Audio Issue - Using Logic Pro and iMovie to Create Movies for Youtube

I am trying to use a combination of Quicktime, iMovie and Logic Pro 9 to create videos of me playing/singing songs to post on Youtube.  Before I can ask the question, I think it would be best to briefly explain my process, so here's one example:
One thing I try to do is video myself playing piano and singing at the same time.  What I do is open up Logic Pro and load my piano sound and arm an audio track that my microphone is plugged in to; I also go to "System Preferences" and click on "Sound" and make sure that my audio interface is selected for the input method.  Then, I open up Quicktime and select "New Movie Recording".  Finally, I open up my software for my interface and set it up for "loopback"...there's a picture below.
If you look at the bottom of the interface, you'll see it says "DAW 1: Loop Back 1" and "DAW 2: Loop Back 2".  Ideally, this means that whenever I start recording in Quicktime, all of the sounds that I am making in Logic (the piano playing and the singing) will loop back into the computer and be recorded by Quicktime.  This does actually happen, but my question is this:
I've noticed that the sound quality of software instruments is drastically reduced once they have been recorded by Quicktime (or iMovie) and I play the movie back.  Actual audio files, like me singing or playing a real instrument aren't really affected, but for some reason the software instruments sound very thin once I listen to the audio in the movie.  Why is this happening?  Is there a way to preserve the audio quality to be the same during video playback as it is when I am playing the instruments live in Logic?

Interesting and convoluted way to get something done.. from what you're describing it almost sounds like the software instruments are somehow getting recorded twice but slightly out of phase.
When you record your singing are you monitoring through headphones or speakers?

  • MBP Display flicks off while using Logic Pro and external monitor

    Hi there
I have the MBP conected to my external 19" monitor. While running Logic Pro 7.2 the MBP will, for no apparent reason, turn its diplay off and logic will crash. The external monitor will still be on. And I can still move the mouse onto this monitor.
I then have to hold down the start button to force the machine to restart. This only started to happen after 3 months, but now it happens twice a week or so.
    Anyone else experiencing similar problems?

  • Issue using logic pro with bfd 2.0 - not enough RAM?

Right, I posted a little while ago when I first installed BFD 2 on my mac pro, and was having problems whenever I tried to use any effects (either in Logic itself or in the BFD 2 program) whilst using BFD 2. What I think I forgot to mention was I was trying to do different processing on different "areas" of the drum kit, and I wanted to use the Logic effects, so I had a number of tracks with BFD 2 loaded as the instrument.
Well, I phoned a local Apple-certified shop to ask for advice on this, as nothing I'd tried had fixed the issue. The guy suggested I try a clean install of the OS and Logic and BFD 2, to see if that fixed the issue. I* have done this, and logic now works with BFD 2 and effects when I have just one BFD 2 tracks, but as soon as I add another and program some MIDI notes into the 2nd instance, even just a bar or two, then play the whole song, there is a large amount of digital noise. Now, on my mac pro, i only have one HDD - the system disk - and 4 gb ram. I had just now come to the conclusion that, with the minimum spec for Logic being 1GB, and for BFD 2 being 1GB, with the OS running as well it's actually likely the system is short of RAM. But now I see that it can also be an issue if your Logic project is stored on your system disk.
So I'm thinking of getting both an extra, internal (SATA) HDD, and an extra 8GB RAM at least. Is this likely to solve the issue? I'm not currently using an interface with it, and as I say, with just one BFD 2 track, it's fine, the issue is caused when I try to add more BFD 2 tracks. Obviously, without an interface, I am unable to try recording audio to see if there is an issue with that too.

You also need to upgrade to the latest version of BFD2. There were many fixes. You should also install BFD2 samples on another hard drive. The 4 gigs of memory you have is more than enough. Your main problem is probably not installing the samples of a separate drive. Hope this helps. BFD2 is an incredible program once you have it set up properly. As noted previously switching from 24 bit to 16 bits will help also.

  • Using iMovie to create movies for an iWeb site

    Hi, all:
Relative Mac noob; please be kind. I think I'm going to answer my own question, anyway, but I thought I'd ask... and I'll cross-post in the iWeb section, too.
I am planning to add some movies to my site. I've done the preliminary layout work, and just need to edit and upload the video.
Up to now, I have always used, and am comfortable with, iMovie HD 6. I've never used iMovie '08, even though I installed the iLife '08 upgrade two months ago.
Which version of iMovie - '08 or HD 6 - is better suited to the task of editing digital video that will be added to an iWeb site? One source file is a QuickTime movie I've already got; the rest of the video I'll be shooting in the coming week or so.
I think that the older version of iMovie is going to suit me better, 1) b/c I already know it and 2) it has more powerful editing capabilities, no?
    Thanks,
    Bill from CT

Which version of iMovie - '08 or HD 6 - is better suited to the task of editing digital video that will be added to an iWeb site?
As always, use the editor that has the features needed for the project.

  • Pros and cons of quicktime movie or YouTube on your website?

    Hello All,
I want to add a short movie to my website and I have watched the tutorials on adding a quicktime movie and a YouTube movie to your website.
However, they didn't say what the pros and cons were. Is it better to add a quicktime movie to your site or a link to YouTube.
How easy or hard is it to add a link to Vimeo?
Thanks for all your help and suggestions.
    Mike

    Hi Michael,
The pros of hosting the movie yourself on your .me website is that you have control over the content in your movie; if you put copyrighted music in your video and upload it to youtube and they recognize it (and they usually do) no one will be able to view the video on youtube without being logged in to youtube as you.
The cons are that if you upload movies to iweb, you'll be using some bandwidth every time someone watches it, and there is a limit to what is include with the mobile me subscription.
Adding a youtube video embedded in your site is easy. Just use the HTML snippet (or did they update one just for you tube?) and copy the "embed" information from the file on you tube, and paste it in the html window. easy as pie.
I don't know anything about "Vimeo" but any links are easy if you're leaving your site and sending a clicker to the page with what you want to show. Embedding is easy if they give you embed tools at the site you want to borrow from (like youtube does).

  • Is anybody else getting external MIDI clock tempo issues using Logic Pro 9 and OSX Lion 10.7.5?

I am having really serious tempo issues when sending midi clock to any external device - The tempo wavers and alternates around 5 bpm above and below the tempo set, and to be frank is totally unuasable when trying to clock arps from hardware synths.
I have the problem both with Logic and Ableton LE, as well as through both my MOTU Ultralite and Focusrite Liquid Sapphire 56 interfaces. I am therefore presuming this is a MIDI issue with the actual computer (MacBook pro, bought new last september).
I moved to Mac from PC, so I'm not totally up to scratch with the Mac architecture yet - can anybody shed any light on why this is happening? It's driving me mad!

    Pancenter,
Yes.. I do see the occasional minor variations much like yourself when I sync up to my Oasys or more usually the Motif... to a fair sized and complicated project,,. Maybe +/- 1.. or on rare occasions +/- 2 bpm... but nothing close to the OP's +/- 5 bpm experiences...
It actually got better for me when I installed 10.8.x... along with the newest Motu drivers.. and in fact I can't remember the last time I had any unworkable issues with syncing though admittedly I haven't done that much syncing recently.
I do have a project coming up in the next 10 days..  that will require me to use the Oasys synced to Logic so I'll make a note of any issues i have and post back if any occur.
As an aside, I have recently been doing a lot of work with iPad Instruments and Arp Apps and Logic... and the sync as been rock solid over USB...

  • Problems Using QuickTime Pro on Windows to Compress Movies for E-mailing

I have a windows system but just installed QuickTime Pro because I understood it would allow compression of movies (home movie segments of no more than 5 minutes) to facilitate e-mailing them. QuickTime instructions describing easy use of a "Share" feature seem geared to the MAC operating system--I have no such option. I've tried opening my movie using Quicktime, going to File, exporting (Movie to Quicktime Movie) with default settings (H.264 compression, quality high, key frame rate 24, etc., audio at format integer, sample rate 11.024 khz, etc.) and prepare for internet streaming (fast start). The movie goes into my Quick Time movie files without much compression--going from an AVI file of 60.4 MB to a quicktime movie of 40.8 MB. This is much larger than the quicktime movies emailed to me of longer duration which were only a few MB. Any help for a novice who at this point only wants to compress and email movies? Thanks.

That sounds like the sound is being exported in
uncompressed format. Suggest you open one of these
filesw and use MovieInfo in the Windows menu to see
what format is being used for the sound. If it is
listed as uncompressed or raw or PCM, you may want to
try using mpeg-4 sound (aac or advance audio
    compression).
Thanks much. I tried saving the file using the AAC option (rather than Linear PCM) and that got it down only slightly (from 40.8 to 40.5 MB). I'll just keep experimenting.

  • Does anyone know if apple's one-to-one program would be a good way to learn how to use logic pro or am I better off going to school to learn audio engineering or something?

Of course going to school would be a good option, but I want to know if one-to-one is also a good way to learn how to use logic pro. Has anyone been through the one-to-one program for logic pro and can say that they learned how to use logic pro well because of it?

For sure, one to one training, if given by a tutor who is capable, will hand you the means to build up self-confidence  and will therefore let you operate the hard/software in an intelligent manner, instead of going for the trial and error method which has its pro's and con's too. Once you've passed this beginners phase you will make your own decisions intelligently and then you will also start to get experience and learn even from your mistakes. Something like that in theory and the rest is up to you!
    Have a nice day

  • Is it OK to install both Logic Pro and Logic Express on my computer?

Is it OK to install both Logic Pro and Logic Express on my computer?
I use Logic to perform live, but i only have 2 USB drives on my computer, and i use them during my performances, one for my keyboard, and one for my audio interface...........therefore, i dont have room to plug in the "node key" in order to use Logic Pro.
So is it ok for me to have Logic Express installed, too?? This way, I dont need to plug in the "node key" (or whatever it's called).
I know i can buy a USB hub, but i cant afford one right now.
    Thanks, daddies!

I installed both on my PB 12" - no problem at all

  • Logic Pro and Basic Audio Units

Is anyone else having an issue with Logic Pro 9.1.8 and using legacy/basic audio unit effects located in the Audio Units > Apple location?  It seems as though anytime I try to use an AU* type plugin with my project the EQ freezes like it did before the 9.1.8 update was applied.  I've noticed the issue occuring when I have 8+ tracks with midi, samples, and Apple Loops in the project.  The HD and CPU meters are very low (1-2 bars) and it just hangs.  I don't think track count or track type has anything to do with this issue as my last project had ~24 tracks and did fine up until I added in AULowpass and that is when I started having problems with the EQ.

This is because you have Punch on the fly enabled under Options (top menu)>Audio>Punch on the Fly.... signified by the letter P instead of the letter R

  • I am using logic pro x and do not know how to fade a track at the end of a song or change the volume in a portion of the track.

I am using Logic Pro X. I do not know how to fade the volume at the end of a song or raise / lower the volume in an area of the track. I also have a loud instand volume blip in a portion of a track that I would like to lower or eliminate.

Completely inappropriate, and they all also not help with volume adjustments. Fades will only apply to Audio Regions in the Tracks area: they will not fade out the complete mix unless you first Bounce it, add that to the Tracks area, apply the Fades with the Fade tool, then Bounce in Place (Again).
Much much better to make use of Track automation to take care of Volume adjustments, and to Fade out the end of the song by applying Track Automation to the Output Channel

Who do you think I am? Santa Claus?
What you need is not a mixer, but an audio interface with at least 4 mic inputs. There is a lot of choice there, but you should indicate a budget. You can go from, say, € 300 to € thousands, if you want.
    Roland UA 1010
    Focusrite Scarlett 18i8
However, there are other options (like multi-out mixer plus multi in interface, or standalone mic preamps plus interface with 4 inputs, etc). I have little experience using these however so I really cannot say much about which one(s) to get. The two mentioned above both have four mic preamps, but they are by no means the only way to do it.
The cheapest solution I can think of is to get a second 1204USB, plug it in, and in OS X create an Aggregate device (=the two are being merged into 'one virtual' interface with two discrete stereo (= four discrete mono) inputs. Disadvantage: you keep the same (limited) soundquality of the 16 bits convertors. Getting any of the interfaces mentioned earlier will also mean you'll make the significant step up from 16 to 24 bits sound.

Anyone know of any issues with using Logic Pro music software with Mountain lion OS..

At least Logic Pro 9 and Logic Pro X work correctly in Mountain Lion. Furthermore, Logic Pro X requires the latest OS X Mountain Lion version

    I
got your message about making sure to use the machine specific disk that came with my machine. Unfortunately, Apple no longer sells Tiger replacement disks. I've got a couple of bids out on ebay, and will update when I have news to add to this post.
Thank you for your help, Frank!
To be clear you called the 800 number and explained what the situation was, old machine and lost the original DVD's?
Just checking because if you just called and tried to buy the DVD's they might tell you they no longer sell them but you aren't really trying to buy them your trying to replace the ones that are missing.
Ebay may work but there is a certain specificity to the DVD's required which, even if they seem right, might not work.
Good luck either way. If you get a chance when you get the DVD's I'd be interested in hearing how it all works out.

  • Keep getting message pop up "Error reading/writing file  "com.apple.logic.pro.cs": Logical end-of-file reached during read operation," and "The Preferences are not loaded completely. Save them to "com.apple.logic.pro.cs" anyway?" Using Logic pro 8. ???

Logic froze while I was working on something so I forced quit.  Now every time I open LOGIC a message pops up that says:
    "Error reading/writing file
    “com.apple.logic.pro.cs”:
Logical end-of-file reached during read operation."
The only button option is cancel so I press it and another message appears that says:
"The Preferences are not loaded completely.
Do not save them, as you would overwrite the Preferences file with incomplete data."
Then when i close logic a box appears saying:
"The Preferences are not loaded completely.
    Save them to "com.apple.logic.pro.cs" anyway?"
There are 3 button options to press; ok, cancel or dont save.
I press "don’t save" cuz I don't want to ruin anything.
I found a discussion located here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/9564253#9564253 that says if I delete the file "com.apple.logic.pro.cs" it will resolve the problem.  If I do this will I loose or mess anything up at all, automation, saved channel strips customizations, saved effects, synth, or ultrabeat customizations etc? Or especially will I loose any work I've done?  I have hundreds pieces of music files I've created.  I'm scared to mess anything up with all the hours and months of work I've done.  Is there anyway to fix this without loosing anything?  I'm using Logic Pro 8.
    Thank you

You can safely delete this file - its the preference file for control surface settings - you haven't said whether you're actually using a control surface or not, if so, you will have to set it up again. A new file will be created when you fire Logic up again, but of course it will contain default settings. If you have a complicated control surface setup, remember to keep a backup copy somewhere in case any future problems arise.
Other than that, you really have nothing to be scared about - hopefully your problem is as simple as that and there isn't an underlying problem (a corrupt hard drive, for example). You seem concerned about losing work, so I guess you want to think about backing that up on a regular basis too. If you're saving your projects to your system drive, do get an external one for this. And also check that you have plent of free space on your system drive - you need to keep about a quarter or third of it free for your OS and programs to run properly (some temporarily stored files can be quite large).
