Audio line-in problems

I recently updated my OS from 10.3.9 to 10.5.8. However, now in System Preferences (in sound options) I've lost the ability to change my audio input from "Built-in" to "Line in". The old OS had such an option. I've searched the forums, but the closest (and still ineffective) solution was going into Utilities and using the audio MIDI setup. Without this option I can't interface GB, or Cubase with my Keyboard.
Does anyone else have ideas?

If I understand what you are saying, I have the same problem. I am trying to record audiobooks at home and am being frustrated by the computer recognizing but not "admitting" my good mic. It not only defaults ONLY to the internal mic, but when I CAN record with the external mic, I get BOTH and the internal mic volume is loud and the external mic volume is very soft. Can an internal mic be "stubborn"? I've tried other recording software and it's the same effect. When I reset it in System Preferences I still get both mics and eventually the output gets corrupted. I then cannot get sound out of the recording programs at all. However, iTunes will still play. I have to trash the preference for garageband and restart to get the sound output again.
Anyone out there know how to fix this, or what I'm doing wrong? I can't use the internal mic because when the fan comes on I get a terrible roar on the internal mic pick-up.

  • Audio line in problem

After plugging my minidisc output into the mic' socket of my G5 iMac and changing the input setting to 'line in' (on Apple>System Preferences>Sound), I am getting virtually no input signal into GarageBand. I have repeated these very steps on someone elses iMac and it all works fine.
    Can anyone help?
    Many thanks

    hello there,
yes, I have done that. As I said I get a minimal signal even if level is on maximum. I'm thinking it could be a hardware problem, eg a faulty soundcard ?

  • AUDIO Line Out Problem

Something weird happened today. I had the audio from my 2.1 system plugged into an iogear DVI switcher. I no longer need the switch anymore, so I then plugged the audio cable from my 2.1 system directly into the audio in port on the back of my Mac Pro. And I get no sound. I tried everything I can think of. The "line out" option is selected under the "Sound" in preferences. I tried plugging in headphones to the headphone jack and get no sound either. When I change it to "internal speakers", I do hear the sound. Just for the heck of it, I also plugged the 2.1 audio cable to the front headphone jack and still no audio from the speakers.
I am pulling my hair out here...can anyone offer any advice??
    THANKS SO MUCH!

    OMG, I'm so stupid!
I had plugged in my iPhone earlier to the Aux input of the speaker control on the desk and left the plug adapter in it! When it's plugged in, it doesn't allow anything to come through except the Iphone. Unplugged it and all is well again. I can't believe I didn't figure that out on my own earlier!!
Well I hope this helps someone else out in the future who makes this same stupid mistake!

  • Problems with audio line out jack

When I connect the headphones in the audio line out inmediately change to "Digital out" and I don´t listen nothing, but when the headphones is unplugged I hear the music through the internal speakers normally. What can I do about?  Thanks.

I need to change the logic board? or only the audio line out jack can be replace?

  • Can't get sound to play using audio line in

I am trying to play audio from my iPhone by connecting mini plug cable to the headphone jack and the audio line-in mini plug.  The input level indicator in System Preferences > Sound is showing that audio is playing but I don't hear sound.  I do have sound playing through my Mac Pro with iTunes, steaming audio/video, etc., so I know it works.  Any ideas how I can get sound to play audibly using line-in?

Another option not involving any additional software - see:
    http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/87046-play-line-in-through-macbook-pro-in ternal-speakers/
Just came across this problem myself (10.8) and that solution works great - just open Quicktime, there under File: choose a "new audio recording". In the upcoming controller switch up the volume.
Weard that it works this way but nowhere else in the sound System Control panels ...

  • About to purchase a 24" iMac - Any Audio Line In issues?

having read this thread... http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=642356 i'm worried about the new 24" iMac being plagued with Audio Line In crackles and pops when recording audio. eg - GarageBand, etc.
My current Mac, a Power Mac Dual 2ghz G5 (1st gen) had similar issues, why can't Apple get Audio Input right?
I use Logic Express, but I assume if there's a hardware problem it will be present in all apps.
Can anybody confirm if these issues are present before I make my purchase? Thanks.
    Dual 2Ghz G5, 2.5GB RAM, 500GB HD, 250GB HD   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   ATI RADEON 9800 PRO 256MB

Mark, this is a hospital ward. There will always be someone who has some issues. The chances of your getting a specific issue yourself in two separate machines are very slim unless the software itself isn't written right.
Some crackles can be explained by audio file compression. When you compress audio, occasionally data corruption and other issues get caught up in the mix. It is best if you record audio uncompressed if you want the best quality for your audio, or if you use compression, use it at a high enough bit-rate to satisfy your audiophile ears.
Don't worry about getting the issue, and if you do get the issue, that's why you have AppleCare.

  • Audio line-in input won't work

    Hello,
have used Garageband several times in the past, and have had no problems setting the input as audio line-in to record my guitar. However, I tried again for the first time in a couple of years the other day and neither my Powerbook or my iMac would allow me to do it. In System Preferences, the audio line-in input option was not in the drop-down menu. I could only choose iSight or built-in microphone.
I don't think it is the mini-jack adapter that I am using that is the problem. It hasn't been damaged as far as I can see and fits in the socket fine. I tried it in the headphones socket and it clicks in place there and registers in the system preferences. Has there been some kind of bug in a recent(ish) update that has killed audio line-in inputs?
Am running Leopard on PowerPc processors. Realise that the tide has turned against these two computers and that they will need replacing in the next year or two.
    Any help massively appreciated ...

Did you see the fix for this problem and did you try it?  I use to do a lot of direct line in recording with my guitar and now I have the same problem. I won't be able to try to fix till tonight. I am in Oregon.  So I was just curious if you got a solution.
Cause I am kind of ****** about this.
    I would appreciate you feedback!
    Thanks
    Mat

  • Connect iPod to MacBook Pro audio line-in port?

My 1st Gen iPod's Firewire port fried recently; it still delivers a charge to my iPod but won't allow it to mount. I can still listen to music with the headphone jack.
What sort of cable can I use to attach my iPod to the audio line-in on my Macbook Pro?

I also have this problem but with a slightly different twist..
I was using my plantronics (old ms gamevoice headset) with 10.5.2 and it worked, then installed the m-Audio Firewire Audiophile beta drivers and neither the audio-in or the m-audio audiophile line-in cause any VU-meter response (nor input) whereas the standard inbuilt microphone does.
After uninstalling the m-audio drivers the situation is still the same.
Oddly - if I plug in the headphones into the line-in (rather than microphone) then speak into them I actually get input audio (and VU-meter response) through the MBP's audio-in.
So the story about no power is used (hence the headphones create enough to register the sound) sounds about true... very annoying as I thought my old headset had died and went out and bought a new one.. that still doesn't explain the audiophile input issues..
Now I fully expect both companies to point fingers at each other.. I don't care - just get it fixed please.

  • W520 audio line in / line out

Whenever i connect a 3.5mm cable with the line in/out it gets interpreted as a line out (headphone) cable. The line in gets displayed as not connected. Is there any way of switching the interpretation? I don"t need line in + out simultaneously, but i"d really like to use the line in as well

Does any one know how to setup or switch Audio line-in port in "W520 conexant 20672 in Windowns 7 64 bit"?
Does W520 Microphone jack support 3.5 mm audio in from iPod or any other sound device.
I have Mac book pro, they can do switch between Internal Microphone to Audio Line in.
How come this expensive W520 laptop can't do this?
Lenovo service group people doesn't know how to do it. Please help fix this problem that very appreciated.

  • Audio line -in : doesn't seem to be responding

    Hi
My audio line-in port doesnt seem to be working any more.
Does anyone have any advice to help me trouble shoot this issue.
Ive already tried third party recording apps and a new set of mic-headphones but still nothing appears to be coming through.....it worked fine previously and was used often.
It may be an emac hardware issue or a system issue where i updated to Tiger a few months ago.
But perhaps it's something else !?
    thanks for your time.

    1. The type of headset im using is manufactured and ubiquitous for use with any pc or laptop
    see for example :
    http://ooscare.com/products/141_H261N-2%20Binaural%20Headset%20wbpic1.jpg
    or
    http://www.techfresh.net/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/plantronics-mono-headset-for -internet.jpg
    or
    http://thevoipgirl.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/08/headset.jpg
which are close to the ones i use. I know they're the cheap end but they are very common - Don't they just get their voltage from the mac itself ??
    Also
    2. Mine worked fine until recently - which means i was able to speak into the mic and hear it in software and adjust the audio input level in the O.S. sound prefs and now can no longer do this because when i have line-in selected as my source it's not showing any reciept signal in the display level indicator.
The simple fact that i was previously for several years able to operate one of these mic head-sets suggests that the issue must lie elsewhere and is has not been about the headset amp level as you suggested- My concern is that it is something to do with the OS Tiger which i recently updated to .....simply because it's the only major change i have in the recent past - i can't think what else it could be or what trouble shooting procedures to follow on this type of problem....

Yeah, it does make me appreciate Wordpress. I would have
    stuck with it, but
when I found out that you have to pay to edit your CSS (on
    their hosted
plan), I switched back to Blogger!
I'll keep my eye on that beta ("draft") version of Blogger. I
    have to be
cautious with my client's account, but maybe I'll try it for
    my own blogs.
    Thanks again...!

I am recording some keyboard music from a digital keyboard (Yamaha pf85) into iMovie HD 6 on my laptop through the audio line in. I have connected Output I from the keyboard to the audio line in using a mini jack adapter. This is supposed to record the music in Mono, but it will only play back on the left side of the spectrum. There is no right side sound at all. The keyboard has twin outputs, so I have also tried connecting Outputs I and II to the laptop's line in, using a twin mini jack adapter, but the music still only plays back on the left side. What's happened to the right side?
I have transferred the movie to my desktop Mac (PowerPC G4 with OS 10.4.11) but I get the same problem.
I've tried exporting the movie to QuickTime, but still the same problem.
What am I doing wrong? How can I record/playback the sound on both sides of the spectrum?

Thanks for these suggestions, which are blinding but have not solved it.
    1) All cables OK and fully inserted.
    2) I tried recording a voice over into iMovie using a USB mic/headset and that was in mono but played back through both channels, so laptop and iMovie are OK recording with USB.
    3) I tried recording from the keyboard into iMovie and QuickTime on the laptop in three different ways through line in: first using both Outputs, then using Output I only and finally using Output II only. On all three occasions, the sound played back on the laptop through the left channel only. The keyboard itself has two inbuilt speakers and a headphone socket and both are providing mono sound through left and right channels, which suggests it's not faulty.
I then tried recording sound only from the keyboard into Quicktime on my desktop Mac, using the same cables and adapter. Left channel only.
I guess this means either the adapter is faulty or it's something to do with the way my keyboard outputs sound. I'll try your other suggestion. Or maybe I just need a hardware interface to route the separate channels. That seems excessive for what I want to achieve.

I am trying to record a basic guitar track while I sing along.  I don't want my vocals to be recorded at the same time but the internal mic seems to be picking up the vocal and guitar sounds.  I tried System Preferences, Sound, Line In - Audio Line Input.  It seems to be a common problem in Garageband for the Mac, ipad and iphone.

for me it turned out that the jack into the iMac was loose.  Once I fiddled with it everything worked okay

  • Audio line-in not working on MacBook late 2008

The audio line-in on my aluminium MacBook late 2008 has stopped working.
The built-in microphone works like a charm, but when I connect an external microphone the computer does not register sound any more. I have tried with several microphones, and I have verified in the settings that the sound input is set to line-in (I don't know exactly what the setting is called in English, in French it's "Entrée ligne". Anyway, it must be the right one).
One last piece of important information might be that I hear a scraping sound in the speakers when I connect the microphone. After that, nothing.
Is this a hardware problem or is there anything I can do on my own to fix it?
    Thank you!

    The built in iMic works
I assume that's a typo and you just meant the "Built-in Mic"
when I turned it on a screen came down that said I needed to restart my
computer. So I assume that means some sort of signal is being recieved by
    the line in....
I wouldn't call that a safe assumption, it jsut means your computer crashed. Pretty rare for Mac OS X, but it does happen.
Are you using a PPC or Intel based Mac? I'm guessing intel since you implied that you set GB's prefs to Line-In (this can't be done on a PPC Mac). Make sure GB's Input PopUp menu is set to line in and try creating a New Basic Track.

  • Audio Line-In Input: Not Reading Sound

    So here's my problem:
I tried recording some stuff I was doing in my DAW using Quicktime's Audio Recording option. My understanding is that I simply start a new recording, choose my input device, and start recording (by which I chose "Built-In Input: Line In").  I chose that option thinking, "Oh hey, I obviously want the highest quality sound for a recording so my friends can hear what I'm doing...why not have them hear what I'm hearing in my headphones?" Turns out, after I listened back to the recording....NO SOUND. I triple checked but the audio clip had no sound...just silence. Then, I went to system preferences, checked to make sure the correct Audio Input was selected...yes: "Line In: Audio Line-in port,"     NOT "internal microphone." Ok...so what now?
Then I went into the AUDIO MIDI SETUP in Utilities to make sure everything was okay there. Everything's fine...except the master volume on my Built-in Input is set to "0." The left and right faders are at a moderate level but the master is simply 0 (and it won't let me adjust it...it's just grayed out). The weird thing is, when I go back to system preferences, I have the Built-In Input level turned up. Why are these two levels different if they're the same input? Is this why I'm getting no sound when trying to record things like: music coming from my DAW, or simple audio tracks on my mac, or other recordings? I should emphasize: I AM hearing sound through my output, BUT I am NOT able to record that sound with a recording device. I've tried multiple things: Line In application, Audacity, restarting comp, changing to audo interface, checking DAW settings, etc. Why is my Line-In Input getting no signal? Thanks guys!
    My specs:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/sp644

Couple of things to check, you say you have selected line in ok, are you sending an analog signal to the line in port?(It needs to be analog to be seen) If you are, when you open  QT, under file click new audio recording, then also click the little white triangle on the upper right and make sure that it is set to line is a well. You need to click the red square to begin recording. Also check the Audio MIDI Set Up is configured as in the 2nd  screen shot
