Audio Levels and Bins

I recently got a copy of FCE and am still getting used to it. I was wondering if you could change the audio levels in certain points. I've been using premiere for a number of years and on that you can click on the level line which inserts a point at which you can either peak and troughs.
My project is basically an interview with the a band and at certain intervals im inserting live footage. i have a track playing in the background during the interview and would like it to suddenly get louder in the places where theres footage of the subject in action. How do i go about this?
Also i have another Project that im working on which involves my recent trip to california. Basically when capturing my clips i would like each tape to be saved into seperate folders and bins. So in the program i can quickly find my clips which would be in seperate bins DAY1-DAY2-DAY3 etc.
How do i go about doing this also?
Any Help would be much appreciated
thanks

Turn on the clip overlays in the Timeline (Opt-W). Hold the option key and click on the pink audio level line to add a keyframe. Add another keyframe, grab it and pull it down. Not unlike Premiere.
Make a new bin (Cmd-B) and name it. Right-click on it and select Make Capture Bin. Anything you capture will go into that bin. For the next day's material make another bin and set that as the capture bin. You could also just capture the material and move it into appropriate bins.

What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 12/12.1 running on? Can we assume that this audio plays back OK
on the same computer when you are using a computer player independent of Premiere Elements?
What are the properties of these clips that worked before but do not know with regard to sound
For now, I will assume that you are working on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit.
Have you checked the Edit Menu/Preferences/Audio Hardware ASIO settings? Do you have any 3rd party audio devices incorporated in your computer environment?
Please delete the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file and, if that does not work, then the whole 12.0 Folder in which the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file exists. The Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit path is

and, in the 12.0 Folder, is the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file that you delete. If that does not work, then delete the whole 12.0 Folder in which the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file exists. Make sure that you are working with Folder Option "Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives" active so that you can see the complete path cited.

  • Audio level higher than needed after encoding

    Hi,
    I'm editing a film.
Voice over level is set to maximum for most part of it. It sounds as it supposed to sound after encoding.
There are several parts of the film that are supposed to be quiet. They are set as quiet on the timeline and do sound quiet during preview playback.
The problem is after I export the film to mpeg (I've also tried many other formats) the sound level in those quiet parts is automatically raised to very high. Those pieces sound almost as loud as the voice over. Looks like Premiere or Media Encoder have some automated audio level normalization or something like this.
I've tried to find encoding settings that are perhaps responsible for that, and I've also looked up for a solution on Adobe forums -- but I couldn't find anythind appropriate.
    I'm using Premiere CS5 on a PC.
    Thanks in advance!

    Igor,
Always glad to help, even if not directly.
I use MediaPlayer Classic HC for playback testing on the computer, and it seems to handle my Audio better than WMP, and some others. Do not know KM, so cannot comment on it.
I also edit Audio by ear, with but a glance at dB levels, from time to time.
Now, though you're probably way ahead of it, this ARTICLE gives some tips on Audio Levels, and some different methods of adjusting them.

  • Matching audio levels in disparate clips

Hi. I'm compiling a DVD that has clips from various sources. Some of them are old DVD projects that I've had to extract clips from, using MPEGStreamClip.
My problem is getting a uniform volume setting amongst all the clips: Some are low volume, and some are high (or optimal) volume.
Does DVDSP allow for the "regulation" of individual track volumes? This is vexing me to no end.
    Thanks

I had to go back and re-encode to get my levels to match. It was a PITA, but I got it done.
This is a feature that Apple needs to put into DVDSP: the ability to change individual track levels or normalize (set all to the same peak level) all tracks.
When doing a compilation of clips, demo reels, etc., one is likely to encounter all variations of audio levels and amounts of audio-hardware-type compression.
Having to convert an ac3 to QT, or some other format and then re-compress it back to ac3 is going to irrevocably degrade the audio quality.
It'd also nice to be able to do audio and video fades withing DVDSP.

  • DBFS check audio level

Can anyone tell me how I might be able to accurately check the level of my Audio within FCP 10.1.1 in dBFS and also how to ensure that when I complete a project that my exported (Pro Res 422) version is precisely that level. NB. I don't want to tamper with my audio in any respect (eg. with a Limiter or similar) as I intend making music video clips for broadcast and would prefer not to alter any of the dynamics of the mastered mixes, as well as being certian I am not exceedig the -10dBFS delivery standard required by our local television stations. Any help or suggestions will be much appreciated, have spent ages looking for answers to this.

As a video editor of an advertising agency, and always making TVCs for TV stations, I totally understand your frustration when they insist the required audio level, and I was suffered with this problem badly.
I ended up with not using the audio meter in both FCP 7 and X because they are simply not accurate, or probably even not measuring the things we need, instead, I use WAVES WLM Plus Loudness Meter plug in, and set it to the audio standard suits your station or country, like OP 58 in Australia, etc.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

  • Change audio levels/pan on multiple clips at once?

Hey folks, any idea if there's a simple speedy way to change the audio level or pan of multiple source clips at once? Not adding a filter etc but just going into clip and making the change, doing these manually one by one right now and would love to find a batch way to do it.
    any help appreciated.
    cheers, J

Select the level and pan criteria you want on one clip; ctrl+click and select copy. Highlight all of the clips you want to change and then ctrl+click one of the clips and choose Paste Attributes. Select Audio Levels and Pan and all of your selected clips will have the same levels as the original one.
You can also select a number of clips, select from the pull down menu Modify>Levels, and there you can adjust the levels of your audio for all of the clips selected.

  • Adj. audio levels - transparent to DVD Studio Pro

I've reviewed posts about audio levels and I understand it must be done outside DVD Studio Pro. I've run into several work-flow bumps that pose these questions...
When I use an app to raise or lower the audio level when I "Save As" or export to match the original parameters (48k, 16bit, Stereo, big endian) DVD Studio Pro will reject the new file (that has been used in the project already) with this error msg.... "file no longer uses a supported graphics format"
What is the fastest and most transparent way to change audio levels? (to aviod this rejection by DVD Studio Pro?) Ideally one would simply "Save" after the adjustment vs Save As or export.
On a related score, other apps allow you to substitute assets. So provided the running time and basic (audio) parameters are the same, can one do this in DVD Studio Pro?
In my haste for a solution in a simple dvd demo reel I was making I was willing to trash the pair of quicktime files (m2 & aiff) after manually purging them form the project, then re-importing and reassigning a new pair that included the adjusted audio. Even in a simple project this workaround was no fun. Suggestions? Thanks in advance.
    Paul

As this "imported" file is the only thing in it, I'm not sure what multitrack means in this example but I'll experiment. When you say "editor in a new tab" I wish I understood what this "editor" tab is as it does not appear in the pdf manual. Is there another name for this tab-window? Exporting the multitrk proj would put me in the same mismatch pickle I was in to start with.
    Thanks,
    Paul
This is strange. Are you viewing it in a "multitrack"
project? Once double-clicked on, the file should open
in the editor under a new tab, which has the same
name as the file. In this editor you can perform
whatever is necessary. If this continues to fail, try
exporting the multitrack project with the same name
and file type as the original to replace it. That
will work also. Hope it works this time.

  • Cannot set audio level to zero

    Hi,
I know how to edit the audio levels and have no trouble setting it, from 0% to 150%.
With the video clips this works fine. I can go from complete silence to full volume.
When I try this with an audio only track, I can set the fader from 0% to 150%. The audio gets louder as I increase the percentage. When I set the percentage to zero however, I can still hear the audio. It's softer, but still there.
I've tried using the "fade" feature, dragging the line from starting level down to zero. The audio fades, but not to complete silence. I'd say the level is equivalent to the 10-15% level I get when fading video.
    I have iMovie version 5.0.2.
    Any and all suggestions appreciated!

  • I have been editing my films and spent hours fixing the audio levels. Everytime I close and re-open final cut audio levels go back down.

I have been busy editing my film and for the third time now, i have been correcting my audio levels with each clip  - this takes me hours - and everytime I go back to the project, the audio levels fall back down. So everything i did previously was a waste of time.
Does anyone have the same issue? Is there anything I am doing wrong here?

Gosh, that sounds aweful close to the same problem people are experiencing with the undo bug. They don't know their having a problme until they hit Command+Z to undo their last change, and they can't, the undo command is actually grayed out in the menu. I understand if this happens, X is not auto saving your changes either. So, the next time you make all of your changes, check to see if your undo command is grayed out from the menu. If it is, duplicate your project to force a manual save. Then Quit X and reopen it and insure you project is intact.

  • What are the iTunes digital audio levels in and out

I am having a lot of trouble with finding out and setting the audio levels in and out of iTunes.
Digital audio has 16bits at '1' with an analog signal level of +12dB, 24bit has all'1's at +18dB. Making the overhead capability for CD 16bit 12dB and that for HD 24bit 18dB.
I would like to record (using SoundStudio) a set of standard audio tones from 20-20kHz with digital levels of "all 1's" 16bit, or +12 dB analog level, "all 1's" 24bit ditto, and the same for levels of analog 0dB (-12dB digital) for 16bit and 0dB(-18dB digital) for 24bit.
What I am finding is that if I get Sound Studio to inert a tone at what it calls 0dB, save it as AIFF, then the output it from iTunes I get a much higher level, around +8dB or so!
    Any ideas?

As an addition to my first question. I asked the makers of Sound Studio about levels. They tell me that the Mac standard is to have all '1's in the digital stream defined as 0dB.
Which helps as I can now record a tone at the CD level of -12dB and the HD audio level of -18dB. And if I make recordings I know to keep the input levels well into the green, not yellow and definitely not up to the red.
As you say the output of iTunes is boosted, and from my measurements this boost is in the analog circuitry and is about +8dB.
I woul dnot recommend turing down the iTunes volume control as this brings in the digital volume reduction, which depends on the algorithm they have implemented. This is not so bad for iTunes as the Audio Core software works at 32bit and can handle 16bit volume changes fairly well. But on the iPad it is different as iOS is only 16bit audio so the volume algorithm is poor. So always leave the volume at maximum and turn down your HiFi volume control!
Or use a digital output to an external DAC as the iTunes volume control is then disabled. Set Audio MIDI for 24bit output and you are ready to go with HD Audio.

  • Audio Level Change to and from progr

When I get into even a simple program that i made that didnt go full screen my media player music (WMP ) quieted even though there is now visable change in any audio, also and most importantly is when I load up WC3 or WoW my volume gets lowered on the media player and once again no volume controls change so there is no visable change, I've also had times were there was no sound coming from the player or game, unless I minimised the program and restarted play back in some way but then right when i get back into the game it quits. • Why don't my FCPX and RED epic audio levels match?

So I have a RODE something or the other mic connected to channel 1 in the RED EPIC, recording in mono.  Its runs on batteries and all that good stuff so there is no need for phantom.  When I record on the RED my levels are appropriate, they are getting to what I'd assume is -6 (a lil bit into the yellow).  Then I import to FCPX and the levels are off.  In order for me to get useable sound I need to jack up my levels 12db.  So I recorded at a bad level on the RED, all in the red area of the graph.  (there are no number indicators on the RED EPIC for audio), and now me levels in FCPX are hitting -6db.  Is the RED audio scale off, or is FCPX auto compressing my audio.  It also seems like it is limiting it, because some of my audio that I import from the EPIC won't go past 0db unless i alter it in anyway, not that I would want to go past 0db but I should be able to.  What I think is happening is one of two things either the EPIC's audio scaling is radically off, or FCPX is doing some sort of automation during ingestion, b/c the levels on the camera do not match the levels on FCPX.  I also doubt RED would mess up such a long standing, standardized measuring system as the one that is currently used.   Also on another side note when I change my clip from dual mono to stereo it changes the audio levels w/o changing the waveform.  I go to dual mono and it limits all the sound to under -6db not matter how loud, and then I switch to stereo and without changing any volume settings it seems to go back to a original raw form that uses the whole spectrum.  Does anyone know whats going on here, b/c I am really confused at this point.

also in addition I brought it into Premiere Pro CC and Pro Tools and in Pro Tools the audio was spot on, in Premiere it was 3db off and in FCPX it was 6db off.  Is anyone else having this problem?

  • How do I shift clips and audio and adjust audio levels in CS5.5

    OK, a couple of things.
I'm trying to shift everything over (this includes videos, some name supers, and unlinked audio) so I can insert some music here and there. I can drag the music on to Audio 2 or something, but I still want to scoot everything else over a couple of seconds. Is there an easier way to do this?
Secondly, I want to adjust the audio levels on the music. SO I want it to start off soft, grow louder, then back down until you don't even notice it. How would I do this? Thanks.

For the Nudging of multiple Assets, have you tried Selecting them all, and then using the Cursor Keys (arrows) to Nudge, one Frame at a time?
For the ramping up/down of the Audio Volumes, there are several ways to do that. Keyframing the Fixed Effect>Volume (in the Effects Control Panel) will allow one to adjust the Volume up/down over time. If you have never done Keyframing, then I would start with the Help File, as there are a lot of things to learn. Once, however, you have concepts and mechanics down, Keyframes are easy, and so very powerful. This article discusses several ways to adjust Volume/Gain, and might be useful: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3472343#3472343

  • Count at bin level and quant level?

what is the difference between cycle count at bin level and quant level?
    Thx

If you use cycle counting inventory at quant level, the system does not set the inventory block for the entire storage bin. It sets the block instead for the quant to be inventoried.
You count only the selected materials, not all materials in the storage bin. If you manage storage bins with mixed storage, these storage bins are accessible for stock movements with other quants.
There can be open transfer orders for all materials that were not flagged for cycle counting in the inventory document. You can also create transfer orders for these materials during the inventory.
The system saves the inventory data at quant level.
In a stock movement, if you move a quant from one storage bin to another, the system deletes the quant in the source storage bin and creates a new quant in the destination storage bin.
Because the system stores the inventory data for the cycle counting inventory at quant level in the quant data, any inventory data that you previously entered is lost in this type of stock transfer.
