. It is an amzing interface!
The other way that I used to get around latency is this...
1/ Direct monitor on the card. That is, set your USB/Input balance on the Mbox
2/ In logic record enable a track. Set up a send to a reverb bus, and set it to 'pre fader'
3/ Turn your fader right down to kill the direct signal.
You will have your system latency on your reverb but hey... it's reverb. If your latency isn't TOO big this should be acceptable.
But trust me, you'd get amazing results from the Saffire! The EQ and Compression strip on the inputs (optional) sound great. I loved mine, going to buy it back!

I’m having an intermittent problem with my midi controllers triggering Mainstage 3.
I’m using a PreSonus Firebox audio interface.
It’s been working fine for months, but now when I first turn on the computer in the morning , I’m not able to trigger MainStage from the keyboard.  I tried different midi controllers, different keyboards, different midi cords, and check midi preferences.  The audio interface is working fine and is recogonized, but the midi doesn’twork.  I re-started the computer several times and then finally it miraculously starts working again.
I’ve been having to this every day now.  Any help or ideas is very much appreciated.

I Had the same problem with a FireStudio. Try unplugging the FireWire plug and the power plug. Wait for a few seconds, then plug both back in. The light on my FireStudio was flashing blue/red which means "not connecting." I did what I just described, and everything works again. Hope it works for you.

  • Error message: "the previously selected audio interface is not available"

    HELP?!?!?!?!?
I'm stuck, and I can't go forward. Here's my issue:
I've bought a Focusrite Saffire LE, a simple firewire audio interface, for use with my Logic Express 7 (with all the latest updates). I run the setup assistant and select my saffire as the audio interface to use, and then when logic runs I get the message "the previously selected audio interface is not available" and it defaults to my Macbook Pro's internal microphone and speakers.
Just for sanity I've tested the audio interface with garageband and it's fine. My other audio apps aso run fine using the saffire as the audio interface. The setup assistant for logic has no problem finding the saffire, so why does it get rejected as soon as logic starts?!?!?
Please - this is driving me crazy.

I asked Focusrite for some help, and they said it should work (which I knew) and made some suggestions. Here's their email:
"Saffire LE should work fine in Logic Express.
Try resetting your logic preferences. Go to Logic > preferences > initialise all except key commands.
Do you still have the same problem?
Do you have any other firewire devices attached?
Have you had any other interfaces installed in the past?"
All good suggestions, but so far no luck.
Has someone else got the same config as me? (15" Macbook Pro and focusrite saffire le)?

  • Cannot record any sound with my M-Audio Fast Track Ultra audio interface

Have been using Logic for about 3 months and was able (primarily via keyboards/midi recording) to create some decent recordings (via the 'hard' way, some books, video training and without bothering a lot of people with many of my questions). Time has come to start with analog audio recording and here my problem starts. Have recently purchased the Fast Track Ultra audio interface from M-Audio.
Drivers are installed correctly. The device is saying that it functions properly. It gets recognized by my iMAC. It gets recognized in Logic and can enable the device in my audio preferences. I can clearly see in the control panel of my USB audio interface it is creating sound and meters are going up and down.
I get sound in my head phones (which are connected to the audio interface) but within Logic no sound is coming in while with the build in microphone everything seems to work fine. Have played around all kind of settings in my audio/midi configuration utility but no result.
Who can help me out ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Jozef.

Have done a test within Garageband and it works correctly overthere

  • Audio interface loses connection

    Hi
I've recently bought myself two audio interfaces: Edirol FA-66 and Mackie Tapco firewire, both with two combo inputs and firewire 400 connection. When i connect either one of them to my macbook pro (2,53 GHz), it works for a while and suddenly loses connection. The sound plays for a few seconds through my internal speakers and most of the time, it reconnects after a couple of seconds back to the audio interface. Could this possibly have anything to do with snow leopard? (I think I've read something about this). Or would it be something else? (I'm thinking of the FW400->FW800 cable I'm using, some kind of problem with the processor,... ).
As I am intending to use my laptop for live performances, this problem really needs to get solved...
I'd be very thankful for any suggestion
    greetings
    Kobe

Well I'm hoping I'll just take it back to the Apple service center and they'll magically fix it (since it's not even a year old!), but I get the feeling I'm going to get fobbed off with some lame excuse, to which they'll get a piece of my mind!
I've tried the Motu 828mk3 on my 5 year old PC running Windows 7 and it works, so I'm doubtful the problem is with the Motu unit. I've tried practically everything... reset the SMC, reset the PRAM, reset the MOTU, plugged in an external firewire drive/hub and chained the MOTU, toggled the optical inputs/outputs and nothing seems to work. The only things I haven't tried (that I can think of) are:
    a) another 800 to 400 firewire cable (I've only just bought this one so I'm loathe to spend extra on another to find out it doesn't solve the problem).
    b) a clean re-install of OSX (think I'll leave that to the Apple guys and gals).
    c) an express card with firewire 400 ports (again I'm loathe to spend money on this unless I KNOW it will solve the problem).
