Audio Line In/Internal Mic ignored if FireWire DV camera seen first?

I've been working streaming a broadcast that is intended to consist of audio fed into an MBP via its line in and video fed in via FireWire.
However, I've found quite often that if after boot the audio input is plugged in too quickly after the FireWrie connection is hot plugged, the MBP will not "see" the incoming audio, nor will it see audio coming from the internal mic; I can plug the cable in and out several times but the Sound preference pane never shows input audio.
However, if I unplug the FireWire and plug it back in, it seems the MBP will continue to see the audio in and the FireWire camera.
This also works if I wait to make sure the MBP can "see" the line in before hot-plugging the FW camera.
Has anyone else seen this?  Anyone know of any other workarounds other than to make sure the line in audio is "seen" before plugging in the camera?
This is within the context of Ustream, but the audio isn't even being seen at the Finder level.

  • Audio line in and mic both recording

Hi, both the line in and the built in mic are recording at the same time , it doesnt look so in system prefs > sound > line in ( I have built in line in selected) as when I make a sound the level meter does not move , however when I start recording in iMovie 09 ambient sounds from the area are captured as well as the sound from the line in.
    please help.
I need to get some projects done this weekend and I just can't with the macbook working like this.
    hoping it's something simple I've missed .

    Hi Lyssa,
I use a professional dj mixer which is fine for going directly in usually, if I used a specific sound card (I use MOTU cards for desktop/studio work) I'd have a better quality audio sound but I just don't need that quality for mobile demo work which is why I need the input on the book to work with the iSight/iMovie without recording from the internal mic at the same time...
    Something is broken somewhere IMHO
The thing is I have to rely on the mixer going directly in at the moment for mobile work, it works fine on other notebooks, looks like a call to Applecare is in the offing....
I guess I may as well, there are a few other problems with this Macbook...like it's started cracking already and I've only had it two months, the graphics unfortunately look to have an issue also as when I scroll text is flashing/scatty etc.
looks like I've got me a lemon.
ah well..I'll have a look at the new 13" MBP me thinks... it should be more solid?..but then again it's aluminium...sorry I digress

  • All audio input dead -- internal mic, USB mic

Hey folks, for some reason my iMac G5 suddenly will not recognize any sources of audio input.
In the Sound pref pane, the "internal microphone" option under the Input tab is not even there anymore. Only line-in.
In addition, when I check input levels with an external (USB) mic, I get zilch. Otherwise, the USB on this machine works fine, and furthermore this same mic works without a hitch on a G4 Powerbook.
Since this is happening on two very different hardware channels, it must be a software issue.
I've tried resetting the system's audio by restarting, running Garage Band, running Audacity, anything I could think of. Nothing works.
As to what could have triggered this change, three events happened recently around the same time involving audio on this machine: iTunes 10.0.1 update; Rogue Amoeba SoundSource update from 2.0 to 2.5; and a PRAM reset when I recently had all audio output also die. (The PRAM reset fixed the output issue.)
    Any ideas?

  • Internal mic heard also when another input source is selected

    Hi all,
I am having a problem hearing my internal microphone even though I selected another sound input. As in System Preferences - Sound - selecting iMic USB audio system as my microphone is using this interface.
For some reason my recordings record both my mic and internal microphone!?
I notice in the Sound - Input tab another Sound input showing: "Unknown USB Audio Device"? This showed when I used GB for recording something from my stereo headphone out jack to my iMac's Audio line in port which recorded successfully. This was the first time I noticed the above problem which may have something to do with it?
Any ideas would be much appreciated...

Thx HangTime, the link told me to change Input in GB Preferences to my iMic interface and problem solved! The "Unknown USB Audio Device" was something else... I connected the Logitech QuickCam Pro 4000 for this to appear.
    Thanks Again, Steve

  • New iMac: how can I get the internal mic to turn off?

I always have Facetime cameras and internal mics disabled for privacy. Cameras are easy to block, but the Sound pane doesn't allow me to disable the mic, only turn the input down to the bottom. Supposedly, its off, right?
Poking around in Prefs, I saw that my supposedly "disabled" microphone showed a response in the Dictation & Speech pane VU meter when I would snap my fingers around the bezel. Even worse, it showed a response to conversation in another room, the refrigerator starting up in the kitchen 25 feet away, and even an increase in ambient noise. Going back to the Sound prefs, the mic input is still turned "down" and doesn't show a response when I snap my fingers.
So... how is it that this supposedly defeated mic is working normally, and in fact exceeding expectations, despite being effectively turned "off" in the Sound pane?
Basically, this iMac is a very expensive bug sitting on my desk. Is there a way to properly disable the mic in the system? I can't even find the thing to block it physically, like with bezel cameras. There is no place for an external mic to plug in either, which would physically bypass any internal mic on my previous Macs.

Interested parties may want to know...
I went to the Apple Store two weeks ago for a replacement Airport Express. While I was waiting for it, I struck up a conversation with one of the store staff, and brought up the mic issue. We spent a good ten minutes going through the few ways of securing the mic, and we determined that every iMac made has the ability to continue listening evne though dictation is shut off. Unlike old Macs, you can't disable the mic in the Sound prefs. You can't turn off listening in the Dictation prefs - even though turning off "dictation" means the dictation part of the OS stops listening. The only way to definintely shut off the "listening" part is to keep the Audio Devices panel open, select Built-in Microphone, and make sure the master mute button is checked. Also, you have to leave the Dictation & Speech pane open in Preferences to watch the mic display.
Even so, going to any other preference panel and then back to Dictation & Speech means that the master mute will uncheck itelf and the mic goes back to listening mode.
The staff member was quite frustrated by this and said it appears the only way to stop the iMac from listening with any certainty would be to block the mic, just like millions of users block the Facetime camera with a piece of tape.
I suppose I should admit defeat at this point, and maybe I should have long ago recognized that no matter what the system tells us, we shouldn't trust it. Simply clicking on a radio button to disable what in all actuality is really a room bug shouldn't have us letting out a sigh of relief and saying "Wow I'm glad I was able to stop that security issue by trusting the machine to let me know when it was listening."
In another year my Apple Care will run out. Then I'm going to take this iMac to my local authorized service center to have a hybrid drive installed and the internal memory maxed out. While they're in there, I'll have the mic physically removed.

  • Powerbook internal mic, audio line in

Is there any way to turn off the internal mic? Anytime I try to use the line in port, the internal mic creates problems. Also, is there a way in Garageband (or any other Mac program) that you can use to plug in a stereo and transfer cassettes to a burnable file? I haven't been able to get the line in to work right. Thanks!!

  • Audio line in with Firewire?

    Thanks in advance...
We're doing a webcast with an older, cheaper Sony mini DV camera. The camera has an audio auto level function (that cannot be defeated), making the audio from the camera worthless for our purposes. I need to capture video through the camera's FireWire, but get the audio through my MacBookPro's line in, so we can use our mixer.
I called Apple to make sure I could do this before I bought Final Cut Express, but I can't find any way to get this done. I'm assuming I'd have to alter an Easy Setup, but I'm not sure how.
    HELP!
    Thanks again,
    Doug Dye

    hey there,
i used to record 3 cams & stereo audio for theatre produtions. i used an audio mixer w/ 2-3 mics & switcher. all analog but i ran the audio & video signals into a MiniDV cam i was using as a deck & had no issues. i wasn't able to defeat the cam's limiting but i was able to get good levels from my mixer prior to the audio entering my miniDV cam/deck. generally w/ mic close to source, the cam's limiting circuitry doesn't see/hear much of anything else, so it doesn't try to equalise close & distant sounds. also if you use directional mics you get less pick-up of ambient/room sound.
you might want to give it a try. plug your mics into an audio mixer(borrow one to try if you don't have one) then into/through your miniDV, check your levels on the mixer(use 'phones or speakers) & on miniDV if it has 'phones jack. what do you have to lose? sometimes you gotta jerry-rig, drop back & punt. i've got nearly 30 years of audio production experience-Recording, Theatre, bands i've been in- & 22 years of video production. just so you don't think i'm talking out the side of my neck.
FCE is really designed for post-production of your footage, not production of footage.
    good luck.

  • Inspiron 1525 not able to select internal mic for webcam, nor is it showing up on Control Panel, Sound, Audio Devices

Initial problem was Dell Webcam video recording records no sound.
In Control Panel, Device Manager, Sound Video and Game Controllers there are two High Definition Audio Devices listed: Location 1 (Internal High Definition Audio Bus) - I deduce this is the internal mic; and Location 2 (Internal High Definition Audio Bus) - I deduce this is external microphone jack. Both have the same driver version.
The Control Panel, Sound, Recordings Tab showed 2 devices that looked identical except the bars that show green with volume were only on the first one, which is also the default one, and would detect sound if you got real close to the webcam mic when talking. Both devices displayed as 'working'.
Accessories, Sound Recorder recordings are silent no matter how close you get to internal webcam mic.
Dell WebCam Audio Source tab has two selections, both reading Microphone (3 - High Definition Audio Device). Both selections record sound with the EXTERNAL MIC jack. There is no way to select the internal webcam mic, it is not an option.
Per instructions found on the web, I uninstalled the first device only in Device Manager and rebooted. The same driver version as before was installed. But now the settings have changed. Device Mgr still shows Loc 1 and Loc 2. However, under the Sound, Recordings tab there are still 2 devices, but the first one says 'currently unavailable' , is still the default, and the sound bars that go green for audio testing are on the SECOND device now instead of the first one. If you check the Properties for each device, they BOTH are showing the same location Location 2 (Internal High Definition Audio Bus), i.e., the external mic jack.  Loc 1 device (built in mic) is not showing up!!
Accessories Sound Recorder works with the EXTERNAL mic. (How does it know which one to use, it's not giving me a choice?)
So the Location 1 device (internal mic) is not showing up anywhere besides the device manager. I want to use the internal mic for skype and webcam. Somehow I need to get the Loc 1 device to show up on the Sound - Recording tab and in the Webcam Audio Source list? What do I do?
Thank you in advance for your help.

    This is Vista.
Go to the Inspiron 1525 support page. Find the small blue "Change OS" and click on the arrow. Select Vista. Then download and install these 3 items with a restart between each one.
    1. Dell System Software in the System Utilities category.
    2. Intel Mobile Chipset in the Chipset category.
    3. Sigmatel audio driver in the Audio category.
See if it works any better after you get the Sigmatel driver installed.

    Hello schneids,
I see that you are having start up problems with your HP computer. I have a couple of suggestions that may help with your issues.
Here is a link to some troubleshooting steps that may help resolve your issues.
If you are still having trouble I would suggest testing the power adapter or trying a different power adapter. Most retailers will let you try a power adapter on the computer to see if it works.
    Let me know what happens.

  • Only internal mic reords even when line in selected

    Hi all
I hope some one cane help with this frustrating problem, I have purchased a 15" MacBook Pro with 2gig HDDR, I have recorded guitar successfully in the past, but recently updated GBand to 3.0.4 (104.7) now when I select an instrument channel, it only records from the internal Mic even when I select, Line In from the System Prefrences, the input registers on the input level meter in the system prefrences pane, but not in the Garageband mixer display, and when I press record GBand only records from interlnal Mic. I have selected all inputs on track info, and have moved slider as far as I can, but still no sound is registered on track, I did notice when I came back to do some more work on one project a panel popped up to say that song had not been saved in iLife? it asked if I wanted to do so so I pressed ok, hope this did not cause problem?
    MacBook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

You have to select line-in in GarageBand's
preferences. (That's a difference between Intel Macs
    and Power PC Macs.)
    Hi Christoph,
I've had the Apple set up for a few weeks, I'm trying ti figure things out for myself. I'm a bit stumped...
I've got this same prob (amongst a few others...) I've got the iMac, and can't turn the internal mic off either. I'm a wee bit lost mate, have you any ideas?
    Thanks for your time...

  • High pitch noise when recording audio using internal mic

The issue I am having is with the internal mic. When recording audio using quicktime or garageband. It is a high pitch noise that stays whether i am speaking or not. The fix i found was to lower the input volume of the mic in system preferences. However, this causes my voice to be recorded so low that audio is barely usable unless volume is all the way up. Looking around the web I found this gem:
    http://www.usingmac.com/2009/6/18/recording-speech-with-garageband-2009
This help me get rid of the high pitch noise for Garageband. The noise still there for Quicktime. Any ideas on how I can keep the same mic input volume with out having to listen to the high pitch noise?
    Any help is appreciated.

Did you do the usual stuff, such as reset PRAM?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
There are some sound settings in PRAM, although I think it's only for sound output.
Also, as a test, I would create a new admin user account in System Preferences Accounts pane
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8235.html
Log out and log in to the new account (do not use Fast User Switching). In the new account, try recording something using QuickTime, and note if this problem recurs. If it does not, you have eliminated a few possible causes, such as a problem with the overall system installation or a hardware issue, and isolated the problem to something in your normal user account.

  • Internal mic won't record when headphone is in the audio jack

I've tried toggling the monitor on and off and plugging and unplugging the headphones. I just want to be able to record a track and then layer vocals on top while listening to the first track through headphones. But when I attempt this it seems as though the internal mic becomes disengaged? PLEASE HELP! I just got this new mac a week ago.

Garageband > Preferences > Audio/Midi and choose built in mic as input.

  • Mic socket/Audio line in socket?

I have been told that it should be possible with the A60 to get Audio Line In through the Microphone Jack, that it is simply a case of changing the settings in the speech properties in the control panel. The help file said that it should be possible too. I tried several ways of changing the mic jack into the Audio Line In but without success.
Do you know of a way around this problem?
    Many Thanks

I am trying to capture video from my VCR and SKY+ using an external USB capture card. The card has 2 inputs into the notebook, one USB plug; and one Stereo Audio plug.
The USB is fine, and captures the Video alright, but I cannot get any sound when I plug the audio into the mic socket (there is no "line in" on the notebook as there would be on a normal PCI sound card).
I was told that the mic socket doubles as the "line in" and all I have to do is alter the default settings to "line in" instead of "mic". This could be done either by double clicking the speaker icon in the tray and changing the setting there, or by going into "speech" in the control panel and selecting one of the two tabs there. The first method only allows volume adjustment, not setting adjustment. And the second method only has one tab. Not the one I need either.
I would like to know if there is a way of doing this on my notebook as it would be done on a PC.
    Thanks
    Alex

  • After using the internal mic for the first time I am getting a buzzing feedback from my audio output

After using the internal mic for the first time I am getting a buzzing feedback from my audio output

Go to System Preferences Sound Input and adjust the volume level down by dragging the slider to the left. With an audio app like Logic there is an option for input monitoring when recording so there might be a feedback loop if the volume is set too high. Garage Band works in a similar way. Always be careful when using headphones as the noise can be frightful and cause hearing damage.
