When I press play within the project, the playhead doesn't move from left to right with the audio like it should. As well as within the mix window, the audio levels are not displayed. However, when I click and hold within the arrange window, everything is fine and working properly, but I'm not going to be holding down the mouse the whole time I'm working on a project.
Does anybody have any sort of advice for me at all?
Also, if I were to buy Logic Pro X, would all of my projects currently running in Logic Pro 9 be able to open up in Logic Pro X? I also have the Waves Mercury Bundle, Vangard and Antares Auto-Tune, would all of those work with Logic Pro X?When I press play within the project, the playhead doesn't move from left to right with the audio like it should. Audio level display as overlay on desktop
My Compaq laptop shows the audio level as soon as I take action to change it. It displays a nice green bars on the bottom of the screen. The number of green bars depends on the audio level. I heard these Lenovo T-61's can have that capability but I have not been able to find the option already present or anything to download and install to enable that capability. It was taking too long to search at the Lenovo website anyway. If anyone knows which app to download and install from Lenovo or even third party developers to do these please let me know. Thanks.
The desktop shows you the content of the Desktop folder in your home folder as well as mounted volumes as defined by the Finder's preferences; the mounted volumes are located at /Volumes/ in the filesystem, and are placed on the desktop for ease of access as well as historical reasons.

Trouble viewing audio levels in Voice Over tool
Hello,
I often record voice over into Final Cut Pro using the Voice Over tool. In the middle section of the Voice Over window there is a 'Level' meter that flashes Green to Yellow and Red, illustrating the level of audio being fed into the Mac. For some reason though, this has stopped working for me.
My set up is this: A Mic in our voice over booth connects to a Soundcraft 4 channel mixing desk via an XLR cable. The mixing desk is linked to a JVC HD tape desk, which is connected to the Mac via FireWire.
Previously, to capture Voice Over I set the tape deck to 'Line' input, in 'DV' mode and set the Voice Over tool to 'DV Audio' as the source.
I can see sound levels on the mixing desk. I can see sound levels on the tape deck, but I can't see sound levels on the Mac's VO tool. Despite this, it does still capture voice over (I just can't 'see' it).
This problem is annoying because it means Im unsure whether the Mac is actually receiving an audio feed or not unless I do a test recording first.
Any suggestions as to why the Voice Over tool would suddenly stop showing me Levels, would be greatly appreciated! My secondary Mac works fine when the AV settings are set to HDV, despite it receiving standard DV audio input. Whether FCP is set to DV or not doesn't seem to matter in this case.
In trying to resolve the issue I played around with DV/HDV settings within FCP and the Deck; trying different combinations, but with no success.
+To recap (just to clarify in my own head), the situation is this:+
+Both of my Macs, Primary and Secondary, happily record Voice Over, via the Voice Over tool.+
+The Mic in the sound room connects to a Mixing desk via an XLR cable. The mixing desk is also connected to 2 sets of headphones, one for the Artist and one for the Engineer. 2 audio jacks connect the mixing desk to the JVC tape deck. The JVC tape deck connects to my Mac via FireWire to the port at the rear of the Mac.+
+The issue is that the Primary Mac does not display audio Levels in the Voice Over tool, whilst it does on the Secondary Mac.+
+While Im recording Voice Over on my secondary Mac I can see that there is an Audio input because the Green/Yellow/Red bar flashes up. On my Primary mac this bar is inactive and therefore gives me no clues as to the level of audio being fed into the Mac.+ -
Flash audio level drop outs (Windows 8.1)
Hey,
Using adobe flash, I've been having issues with to audio nearly dropping out to nearly inaudible levels on mutiple websites. Anything that does use the flash player, it seems to be triggered when I plug in another device into the computer for use, or charging although it doesn't seem to be 100% consistant and seems less likely after reinitiating the flash player, but would happen after having the flash player open for a longer period of time then attaching a device. My current work around is to either load up a different browser e.g. Google Chrome, which will use it's own plugin container containing another instance of flash. Or to end task on flash from my task manager, then reload the page. which would restore proper audio levels. This does not appear to be specific to one webpage, or to one brower.

While steams loader was active in the background it would cause the flash audio to drop out. I don't know any reason why it would cause this, but have just disabled steam from starting up at all. Any insight on why these two programs would clash and cause audio issues would be greatly appreciated.

Problem with LCD display on 17" iMac G4
The LCD display on my iMac went wacky on me yesterday. It's as though one of the three primary colors no longer works. The screen has a green tinge to it, and anything that's supposed to be black shows up as green. I've reset everything, run the Hardware Tools diagnostics (no problems found), and changed resloutions, monitor depth, and brightness levels many times. No luck. The screen is readable although very ugly.
Obviously I can take it to an Apple Store, but does anyone have any idea what it might be? I've searched the net and the forums and can't find anything close, but I know I can't be the only one to experience this problem. I called a mac repair shop a few minutes ago, and they said that the logic board would need to be replaced. I just can't believe that because nothing else is a problem.
Please help. Thanks.
17" iMac G4 1Ghz Mac OS X (10.4.6)I "fixed" the problem a few days ago. Digging around here in the forums, I found another thread that gave explicit instructions on how to open the iMac and re-seat the connections. Here is the link (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=196785&start=30&tstart=30). It's a post from Androcles made on 3/26/06.
Just as he indicates, when I did this I found nothing to be loose at all, however upon putting it all back together, on the 2nd re-boot all was back to normal and still is. It's amazing how clear and crisp the screen is after suffering through the green hue for a few weeks...
Good luck, and feel free to ask me for help if necessary. -
Audio level in timeline does not match the source's clips audio level
When I playback the sequence the audio level increases a considerable amount (6 to 8 Decibels)
when compared to the audio of the source clip in the bin and the source quicktime located in the scratch folder.
As a result I'm led to believe the issue is local to the sequence. When I open the sequence clip in the viewer the audio has not been increased using the level slider (it displays 0 DB in the entry box). I'm editing a 1 1/2 hour sequence and the problems exists throughout the entire timeline. Can anybody recommend any solutions.
*All feedback is much appreciated.*Hi,
Looks like you resolved the issue, can you tell us what you did in case anyone else has the same problem.

Audio levels different from camera to Premiere Pro
Why is it that the audio levels on the camera can show the subject peaking right above -10dB, but when I bring the clips into Premiere, they are below -12dB and I always have to boost them?
Just to test this, I cranked up the volume on our camera's inputs to the point where it was clipping. When I took this clip into Premiere it still wasn't hitting 0dB. It was peaking into the yellow, even though the clip was completely distorted because of the clipping coming into the camera.
Is there a way to calibrate either Premiere Pro or our camera so that they match, so when you are peaking at -6dB on the camera, it's the same in Premiere Pro?
I know the solution probably involves a tone generator being used with the camera, which we have, but I'm not exactly sure what to do.>I cranked up the volume on our camera's inputs to the point where it was clipping. When I took this clip into Premiere it still wasn't hitting 0dB. It was peaking into the yellow, even though the clip was completely distorted because of the clipping coming into the camera.
What I think is you have run into is definitions of the dB. One has dBm and dBV in the electrical world, among a lot of others (for example sound pressure/power and different types like dBA, dBC, and so on within sound levels).
Anyway, to make this not to be a too deep lesson in deciBel (dB), it seem like your cameras define 0dB to be something different than what Premiere defines it to be. The dB presentation (what the display shows) is a logarithmic number depending on a reference level, meaning in this case, if the voltage (sound turned into electricity) hits for example 1 Vrms then we'll call that 0dB (which is probably what Premiere does, and maybe your camera uses 0,775 Vrms as 0dB reference).
Clear as mud so far, right, just wait for the following. Just kidding, but look up decibel in google, and you'll find a pretty complex world.
Bottom line:
I don't think you can get the dB levels in Premiere and your cameras to match, unless your cameras have a setting that defines the 0dB level. The best you can do, in my opinion, is to learn the difference and go from there as you have ("I always have to boost them"). But, also remember that if you do some audio stuff in Premiere that you want to record back onto tape, you'll have to go the other way, lessen the audio level.
Reference levels made by a tone generator is a fine way to learn the differences.
Dag
EDIT: Allthough it probably is a definition question, just never let your camera go over 0dB. As you have noticed, it will be distorted sound. The electric circuits on your camera won't handle over 0dB well. -
Unconsistency concerning level adjustment, master display and proofing
I'm opening a new thread on this since the other one (here) is already marked as answered claiming that Aperture 1.5.4 solves the problem, when in fact it does not. Here is my problem description which I also just submitted as a bug report:
Without any adjustments made, the display of the working copy does not match the display of the master image. The most prominent feature of this difference is that the shadow areas appear lighter in the master.
Now checking the level adjustment box, but without actually moving any slider there, already changes the appearence and histrogram of the working copy. It appears now to be the same as the master. Unchecking the box darkens the shadows again most the time, but not always.
With an unchecked levels box and in fullscreen mode with the film stripe automatically hidden, moving the mouse to the filmstrip so that it appears sometimes has the same effect on the image as checking the levels box, but not always.
Also, enabling onscreen-proofing with the color profile of the monitor (which effectively should change the working color space to that profile) makes the master image appear to be the same as the working copy without the level adjustment box checked.
To summarize, we have the following correspondecies
Light shadows:
- master display with onscreen-proofing disabled
- working copy without any adjustments, but level box checked
- sometimes working copy in fullscreen mode with mouse over automatically hidden film stripe
Dark shadows:
- master display with onscreen-proofing using the monitor display
- working copy without any adjustments, level box unchecked
I use a Canon 300D in RAW mode. Since exporting and displaying images in a viewer seems to show the "light shadows" version, my first idea for a work-around was to select all images without level adjustments and add a "null-adjustment" to them (level box checked, but sliders not moved). Unfortunately, there does not seem to be a way to make this kind of selection automatically (e.g. by using a filter), or am I missing something here? Any ideas on this are highly appreciated.

I bet you are fighting with Pulseaudio. KDE now pulls it in and uses it (IIRC).
Pulse audio allows the control of audio levels on a source by source basis. The master volume and balance are set in Pulse audio. Amixer output is just one of the sources available, and the volume setting is the relative volume of the source, but pulseaudio defines the maximum level for each source and scales it accordingly.
Try emerging pavucontrol and see if the controls in there make any sense. It also provides audio level meters on a source by source basis (They really don't behave like broadcast Vu or Peak-power meters -- but that is not terribly important)
Well after reading this I checked to see if pulse was installed but the only thing that was listed as being installed was libpulse. It doesn't seem like pulse audio is installed, so I don't think this is my issue. -
Color management on LCD displays, need help
Dear all,
I know the same topic has been already raised so many times, but i just can't help to ask it again. I am sorry for that, I just realize I will at least get a concept of what to do next. Ppl here are helpful.
I don't own any Apple monitor. I have a Macmini, connected to a new SONY LCD display, SDM-HS95P, by DVI connector.
As everyone knows the situation of LCD monitors. They have higher contrast, brigther image that traditional CRT monitors. That's why photographers and graphic designers are blaming all the time.
And now, I face the same as they do. My monitor is no more "WYSIWYG". The red i have here, may become another red on printing. The yellow I have here, may become orange on CRT.
I calibrated with the Colorsync of OSX, I decreased the contrast and bright level of my monitor, but they dont help much.
Someone suggested here to purchase color management hardwares. Of coz i know they are helpful. But the point is, how can a little student to afford a such expensive hardware for only doing color management?
Apple displays are all in LCD these days, how does Apple help their users to overcome the mentioned situation?
I know this maybe just a never-ending question, but i think ppl here may come up with some new ideas in resolving this.
Please kindly help, much appreciate! Thanks!

KKCHUNG
Macmini 1.25 GHZ/ 1GB ram Mac OS X (10.4.3)Hi.
Apple cinema displays do not offer the user the ability to adjust the contrast. You need to be able to adjust contrast when calibrating the 2nd monitor to match the target white and black luminence values of the first monitor.
Contrast is needed in order to adjust the white luminence value of the monitor you are calibrating. You need to be able to adjust the black and white luminence values of monitor 2 when using the white and black luminence target values from monitor 1 if you want both monitors to be calibrated so that they use the same (same but seperate) profiles.
Colorvision (makers of spyder2 pro) has indicated that this is a huge issue with the ACD monitors and they are currently researching a workaround.
If anyone knows how to fix this... please tell me (us)... thanks. -
I now I can boost the audio levels in the timeline
but what is a good range for the recorded audio levels
when they first come in to FCP ?
I have footage that's coming in at -2.4 dbs and peaking
a little above that and under -1.8
I assume this is lower than optimum
thanksThe dynamic range of your mix is dependent on the final viewing environment. For example, movie theaters have large, relatively expensive sound systems that can reproduce a large dynamic range. Television speakers are much smaller, and often the listening environment has more ambient noise, so very quiet sounds may not even be noticeable unless the overall signal is compressed and the level increased, which reduces the dynamic range.
For example, television stations normally accommodate only 6 dB between the average loudness and the peaks. Dolby Digital feature film soundtracks, on the other hand, can accommodate up to 20 dB between average and peak levels. This is why loud sounds in a movie theater sound so loud: they are much louder than the average level.
When you mix your final audio, you choose a consistent reference for the average level. When you choose the average reference level, you are actually choosing how much additional headroom you have before your signal distorts. The higher you set the average level, the less safety margin you have for peaks in the signal. This means that the loudest sounds in your mix cannot be much louder than the average levels, and so the mix is less dynamic.
Acceptable amount of dynamic range:
Theatrical Dolby Digital 20 dB
Average videotape 12 dB
Television broadcast 6 dB
If you set the reference level of the Final Cut Pro floating audio meter to –20 dBFS, you have nearly 20 dB of headroom, since 0 dBFS is the digital limit for the loudest sound. If you set the reference level in your sequence to –12 dBFS instead, you have less headroom. Even though the average level of your audio is higher, there won’t be as much dynamic range.
How much dynamic range you allow in your audio mix depends on its ultimate destination. If you’re editing a program for TV broadcast, a reference level of –12 dBFS is fine, since you are only allowed 6 dB of dynamic range anyway. But if you’re working on a production to be shown in movie theaters, consider using a reference level closer to –18 or even –20 dBFS (both of these are frequently used standards).
Remember that the ultimate goal is to ensure that audio doesn’t peak over 0 dBFS in your mix (as displayed in the Final Cut Pro audio meters) and won’t peak over +3 dB or so on an analog meter.

A PACK encoding - reduction of audio level
Hi all,
I always use the Apack Apple utility to encode all my audio mixes. I'm a professional sound designer and during the mix, i use a properly calibrated equipment.
All files are properly calibrated AND in phase.
Sometime i've find this following problem on my encoded stuff.
When i finish an audio encoding process i recheck the audiovideo playback through my dvdstudiopro 3.0 simulator and in some point in the video i can hear a strange "automatic" reduction of audio level, randomly, not in the part where the audio is hight. This happens also on the mastered file on dvd.
I would like to inform that my mix was controlled before goes to encoding session.
This is not a frequntly finded problem, just in rare case.
This is my setting for apack
Kbs 192 (stereo) 448 (DD)
compression none
Dialog norm -31 db
No low pass
No Rf over modulation
thanks to all
MarkAll those settings look correct for A.Pack. One thing to check, however, is that your files are REALLY set to -31db for DNV. Open them back up in A.Pack and check (there's some option for File Info or somethingorother to display an AC3 file's settings). A.Pack has a very annoying bug where, if you type -31 in the field but you don't press Enter, the change does not happen and your files end up back at -27 (with the resulting "pumping" of audio).

What is best way to get LCD display for Mac mini?
Just got Mac Mini but when I connect it to my Samsung LCD the display quality is crap. What is the best way to get HD resolution, (maximum quality) from this set up?
Thanks,
I did try all of the settings on the LCD display. It is 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. Built in 2011 by Samsung as a HD TV, computer monitor and audio/video combo. I just let the Mac mini select the appropriate settings when I did initial startup last night. I It came with an HDMI to DVI adapter which (to me) implies I need to get the male end of the DVI adapter to connect to the 9 pin (PC input). Current HDMI is working but just not the "wow factor" that I expected from the Mac mini. Compatibiltiy issue of some kind; input/output, settings, software update, or user error Was trying to avoid getting a new monitor. -
Audio levels before / after export???
hi,
i'm using a background audio track in one of my adventure videos and when i am in PProCS5, the audio is at a good level BUT after i export the video, the audio seems to have gone up a few notches.
any ideas?
i only edit the audio levels in PProCS5 down in the audio section of the timeline. i add keyframes and then drag the audio level up and down. is that the right way to do it? is it possible to increase / decrease the audio level by more than the allowable 6dB?
am i missing a setting when i export the audio?
i mean, it should all sound the same, in PPro and when i play it in VLC or on my TV?
thanks! In PrPro, there are at least 3 ways to adjust the Levels/Volume of the Audio:
At the Clip-level, one can Rt-click and adjust the Audio Gain. This is often the least desirable method, but can be used.
At the Clip-level, one can use the fixed Effect>Volume, and easily Keyframe this Effect. This can be done on the Timeline, or via the Effects Control Panel, and this is the most common method. Remember, this is at the Clip-level, so those Keyframes will follow that Clip, should it be moved.
At the Audio Track-level, one can use the Audio Mixer to automate the Sends, and set Track Keyframes to control the Levels. This will apply Track Keyframes, which will remain on that Track, even if one replaces the Clips on that Track. The frequency of these Track Keyframes can be adjusted in Edit>Preferences. Remember, these are Track Keyframes, unlike the Clip Keyframes above.
The display of either Clip, or Track Volume Keyframes can be toggled in the Track Header.
There are several other Levels/Volume Effects, like Normalize, but they are really something a bit different.
I agree with Jim's suggestion on doing a DVD (I use RW discs to test - no more coasters), and test the Levels on my reference audio system.
Good luck,

Master Audio Level Not Showing
My individual audio levels show but the master is on and off. When I get it, I can't figure out how I got it. Any ideas?
Scotwith me, I was trouble shooting Premiere CC 2014.2's inability for proper 5.1 sound mix.
I can hear all audio tracks fine, and all tracks display in the audio mixer except for the master is displayed intermittantly. It makes for trouble shooting Premiere's inability 2014.2 to properly map the Lfe channel pretty tough when the master 5.1 track will not display.
WIth 2014.2 the Lfe bleeds into the left front track.
I have trouble shot this (along with many others) before and got nowhere. A recent awakening of one of those threads had me retrace my frustrating attempts. Further frustrated when I could hear the Lfe being bled into the front left channel, knew it was bleeding, but could not see any channel in the master output, only could see input channels.
my trouble shooting was diverted into just getting the master audio track to display the 6 channel output of the 5.1 audio.
After actually locking in the master audio output display, all attempts were futile to achieve proper 5.1 audio mapping.
I paste a link to one of the many threads here.
