AUDIO Line Out Problem

Something weird happened today. I had the audio from my 2.1 system plugged into an iogear DVI switcher. I no longer need the switch anymore, so I then plugged the audio cable from my 2.1 system directly into the audio in port on the back of my Mac Pro. And I get no sound. I tried everything I can think of. The "line out" option is selected under the "Sound" in preferences. I tried plugging in headphones to the headphone jack and get no sound either. When I change it to "internal speakers", I do hear the sound. Just for the heck of it, I also plugged the 2.1 audio cable to the front headphone jack and still no audio from the speakers.
I am pulling my hair out here...can anyone offer any advice??
THANKS SO MUCH!

OMG, I'm so stupid!
I had plugged in my iPhone earlier to the Aux input of the speaker control on the desk and left the plug adapter in it! When it's plugged in, it doesn't allow anything to come through except the Iphone. Unplugged it and all is well again. I can't believe I didn't figure that out on my own earlier!!
Well I hope this helps someone else out in the future who makes this same stupid mistake!

  • Audio line out buzz, clicks and ground hum all of the sudden?

I've developed a nasty, sharp, buzzing from my audio line-out on my iMac G5, and it's gets twice as loud and unbearable when I put the computer to sleep. When I plug in a pair of iPod headphones and play a song, NO AUDIO WHATSOEVER appears in the phones, just a steady endless series of audible clicks. All connections were tested with new cables, etc., and it didn't make a lick of difference. My guess is that this issue has something ot do with the "optical out" dual-purpose jack 3.5mm jack, like it's internal switch is stuck half-on or something-- I saw a red light when plugging in the audio cable. Has anyone experienced a problem like this on their machine?

I've read about the red light here before. The jack does indeed read the impedence and then ping software to let it know something's attached. Perhaps try several different plugs in addition to the cables you've already tried. I know some speakers and headphones here at my place have WAY different impedence values.
Some people have been able to trouble shoot by creating a dummy user account to verify it's a software problem (the problem is gone in the new account). Other people have been successful resetting the core audio by running the GarageBand program. Not sure these tricks will help you, as 60 cycle hum leads me to think there's a hardware problem.
Let us know if this is helpful (as I only need 5 more points to hit 1000!)

  • Audio Line Out Stuck in Optical Mode Toothpick Technique

My macbook's audio line out is stuck in optical out mode. (red light and everything)  Many have had this problem and many have fixed it with a toothpick.  I want to know how this is done.  People just keep saying that they fixed it without explaining what exactly they do with the toothpick. (I'm looking for incredibly specific instructions) Any help would be great!

Not much to say, fixing problems while the warranty is still good seems like common sense ...

  • Audio line-out issues

Audio line out not working. Had done up till updated Snow Leopard recently. Anybody had same problem? Any fixes?!

Problem "solved". Uncertain about why though.
Disc Repair? The verify disc did show up that it needed repairing.
    Resetting PRAM?
Or the speaker cables ? I put in another cable of the same type but both cables now working fine. So...?
It may be simply how the steps are sequenced.
But a nuisance when it happens.

  • Connecting to audio line out freezes QuickTime!

Today for the first time I tried plugging my Apple speakers into the line out socket of my new Mac Pro instead of the headphone socket, only to discover that this prevented any QuickTime files from playing. It also caused FCPX to freeze up. Has anyone else experienced this strange phenomenon?
This was after installing the latest Yosemite update, but I cannot say whether this made any difference as I did not try this socket previously.

The Mac Pro (Late 2013) has two distinct audio ports. Audio devices you connect to the port will appear in System Preferences > Sound > Output.
Audio out: The left audio port with a speaker icon is a 1/8" stereo minijack for audio line out. It can use analog audio and digital S/PDIF fibre optic cables.  Note that this port does not support headsets or microphones.
Headphone port: The right audio port with a headset icon is a 1/8" stereo minijack for headphones. When you plug in headphones to this port, sound is redirected from the internal speakers to the headphones.  If the headset contains a microphone, it will appear in System Preferences > Sound > Input.
As with handling audio processing errors on a per-application basis, you can try toggling some audio format and input/output device settings in the Sound panel of System Preferences, or using the Audio MIDI Setup utility that is in your Applications > Utilities folder.
If this does not work, then you may need to reset the audio daemon, which can be done by rebooting your system; however, this may not be desired if you are in the middle of a workflow and would prefer to keep your system operating. In these cases, you can manually reset the audio daemon, by simply forcing it to quit. This can be done by opening the Terminal utility and running the following command: sudo killall coreaudiod

  • Faulty audio line out

The audio line out on my G5 dual-core has stopped working. There is a tiny amount of output, but not enough to drive the speakers. The headphone jack in front works. Does this mean the sound card is bad? The machine is less than one year old - should I take it somewhere to be repaired? Does the sound from the headphone jack come from the same sound card?

Yes, I am using powered speakers.

  • Premiere Pro CC & New Mac Pro - Audio Line Out Issue

I'm having a few issues with the audio line out on the new Mac Pro. For some reason, Line Out locks into Premiere Pro. When I switch programs, the audio line out device stays locked to Premiere Pro and the only way to get other programs to be able to output audio when Premiere Pro is not current application, is to go into System Preferences > Sound and click onto an alternative output and then click back onto Line Out.
    Thanks,
    Jon

    Thanks.

  • Possible to use audio line out and in simultaneously ?

In the current version of MacBook Pro Retina is it possible to use the analog audio line out and line in both simultaneously ? That is playback as well as record analog audio at the same time.
Does anyone know what is the audio hardward platform (Codec, DAC, ADC, etc..) in this machine ?
    Thanks!

    Air has a headset jack.
    You can use a splitter
Mics should be USB capable for best results, almost all headset mics are junk quality.
then monitoring or listening thru the headphones
consider using a PRO MIC , such as an Audio Technica AT2020 USB

or better still use one of these with pro XLR mics:

Are you sure you have everything connected properly?  Are you sure that your audio designation in System Preferences is set correctly?
Describe in detail how you connect your speaker system to your iMac.

  • Audio line out port (Apple iPad Dock Connector) not working Iphone 4 os 4.2

For my new iphone4, the audio line out port (Apple iPad Dock Connector)is not working. Both using a cable to mini jack (3,5 mm) or in dockingstation.
    I'm using OS 4.2.
    IS this a bug?
    Thanks
    Hans

I just came back from the Apple store.  My iPhone4 DOES have a working line out when plugged into a Apple name brand dock connector.   I don't know why my SendStation refuses to work only with the iPhone4 yet works with iPods, etc..
Solution? I'm buying an Apple iPod dock connector for home and will try to find something with line out for the car - Apple says they do not make one.

  • Damaged Audio line out jack

Hope to get some advice here - after messing with my MDD to get a Time Capsule up and running (while changing the ethernet connections a couple of times), I managed to thwack the audio line out cord from the box enough to damage it - I noticed one channel of the audio was gone, then after finding the jack is loose, wiggled it just enough to make it worse or better depending where the cord sits... I am using powered speakers so the apple speaker mini-jack doesn't seem to be a good option instead of the line out...
The question is, can this be repaired without replacing the logic board?
    Many thanks in advance!
    David

    Hi, David -
Repairing that component could be not inexpensive (if done by a tech shop) or risky (if done by someone else).
As an alternative, you could consider using the Griffin iMic Adapter.

  • Using Audio-line out in MacPro

    Hi,
I have recently switched to Mac from Windows. I have a good Altec Lansing speakers which I would like to continue using for sometime.
Normally the speakers contains black and green connectors and you connect the green to the audio out.
But connecting the green connector to the audio out in MacPro doesn't bring any sound.
What is this audio out? Can I use my Windows speakers with it?
The speakers works fine when I connect to the Headphone Jack in the front.
    Any info is useful.
    Cheers.
    MacPro Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Getting the audio out to work the first time can at times be a little fiddly although once you have it working it's no problem after that. What I needed to do is, in the Sound System Preference, is to change the Output between the built-in speakers and the line out a few time while changing the system volume (via the keyboard) up and down inbetween.
I've never figured out why it's sometime like this but once you've fixed it its not a problem afterwards.

  • IPod Line Out Problem

I have my iPod connected to my car stereo to play music via the line out signals. It is powered / charged via USB connections on pins 23 (USB power), 16 (USB Ground), 25 (USB Data -) and 27 (USB Data +). It sends line out audio to my stereo via pins 2 (Common), 3 (Line Out Audio Right), 4 (Line Out Audio Left). Pin 11 is connected to Pins 15 and 16 to send the audio to Line Out rather than the onboard speakers. Pin 21 is connected to Pin 15 and 16 via a 68K ohm resistor to avoid error messages. When docked the charging works correctly but the audio signal will switch between Line Out and the onboard speakers. It will start by sending music via Line Out but after 20 seconds it may switch to the onboard speakers. After another 20 seconds it may switch back to Line Out or it may continue to play via the onboard speakers. Eventually it will usually switch back to Line Out but it may take a long time. The fact that it repeatably switches back and forth after 20 seconds is interesting. It's like it is checking to see what mode it is in and it's not seeing what it should see. I've checked and reworked all of my connections several times. I still can't eliminate this problem. Any idea how to correct this? I would really appreciate some help!

EDIT: I just tried headphones instead of my home dock and had the same problem...is my headphone jack bad?
