  • Buzz on audio when recording and in playback - new mini mac?

Up until now I have been recording on a Macbook Pro, however I have recently moved onto a Mac Mini and that's when this problem started...
I am having trouble because when I play audio and the R button is on theres a high fuzz/ buzz/ ringing sound along with what I am playing. This is recorded and I can hear it when I listen back too. What's weird is that there's a dead silence between the notes. When recording software instruments through a usb midi keyboard it works and playback as it should.
I have tried changing the usb input of my sound card, using different instruments incase it's a buzz from that, changing the leads, and also checked the sound card still works fine with my old Macbook Pro. All this is fine. (I use an Alesis IO4 sound card)
All I can think is theres something I don't understand that I haven't done properly in Logic since installing it on the Mac Mini which differs to how it is set up on the macbook. That, or something is wrong with the Mac Mini itself however it's brand new from Apple.
Please help if you can shed any light on this.
I hope this makes some sense!

I would suggest providing an audio sample of the "fuzz/buzz/ringing sound" so that people can better guess what the problem is.
Noise comes from many places, and there are many types of noise.
Hard to take a shot in the dark otherwise.

  • Audio drops mid recording and/or playback

I recorded a video on my 3gs phone last night and it isn't that long, maybe 4 minutes in length. I was able to upload to my computer and when I went to play it back the audio drops halfway through. I checked on my iPhone and the audio drops out there as well. Anyone know why or how this happened that when I'm recording something the audio just stopped being recorded while the video was still recording?

  • Panning during recording and editing

    Good Day,
I want my video to have sections similar to Camtasia's pan and zoom option. I have tried insert --> standard objects --> zoom area, but it seems a bit cumbersome. I want the whole screen to focus on a section of a screen following the mouse. I am recording a demonstration type video.
    1) During recording, there is a drop down box for panning following the mouse, but the drop down arrow is faded out and cannot be selected. How can I select this option? I attempted to use hotkeys, but that did not work. Why might that be? It was not a key used for anything else in the program I was capturing.
    2) During editing, is there a way to ask it to pan according to the mouse location?
    3) Is zoom area my only option after recording? If I use it, everything is very pixellated. Is there any way to avoid the distortion of the image?
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi there
Sounds like you are using Full Motion capture. While Captivate has made improvements in this area it comes nowhere close to Camtasia. So if you really want full motion, Camtasia is your better bet.
Captivate works best with the slide-by-slide capture. In this mode you can pan, but it's far from graceful.
Personally, I blend Camtasia output with Captivate. Camtasia doesn't offer the ability to automatically create Text Captions as Captivate does. Building Simulations ins't nearly as easy in that tool either.
As I said, I see room in anyone's toolbox for both. You may wish to also try Jing. Perhaps even blend Jing output with Captivate. Jing is similar to Camtasia but limited to total time of five minutes I believe.
    Hopefully this helps... Rick

  • Audio Skipping in recording and playback

    Hey gang,
Ever since my Leopard install a few weeks ago, Soundtrack (2.0.1) has been skipping playback very bad. The audio cuts out for a split second every 2 seconds or so, and it's random and nasty sounding. Clearly this won't do. Ironically, myspace and other websites sites with media are also having the same problem.
anyone have an idea what the deal is?
I haven't changed my hardware config, but upggraded OS's, and everything had been running well under the previous OS. I notice a general sliggishness that I fed with more ram and it's still a problem. Before I start throwing more hardware the problem... your advice please.
ran diagnostics, everything seems to be working mormally,
    what's next?

    Okay Update for ya,
Took ol' Bessie into the apple store tonight to see a Genius.
Genius Mike at the apple store downtown performed a boot using his own external hard drive (running leopard). We were experiencing the same problem booting with his drive... a metronomic clicking gap popping (every second, like a clock) when listening to flash-based audio in safari. I had uninstalled my pro apps so I wasn't able to test soundtrack pro, but I imagine the same thing would have happened, because the safari audio was screwy.
just to be clear, iTunes is NOT screwed up for me. In fact, iTunes plays perfectly, which is why I'm still skeptical that this is a hardware issue. Mike at the apple store suggested this was a hardware issue that might be solved with the purchase and installation of a new motherboard ($875). I was not so keen to do that right away. I'm going to try a fresh install of OsX 10.4 first, after I back up everything to the 1TB external drive i bought on the same visit.
I want to again make it clear what my problem is...
I don't know which of these is the CAUSE or EFFECT of the problem but here they are:
    - a process named coreaudiod (you can find this in activity monitor) is showing a rhythmic increased level of activity every one second, spiking to about 3-5%. Then it pops back down to 1% for a few seconds and jumps back up every second for 3-15 seconds.
    - audio in safari (only flash driven audio like youtube and other flash sites) skips/pops or gaps for an instant every second. This repeats 3-15 times and then there is like 3-4 seconds of clear audio, and then the whole thing repeats
    - system sounds from skype or aim (incoming message sounds) are also affected, but since they're so breif, usually, they sound like they're cut off half way through the sound.
    - the same rhythmic audio popping occurs when playing back or recording in soundtrack pro.
    - the following applications are NOT AFFECTED: quicktime, iTunes, logic pro, logic express
I am lividly upset at this problem because of my nearly persistent use of soundtrack pro for the last year... it's totally unusable now.

  • Audio/Video skipping during certain slides

    Hi All,
I have been working on a screen simulation and until yesterday everything played back smoothly in the preview and also published.  Yesterday I made a couple of minor edits (replaced the audio on one slide (from Audacity), added a couple text captions, changed the font for several captions) and I started noticing skipping in the audio and video on a few slides (this happens in both preview and published). I have the filed saved in My Documents (not a network drive).  I have two versions (one with no skipping from 2 days ago (A) and one from yesterday with the skipping (B)), and have be playing with both trying to find the root cause.
On version A I tried to recreate the changes I made to B, pausing to watch after every change to find the cause.  It ended up being text captions I added to the bottom of half of the slides (simple text and says "Questions?  Contact ....").  Without this text the project plays fine.  Because verion B is more updated I figured if I just removed this text it would also get rid of the skipping.  However, this did not work. Has anyone else had any problems with audio and video skipping (almost like a scratched CD) throughout projects?  This project is not large (35 slides) and not overly advanced (software simulation) in Captivate 5 on Windows 7.  Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

This may not relate to your issue since you said it also skips occationally, but still worth looking at...

In general, before going back to tape or to an iDVD project, I always extract all the audio as my final step.

  • No live audio unless I press record and play but no way to check levels

Using Premiere Pro 6 and plugging my audio mixer into the input of my line input of the sound card, I can using Windows 7 select to hear the input all the time, say for some background music but I want to feed the mic through the mixer and lay an audio track.
So I add a new audio track, hit R and hit the recording button and then no input noise and no meters moving so hit play and hey presto, I hear audio, with a slight delay but blast - its already started recording before I setup levels etc.
Is there a work around to allow me hearing the live input when track laying this audio before hitting the play button ?
    Many Thanks

On CC2014.1 you can 'meter input(s) only' in keyboard shortcuts for the track mixer.
Not sure about monitoring though, or if this existed in CS6 (before my time!)

  • Recording and Sound Playback

I have made video clips in both Photobooth and Quicktime but cannot hear the audio on playback. I check the sound settings and midi settings and even did a PRAM set but no sound play on clips that I create

I have a movie on disk in mpeg. So I bought the upgrade for Quicktime, QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component for Mac OS.
I am able to play the movie on imovie but there is no sound. Have you any ideas as to how to fix it?
    Regards,
    Deb.

  • Place marker during recording and place back markers

    Hi,
I will be recording 5 channels of signals at rate of 200 samples/second for 1 hour or so. Meanwhile, I need to put markers for different user interventions. I would like to save in text file for other applications such as MS Excel. What would be a good format for the data file? One way would be keep adding NaN in an extra column and a message when the user enter a message and press a button. But it takes some space for the extra column and don't konw if other applications can read this column correctly. At the same time when the intervention occurs, need to draw a marker on the screen, and when VI is stopped, these markers need to be back-trackable when scrolling back.
Also, the data file may need a header that keeps track of all interventions in addition to the extra column. At the end, the header needs to join the data record to form the final data file. When playback, theses interventions show markers again on the screen. Also, the data file may need to be appendable.
Any suggestions and/or examples are appreciated. Thanks,
    Rut

So you would be talkinga bout 1000 pieces of data per second, x 60 sec/min, x 60/min per hour.  So 3.6 million pieces of data per hour.  Lets say 8 bytes per piece of data (depends on how you want to format the numeric value to a string).  So about 28.8 MB of data for one hour.  That isn't too large.  I would use a text based file format such as comma or tab delimited with CRLF at the end.  You could have 6th column that would either be blank or have the text note.  Excel should be able to open either of these just fine.  It would be a good idea to write the data using a producer/consumer architecture.  Accumulate the data to memory in chunks, and periodically write out the chunks to file.
I don't understand what you mean by drawing a marker on screen.  Do you mean have some X show up on a waveform graph?  If so you could create a 6th series of data with Nan interlaced with a numeric value such as 1 (no line and an X or other highly visible  data point) or someother value that shows up well on the graph considering the scale of the other values.  There won't be any easy way to associate an X with a text comment  other than displaying the text in a string indicator and picking it out of the array depending on which portion of the data is shown on the graph at that time.

  • Pause FMR recording and video playback capture not working??

    Hello!
I'm trying to record full motion recording in CAPTIVATE, but the PAUSE feature looks like it is not working for me. I even tried to modify the shortcut key, but nothing works. Anybody else have this trouble or am I missing something obvius here?? I thought that maybe the FMR mode cannot be PAUSED, but nothing on that matter can be found in the manual.
Also, I'm trying to produce e-learning content for PREMIERE and SOUNDBOOTH. I've noticed that video playback within PREMIERE is not captured by CAPTIVATE. I've seen on the forum that others had this issue. Is version 5 of captivate behaving the same? Is it still not possible to capture onscreen video playback?
Any info here would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

I'm having the same problem where Captivate 5 in FMR doesn't respond to the Pause key, however I'm noticing that there hasn't been a solution supplied here.
Is there another location/forum where Adobe representatives for Captivate are actively monitoring questions and problems for this product?

  • Record and Streaming playback

Hi guys I am a newbie to FMS, got excited about it when I heard that Amazon cloud services are now including FMS for a marginal increase in cost.
So all I am looking to do is:
    1) Record off a web cam and store the video using FMS
    2) Play the video stream using FMS.
If someone could point the way to some sample code, then I will be off an running.
    Thanks a bunch.

Go through FMS documentation - it should have simple code snippets for you to get started off.

  • My iPod skips during songs and is very delayed. I did the restore option multiple times but my problem persists. Help!

I have an iPod touch 2nd generation and therefore I can not download the new software. I did the restore option multiple times and my iPod still skips in the middle of songs, suddenly takes me out of a playlist, and is extrememly delayed. Anyway I could fix this?

If you already restored to factory defaults/new iPod then it appears you have a hardware problem. I would make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store and hear what they have to say.

  • Clicks and popping with recording and USB interface-HELP!!!

I've submitted this twice, got some responses, but has twice been ignored into oblivion. I apologize for the reposts, but this is VERY IMPORTANT, and I've been struggling with this issue for MONTHS now dealing with countless hours of lost time trying to fix it to no avail.
I'll try to include as much detail as possible.
    I use:
    MacPro 2 x 2.66 Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    3 GB memory
    Logic Express 8.0.2
245.13 GB empty space on Hard Drive
    THE PROBLEM:
    When I record, I get computerized clips/pops
    http://www.moogiex.com/clickpop.mp3
    http://www.moogiex.com/morecackling.mp3
I record via a PreSonus Audiobox USB. This problem did NOT start when I got the AudioBox, but several months after.
When I simply monitor the sound going through the box, the sound is fine. It's something between the Box, and the computer output. My guess is some incompatibility with Logic Express or Core Audio and the AudioBox.
It is NOT the microphone or the cable (the pops occur with anything going in, 1/4", XLR, different inputs).
The clicks START with Logic Express. If there are any recording program open when Logic Express is open, and I record, I get the SAME pops.
It did this both under 10.5.6, 10.5.7, and now 10.5.8.
    It is NOT clipping.
    When I'm recording with LE:
—There's 1.27 GB of FREE Memory while I'm recording.
—Logic Express is only using 6.7% of CPU while recording (of only one of the four processors), and about 90-95% of CPU space is free on all four processors.
—This happens on ANY audio input, and it doesn't matter how many other tracks, how long it is. I just started a brand new file and it does it.
—This happens when I use ANY input into my computer, but is STARTED by LE.
    Here are my Logic Preferences
    Core Audio- ENABLED
    System Memory Requirement 66.0 MB
    Device: AudioBox USB
    I/O Buffer Size: 1024
    I/O Safety Buffer- UNchecked
    Recording Delay: 0 samples
    Universal Track Mode- CHECKED
    24 Bit Recording- CHECKED
    Software Monitoring- CHECKED
    Independent Monitoring Level- Checked
    Process Buffer Range: Large
ReWire Behavior: Live Mode (Higher CPU Load)
    Maximum Scrub Speed: Normal
    Scrub Response: Normal
There is *no* driver with PreSonus' AudioBox. It is simply "compatible." Here's what System Profiler says:
AudioBox USB (plugged into my Mac Pro's front bottom port):
    Product ID: 0x0301
    Vendor ID: 0x194f
    Version: 1.08
    Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
    Manufacturer: PreSonus Audio
    Location ID: 0x00200000
    Current Available (mA): 500
    Current Required (mA): 500
    Here's what I've tried:
—Disabling CoreAudio, shutting LE 8 off, restarting LE 8, enabling CoreAudio again. This worked ONCE. It hasn't worked since.
—Disabling CoreAudio, shutting LE 8 off, SHUTTING DOWN, RESTARTING, opening LE 8, enabling CoreAudio again. This also worked ONCE. It hasn't worked since.
    —"CPU Saving Mode"
—I/O Buffer to 256, 512, and 1024 (default) (IMPORTANT?—speed of popping actually INCREASES with larger buffer?)
—I/O Safety Buffer checked and unchecked
    —Changing Recording Delay samples
—Pretty much fiddling with any of the controls
—Disabling Airport does nothing (was previously working fine with Airport running)
—Quit all applications, open up QuickTime (pro) or Audacity, and record something. It records perfectly. I go back to LE and the clicks and pops are gone, but only until I use anything with effects, then the clicks and pops return. This works SOMETIMES.
—Reset the preferences, and that has worked ONCE, and then the clicks and pops came back (albeit not as prominent, but they were still there).
—I trashed all files related to Logic and reinstalled. Worked ONCE.
—Restarting does help, but only temporarily, as soon as any pull is put on Logic, the problems return.
—Using a different USB port. I thought this was the solution because the problem shortly went away with regular use of Logic, but problem came back.
—Uninstalling Logic, Reinstalling Logic Express, same deal.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE HELP. I have a lot of money sunk into all this equipment that's practically useless with this recording issue.

Man, I feel for you on this.
I would love to see what your pops and clicks look like in your waveform. If you can take a snapshot of it and post the pic here that might help the diagnosis.
Your audio files certainly SOUNDS like you have a clocking problem. It really sounds like your CoreAudio driver/MacPro and your USB interface are not locked up in sync - as in: which is master and which is slave? I know some interfaces include a software control panel that allows you to set the status of the interface clock to slave to the computer or to be the master. It sounds like yours doesn't come with drivers but is there any control panel for this Presonus device?
Another place to check is in Applications>Utilities>Audio Midi Setup
On the left under "Properties for <your interface>" what does it say for the clock source?
Also in this panel, to the right it should have a button for "configure device". What happens when you click it? For example in my case it automatically launches my Apogee Duet Maestro control panel. In your case it might launch something similar, although I think you mention that you never installed anything, which I find strange to begin with - that this thing should just work out of the box with no driver at all.
I've struggle with w similar problem with my Apogee Duet, although nothing of this magnitude, maybe 4 or 5 clicks per 3 minutes of audio and these turn out to always be sample drops where 5-10 samples in a row are all the same in the waveform, as if my interface and computer stopped talking for a milli second. I did find that if my Apogee Duet was chosen as the default or system output in the Audio Midi Control Panel I mentioned above then the clicking was more frequent, as if choosing the audio interface for any system output caused a conflict with choosing it for Logic. I thought this was strange but you might want to investigate that further too.
At any rate, it does sound like a digital clock syncing issue to me by the sound of your audio. What effect does changing the sample rate of the recording have on the problem?
Let me know if any of this leads to anything.

  • Intel iMac G5, black screen during erase and install -- PLEASE HELP!

My sister's Intel iMac G5 seriously has been a lemon, it has had SO many issues. It's now 2 years old, and has been rather slow for the maybe the last year, but over the last month or so it has gone way downhill, and it literally takes an hour to boot up, and 4-5 minutes to do anything (open an application, look at a photo in iPhoto, etc.). So, we've been trying to "erase and install" with her install discs to hopefully give the computer a clean boot and see if it helps at all. She has already backed everything up.
She started the erase and install last night, and it was going ridiculously slow. This morning when she woke up, the blue progress bar had gone about half way across. Then she went to get her kids ready, and when she came back in it looked like the computer was rebooting itself (gray screen with apple), but then the screen turned black and she can't do anything on it. Has anyone seen anything similar to this before?
We have had so much trouble getting this to work (we tried an archive and install a few days ago, but it gave her an error at the end). For about a day we couldn't even get the computer to boot up at all, but then miraculously yesterday morning it booted! Please help, I've converted her to Macs but if I can't get hers fixed she may never get one again!!

Does she have the Apple Hardware Test CD/DVD?
