Audio latency

I started podcast four months ago. I use a USB Blue Snowball microphone. I interview my guests through Skype. I had not noticed much of audio latency until over a month ago when my voice through the Snowball microphone took about 1-2 seconds to come out the speakers at times. The software I am using is Audio Hijack Pro 2.9.7. I have just found latency of my voice on the recent recordings from my guests'. What is the problem? What can I do to reduce the audio latency as much as possible? My iMac is 3.06 GHz with 4 GB RAM.
In the meantime, I found that if I use the analog microphone, there is no audio latency in the final recording. If you think this is advisable, what is the analog headset or microphone you would recommend?
Thank you very much.
Robert

BTW, I can switch to 2-channels at 24 bit for speaker but cannot set the Blue Snowball at 2-channels at 24 bit. Is at 24 bit will reduce the audio latency?
Thanks.
Robert

  • Satellite A660-167 - audio latency actually really high

    Hello guys.
I'm having a Toshiba A660-167 and i'm having a problem with the audio latency, it's actually really high.
I'm using Windows 7 home premium 64bit and i have allready tried to use windows 7 32bit and windows Xp but the problem remains.
Toshiba allready tried to ''fix'' my problem but as they said my laptop works perfectly.
If somebody knows something about latency problem his help will be highly appreciated..
    thanks in advance

I already work for weeks daily on the poblem with audio dropouts on my A660.
The only thing that helps, is to connect a additional screen to my laptop. And there must run something with grafik. So it seems, the dropout problems come from NVIDIA, when it have not enough to work. (Of course i have the latest drivers).
I am really angry about this problem. When i work as dj i cannot place a second screen on the table. And when i record songswith my band i do not have enough place in our small studio too.
I bought the toshiba because i thought it is a fast thing. But on my old pentium pc with xp running, i never had any problems like this in 5 years.
I think the best solution will be to sell my 5 week old satellite, and never buy again anything from toshiba.

  • P35 and IHC9R audio latency/ spikes

    Hi,
I have a weird problem since buying 3x new hard disks and using RAID 0 for 2x internal disks and an eSATA connnection for the other disk.
Since buying the new hard disks and setting them up, I'm getting audio spikes every 5-10 seconds when playing MP3s or when the PC is generating sounds (like games), using SATA RAID and eSATA through the Intel IHC9 controller, but only when my external HDD is powered off. If i disconnect the eSATA cable or turn the external drive on, the sound returns to normal. It just doesn't like the external drive being connected but powered off.
I have found some threads on Tomshardware detailing a very similar problem on P35 based Gigabyte boards - http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/247210-12-audio-latency-problem-ds3r
    http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/244369-12-gigabyte-ds3r-documenting-issues-audio-stutter-raid
    My setup is:
    Intel C2D E4400
    MSI P35 Neo2 - 1.8 BIOS
    4x 1GB Corsair
    Soundblaster Audigy Platinum
    ATI 3870HD
    2 x 640Gb Western Digital WD6400AAKS - RAID 0
    1 x 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F1 - eSATA
    Windows Vista 64 SP1
All latest drivers where known from MSI and other sites
Does anyone have any similar experiences?
    Thanks

Microsoft has a Hotfix for this laptop to update the USB driver.

  • Video and audio latency from 6 seconds to 4 seconds

    Hello,
I have developed a video transmission and viewing application . I am facing a problem of one way video latency of about 6 seconds.
Adobe says that the latency can be reduced to about 3 seconds one way. I have set up the buffertime for transmitter about 3 seconds.
Please can  anyone suggest me how to reduce the latency from 6 seconds to about 3 seconds ??
I have no issues regarding the bandwidth , but can anyone suggest the proper optimization technique for CPU and memory usage .
What should be the ideal configuration for minimum latency.
Currently my audio and video  transmission one way is 6 sec and hence 2 way for both is 12 -14 sec.
Kindly guide me how to resolve the problem.
    Thanks,
    Chinmay Chitale

followed your instructions and as soon as I tick "multiplexed Mpeg-1/layer 2 audio" the m2v extension changes to mts. This won't play in Quicktime even if i change the extension to mpg, m2v or whatever. I'm assuming i need a quicktime plugin to fix this.

  • Kindle fire- largest audio latency yet

just got my hands on a kindle fire, really nice device for air apps, plays at 60 fps no problem and looks vibrant...feels like playing an upgraded game gear.
BUT! the audio delay when calling play in air is the worst i have seen on any android device...
I know we have had similar discussions with no resolution..sooo i just wanted to say :complain complain complain.

Below is a repost of my answer from this related thread:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3750664
    REPOST:
    Let's be clear:
    1) There is "acceptable" latency of the order of half a sec or so ( often less ), which according to the post by Holgate, #7 above, is an issue with -- some versions of ( ? ) -- Android ( not Air specifically ).
    2) Then, there is unacceptable delay, which appears to be specific to Air on some Android devices ( particularly Nook Color and Kindle Fire ), where a sound will sometimes play in near sync ( with "normal" Android latency ), and sometimes with a delay of SEVERAL SECONDS ( like 5 or 10, in one of my apps! ), which apparently has something to do with garbage collection ( Holgate post #14, above ).
I can confirm that the unacceptable delay has NOT been fixed as of Air 3.6, testing on Nook Color and Kindle Fire, though it is fine ( no delay ) on the Nexus One.
As pointed out in another forum, playing all your sounds in a silent loop, will prevent sounds from being garbage collected, and will eliminate the delay issue whenever you play a sound, like so:
    private function initSounds():void
         var silentSndXF:SoundTransform = new SoundTransform( 0 );
         _sound01.play( 0, int.MAX_VALUE, silentSndXF );
         _sound02.play( 0, int.MAX_VALUE, silentSndXF );
         _sound03.play( 0, int.MAX_VALUE, silentSndXF );
// Note: int.MAX_VALUE is about 2 billion, so even a very short "click" sound of 1/20
// of a sec would play for 3 years or so -- if the app was never closed !!
    private function onButtonClick( evt:MouseEvent ):void
         _sound01.play();
This hack eliminated the severe delay I was getting on Nook Color and Kindle Fire ( several seconds for some sounds, in some situations ), leaving me with the "regular", acceptable Android latency.

  • Problematic Button Sound audio latency occuring in Windows only

    hi
we have a music composer game for school children where they click buttons to play short samples in time with a backing track.
Our .swf file when run on a Mac works fine with no discernible latency.
When played on a Windows machine ( and also seemingly on Flash via an Android browser) there is a significant latency on pressing the button before hearing the sample which makes the game unplayable. Same .swf file is used. It is something like 2-400 milliseconds delay.
We have tried using Sound Objects, pre-loading sounds, using action script 1, using wav files, different sample rates of mp3 and different audio settings, plus having silent sound playing etc. Have tried exporting .swf as Flash file versions 5 up to 10. Doesn't make a difference. The latency is audible whether .swf is hosted on a webpage or played direct from a hard disk and has been reproduced on many different PCs. NB Our target users (education) nearly always use Windows XP so I haven't tested it on Vista.
What is of interest is that we have a very early .swf we had made in 2006. The activity is very similar (play short samples in time with a backing track) but the latency isn't there on a windows machine. The developer of the 2006 file doesn't have the original .fla file but it was probably coded in Flash 4 or 5 and he doesn't remember doing anything fancy so probably just attaching a sound file to a button down state.
Does anybody else recognise this problem and are there any ways round it?
I would be very grateful for any assistance.
    Best
    Tommy Banana

Right. As I mentioned, though, DirectSound latency was 1/8
second or more, unacceptable for sequential musical beats of about
.6 seconds each. Can you estimate the percentage of Windows systems
in use today that would NOT have QuickTime installed? For Version 1
of this project I included a QuickTime installer on the disk, but
that was almost nine years ago. I was hoping I wouldn't have to
    hassle with that in 2009.

  • Movie/audio latency????

i've made a 28 minute movie, when i export out of imovie the audio from movie clips is scattered and audio that i've muted plays at different parts of the video.... i thought it was just a fluke so i re exported, but it still happened. the same audio was in the same parts on the video, it seems like it might be a latency problem, but i'm not sure.

Hmm ... are you using Asio4All (IIRC, xtreme audio does not have nati've asio driver)?
Adjust the ASIO buffer size smaller (slider on control panel of asio4all (or on Creatives own asio panel)).

  • Audio latency problem SOLVED

Hi Everyone, I've recently purchased a Satellite A6665, and found myself having latency problems when using real-time audio processing software such as Ableton Live and/or Nuendo.
Fortunately, I was able to solve the problem installing the ASIO4ALL Drivers.
Here's the link to their website.
    http://www.asio4all.com/
I hope you find this useful.
    Best regards,
    Sebastian.

Hello sebastian, I have the same problem as you with my tecra a11 s3540 and I "solve" it in the same way as you, with asio for all. Any way, I thoung that this problem its saying something about some problem with the usb hubs on our laptops... It will be great if some one could give us any ligth about this... its not normal that a sound card (in this case a focusrite saffire usb 6) only works well using asio for all. I say this becouse I try my sound card on my old laptop (hp dv4000) and its works very nice, no latency problems.
wich sound card do you use?

  • Built-In Core Audio latency wierdness...

    Hi all,
Could someone verify this for me please. Using just the Built-In inputs and outputs on a MacBook Pro:
    1. Connect something to the line input. Connect speakers or headphones to the MacBook Pro outputs.
    2. Start Logic. (Choosing Built-in core audio in audio prefs if necessary, with Software monitoring enabled. Use low-ish buffer size eg 256 samples.)
    3. Rec-Enable an audio track from line input.
    4. Check Audio throughput is as expected i.e. negligible latency.
    5. Unplug headphone/output.
    6. Re-Plug headphone/output
    7. Latency is now around 1 second!! What the...?
If anyone else can verify this I'd be most grateful. If it's just me (and I hope it is) then I can set about sorting it out myself with re-installs or whatever....
The strange thing is that audio instrument latency remains normal - it's just the audio input --> output chain that seems to be affected. Pressing play seems to temporarily reset the buffers again, although I am sometimes getting clicks, pops and jitters.
    Cheers,
    Bryan

    Hi,
Of course, I realize that the Built-In in/out is not sufficient for professional audio work.
I'm really trying to get to the bottom of serious general Core Audio problems that I've been experiencing with all my audio devices: Motu828mkII, IK-Multimedia Stealth Plug (A Guitar cable) and Built-In. You may remember this thread about latency issues when recalling Channel Strips saved as Performances.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4903770&#4903770
Basically, core audio becomes totally unstable after recalling a channel strip saved as a Performance. Latency increases dramatically - until you press play again, which resets the latency, although core audio remains unstable i.e. glitches and other strangeness. Identical behaviour when plugging/unplugging headphone out.
I do hope I'm not whining too much, it's just that I'd like to be able to use MBP to process live guitar, and at the moment it is unstable.
    Cheers,
    Bryan.

  • Poor audio latency

    Hi,
I've got a FMS server running that is hosting a simple video conferencing application. The problem I'm seeing is that when two computers are sitting next to one another, the audio delay between streams is minimal, perhaps 1s. When computers are farther apart, the audio lag gets much worse, often with a 5s delay. I don't see any actionscript parameters that I can modify that may help get this under control. Are there things I can do on the actionscript side (either on the client or server) that could help improve this situation? How likely is this simply a server problem?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Are you setting netStream buffer on client side(NetStream.setBufferTime) that might be causing delay. If you are setting it then try decreasing buffer on client side to 0.1 to 0.2 second.
On FMS, you can try decreasing the Live Buffer/queue size OR disabling the Live Buffer/queue completely, But with a caution as disabling the queue will give very low latency but will affect the server performance.
    Regards,
    Amit

  • Audio latency: USB vs. Firewire audio interfaces

I would like to find out when latency can be an issue with audio interfaces and how much of a difference USB 1.1 vs. USB 2 vs. Firewire can make. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks!

    Symon wrote:
My current Lacie Rugged drive has reached capacity as a backup unit.
whether firewire really makes that much difference when just using it as a back up drive.
For an initial backup, yes. I have the triple-interface Rugged, and timed an initial full backup of a small (about 30 GB) system. Overall, USB came in at about 55 GB/hr, F/W 800 at 84 GB/hr.
Both were done with little else in use on the system; the difference would probably have been greater had there been high CPU usage, as the CPU has to do more of the work via USB that the F/W chipset does with FireWire.
Of course, the difference won't amount to much on anything but a full or large backup or restore.

  • Audio latency problem with VST, SONAR and Audigy 4 PRO

    Hello all,
I have a slight problem with audio performance on my computer and I can't isolate what is wrong. I am using Cakewalk SONAR 4 studio edition, and a recently purchased Audigy 4 Pro soundcard. ( I know it's not quite professional grade, but it works well for me) I recently bought some string instruments from the Vienna Symphonic Library. So far, I love the sound of these "virtual instruments" if you will. The problem comes when I try to record them. I get stuttering and dropouts when I try to record the track in Sonar. I've tried the WDM drivers in 16 and 24 bit modes and the ASIO drivers (which apparently only support 16 bit!?) I know Creative has mentioned that these cards can record easily at 24/96 which is what I'd like if possible. Vienna instruments come in a 24 bit format. Is there something I'm doing wrong or do I need to seriously consider a different soundcard? I use Sonar to bring in the Vienna instruments as a VST. I also apply a reverb on it. When I just play this stuff on my MIDI keyboard, it all sounds great and keeps up. The moment I go to record though, I get dropouts after about 15 seconds or so. Also, is there no way to get ASIO 24 bit support for creative's consumer level cards? I'd be happy with the WDM's personally if those would work. I've looked into the KX project as well but haven't had a chance to try their drivers yet. On a different note, what are the significant differences between ASIO and WDM if any at all? (aside from supported bit rates) My current computer setup is quite powerful and I don't use much CPU power at all so I don't think it's my setup. Intel E6700 (2.67Ghz) Core 2 Duo, 2GB DDR2-800, 320GB Seagate SATA in RAID 1, Nvidia 7600GT, and Creative Audigy 4 Pro. Any help, or insight would be greatly appreciated!
    Matthew

Audigy 4 Pro should support 24-bit/96 kHz w/ ASIO --> have you selected those I/O drivers in Sonar audio settings (Options-Audio-Drivers -tab). ! You need to unselect all I/O drivers first to get those 24/96 drivers selectable)?
Dropouts comes from various sources. Have you checked if the read/write caching is set properly (Sonar, try different settings)?
Stuttering may come from shared IRQ/resources and PCI Latency settings.
If your graphics card is not PCIe then, make this registry tweak
Run regedit and search the key named as DisableProgPCILatency
    - set all 'DisableProgPCILatency' key values to 1 (HEX or DEC) (1 = disabled, 0 = enabled)
    - boot to BIOS settings and find the "PCI latency timer" option --> set its value to 32 or 64 (this is global PCI latency setting)
    - reboot
and check the IRQ situation. If there are IRQ shares between Audigy and other devices/controllers, try to get those fixed by disabling unneeded controllers/devices or by moving the Audigy into another PCI slot (PCI slots #3 and #4 are normally not shared).
    Couple meaninful differences between WDM/KS and ASIO are;
    - you can't get latency lower than 10 ms w/ WDM/KS (well, you can in Sonar by manually editing those buffer values but, the result is not good when you go under 10 ms buffer values (buffersize / samplerate * 1000 = latency in ms --> 512/96000*1000=5.33ms)
    and
    - you can record from one stereo (you can split this to two mono) source at a time w/ WDM (recording source is set in CT Surround Mixer (or windows recording controls))
    - ASIO supports (Audigy serie) locked 'resolutions' only - 16/48 or 24/96
Also, tweak your system for music - http://www.musicxp.net/
Some information on CT ASIO -

  • USB AUDIO latency

    Hi,
I just received the new MBP 15" 2.42
I purchased an M-audio mobile usb interface to record live instruments.
Incredible latency (delay), it wavers. I change the settings in system preferences, it corrects the problem, but slowly begins delaying, meaning the transfer is inconsistent. Impossible to record music.
I've changed settings in battery/ac adapter settings to increase performance, keyboard sensitivity, etc., but still, I don't know if it's my mbp, or the Mobile USB device. I even updated the software for the preamp.
    Any help would be appreciated!~
    Cory

    1. Does it make any difference which USB port you use ?
    2. Has the M-audio box got an external power option ?
FWIW: I use a MacMice MicFlex USB Microphone and get great input quality/performance.

  • Audio latency on macbook pro and tascam us-1641

I'm having an issue with latency using:
macbook pro 2.3 ghz, 3GB RAM, 120 GB hard drive
    logic pro 8
tascam us-1641 fully updated (1.01 firmware, and 1.0 OS X driver installed)
When I listen to live sound, there's about a 1/2 second delay. I've tried adjusting the adjusting the buffer size to a lower setting (below 256), but then I start to hear wierd noises, or nothing at all. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    CH

I'm having the EXACT same issue as you (my Macbook Pro has 4 gigs o RAM)
I've had the issue since I bought it, and I have since given up on Software Monitoring through Logic and now just use the US1641's lame hardware monitoring (you dont even get a software control panel for the 1641, ****, my ANCIENT AARDVARK Q10 HAD A FRIGGIN CONTROL PANEL!!!!) and I cant even pan the input (Which is essential for me doing guitar overdubs!).
I mean seriously. I know this thing is USB, but I really feel Tascam cut too many corners. Given its only $400 but the lack of stability on OS10.4 and the lack of a control panel of some sort is enough for me to ebay this thing and finally get a Motu unit.
Anyone hear of a patch or fix with this issue?
