Audio Level Broadcast quality in Final Cut ProX

At which volume level shall I keep the final video movie to broadcast?
When it shows -6db to -12 db on the audio meter level is that OK?
Basically what's the level above which I should not go?
Thanks,
Jacqui

My 2 cents as an audio engineer.  Audio db leaves are standardized.  Voices should average around -6.  Everything else should be balanced around that.  Don't go much over -3, never hit 0, you'll be fine.  It's not about hearing damage, it is about digital audio artifacts ending up in the final mix.
The level meters and the volume db readings are not the same thing.  The level of an audio file, at 0, is normal, the level it was recorded at.  That can register as anything on the level meter.  If I record someone whispering, it'll playback lower.  A gun shot will playback louder.  But both playback with the "volume" (technically "gain") set to 0, normal.  Just like luma levels.  Everything imports at the level it was recorded at, then you adjust as needed.
So, for broadcast, if your lowest sounds are averaging -12, your normal speaking voices around -6, and your loudest bangs and explosions averaging around -3, and nothing touches 0, you're broadcast safe.  Simple as that.  And the Limiter audio effect can be your best friend with problematic audio levels.
Here's a PDF that can help you understand all the audio filters from Logic that are included with FCPX, and how they work.

  • How to Import and Edit a 60i video to Final Cut ProX

    Hi Final Cut ProX community,
I just recently purchased a Sony HDR - JP650V Camcorder which shoots 24p, 60i and 60p. I've been shooting long video's and the only frames per second I can use is 60i for this specific camcorder.

I've been trying to shoot in 60i and then import it to Final Cut Pro X and edit it for YouTube but everytime I import it the inspector tells me it's a 1440x1080 | 29.97 fps. I know I have the camera set to [Long Time ]: 1440 1080/60i quality, AVC HD 5M (LP).
How can I get Final Cut ProX to recognize the 60i fps when importing the video vs the 29.97 fps?
Reading some forms and being new to the video world could this be because of the i stands for "interlacing" which is 30 fps x 2, so FCPX only registers 30 (29.97fps).
    Could that be the issue?

    Brandon,
I also use Sony's HDR-PJ50V camcorder to record seminars at remote locations. These seminars are four days long, with some presentations lasting up to 1.5 hours or more.
Each evening, I back-up the days proceedings to an external hard drive.
I record in the 60i mode as it only takes up half the cameras hard drive space. The photos and videos that I use for my outros are recorded in 60p and appended to the end.
I export video to QT7, process it in Compressor, and send to YouTube. See the excellent link below.
I also drag the QT7 file to Toast for DVD burning.

Also see this YouTube link, especially the the 60p ending.

Is your iMac still really on OS X 10.2 Jaguar?
Could you supply more accurate info about your Mac.
    What Mac do you have?
To find out info about your system,
Click on the Apple symbol in the upper left of the OS X main menu bar. A drop down menu appears.
Click About this Mac. A smaller popup window appears. This gives you basic info like what version of OS X your iMac is running, the speed of your iMac's CPU and how much RAM is installed.
Click on the button that says More Info.
A larger window appears giving you a complete overview of your iMac's hardware specs.
Highlight all of this info and copy/paste all of this into another reply to this post, editing out your iMac's serial number before actually posting the reply.
This will tell us everything about your iMac so we may begin to help with your iMac issues.

  • How can I change the level of undos in final cut X.

I was wondering if there is a way of changing the level of undos in Final Cut X and or how many level of undos exsist in already. i.e. in the FCP 7 you had to go to prefernces and chagne it from like 3 to 99, is there something similar that needs to be done in FCP X?

You can't. It has unlimited undos, though some things seems to be missing from the undo queue, and sometimes it fails. Basically you can't change it.

Where are you importing from – a camera or computer? If you are optimizing at import, make sure the background processes are completed. (Command-9)

Hi, since i put some mp4 video or DVD files on my external hard drives final cut prox won't recognize my hard drives, i move all the video files and the problem still exist. somebody have the solution

Did the back and forth between PC and Mac file systems screw up my files somehow?
Yes. Unfortunately the move has almost certainly caused the loss of the resource data that would have been (invisibly) attached to those files.
By adding a specific .mov extension after the fact you will have helped the Mac correctly identify the file type / asscoiations but also significantly you will have physically changed the filename eg from "clip" to "clip.mov". This means that when you come to reconnect the media in FCP , then FCP will be looking for files that no longer exist at the given path eg when specifically looking for our example clip called "clip" of course it won't find it.
Try this as a test... first remove the ".mov" extension from one or more of the clips, select those clips and press Cmd-Opt-I to open an Info window for the selection. You'll see an "Open with:" popup and in that popup you should choose QuickTime Player (if its a Unix Executable then it will initially list Terminal as the appropriate app, you have to choose Other... then in the open dialog choose Enable > All Applications and then navigate to and select the Quicktime Player app as the appropriate app). After you've done that restart FCP and see if you can now reconnect to those clips.

  • Final Cut ProX Users - Lets get this thing working

I was with FCP from day one. Adobe Premiere was always breaking and needed fixing every month so I jumped ship.
I did not move from FCP 6.06 to 7 as I had a funny feeling that something was afoot. So I waited.
Now, I have a copy of FCPX I am am going to see in the next few days just how broken it is. I would suggest that if you have persevered and like me, cannot resist a challenge and decided to give it a go.
Hang in there and use this post to flag up any ideas, fixes or for those things you just cannot work out.
    So here goes:
Before firing up X create a 'test' folder on your external RAID. Because that is where we keep our projects and media ...don't we?
Drop into this test folder copies of differing media and file formats. I have unwrapped XDCAM, P2, pngs, aifs NTSC and PAL media. Anything you can think of.
Be sure to give all your test footage and files names that relate to the format. ie XDCAM 720p 50 PAL. You may need to use Spotlight to track down lost content.
It is important you do this so as to keep the first trial of X as simple as possible. You need to know exactly where all your media is coming from and going to to.
Open X and explore the preferences first.
Open the import dialog explore all your options on this. This is where you will be able to send an (event) project and set up how and where referenced media is located. Don't rush it.
    Don't Panic
    Note:
Once downloaded X will appear to wipe out 7.
If you try to open a 7 project it will get a message 'no app'  right click and use open with.
    Quit X first.
7 project will work just fine.

please post this in the Final Cut ProX forum where you will receive a reply.
FCPX it is a completly different application as this is the to the Final Cut Studio version

  • Will iDVD be able to recognise the chapter markers created from Final Cut ProX Ver 1.1 ?

    Hi there,
It has been quite a while since I use iDVD from Final Cut Express 4 days. So, please excuse my ignorance.
Can I know whether iDVD will be able to recognise the chapter markers I created from Final Cut ProX Ver 1.1 ?
That is to say, if I share/export a file from FCPX and tick the "include chapter markers" box ...
    Thanks

    Ian R. Brown wrote:
I don't know but you can find out for yourself in a couple of minutes.
Make a one minute project (any old clip) and add several chapter markers.
Export it and drop it into iDVD to see whether the chapter markers are recognised.
Thanks Ian, problem is forgot how to use iDVD already ...
And i remember reading some where that iDVD cannot recognise the markers generated by the earlier version of FCPX. So I am not sure about the Ver 10.1
So I was thinking, if Ver 10.1 is still the same, I might as well no need to re-learn iDVD yet ... Hahaha
    Cheers

  • No audio tracks when sending from Final Cut?

    Hi,
I'm working with a 90 minute edited sequence in final cut that I've nested in another sequence to create a continuous video with a stereo audio track. When I send it to soundtrack (multitrack project) for mixing, the video is there but the audio tracks are blank.
Does any one know why this is happening or have suggestions as to what I might do differently?
    Thanks in advance.

I ended up exporting the sequence inside my nested sequence and that worked as it should.
But all of my audio tracks were given their own track in Soundtrack which wasn't what I wanted. Finally I exported my nested sequence "for soundtrack" and applied the effects and filters to the resulting file's audio tracks and saved it. I then imported the file back into FCP, put it in a sequence and made any adjustments that I needed before exporting it with compressor.
I don't know if this applies to what you need to do but I hope it's helpful.

  • Why is the text I create in LiveType appear so low Quality in Final Cut Pro

I been having problems trying to get my fonts and titles to look sharp because once I place them into Final Cut Pro, they become all pixelated. I have my playback at full quality, and even when I render the movie the titles look sloppy... What exactly is wrong?

It would really help if someone could tell me exactly what I need to do to achieve good looking titles... I would hate to be halfway through the project only to have to re-do everything because of a small technical error.

  • Best export for dvd quality using final cut express hd?

    hey guys
i have final cut express hd...what would be the best export settings to get nice highquality dvd?
i am going to put about 25, short 5 minute clips in the dvd..will it be able to fit and all be a nice quality?
    any suggestions?
    thankyou!

Yes, provided you use dual layer DVD-R and your burner supports this newer media.
Otherwise the most you can burn to DVD-R SL media is 120 mins. (but keep in mind menus, titles, photos, etc all consume space as well thereby reducing the available amount of run time / QT Playback.

  • Quality between final cut pro X and iMovie

Is there any one know that the final cut pro X has a better resolution/color quality than imovie? I have import my 1080p digital video to imovie, after processing, and found that the qualtity of color seems down grade to an unacceptable quality as special as some under exposure area. The color seems painting. No graduation change.

That is exactly why I went to FCPX (along with wanting more editing flexibility).  The resolution and color quality are far better in FCPX than I was able to achieve with iMovie.

  • Unable to open a fCE 4 project in final cut proX

    Hi there.
I've been working with FCE 4 for a number of years now and just decided to upgrade to FCP. I have an FCE4 project that I would like to open in FCP X but I can't figure out how. I feel like a total beginner... I can't even find File -> Open Project.
Can anyone send me in the right direction?
    Thanks!
    David

This should be a no brainier for the guys engineering this new upgrade.
I'm new to the forum, new to Apple Computers, and new to Final Cut.
Fresh insights might be helpful.  Albeit, this is not intended to be by any means an exhaustive list of wrongs with the new and improved FCP X.
I've been working with Final Cut Express 4. The learning curve, for me, was steep.  Apple has a different glossary than PC. I was working in Avid Studio for over 10 years and was very adapt to the software, and it was not without it's faults.
So I had to learn the Apple Way, that took me close to a year.  After investing time and energies into the process and finally getting to a place of feeling like I understood the terminology and the platform of Final Cut, they go and change it.  After doing some google searches to get reviews on the new and improved product, I was amazed at the New York Times article written about the product and the firestorm of ridicule that the author and Apple has received for the new and improved product.
I just decided to download the Trial of Final Cut Pro X, and give it a whirl.  Right off I saw the fresh new look and liked many of the features that were available to me in Avid, but not in Express.  Yes I know that Express is the entry level, but still, it compares to Avid's Studio 14, which blows FCE4 away.  Anyway, I was pleased to see some of the features that I was desiring in FCE4 being offered in FCP X.
As I said, it seems strange that the engineers took the platform and completely remade it.  OK, that's their prerogative.  I think it's misleading in every way to state that it's Final Cut Pro.  This is a different program with a much different platform, different glossary, different lay out, different filing system, and as mentioned in the very first post, does not accept the files of Final Cut Pro 7 or earlier editions.
I totally understand the frustration of the Professionals who have invested a lot of treasury, time, and study to learn this program, to work it into their work flow, and then have the rules changed.
For me, it's not a big deal, but I would be extremely bent out of shape to think that the program I've toiled over and become expert at has now been altered to not even have the slightest resemblance to it's apparent Father.
I don't understand why their are not Sequences, Bins, logging properties, and more, just to mention a few.
I'm still trying to decide if I like it or not.  It has many great features that I find easier to follow and understand.
I'm a videographer, and shoot weddings and special events.  I also do documentaries for non profit groups and Churches.  I am a seasoned editor, and Cameraman.   I like the iMac I purchased a year ago, and have had not issues to date, save this program.
Final Cut Pro X has crashed 4 times in two days, that's the first time I've ever had a program crash with the iMac.  It happened when I was working in the titling portion of the program.
In conclusion, I'm new to this Forum, I sure that I've broken some protocal, but be kind.  I have spent 15 years or more on Avid's Forums and was a seasoned editor and user.  I saw the post and naturally had the same question, which Tom Wolsky provided the same answer for.
I know that when we had such issues as this the boards were alive with comments and responses, but in the end some of our suggestions would end up bringing changes to the product.  They either came out with a fix for a bug or they came out with a new product.
I can remember such issues as this and they took care of them eventually by adding a conversion step within the newer versions or a download to convert the old files to the new file extensions.
Maybe they have this planned for a soon release.  If not I think that Apple may have cooked their golden goose for sure.  Many seem to see this as more of a consumer platform than a Professional editing platform.
I like to follow the chatter on the matter, if there is a proper thread for such things.
