Audio issues in iMovie 11

I have a real problem.  I've added background music to a project.  I was able to get in the timeline and adjust the audio levels just fine in the first piece of music.  But it wasn't long enough, and when I added a second piece of music, the only place i can adjust the audio level is in the inspector.  In other words, it won't let me get into the audio track in the timeline and make individual adjustments as I was able to do in the first song I added.
Any ideas?
I'm running version 9.0.8
Many thanks,
Phil Rogers

Hi Phil,
I tried out what you said your problem was and realized that I had the same issue when I tried to have two sound tracks on the same project. I messed around with it for a bit trying different things a discovered that if you have the second track on the project like this
instead of like this
You can use the slider to adjust the volume. To do this you just drag and drop the sound track over the video clips instead of the background.
Hope this helped.

  • Some Audio Issues with Imovie 09

    hey guys,
when i make my videos with imovie, i mute the sound of the video clip and synchronize the video to music. I dont want the audio from the actual clip to play.
When i export the video (i select the 'export using quicktime') and watch it in quicktime, there are random bits of audio from the clips (sometimes not even the same clip). It is rather annoying because it really takes away from the intensity of the video.
I checked through the video, and all the clips that have sound (when watching in quicktime) are indeed muted. when i play the video in IMOVIE there is no random sound but when i play the video in QUICKTIME (the exported video) there are random bits of sound.
Anyone know how to eliminate this?
    thanks

I really don't know, but I suspect it is tricky to eliminate frames or double frames and keep the sound synched. When you stick to a preset, you are eliminating or doubling an integer number of frames. When you do a number like 39%, you have to approximate to achieve that percentage while still being constrained to full frames.. This leads to problems with the synch.
In Final Cut Pro, you could do this with great flexibility, but it requires a great deal of effort to learn how to use all that flexibility. In iMovie, they provided some sophisticated features, but made the controls pretty vanilla, so they work for the average user. I think in this case, they imply a greater level of flexibility (through the speed slider) than they can deliver.
Just my opinion. Maybe someone knows the real reason.

  • *** is up with the audio problem in iMovie '11?

Okay.  This is ridiculous.  What is the deal with the audio issues in iMovie '11?  I am working on a short film. I insert audio files for streets sounds, door sounds, etc.  some work, some don't.  I converted .wav files to .aif files.  Still nothing.  I updated my OS and updated my iMovie to the latest versions.  Still nothing.  Why are the sounds there one second then gone a minute later?

    Great.
Gkad you got it figured out.

iMovie 11  audio issues. Fine in timeline, but when rendering to iTunes or Media Browser, audio from certain portions of movie files are heard in places where it shouldn't be !
I have created a project where I have a montage of photos and video clips edited together with music under. Some audio portions of the video files are being muted in some areas and those portions are being heard in another part of the project. This is not for all video clips only certain ones.
The project plays fine in the timeline, but when I render the project thru iTunes or Media Browser, this is when the project goes corrupt.
I tried detaching the Audio from the video clips and this somewhat worked, but the original problem still exists with certain audio still being heard where it's not supposed to be.

    I have a fix - or rather, a workaround.
WARNING: It is lengthy, but still far better than starting a new project from scratch.
I had this same issue and none of my transitions/clips were at custom speeds, nor did I have anything else weird going on. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do within iMovie to fix this, at least there wasn't for me. iMovie is BY FAR the buggiest software I have ever used and if you haven't already spent hours slaving away on a project, you are so much better off using just about anything else to edit your video.
...But let's assume you have already spent many hours working on your project and you don't want to start all over. Well then, you have at least one option.
It's a pain in the neck, but it's infinitely better than restarting your project from scratch.
    This will require:
A software called Soundflower (which is free) and some kind of audio editing software (I use Logic, but really any should work).
1.) You're going to need to export your video with the messed up audio. Typically if you're audio is messing up, you're video is at least usually working just fine (at least it always does for me).
2.) You're going to need to open that video in your audio software and import only the audio. If your software doesn't give you this option, then you're going to need to record the audio from your video using the audio software and Soundflower. You can find tutorials on how to do this, but it's honestly pretty straightforward once you start playing around with you Mac's audio I/O settings. Remember to have your computer's volume all the way up when doing this.
3.) Watch/listen to your video and make notes of where the audio errors occur. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND writing down times too,  as they will be extremely helpful later.
4.) Now were going to rip some working audio from the iMovie project itself. Go back into your iMovie project and only play back audio while in the edit window for this step. Do NOT play your project back in full screen.
This part is key: if you try to play back your project from the beginning the audio will usually still mess up. So, what you're gonna have to do is go back on your edit window timeline right before these errors occur and play that specific clip back while recording this working audio with Soundflower and your audio software. Essentially we're only recording the parts of the audio where these errors occur, so try to do this in order if you can. Try to leave several seconds of audio in before the error - that way we can use it as reference when we construct our new audio track.
5.) Now in your audio software you should have your original error-filled audio track and the new clips that we just captured. This part can be painstaking if you're not familiar with audio editing softwares, but as you'll learn, it's really not that hard.
You're going to look at your original audio track and compare it to your new working audio clips. You should be able to notice where those new clips are supposed to go by looking at the identical (or close to identical) waveform shapes in your original audio track. The two should correspond with one another. If you don't understand what I mean right now, you will when you start playing around with the audio. This is why marking times is very important.
Take your new clips and split them up if you haven't already, that way you can drag them around and edit them separately from one another. Essentially your going to line these new clips up with original and then replace the original parts with new ones.
We need to get this as precise as possible, so start off by getting them as close as you can with your naked eye, and then use a zoom tool to zoom in as much as possible so that you can get them lined up PERFECTLY, or at least extremely close. In some softwares you can just drag these new clips on top of the old track, but most of the time you will need to actually cut out the old piece and replace it with the new one. In doing this, zoom in and make sure that you are NOT cutting out a bigger space than your new clip will fill - otherwise you will have small gaps in your audio.
VERY IMPORTANT: Also make sure that this new audio track starts at the EXACT SAME time as your original - otherwise your new audio will be out of sync.
I know this part can really suck if you're not used to audio editing, but at this point, there is little other choice.
6.) Once you are done with this, export your newly pieced together audio track.
7.) Now open iMovie and create a NEW project. Re-import the video that you exported earlier that has the messed up audio. This might take a while, so just be patient.
8.) Then right click the clip and select "Detach Audio". This will do just that - allowing you to edit the audio separately from the video. Now delete this audio.
9.) Now, import the new, perfect audio track that we just made and make sure that it starts at the start of the project. Make sure it's in sync and that everything works.
Now just export your new video with the working audio and you should be done. Since we have given iMovie the audio with no editing actually being done in iMovie, it does not have to generate its own audio now and you should have absolutely no errors now - unless there is some that you forgot to take out earlier.
    YOU'RE FINALLY DONE!!!
I know this entire process *****, but if you're that far into your project, there is little else that you can do. Now you've learned your lesson:
    DON'T USE IMOVIE EVER AGAIN.
    I hope this helped!

  • Audio video sync issues with iMovie 11

Hi: I've been using Roxio Video Capture software to convert VHS tapes to digital (quiktime) movies in preparation for saving them on DVDs. Most of my clips seem to have synchronization issues and I am at a loss as to how to fix them. Most of the historical blogs and forums get either very technical or simply do not work for me. I am far from being expert at using iMovie or performing editing tasks so I could use specific expert help with this problem. So far I have learned how to detach the audio, but am at a loss as to what to do with it once I detach it

    Hi socalhkc!
I have a couple of articles that might be able to help you adjust the audio in your iMovie project:
iMovie '11: Set the beginning and end of a sound or music clip
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2258
iMovie '11: Extend a video clip’s audio over the next clip

  • IMovie for iphone 4 audio issues

I'm noticing 2 serious audio issues:
    1) after adding some music from my song library to a clip of my wife talking, I can barely hear her. iMovie is supposed to reduce the volume of the song. Well, it doesn't look like it's doing it properly--the volume of the music is WAY too loud.
    2) when I add a 2nd clip of her talking, the audio on this clip disappears entirely. All I hear is the song. Even after removing the song from the timeline, the audio of the clip is still missing. I can't believe the imovie team never noticed this bug.

I believe when you add a Video clip to a Project that contains a Music track, the Audio for the Video track is muted. Simply enable it via the "Clips Settings".
    Try this:
Double tap the Video Clip to bring up the "Clips Settings" window.
Tap the ON / OFF toggle to turn the Audio ON for your video track.

  • IMovie share to file - audio issues

I'm trying to share an iMovie video clip to file and the exported file has audio issues - a sort of flapping sound.  The sound is fine when I'm in iMovie.  I've tried different video qualities and saving it to different places.  Any ideas on what the problem is?

I am also having a similar issue.  The music is perfect in iMovie, however once I share to Theatre or iTunes, the music is distorted.  Could it have something to do with the audio volume?  Has anyone experienced this?
    edit:  I have iMovie 10.0.3

  • Audio Syncing Issue with iMovie 10.0.1

As was the case with iMovie 9, there is an issue with the audio syncing properly to the video when uploaded to YouTube. I am wondering if anyone knows of the workaround for the same issue with iMovie 10 (Mavericks)?
    Thanks!

The bar codes are generated from an online service and are downloaded as vector art in the form of EPS files.I am opening the file in Illustrator after downloading the EPS file. I am not scaling it in any way, it just opens in Illustrator "wrong". "Placing" the file creates the same distorted effect. The EPS file looks fine if I view it in Preview or open it in Photoshop, but I need to use it as vector art.

  • IMovie 9 Audio Issues

iMovie 9; I have a 17-minute video with lots of edits, inserts, cutaways, still photos, music tracks, etc. Lots of tweaking. I opened the project for some final edits and now most of the b-roll cutaways have full volume audio, even though I've reduced the slider for those tracks to zero and they've worked in the past. Now they are at full volume even though the sliders remain at zero. I've tried detaching the audio, deleting the audio once detached, re-adjusting the audio slider and they still play back at 100%. Even tried going up to 200%, but it seems the Inspector dialog box has no bearing on those b-roll cutaway scenes.
Really frustrating since everything was fine before. Any ideas out there?
BTW I had other earlier issues with some audio tracks falling out of sync with the underlying video, but found the fix for that. Among other things, the Apple store geek suggested I uninstall iMovie 9 and then reinstall it along with all the updates. I did do that, plus I moved all video files to an external hard drive. Now the above problem lingers. Help! please?

I've been seeing a similar problem using iMovie '11 (version 9.0.4). I first noticed the problem when recently editing a wedding video (I was still on Snow Leopard at the time, but now on Lion). I don't recall seeing the problem on earlier projects, and am not sure what has triggered it. I didn't use speed changes.
I inserted music tracks on parts of the video and adjusted the volume on the main video track (the ambient audio) to zero. However, both audio tracks played back at their original volume (100%). My solution was to exit the project by going back to Project Library view, then clicking on (but not opening) another project. When returning to the wedding project all audio levels were OK, that is, they were playing at the levels I had set. So, the original audio was muted and only the added music could be heard. All audio fades also worked OK, where I had set them on the original audio.
Each time I made a volume change within the project I had to go through the same process in order to silence the original audio, that is, moving backwards and forwards between the Project Library view and Edit view after clicking on another project.
I recently upgraded my MacBook Pro (early 2009) to Lion (Mac OS X 10.7.2) but haven't tested this issue on iMovie '11 as yet while running Lion.

  • Missing Audio / Sound in imovie with .AVI files when imported from iphoto

fortunately i don't need this answered, eventually figured it out my self, just thought it would be helpful to share the solution to this problem as I'm sure others have experienced it. The problem makes more sense when explained chronologically.
My wife has a Casio digital camera, and had recorded many Movies on it, they all sat in iPhoto all worked fine until i upgraded to Quicktime 7.5, then the audio disappeared. i tried in vain to fix (reinstalled QT 7.5, removed plugins, reinstalled etc.), but to no avail, so i left it - this was all under Tiger, i decided I'd upgrade to Leopard and see if the problem went away.
Before upgrading to Leopard i got iLife 08, when i first launched iMovie08 it pulled in all the movies from iPhoto, but they too had no sound.
Then i upgraded to Leopard, now the quicktime missing audio issue got fixed, so i could hear the audio again when launching quicktime via iPhoto (turns out the issue was with how quicktime was handling adaptive PCM audio stream) - i expected all would be fine in iMovie... but it wasnt.
after much experimentation i realised that i had to force iMovie to re-import all the video from iPhoto, this fixed the issue, but with no obvious way to do this, this is what i did:
    - opened finder, navigated to iphoto library, right click and chose 'show package contents'
    - navigated to the data folder and did a search on this folder only for all movie files (when imovie had originally converted iPhoto movie files into thumbnails it dropped all the thumb size movie files in this folder)
    - deleted all the movie files from the Data folder, making sure not to delete the movie files in any other folders & emptied trash
    - launched imovie, now all the iphoto movies were missing.
    - re-launch iPhoto, whilst holding down shift, option + command keys
    - checked 'rebuild the iphoto library database' only, once done, closed iphoto
    - re-launched imovie, this forced it to re-import all the movies from iphoto
... and then the sound was back.
    FYI
    this worked when using...
    OS 10.5.4
    QT 7.5
    iMovie 7.1.4
    iPhoto 7.1.4

    Hi MGW,
I do not no how things are handled when using HDV and technical documentation is hard to find on this topic of how photo are handled using HDV but in iMovie and most non HDV video editing software the picture is always 72ppi regardless of what is was/is on the outside and the images that appear the worst are the ones with less.
On a side note I don't use iPhoto because of all the superfluous files and thumbnails it creates and it disorganises my photos according to criteria that is completely irrelevant to me. I have had these thumbnails pop up in the browser in the past primarily with any photos that existed in the library prior to any updates. With what I have been working on as of late can understand how and why this could happen.
If you scroll through the media browser dose it appear that the library you are working with duplicates itself somewhere along the line or do you see double images side by side?
What are you machine specs and please include you screen/display size and graphics card information as this is the most relevant information at this point with what you are doing.

  • More Audio issues...

Along with the sounds / tones truncating / cutting off, I was listening to some mp3's today and the sound was constantly cutting in and out of stereo mode.  Left ear worked most of the time, right ear worked maybe 1/4th of the time.  Whatever happened to the sound coding in the latest update, it needs to be fixed.

(either AIFF or MP3), the playback slows to a crawl,
the video is severely stuttery and the audio is

    same issue w/slowness and distortion.
If I import the audioc clips singly, they play and
sync well with the video to a point, but there's a
threshhold at which the playback begins to degrade

Very frustrating. Who can point me to some likely

OK - here's an update. I dumped my caches, fixed permissions, made changes to QT settings and reset the MIDI settings and the result? The audio is now running fine BUT the video is now not running (or at least ex-treme-ly sl-ooooooow-ly).
Any thoughts folks? I'd be eager to hear your input!

  • Audio issues after exporting

I've made a 40 minute video of my friends' wedding, which plays beautifully in iMovie, but when I export it, there are some audio issues. I've read other forums and detached all audio before exporting and still the same result.
    1) Part of the opening sequence has a piece of audio (from another part of the video) that runs with some slow motion clips of bride and groom. When I export, the warped, slowed down original audio can be heard in the background. I've tried everything - detach audio and delete the offending piece of original audio to reducing the volume level of the original audio to 0. It's still there after exporting!!!
    2) Maybe as a result of the above, not sure, but once exported, the whole video audio is out of sync by a few seconds. Went back and checked the project and it's all good with all the audio lining up with the clips, but export and it's out of whack
My friends are hounding me to see the video and I keep stalling, quoting some 'technical issues'.
    Please help!

Just wanted to let you all know you've saved my sanity by posting on this board. Your solution - while not what I would have guessed in a million years was the problem source - fixed my video. I can't believe it was so simple! Now, if I could only get the hour(s) back where I tried to find the audio track I 'hadn't muted'...

  • Bootcamp 3.1 and imac windows 7 64bit update not installing. Audio issues!

After many days of work getting the windows 7 working in bootcamp in my imac 27 (still with audio issues) I eagerly awaited the bootcamp update and imac updates.
    Neither will install.
Then I find that according to tech support as of now I have to reinstall Windows 7 again for the updates to work!
It took me 5 full 8 hours days to get all my scientific programs installed and working, now I find I can't even simply update the drivers I need. I don't want to reinstall.
    My only issues are audio.
    Here they are:
    1) The headset jack works fine on the Mac side, but in Windows 7, it causes the i7 intel CPU to go crazy. There is no CPU spike on the mac side.
    2) The headset jack in the imac is a trrs jack. The same as in the iphone, a tri-band jack that has three bands, two audio out channels and one mic in channel. A trrs headset works fine on the mac side with using the headset mic (as in iphone) rather than the built in mic. (this provides much better quality for sound recording). I don't want to use a usb mike.
In Windows 7 the mic part of the trrs headset does not work.
    3) In Windows 7 when going into audio devices recording, no audio mixer shows up, so when I do video or audio screen capture the only way to capture the sound is through the speakers and then back through the imac built in mic, rather than directly through the unit. (terrible sound quality) On the mac side the mixer element works fine.
Now I find from other imac users that even the new updates for the imac on windows 7 don't address and fix the audio issues. I am sure not going to go through 5 more days work only to find the audio issues still don't work.
I need these audio aspects to work properly though!
I have tried to get drivers for the cirrus logic audio card, but guess what there are none available and cirrus logic doesn't even recognize the board or offer drivers.
I have many windows programs I must have for my scientific research!I bought the top of the line Imac with all the bells and whistles because Apple promised that the machine could run Windows 7 in bootcamp natively!
It doesn't. This has been a nightmare of problems.
Is Apple going to step up to the plate and make good on their promises?
Does any one have a fix for any of the audio issues, or know how to install the new drivers without a complete reinstall of Windows?
Installing a few sound drivers and software should not require a complete reinstall. Getting the proper drivers for the headset jack audio in and audio out jack should be the most basic of fixes. Making the audio mixer work should be elementary.
If you are an Apple tech person or an Apple user that can help on these issues, please do!
    Thanks, Dr. Duke
    An American profesor in Europe.
PS I will post this under Imac windows 7 updates without a reinstall and under
    imac Sound issues.

On another thread a few people have responded saying that their imac has the same situation, the cpu is going crazy and the imac gets hot with headphones or speakers plugged in. But this doesn't happen in the mac side.
If you have an late 2009 imac and don't have these audio issues, let us hear from you. If you don't, lay out the problem here.
Here is my last two cents in to the inquiry.
Not only does the cpu run crazy but the imac 27 gets very, very hot. Since I unplugged the headphones, it runs much, much cooler.
Certainly, some Mac engineers should take care of this problem, it seems it is universal on all the imac 27's and from what I gather, the smaller screened cousins too.
Also, we certainly want a stereo mix option for audio in or out, or what is called "what you hear" or wave out. Imac is supposed to be much geared to multimedia apps.
Finally, the mic jack part of the trrs set up MUST be fixed! A lot of manufacturers are going to headset combo jacks as they call them, mic in and stereo out on the same tribanded plug. But, the old single jack for mic in and single jack for stereo out are two tiny parts of the hardware and super inexpensive for the manufacturer. Why in the **** to go to the "advanced" triplug if the **** thing doesn't work.
Mac has a great reputation. I hope they remedy these problems right away.
Anyone whose imac 27 or 24 whose headset plug is working correctly. Let us know! I don't think anyone's is, but I think that few people understand that their cpu is running so much faster with the plug in, plus few even understand the combo jack and the triband, or trrs audio jack! Out of 4 audio technicians I talked to, not one of them knew what a trrs jack was or that you even have a mic in jack as part of the headset jack!
When I told one senior that it worked on the Mac side, he didn't believe for a while, thought my sound might be recorded from the onboard mic, but I proved it to him by tapping iaudibly on my iphone mic headset and and it showing up in garage band clearly and listening to big difference in audio.
As for a usb audio adapter, I am in a neon light environment and find that those adapters are more sensitive to electrical interference. Besides I want to use the headset jack as it was meant to be used!
    Thats it.
Again, if anyone using an imac 27 and windows 7 64 or 32 doesnt have these problems, let us know! We are all anxious for a fix!
    Best to all!

Have looked at all of the audio settings on the VPN IPC unit, they are correct.
    Any ideas?

Try to sniff the Ethernet traffic during call setup at the CallManager. When Callmanager sends Call Control messages to remote party, it could send wrong IP address or UDP port as an RTP parameters.
Another components could block the traffic are firewalls. How do you have your VPN tunnel built? Do you use Cisco VPN Client? What terminates your VPN traffic at the central location? PIX, VPN3000 or Router? Traffic may go one way without a change, and some protocol FixUp may be triggered for this traffic on the way back. If you have access to firewall logs, check if you have any traffic dropped.
    Good luck,
    Mike
