Audio Line-In question

If i have a source connected to the line-in jack on the rear of my imac... will i hear the source sound as well as my normal imac sounds? or will the line-in source override any normal operating sounds my mac would normally make?

hmmm, so... what i have set up now is a tv next to my imac 27 and alot of times ill play games late into the night at which time i will through on my headphones... before i had the tv it was easy.. all the sound came from the computer and using the headphones was fine... now i have the computer and the TV to quiet... is there any software that you can think of that would allow me to mix the two sources on the computer?

13.3" MBP Audio line in Question

I have a 13.3 md-2009 MBP and want to do some recording on the laptop. I want to transfer some music from LPs to the laptop but do not know whether the headphone/audio line in accepts stereo?
I thought I read that it only will record in mono, but the separate audio in line on the 15" MBP will record stereo. Is this true? If so, how else can I record stereo into my laptop? Should I use something from M-Audio?

Question about Audio line-in/optical in/Audio out/optical out

I have a late 2009 27" iMac (v3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo). I note that on Apple's description of the rear ports, what I thought were simply headphone (Audio Out) and microphone (Audio In) jacks are described as:
1. Headphone/optical digital [S/PDIF] audio out:
"Line/Headphone output

While, as an Olde School audiophile guy (62, and I still have vinyl!), I generally understand the gist of all this, I'm not at all hip to what S/PDIF optical digital output and/or digital audio input can do for me. So my questions are:
1. Can somebody please wise me up to the usage(s) of these optical inputs and outputs on the iMac?
2. The Apple description says,under "Line/Headphone output":
"PCM: 16, 20, or 24 bits per sample at sample rates of 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, or 96 kHz
AC-3: 16 bits per sample at sample rates of 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, 88.2 kHz, 96 kHz, 176.4 kHz, or 192 kHz"
and under "Line input

How -- where -- do I adjust these bit depth and sample rates?

Thanks for the info. Turns out there's an even easier way to do it than using the "Audio Midi Setup": through the prefs in the latest (and probably some previous) version of VLC, which is currently Version 1.0.2 Goldeneye (Intel 64bit).
Now if we could only get full native resolution (or at least 1080p) HDMI input into the Mini-DPs of our 2560 x 1440-capable 27" iMacs and actually have it display something WAY better than 720p (half the resolution of which the 27" iMac is capable) to which Apple limited it, without having to buy a third-party $270.00 HDMI-to Mini-DPP converter and scaler. Call me crazy, but it seems kinda silly to have to pay another $300 to buy a device that will scale the 27" iMac's resolution back up to a measly 1080p, let alone its native 2560 x 1440. But, as the

HT1596 macbook Pro 15" mountain lion does't have any Audio Line In/Out.

i'm macbook Pro Retina display 15" user. i realised that this macbook does't have any Audio Line In/Out. I really need this to record audio direct from instrument to GarageBand. Any other way to do this?

Maybe the music pros will pop in soon (late night GarageBand sessions and all). From what I've read, most of the musical types around here use some sort of Firewire devices for audio in/out so you'd at the least need a Thunderbolt>Firewire adapter.
You might want to take your question to the GarageBand forum - https://discussions.apple.com/community/ilife/garageband - while a number of you musical types use MBPs, I would bet that you'd get more answers to your query in that forum.

Audio line-in shows input, but no audio?

I got a MyFi xm2Go player that I plugged in to my MDD's audio line-in jack with a patch cable (3.5mm to 3.5mm). I can't seem to get it to play through my MDD.
Checked under the Sound preferences. Line In selected for input, and the levels fluctuate like its got the signal. Verified Line Out was still my one option. Played with all the volume sliders. Even plugged headphones into the jack on the base just to make sure it worked, and it does.
I can't get the audio to play through.
What am I missing?

I'm going to change this to "answered" because thanks to this conversation I have found a solution.
Versiontracker has a freeware program called LineIn that bridges this gap. It will let you select your audio in and out and with a click of a button labeled "Pass Thru" it plays any audio input through your audio output.

This might be beating a dead horse, but one of the most disappointing things about the migration to OS X was these missing bits of functionality that somehow got lost in translation. I have heard the defense that since OS X is a brand new operating system from the kernel on up it's not a question of having taken something away.

At the risk of sounding obnoxious, from the end user's standpoint if I go from 9 to 10 I shouldn't be losing any functionality of 9 by going to 10. If 9 had pass through, it's Apple's obligation to build that functionality into 10. If 10 is brand new from the ground up, find a way to recreate that new functionality.
It's clearly possible. I found a third-party non-Apple developer that did it.
The reason I'm ranting is that I shouldn't have had to hunt for this answer or a third-party solution in the first place. This is an obvious need that Apple really should have handled for me. The "pass-through" button should have either been there, or not been necessary because line-in audio would automatically be passed through to the line-out selected.

How to get an only audio line in working for HP ENVY 15?

So, I have have an HP ENVY 15 (product number E1P05AV), and am trying to record audio (from a synthesizer, mono audio out) into a third-party program (REAPER, though Audacity would work too). I am trying to accomplish this through an audio line in through the combined headphone/mic port on the right side of the computer. However, all attempts/experiments so far have resulted in the computer recording from the internal microphone- not desired. I've browsed the web a bit, but have found nothing really of help.
So, the question: how can I get the combined audio jack to work such that I can record audio from it, and not the internal microphone?

I had the same problem with the HP "x2-k010nr". Bought the pc at OfficeMax/OfficeDepot and went to Radio Shack and bought the "adapter" since OfficeMax/OfficeDepot did not carry one. Spent days trying to figure out the same problem you are having. Sent to pc to HP and they returned it and indicated that they could not find any problem. Went back to OfficeMax/OfficeDepot and bought an Asus Transformer and it worked properly for two days and the same problem happened and had to return it. There appears to be a very serious problem with external audio-in on any Microsoft 8.1 os system and external audio . I have given up on Microsoft os products until this problem is solved. I have been using my Gateway netbook with XP os for 4 years with zero problems with external audio-in or out.

Damaged Audio line out jack

Hope to get some advice here - after messing with my MDD to get a Time Capsule up and running (while changing the ethernet connections a couple of times), I managed to thwack the audio line out cord from the box enough to damage it - I noticed one channel of the audio was gone, then after finding the jack is loose, wiggled it just enough to make it worse or better depending where the cord sits... I am using powered speakers so the apple speaker mini-jack doesn't seem to be a good option instead of the line out...
The question is, can this be repaired without replacing the logic board?

Repairing that component could be not inexpensive (if done by a tech shop) or risky (if done by someone else).
As an alternative, you could consider using the Griffin iMic Adapter.

How do I use the MacBook Pro's audio line in?

I've been trying to connect my Playstation 3's analog audio output to my MacBook Pro but it doesn't seem to work. Everytime after I connect it, there still won't be any sound coming out of the speakers.

Have you selected "audio line in" as your sound source in System preferences / Sound?
The other thing you will need to do is get hold of a copy of an excellent little utility produced by the people who make "Audio Hijack", called "Line-In" - available from http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Audio/LineIn.shtml or direct from the maker at http://www.rogueamoeba.com/freebies/
There is no need to use a sound recording app, if you use "Line In", though that is another option.

Can't get sound to play using audio line in

I am trying to play audio from my iPhone by connecting mini plug cable to the headphone jack and the audio line-in mini plug. The input level indicator in System Preferences > Sound is showing that audio is playing but I don't hear sound. I do have sound playing through my Mac Pro with iTunes, steaming audio/video, etc., so I know it works. Any ideas how I can get sound to play audibly using line-in?

Just came across this problem myself (10.8) and that solution works great - just open Quicktime, there under File: choose a "new audio recording". In the upcoming controller switch up the volume.
Weard that it works this way but nowhere else in the sound System Control panels ...

About to purchase a 24" iMac - Any Audio Line In issues?

having read this thread... http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=642356 i'm worried about the new 24" iMac being plagued with Audio Line In crackles and pops when recording audio. eg - GarageBand, etc.
My current Mac, a Power Mac Dual 2ghz G5 (1st gen) had similar issues, why can't Apple get Audio Input right?
I use Logic Express, but I assume if there's a hardware problem it will be present in all apps.
Can anybody confirm if these issues are present before I make my purchase? Thanks.

Mark, this is a hospital ward. There will always be someone who has some issues. The chances of your getting a specific issue yourself in two separate machines are very slim unless the software itself isn't written right.
Some crackles can be explained by audio file compression. When you compress audio, occasionally data corruption and other issues get caught up in the mix. It is best if you record audio uncompressed if you want the best quality for your audio, or if you use compression, use it at a high enough bit-rate to satisfy your audiophile ears.
Don't worry about getting the issue, and if you do get the issue, that's why you have AppleCare.

Audio line-in input won't work

Hello,
have used Garageband several times in the past, and have had no problems setting the input as audio line-in to record my guitar. However, I tried again for the first time in a couple of years the other day and neither my Powerbook or my iMac would allow me to do it. In System Preferences, the audio line-in input option was not in the drop-down menu. I could only choose iSight or built-in microphone.
I don't think it is the mini-jack adapter that I am using that is the problem. It hasn't been damaged as far as I can see and fits in the socket fine. I tried it in the headphones socket and it clicks in place there and registers in the system preferences. Has there been some kind of bug in a recent(ish) update that has killed audio line-in inputs?
Am running Leopard on PowerPc processors. Realise that the tide has turned against these two computers and that they will need replacing in the next year or two.
Any help massively appreciated ...

Did you see the fix for this problem and did you try it? I use to do a lot of direct line in recording with my guitar and now I have the same problem. I won't be able to try to fix till tonight. I am in Oregon. So I was just curious if you got a solution.

Connect iPod to MacBook Pro audio line-in port?

My 1st Gen iPod's Firewire port fried recently; it still delivers a charge to my iPod but won't allow it to mount. I can still listen to music with the headphone jack.
What sort of cable can I use to attach my iPod to the audio line-in on my Macbook Pro?

I also have this problem but with a slightly different twist..
I was using my plantronics (old ms gamevoice headset) with 10.5.2 and it worked, then installed the m-Audio Firewire Audiophile beta drivers and neither the audio-in or the m-audio audiophile line-in cause any VU-meter response (nor input) whereas the standard inbuilt microphone does.
After uninstalling the m-audio drivers the situation is still the same.
Oddly - if I plug in the headphones into the line-in (rather than microphone) then speak into them I actually get input audio (and VU-meter response) through the MBP's audio-in.
So the story about no power is used (hence the headphones create enough to register the sound) sounds about true... very annoying as I thought my old headset had died and went out and bought a new one.. that still doesn't explain the audiophile input issues..
Now I fully expect both companies to point fingers at each other.. I don't care - just get it fixed please.

What is the "Audio line in" port for?

I have a microphone headset but plugging the mic cord into the audio line in port does nothing. Similarly, when I tried plugging a cable from the "tape out" of my audio amplifier into that port for dubbing purposes, nothing happened. In both cases I can achieve what I want using an iMic and a USB port. So what's the audio line line port for? How can I use it?

Check your Sound settings in system preferences and audio midi set-up, Brian. It may be that you have it set to accept sound in through USB at present. Another possibility is that the port has "stuck" on "optical input".

Faulty audio line-in port?

Hi, I've just bought a 'Monster iStudioLink' lead to record a guitar onto my Mac using Garageband, but something isn't working!
I've gone into System Preferences to check if there is a sound input and the iMacs internal mic is working fine but theres no audio line-in signal.
Does anybody know if there is a way that I could check if the line-in is faulty or am I doing something wrong?

First make sure you are plugged into the
imput jack not the headphone jack
(Ive done that many times)
If you are going direct from your guitar
you may need to go through a pre amp first.

W520 audio line in / line out

Whenever i connect a 3.5mm cable with the line in/out it gets interpreted as a line out (headphone) cable. The line in gets displayed as not connected. Is there any way of switching the interpretation? I don"t need line in + out simultaneously, but i"d really like to use the line in as well
