Audio Issues with MacBook Pro (Late 2008)
I am seeing an occasional issue with my MacBook Pro (Late 2008). The Audio will go out... and instead you will just hear static-like clicking sounds when and audio even happens. For example... when you have the up/down volume notification on... and you change the audio volume.. you hear clicks. Or... when you open up a file that has audio.. you will hear the static-like click when the audio starts to try to play.
The work around per-se is to completely shutdown and turn the notebook back on. A simple restart does not seem to fix it... it looks like the system needs to have a bit of energy drain first. Which... worries me that this is a hardware issue and not a driver issue.
Wondering how many others are seeing this???
I went to and Apple Support Center last week and I asked some questions about audio because my MBP was having troubles too. The tech told me audio issues are very frequent on these machines and sometimes you have to change a part of the soundcard. He also added you have to bring the MBP to a support center if you're having the problem several times - in my case I'm waiting the next "crash" since I had only 2 issues so far... If you're under warranty go for a check up and see if it really needs assistance. Goodbye

Focusrite Saffire 6 USB (1.1)
The Saffire 6 is a audio interface using USB 1.1 to connect microphones to my Macbook. It has 2 inputs and 4 outputs. I've had this unit for years and has worked fine. I realized today that I haven't used it since upgrading to 10.10 (Yosemite) and wasn't able to get it working. When I try to set it within Sound Preferences, all devices, In and Out, go blank, then come back constantly. It will even change Built-In Mic to "Unknown".
The Saffire website (http://global.focusrite.com/usb-audio-interfaces/saffire-6-usb/downloads) lists two different driver choices to use, but one is labeled specifically for 10.8.5. The other just says "Mac". I'm certain my device is USB 1.1. If it were 2.0, I wouldn't need a driver. According to the website, I should use the 2.9 version.
How can I check to see if all previous driver installations are clear?
Is there anything I can check to make this thing work? The Focusrite website (http://us.focusrite.com/answerbase/are-focusrite-products-compatible-with-osx-yo semite) says that the Saffire 6 USB is compatible with Yosemite.
I've emailed Focusrite and I'm hoping between them and this forum, I can get this working again.
Thanks!!I've spoken to Focusrite. They had me try a number of things. I tried some of my own things.
Different USB cable
Deleted VodBurner device
Repaired Permissions
Installed/Uninstalled 3ivx codec
Reset PRAM
Performed Safeboot
Removed Startup items
Growl, Sizeup, Crossover CD Helper, Dropbox
Disable MagicPrefs from Autostart
Still not able to get it to work. The device will work on an XP computer but I don't have another Mac to try it out on. Any suggestions? -
Blue tooth issues with macbook pro late 2011
I purchased the new beats pill and havinng issues with connectivity with macbook pro. My Iphone works well. Any suggestions
I have a similar issue. Have you had any luck with a fix, yet? I have a Samsung sound bar, and my Ipad and Iphone both connect with no issues. The playback is uninterrupted with fine sound quality. My 2011 13" Macbook Pro connects, however playback often sounds like a scratched CD. Last year I called both, Samsung and Apple, and when all was said and done it was recommended that I bring the then brand new sound bar and my Macbook to an Apple Store. Any suggestions I are appreciated.

FireWire Audio Heat Problem (Macbook Pro, Late 2008) VIDEO proof
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYHnX3CGUoo
After a lot of hours of trying to figure out WHY my macbook pro heats up (a lot) when i connect my newly bought Apogee Duet firewire audio interface, i found out that actually what was happening is that there are CPU spikes of extremely short period (so short that Activity Monitor and iStat could not catch) constantly spiking the CPU frequency from 1596Mhz (Idle) to 2572Mhz (Maximum). Apart from the frequency spike there is also a VOLTAGE spike from 1.0v to 1.15.
I know that this is normal due to speedstep technologies and such BUT the rapid spiking and alterations of frequency and voltage ALWAYS happening when i have my Firewire audio plugged is not normal to me. There is nothing else running, everything's idle and i only plug the firewire interface.
Also this is not happening when i restrict OSX from loading AppleFWAudio.kext (either by deleting, moving, renaming it). I connect the firewire audio interface, the leds are illuminating but no heat problem (thats to show you that is not because the interface is self-powered)
Whats going on seems to be similar with the problems occurred after Mac Pro Audio Update to users that was using FW audio devices. They were hearing a sine noise coming from their macpro and propably that was because the same thing was happening. Constant spikes of voltage to the CPU. I dont have a macpro thought so i cant apply the update Apple released for that issue.
Also, my macbook is using Lucent / Agere (LSI) firewire chipset (the particular and known revision 6) but i dont think that this is the cause since Apogee didnt have any problems with the chipset
Info: The app im using to monitor the Frequency and Voltage is CoolBook, can be found here: http://www.coolbook.se/CoolBook.htmlFirewire Audio disconnected / or AppleFWAudio.kext unloaded = Idle temp arround 50 celcius (iStat)
Firewire Audio Connected with AppleFWAudio.kext loaded = Idle temp arround 60 celcius (iStat)
If theres a possibility that this is due to bus powered firewire device (cause i have an external FW hard drive that is self-powered and temps are not rising when i connect it) then AppleFWAudio.kext maybe manages something with bus powered firewire.
Maybe when i have the interface connected but the kext not loaded the mA sucked by the interface are too little for causing a temp rise but by the time the kext is loaded and the interface is converting audio the mA required tops up so the temp rise comes from the mA load on the firewire bus and not the cpu itself.
*Even if that's the case, the rapid spikes of throttling on the cpu by the time the Firewire Audio interface is connected bothers me. This isn't something that should normaly happen on an idling machine.* -
Problems with Macbook Pro (late 2008) display
Hello everyone...
Yesterday I was using my macbook pro, when suddenly one third of the screen became fuzzy (i know, weird!). Then, like 10 minutes later it became normal again....2 minutes later, fuzzy again (same third...) and its been that way since...I thought that with a reboot it would get fixed....maybe an software or a driver glitch....but nope.
I've been searching in forums for something like it, but I got back no answer...maybe one of you have answers for me
I'm posting some pictures of my screen so you can see what I'm talking about...

Alejandro.-The cause is likely a manufacturing flaw of some sort which just took some time to manifest itself. Apple will likely replace the display for you under warranty. If you don't have 3 year Applecare, be sure to contact Apple before your warranty runs out. Once you have reported the problem and gotten a case number to document it, you can arrange for the repair at your convenience.
Good luck! -
Problem looming with MacBook Pro Late 2008?
This morning I had some ominous occurrences with my Mac Book Pro. When I got it out, the battery was quite warm, even though I had turned it off last night before connecting it to the charger. (It's never warm when it's not using the battery.) Then, when I pushed the power button, nothing happened until after several pushes. Eventually it did start up and seems to be working OK, but I'm worried, could this be a sign of a problem? I lost a hard drive a few years and don't want to repeat that trauma. Any ideas? Thanks!

Macbook Pro Late 2008 Boot Issue
Hello All!
So I have an issue i would like to throw into the ring and see if I get any responses I have not thought of yet. Let me give you a quick backstory to my recent macbook adventures.... I will start with a quick prelude story.
Chapter One:
Purchased a used Macbook Pro, Late 2008 2.53ghz, 4gb DDR3 ram with no charger off ebay. And yes, I should know better. But honestly, it only had a cracked screen but still worked perfectly connected to an external monitor and i could not pass on the price of it.
Chapter Two:
After recieving my purchase, I determined that it was just a cracked cover over the LCD screen which is easily replaced, but the backlight was out on the LCD. So i ordered a new LCD. The new LCD did not fix my issue, which then pointed me to a problem on the motherboard. I then sent it out and had it repaired.
Chapter Three:
Upon recieving my newly repaired macbook, I installed a new SSD drive, battery and replaced the screen cover for the newly installed LCD. It looks Fantastic if I do say so myself! I then proceded to install lion and I have a perfect running Macbook Pro for less than 700 bucks after all was said and done.
Chapter Four:
Now, at this point you should know why I bought it... I use it for djing. That is it. There is nothing else on this. No apps, programs, or scripts. It has an updated lion OS on it and my serato itch Djing software. There isnt even any music on it as i store that on an external 3T WD elements drive. (I only installed an 80gb SSD for the OS system). Unfortunately i have had some instances where the Mac Pro has just shut down completely while im spinning! Not good for business!
Chapter Five:
Over the course of the last year I have noticed some things happening. Longer than normal boot times (especially since it has an SSD in it this seems wierd to me) and crashing of the Itch software while trying to analyze music or just not closing itch at all when im done playing a show and having to press and hold the power button to turn off the mac. Now for the kicker... Unbeknowst to me, apparently you cant use a 65W charger on a macbook that requires an 85W charger, this i just recently learned. The charger i was using was a 65W from a white 13 inch macbook 2006. I just recently aquired the 85W charger.
This brings us to the present.....
Here is the issue. I was analyzing my music files using itch, when suddenly & randomly one of the 2 analyzing indicators would just stop analyzing the track it was on... This leaves only one analyzer bar going and the other just stuck where it is (16000 songs will take awhile with only one analyzer going). If i stop analyzing and restart it, it picks up where it left off and continues for a bit and stops again, but its never the same track or same length of time before it stops analyzing. Now I have tried this with both Lion and Snow Leopard (the white macbook 2006 has snow) and it appears to happen with either OS.
So I decided to install Snow on my Mac Pro 2008. For some reason, and I dont know why, it would not let me install snow to the partion I made on the drive. The disc would just keep rebooting the Mac pro over and over again. I know for a fact that snow works because I took the drive out of the white Macbook 2006 and put it into the Mac Pro 2008. Booted right up.
So, I have re-installed itch on lion... Still has the same problem with lion.
I have restored a copy of snow to the partioned hard drive of my Mac Pro 2008 from my white macbook 2006. This seems to be the only way to do this if i want snow on my Mac Pro 2008 since it won't boot Snow from disc or USB. Installed a new copy of itch, still the same problem.
So my question is this.... Is it hardware or software?
And to stop those from putting the obvious, I have done all the PVRAM, SMC etc resets!! I am not some 12yr old trying to make daddys computer work again because i used it like i shouldn't have. Im looking for something besides the obvious!
Sorry, but I felt the entire story needed to be told in order to get the responses I'm looking for....
And thanks for taking the time to read about my issues! Hopefully someone can point me in the direction I need to go to get this to stop doing what it's doing. I will be more than happy to answer any and all questions concerning this issue as best I can.The heat generated may be a function of what you are doing on the Internet. Watching videos will stress the CPU/GPU and create heat and result in faster fan speeds.
First try a SMC and PRAM resets:

Random hard freezing issues, Windows 8 64-bit on Macbook Pro (Late 2008)
Hi,
I recently upgraded to OS X 10.8.3 and got a hold on copy of Windows 8 64-bit. As I'm running on my old trustworthy 15 inch Macbook Pro (Late 2008), my hardware is officially unsupported. Over the years I've had XP, Vista, Win7 32-bit and 64-bit running running on the same machine, and thought I'd give Win8 a chance.
To be able to install Win8 on my unsupported hardware, I tricked the Bootcamp assistant that I was going to install Win7, and after the reboot and start of the Win7 installation, I exited the installer, rebooted, switched DVD to Win8 and did the installation from there. So far so good. For installing the Bootcamp drivers, I followed the instructions in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4894920?tstart=90.
Now, the machine runs just fine with Windows 8, and I've installed some basic third party applications (Firefox, Spotify, Steam). However, I get completely random hard freezes on the machine (sound looping, no other activity whatsoever) during normal use. These can occur 20 minutes after start, or 3-4 hours in. The freezing behavior is very much similar to how my model can behave under overheating conditions (which mostly have occured in past Windows versions while gaming), however overheating doesn't seem to be the issue here (based on simple palpation ).
Have anyone experienced a similar problem, or know something about it? My current idea is that some weird things are going on with the Bootcamp drivers, so unless anyone comes up with a suggestion I might try doing a rollback to the point before I installed the drivers to see what I can make of it.
Thanks!Had a few similar short system freezes, after installing Windows 8 x64 on 13” MacBook Pro Mid-2010 with BootCamp 5.0.5033.
There is a suggestion that DisableDynamicTick may fix the problem: https://discussions.apple.com/message/21565295#21565295. There were similar topics at Microsoft forums: 1, 2, 3. It was said “that this will likely reduce system battery life, so it should be undone when you update your Windows build or if it doesn't resolve your issue”, and that “this problem is resolved in the release versions of Windows 8”.
Another possibility is that there is indeed a buggy driver, within BootCamp 5.0.5033, or a 3rd party, like a wireless network driver in the following case http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-performance/system-fr eeze-randomly-after-installing-windows-8/49488183-26cf-4389-af21-a85dc366c99a?pa ge=2#LastReply.
The problem has been noticeable on my MacBook, but not annoying enough yet to spend time troubleshooting. If you find a robust solution, using the links above or other method, it would be interesting to know.

Macbook Pro late 2008 with Mavericks gets Grey screen of death.
Hey guys..
When Mavericks was released, I updated my old Macbook Pro (late 2008) 2.8ghz on work, and since then I have had a couple of Grey Screen of Deaths.
I had none of those before Mavericks, so I guess thats the source of the problem.
I've been trying to figure out what might cause it, from the crash log below, but I can't seem to figure anything from it, so I was hoping you guys could help me?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to be a kernel panic, caused by some PowerManagement from kernel_task. But how do one fix that?

Thunderbolt Bus:I am having similair issues : MBP 4.1 2008
It does not want to reboot at all .
Stops with the grey screen .Spinning wheel / gear stops spinning and Mac reboots automaticly to.... get stuck again .
Ive tried the recovery : No automatic reboot But same screen : ( grey , stuck stopped spinning wheel) some how it enters Disk Utility because I can trigger the voice that ask for the language etc. (I left it there overnight without result ) I dont see DU on screen ( tried second monitor : No luck )
Did a hardware test : No issues
Did single user logon : fsck : No problems with the drive ( after 2 runs ) ( 1st runs : changes were made )
Did Logon Verbose status : Initial messages : shutdown reasons : code 128 ... now followed by code 3
Tried to reinstall the original OSX ( 2008 ) No luck : grey screen changes to darker screen coming in from the top asking to reboot the system .
1st real bad signal was : When donwloading Maverick ( again ) to create a bootable USB the screen started flickering ( this started when pressing the download button ??? - I had to reboot the mac to stop
2 days later :
Last Live activity with this mac was : Trying to create maverick Bootable USB using diskmaker X ) During this activty the mac died on me .
I have a full time machine backup : so no worries about data...I hope )
This mac is one of the lucky ones with the bad NVDIA 8600m gt cards ... after upgrarding in march 2013 to Lion ..it crashed on me with the black screen of death ...Since apple stopped the guarantee I baked it in the oven at 200 c for 7 minutes . For the last months it was working Fine . ( Hardware check shows no issues - and upon reboot it chimes happy ..)
What could be my next options ? ( Obvious buying a new one ... This is allready launched as an idea . I need more creative thoughts :-) -
Macbook Pro (late) 2008 won't recognize HDD and MAC OS X installed, but recognizes SAME HDD with Windows installed ... where is the problem !???
And HDD is APPLE certified ( 250 GB )Hello JashaCOLD,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with your external hard drive. I found an article with steps you can take when an external device is not being recognized.
I recommend following the steps in the section titled "Top troubleshooting tips" in the following article:

Macbook pro late 2008 (unibody) backlight not working, trackpad issue
Hi,
My wife is running 10.7.4 (Lion) on a MacBook Pro late 2008, first gen unibody. There is two issue with her computer.
The first issue is that the backlight keyboard is not working correctly. In fact, it is not working at all. My assumption is that it stopped working when it had a a display assembly replacement in 2010. My wife not behing to technical realized she did not had this feature when I bought a MBA 13" last year. It could be something with the system (OS) but I'm pretty sure it is not. I open the back of the case to see if something (a missing wire connectivity) could be found, but none step to my eyes. I did not want to dismantle everything in case I'll be making it worst!
The second issue is the trackpad. She told me many times that her mouse was not working as expected, and when I looked at, I finally found that the problem was not the mouse, but the trackpad. What I found is that the trackpad button, sometimes, stayed pressed. If that happen, eventually, the mouse is acting very trangely! My wife never uses the trackpad, so I can't figure out it is an abuse of it. To temporaly resolve the issue, I dissabled the trackpad when a mouse is connected in the Universal access system pref.
I plan to have it send to the Apple store next time I go near one. The Apple Care is expired...
My questions are:
any idea of what may be the problem and is it repairable easily by myself?
Could it be that the trackpad is broken in anyway?
Could it be possible that the technician forgot to reconnect a cable near the keyboard (under the motherboard) that prevent the backlight to work?
ThanksHi,

MacBook Pro late 2008 no longer working with Airport Express
Hi,
since a few days I have big problems with my MacBook Pro (late 2008) and my Airport Express. The MacBook can't find the airport express anymore, even not with the airport utility...
The Airport Express is correctly configured as my Ipod, Blackberry and Dell pc are connecting to it and do have internet access...
I can only manage the Airport Express when I'm directly connected to it with an ethernet cable.
My brother has an airport expreme, I tested it with my MacBook Pro and there it just works fine...
Can anyone help me? Has it something to do with an update for Mac OS X or the firmware from the Airport Express?
Many thanks in advance! Thanks for the response,
1. I live in Atlanta, close enough to an Apple store. But I just know that going there will probably mean I'll have to get the logic board replaced.
2. The only thing I noticed before the first USB port started acting funny was that my battery status changed to "Service Battery". I plan on replacing it this week too.
3. Nope only difference is that my battery drains kind of fast. After about 3-4 hours of my normal usuage with it (Internet, music, videos, and sometimes using Logic) it will be time to hook up the charger.
Would replacing the battery do anything? I'm not thinking it would but figure it'd be worth a shot since I've got to replace it anyway.
And to goofyziggy,
I too noticed that most people who had this problem had some version of OSX 10.8.x -
MacBook Pro late 2008 edition with 2 Gigs of RAM and running Mavericks (10.9.5). It gives me an error message when I try to download Yosemite
All,
I thought it may be related to spaces in the path in which the script was called from. I tried having the ODBC command script in another directory but the same thing happens. It will give me the "CONFIGSYSDSN: Unable to create a data source for the 'Oracle in OraClient10g_home1' driver: Could not load the setup or translator library with error code -2147467259". As soon as the script is done running I can manually double click the script and it adds the DSN fine.
Thanks,

MacBook Pro (late 2008) & Vista Biz 64bit
Hi:
Just got a new Macbook Pro (late 2008) and wanted to know if Windows Vista 64bit will run under Boot Camp?
Thanks,
Marchttp://support.apple.com/kb/HT1846 hasn't been updated, and yes it seems to work... with some minor issues (when or where are the latest BootCamp Apple setup services and drivers?) for new logicboard and chipset... so you will see errors and may have to do a "repair reinstall" but it works.

MacBook pro (late 2008) shutting down even without the battery
Hello
I have a MacBook pro late 2008 model, recently it started to randomly shut down.
I have tried the following
- Reseting Pram
- Reseting the SMC
- Recalibrating the battery
- New hard drive
- Returned to original RAM (from 4 to 2Gb)
- Removed the battery and run with the MagSafe only
- Downloaded a fan control program to run it at max and verify if this was not a heating issue (although this also happens right after starting the laptop)
Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm already loosing hope on my Mac :(
Thanks for any help that you could provideHi V,
Even though the symptoms don't match up exactly, you may have the NVIDIA issue. First, go to System Profiler > Hardware > Graphics/Displays and see if you have the GeForce 8600M GT GPU. This is the GPU covered under the free repair program. While there, also look at PCIe Lane Width. If it says anything other than x16, the GPU has issues (but this is only one potential symptom). If you have the 8600 GPU, bring the MBP to an Apple Store or AASP for free testing. If Apple's free test confirms the issue, repair is free. Read all about it here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
Also, whether you have the 8600 or not, you should run all the updates in Software Update.
