Audio Levels
I now I can boost the audio levels in the timeline
but what is a good range for the recorded audio levels
when they first come in to FCP ?
I have footage that's coming in at -2.4 dbs and peaking
a little above that and under -1.8
I assume this is lower than optimum
thanks
The dynamic range of your mix is dependent on the final viewing environment. For example, movie theaters have large, relatively expensive sound systems that can reproduce a large dynamic range. Television speakers are much smaller, and often the listening environment has more ambient noise, so very quiet sounds may not even be noticeable unless the overall signal is compressed and the level increased, which reduces the dynamic range.
For example, television stations normally accommodate only 6 dB between the average loudness and the peaks. Dolby Digital feature film soundtracks, on the other hand, can accommodate up to 20 dB between average and peak levels. This is why loud sounds in a movie theater sound so loud: they are much louder than the average level.
When you mix your final audio, you choose a consistent reference for the average level. When you choose the average reference level, you are actually choosing how much additional headroom you have before your signal distorts. The higher you set the average level, the less safety margin you have for peaks in the signal. This means that the loudest sounds in your mix cannot be much louder than the average levels, and so the mix is less dynamic.
Acceptable amount of dynamic range:
Theatrical Dolby Digital 20 dB
Average videotape 12 dB
Television broadcast 6 dB
If you set the reference level of the Final Cut Pro floating audio meter to –20 dBFS, you have nearly 20 dB of headroom, since 0 dBFS is the digital limit for the loudest sound. If you set the reference level in your sequence to –12 dBFS instead, you have less headroom. Even though the average level of your audio is higher, there won’t be as much dynamic range.
How much dynamic range you allow in your audio mix depends on its ultimate destination. If you’re editing a program for TV broadcast, a reference level of –12 dBFS is fine, since you are only allowed 6 dB of dynamic range anyway. But if you’re working on a production to be shown in movie theaters, consider using a reference level closer to –18 or even –20 dBFS (both of these are frequently used standards).
Remember that the ultimate goal is to ensure that audio doesn’t peak over 0 dBFS in your mix (as displayed in the Final Cut Pro audio meters) and won’t peak over +3 dB or so on an analog meter.
With a little help from the Final Cut Pro User Manual, "Audio Levels, Meters, and Output Channels". Pages 58 - 59.

Trouble viewing audio levels in Voice Over tool
Hello,
I often record voice over into Final Cut Pro using the Voice Over tool. In the middle section of the Voice Over window there is a 'Level' meter that flashes Green to Yellow and Red, illustrating the level of audio being fed into the Mac. For some reason though, this has stopped working for me.
My set up is this: A Mic in our voice over booth connects to a Soundcraft 4 channel mixing desk via an XLR cable. The mixing desk is linked to a JVC HD tape desk, which is connected to the Mac via FireWire.
Previously, to capture Voice Over I set the tape deck to 'Line' input, in 'DV' mode and set the Voice Over tool to 'DV Audio' as the source.
I can see sound levels on the mixing desk. I can see sound levels on the tape deck, but I can't see sound levels on the Mac's VO tool. Despite this, it does still capture voice over (I just can't 'see' it).
This problem is annoying because it means Im unsure whether the Mac is actually receiving an audio feed or not unless I do a test recording first.
Any suggestions as to why the Voice Over tool would suddenly stop showing me Levels, would be greatly appreciated! My secondary Mac works fine when the AV settings are set to HDV, despite it receiving standard DV audio input. Whether FCP is set to DV or not doesn't seem to matter in this case.
In trying to resolve the issue I played around with DV/HDV settings within FCP and the Deck; trying different combinations, but with no success.
+To recap (just to clarify in my own head), the situation is this:+
+Both of my Macs, Primary and Secondary, happily record Voice Over, via the Voice Over tool.+
+The Mic in the sound room connects to a Mixing desk via an XLR cable. The mixing desk is also connected to 2 sets of headphones, one for the Artist and one for the Engineer. 2 audio jacks connect the mixing desk to the JVC tape deck. The JVC tape deck connects to my Mac via FireWire to the port at the rear of the Mac.+
+The issue is that the Primary Mac does not display audio Levels in the Voice Over tool, whilst it does on the Secondary Mac.+
+While Im recording Voice Over on my secondary Mac I can see that there is an Audio input because the Green/Yellow/Red bar flashes up. On my Primary mac this bar is inactive and therefore gives me no clues as to the level of audio being fed into the Mac.+ -
Flash audio level drop outs (Windows 8.1)
Hey,
Using adobe flash, I've been having issues with to audio nearly dropping out to nearly inaudible levels on mutiple websites. Anything that does use the flash player, it seems to be triggered when I plug in another device into the computer for use, or charging although it doesn't seem to be 100% consistant and seems less likely after reinitiating the flash player, but would happen after having the flash player open for a longer period of time then attaching a device. My current work around is to either load up a different browser e.g. Google Chrome, which will use it's own plugin container containing another instance of flash. Or to end task on flash from my task manager, then reload the page. which would restore proper audio levels. This does not appear to be specific to one webpage, or to one brower.

While steams loader was active in the background it would cause the flash audio to drop out. I don't know any reason why it would cause this, but have just disabled steam from starting up at all. Any insight on why these two programs would clash and cause audio issues would be greatly appreciated.

I no longer have sound when playing my clips through adobe premiere elements 12. How to I correct this problem? I have checked all audio levels and there is no mute on etc. I updated to 12.1, but still no sound in any clips. Even not on old files which used to work.
bfun
What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 12/12.1 running on? Can we assume that this audio plays back OK
on the same computer when you are using a computer player independent of Premiere Elements?
What are the properties of these clips that worked before but do not know with regard to sound
For now, I will assume that you are working on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit.
Have you checked the Edit Menu/Preferences/Audio Hardware ASIO settings? Do you have any 3rd party audio devices incorporated in your computer environment?
Please delete the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file and, if that does not work, then the whole 12.0 Folder in which the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file exists. The Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit path is
Local Disk C
Users
Owner
AppData
Roaming
Adobe
Premiere Elements
12.0
and, in the 12.0 Folder, is the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file that you delete. If that does not work, then delete the whole 12.0 Folder in which the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file exists. Make sure that you are working with Folder Option "Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives" active so that you can see the complete path cited.
Do you have installation files or installation disc with the purchased serial number in case we need to resort to uninstall/reinstall?
We will be watching for your follow up.

Setting audio level points?
I am trying to change the level of an audio in a sequence. I double clicked the audio clip to open the waveform in the Viewer. I know there is a way to select various spots on the audio waveform and mark them. Then you can drag the audio level line to a new setting to adjust that part of the waveform. But I don't know how to create the spots on the waveform. I can't find the answer in the Help manual.
Thanks for any info. You need to select the Pen Tool which is to the right of the timeline.
You can also do it by pressing p
Then click the pink "level" line of the audio and a keyframe will be created. Click further along and you can drag the sound up or down etc.

Audio Levels in Final Cut Pro 6.0.5
Is it possible to destructively alter the audio levels of a source clip to be higher than +12db?
Also, similarly, is it possible to destructively alter the midrange frequencies?
I have a lot of material to work through, and applying audio filters seems unecessarily time consuming. Any suggestions?
JaredYou could edit the audio into a nested sequence, then raise the levels on the clip inside the nested sequence, then in the parent sequence raise the levels on the clip representing the nest. You could even do another level of nesting and raise the levels again. You could even do another level of nesting...

Audio levels on an external monitor vary during playback when using HDMI audio
I've been having issues with movie playback using a large 1080p HDMI TV. During playback the audio level will come in strong, go faint, then go strong again, but not on any sort of pattern I could discern. It did this on three seperate movies legally purchased via iTunes. I get audio and video without trouble, its just the audio goes soft when it shouldn't.
If you remember the VHS days and "MACROVISION" encoding, then you have an idea what it was doing, although it was the audio levels, not the video playback.
Is this a fault of the system, a DRM gremlin, or something else?I think you may be onto something with the graphics card concept. The problem I am having only exists when I am working on an HD project. When I switched back to DV-NTSC then the monitor is fine during playback.
Yes, I am routing my external monitor through my DV deck, which is not an HD deck - so again, that could be another weak link in the chain.
This is the first HD project that I am editing, so obviously a few kinks still need to be worked out. My internal hard drive has 1.5 gigs of ram but I am not sure what the specs are on the graphics card. -
Audio levels automation in real time?
Hi,
Is it possible to automate the audio levels in REAL TIME? (using the mouse or an external mixer controller)
(automating one audio level at a time would be enough)
Thanks!PPlease use feedback to make a feature request. We really do need some audio mixing tools, even simple ones.

Different Audio Levels in Edit View vs. Multitrack View
Here's what happens...
I begin a new session. I then import a .wav file and it appears in the left column. I double-click the .wav so I'm in Edit View. When I play the clip, it ranges from about -9 to -6 dB. Now I go back to Multitrack View without having edited or changed the .wav in any way. I send the clip to Track 1. When it plays back, it now ranges from about -12 to -9 dB on the levels meter...this is an issue. In terms of trying to balance audio levels within a session, something that sounds good in one view might be too loud or too soft when playing back in the other. It's my understanding that regardless of Edit View or Multitrack View, a .wav should play at the same exact levels (unless you tamper with the mixer which I have not done).
So my question is, why is there a 3dB difference between playing a clip in Edit View vs. Multitrack View?Try setting view>advance session properties>mixing>

Audio levels on my SONY PCM D50 portable recorder
Hello,
I am unable to get any audio levels on my SONY PCM D50 recorder. I use it very infrequently and i has never failed me otherwise, but suddenly this problem.
I am sure that i have set to MIC (as sooposed to line), I DO NOT have it on the -20db seeting either. The only thing unusual is that when i booted it yesterday, i was trying to connect it to my video camera as an on camera mic with an XLR to mini cable, and i may have inserted the mini into the wrong input first and messed something up.
But now It shows no signal with the internam stereo mics or an external mic, although i see some registration of a signal at -42db wheni have the recording levels cranked up all the way.
please help!Hello, it sounds like the cables were connected to the PCM-D50’s external microphone input jack (rather than the recorders line output jack). Can you please confirm the setup?

Audio levels on the timeline & Audio Mixer
I'm confused why when you change the audio levels on a clip using the Audio Mixer it changes the levels for everything on the track?
I'm from an FCP & Avid background where you can adjust each clip using the Audio Mixer, is there a way I can do this? I find using the yellow sliders in each clip is very unaccurate and having to open each audio clip in the viewer is such a time waster.
Thanks, AndyAudio in Premiere Pro is different--but quite a lot, in many circumstances. I'd recommend going through the help file's audio section to get a better idea of what some of the main controls are: Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 & CS5.5 * Editing Audio
But to answer your question more directly: the Audio Mixer controls track volume, not clip volume. By default, the Audio Mixer isn't set to drop keyframes, so it will affect the level of a track as a whole; check out Recording audio mixes to get more background on setting up the Audio Mixer for automation, so that you can record level changes.
The rubberbands (the yellow lines you're referring to) can be more finitely controlled by holding down the Ctrl/Cmd key as you drag; the values will move in smaller increments, then.
You don't have to load a clip into the Source Monitor to adjust the levels, if you want to adjust by the numbers. Just single click a clip in the sequence, and if the Effects Controls panel is forward, you'll be able to adjust the volume with the standard effects sliders/dials. Note that keyframing is enabled by default for the Level property, so if all you want to do is adjust the total level of a clip, it might be faster to do it in the sequence.
Audio mixing in Premiere Pro is pretty capable and the feature set is pretty deep, but I'll grant you it's a little overwhelming coming from a different NLE. I don't know if any of the previous helps you, but post back with any specific questions and we'll try to figure out a way to approach this in a fashion that makes sense to you. -
How do I adjust audio levels at various points on timeline??
How do I make volume level adjustments in a single clip on the FCP-X timeline? I have a music bed and need to adjust audio levels at various points in the song. In past Final Cut programs. This should be very easy but I can't find how to do it in Final Cut Pro-X. I don't want to adjust the entire clip.
Also, I recorded voice on channel 2 and shot gun on channel 1. I only want the voice (channel 2). How can I select a individual channel once I have edited the piece. I know I can re-import the video and designate which channel to bring in but I don't want to have to do that.
Thanks!!Select a range and lower the level, or hold the Option key to click on the level line to add a keyframe.

Audio Levels on different tracks-How do I adjust them
I have a series of inteviews on my edirol which come across fine into ST. I've moved into production and have recorded some fixes and patches to complete the interview. These were done directly into ST using a mic. This is where the problem occurs, I can't seem to find where to adjust the audio levels for the new tracks I recorded. Having read through the ST doco, its brevity is to be admired. Help, any help appreciated.
I'm new to the sound field, currently studying journalism and audio is part of the brief.
regards, WayneHi WayneAu,
1- In the audio tracks section, click the 'envelopes disclosure triangle'
2- In the 'volume envelope' portion of the track (it looks purple) double-click on the dark line. This adds a keyframe.
By clicking and dragging a keyframe you can adjust the volume for specific portions of the track, perform fade-ups or fade-downs, etc,.
I hope this helps.
In Solidarity,
Alain

Low audio levels on itunes purchased music video's
Can anyone tell me how to boost the audio levels on purchased itunes music video's ?
I have purchased a few videos lately from the itunes music store and occasionally I find the odd one which has very low audio levels. I assume that itunes has not monitored some video/audio files closely enough when importing them into the in tunes system itself and the audio levels have fallen a little low on certain tracks. Have a look at some of the Eurythmics songs - 'Angel', 'Missionary Man', or 'Best of You' by the Foo Fighters for example.I have boosted these tracks by 100% within the in itunes track options, but its still a very low level compared to some of the other tracks I have downloaded.
I tried to import one of these video files to Mpeg Stream Clip to see if I could use the audio boost function within that program but it didn't like the video file ? I presume because it was an itunes purchased video, therefore a protected file.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this or what setting I should be using, doing with Mpeg Streamclip to fix this problame if this program can fix this issue ?
Windows XP
Windows XP
Windows XPyes i have exactly same problem. Was all working fine till I upgraded to iTunes v8.1.
TV shows, everything works fine... its just music videos dont show the video, no matter which setting I choose?
Help please!!! -
I recently got a copy of FCE and am still getting used to it. I was wondering if you could change the audio levels in certain points. I've been using premiere for a number of years and on that you can click on the level line which inserts a point at which you can either peak and troughs.
My project is basically an interview with the a band and at certain intervals im inserting live footage. i have a track playing in the background during the interview and would like it to suddenly get louder in the places where theres footage of the subject in action. How do i go about this?
Also i have another Project that im working on which involves my recent trip to california. Basically when capturing my clips i would like each tape to be saved into seperate folders and bins. So in the program i can quickly find my clips which would be in seperate bins DAY1-DAY2-DAY3 etc.
How do i go about doing this also?
Any Help would be much appreciated
thanksTurn on the clip overlays in the Timeline (Opt-W). Hold the option key and click on the pink audio level line to add a keyframe. Add another keyframe, grab it and pull it down. Not unlike Premiere.
Make a new bin (Cmd-B) and name it. Right-click on it and select Make Capture Bin. Anything you capture will go into that bin. For the next day's material make another bin and set that as the capture bin. You could also just capture the material and move it into appropriate bins. -
Audio levels low in final cut pro 5
my levells seem low in final cut, tho the master fader of the audio mixer is set to its default zero. I know they are low too because i made omf files from my time line having boosted the levels, which still had to be boosted considerably in the final mix suite. The audio levels on the camera tape were recorded fine. can anyone help?
The audio clip beeps if it is not in the standard format for FCE.
The standard format is PCM Stereo 16bit integer 48kHz.
If the audio is not standard you must render the clip in FCE (Render Only/Item Level or Render All/Item Level) before editing.
The best way in any case is to import audio already standard.
