Audio Monitor Recommendations

Hey all --
I just upgraded to FCS 2, and as my projects get more complicated and involved, I am wanting to invest in a pair of decent audio monitors. Any recommendations? What do you use to send audio from your Mac to the monitors?
Also -- has anyone had any experience with Sony's flat panel video monitors. I've been eying the 17" LMD-172WS and was wondering how it compared to sony's classic CRTs. I am in need of a pro video monitor as well and would love the space-saving design of the LCD.
Thanks,
Bret

I've got some Genelec 8030A for 5.1 setup. They work pretty good and fit my confined space.
Apogee or Motu for AD/DA audio hardware -- these are companies that have stay with the Mac for a long time with good updates and driver support.

  • Monitor Recommendations for Use with Captivate

Anyone have any monitor recommendations for use with Captivate? Size and resolution?

The formal adobe  recommendation is as posted 1024x768 is fine.
But, monitors are not that expensive, so for productivity and better work environment I recommend at least one wide screen 22" with resolution  1600X1200 or more  and that supports 1080 for video.
You need the  wide screen ( or  two monitors) so you can work with all the tools in one view.

  • Monitor recommendations for PS/CS5.5 print work

Hopefully this won't be retreading old ground too much, but I'm looking for monitor recommendations for using with CS5.5 for print work in Photoshop and InDesign mainly on a new Mac Mini. I've got a Spyder 3 for calibration already so that side of things is covered - the Apple Thunderbolt display is a bit of range financially, plus I'm not sure about the glossy screen myself, ideally I'd be looking to spend no more than £500 and size wise about 24" would be the ideal size due to the amount of deskspace available to me. TIA for any/all help/recommendations!

    For starters look heere:

The degree of perfection is dependent on your final needs. A studio doing catalog work is going to need a monitor all the way up to top providers like Eizo. for my needs where I output to an Epson 3800 and bigger, I find the dell u2412 to be ideal, and at your price category, maybe 2 will fit the budget.
The 2412 does not cover the full Adobe RGB gamut, but it does cover sRGB IEC 61966-2-1:1999, the current preference for  online color. I use it because correcting the monitor to match the print for b&w is paramount, and the best monitors for this use LED backlight. The u2412 is admirable for this especially at it's price point.
I also use a 2nd monitor but it is a smaller 4:3 aspect ratio. It's use is strictly for tools and such.
The 2412 is a 16:10 aspect ratio and is far better, imo, for graphics work. Also (and maybe especially!) it is very close to the golden mean ratio giving it a wonderful presentation format. Check it out where you see 16:9 and 16:10 side by side.
When I am working closely with adjustment layers I have enough room on my screen to pull over the specific palette next to the image while tweaking, a big help without losing the ability to fill the screen later if you wish. Simply move the palette back to it's home on the other screen.
    Good Luck!

  • Audio monitoring follows video to Firewire Output

I'm a new FCS/Soundtrack Pro user but have been using ProTools LE and HD for some time.
When I select Video Out Firewire to view my video on an external monitor my audio monitoring follows and feeds the firewire device instead of my internal Mac outputs or my DIGI-002R.
I only want to view the vision on the monitor and keep my audio outputs playing through the DIGI002R. Is there any way of achieving this or am I missing something in the setup?

  • Proper Audio Monitoring

I'm looking at taking the next step with my setup, so that means proper audio monitoring. Can I get that just by taking the 1/8" audio out from my MacBook Pro, or do I need to go through an external box like a MXO 2 or AJA Express to get proper audio like I need to get proper video monitoring? I'm just doing simple stereo audio, no surround sound.
    Thanks,
    -Brian

Well, mainly as volume control. But I also have it connected to a deck, so I have TWO sources that I can then control the volume for. Well, three. I have Avid and hardware for that too. But mainly it is a volume knob. Thus it is a small mixer.

  • How can I turn OFF audio monitoring during capture from tape?

FCP has a very useful check box that allows you to turn off audio monitoring during capture, so you can listen to other things whilst the batch captures.  Is there any way to do this in PP?  If not, how can I make a feature request?
    I'm using PP CS6.
    Thanks for any help.

The only other solution I can offer is to go to "edit" "preferences" then select "playback". Under playback set the default audio device to your capturing device instead of the adobe desktop audio. This will allow you capture but not have to listen to whats being captured. However once it's done capturing you'll have to set it back to adobe desktop audio otherwise you can't hear what you're editing in your timeline.
Other than that I'm out of ideas sorry.

  • Monitoring HDV through Decklink with Firewire Audio Monitoring - Latency

A question for all you pro's out there...
I am currently using Final Cut Studio on a Mac Pro with a Decklink HD Extreme card for monitoring video and a M-Audio Firewire 410 for audio monitoring. My output settings in FCP are having the Decklink for video viewing on a HD Monitor, and Using the firewire 410 for a multichannel audio output. I seem to be having a sync issue with the video and audio not in sync. Does anyone know how I might can correct this sync issue?
What is everyone doing for Multichannel sound?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks for any help!
    Bob

Did you capture threw the BM Decklink? You might have an issue with sync if you did. If you used firewire then its an adjustment I sure. I'm sure there must be a control panel for the BM Decklink. If you can't find it take two asprins call Black Magic in the morning.
    Good Luck

  • Multibridge Pro no audio monitoring during capture

I cannot get audio monitoring during capture, from betacam (component) or dv, I tried everything I can think of, does anybody else is running to the same problem?
(running mac pro, plenty of ram, Os version 10.5.2, decklink software 6.6.2, FCP 6.0.2)
    Thanks for any suggestions.

I tried to reboot the multibridge many but to no avail. Regarding the monitoring, I do not really care about monitoring the upload, but I want to be able to log the clip via final cut, and it should work, however it does not.
Also I wanted to know if users of the multibridge have issues with the video levels? I just switch from a HD Decklink card and the difference in level is not right, the multibridge is much to bright. Any suggestions?

  • How do I turn audio monitoring ON so I can hear while I record?

I'm a musician trying to record live video of a song in imovie '09.
How do I turn the audio monitoring ON so that I can hear what I'm playing while I play it?
In other words: I can only hear what I recorded on the mic when I play the video back. *I want to know how to hear (through the speakers) what I am recording while I am recording it.
    I sincerely appreciate any help

  • Audio Monitoring

    Greetings,
I am curious as i set up my new editing studio. I currently have two creative desktop surround sound speakers connected to my mac pro - the sound is pretty good. however as I grow with editing I'm curious about another audio monitoring option.
I have a sound mixer (ssm-1850) that I picked up from radio shack some time ago - i also have two large speakers that i purchased with the mixer - could i use this setup for audio monitoring? if so what is the best way to set this up?
    Also i have a MATROX MX02 with MAX -
If the 2nd setup is not a good idea - is it best to monitor through headphones? I have a pair of Sony MDR-V150
Any feedback is appreciated - thank you

    A best practice setup is:
    Mac->MX02->Mixer->Monitors
Set your audio monitors where the tweeters are at ear-level (you may have to buy monitor stands), and that they are the same distance from each other as they are from you forming a triangle, with them rotated toward you (not pointed straight out).
Monitoring for surround sound follows the same basic setup, but is more complicated.

Monitor primarily through at least project studio-quality monitors (i.e. M-Audio BX-5a's, Mackie HR-824's). Headphones are okay for comparing, as well as lesser speakers such as TV speakers or the internal speaker on your Mac Pro. That will give you a better idea of how your mix will translate.

  • Audition headphone / audio monitoring?

    Hey folks,
I'm curious if Adobe Audition has any easy way to set up headphone audio monitoring? A basic audio passthrough? Basically, so i can hear the levels at the same time i am recording or speaking through the microphone in a pair of headphones. I have a feeling this might be a more complicated question than it seems, because I'm using a USB microphone (Blue Microphones' Spark XLR), so i'm imagining maybe there is hardware latency issues with using USB?
Thanks a lot for your time!
    -Quin

Audition doesn't do any monitoring setup at all - that's down to the software controller for your audio device, although it's possible to send a channel output from Audition's mixer in multitrack mode directly to an output. That will give you a round trip through Audition, and include any effects you've put in the channel -  but it will only be the dry signal that gets recorded.
To do this, you need to find out in Audition's hardware preferences whether there's an output available, and then you have to select to use it in the channel preferences. Yes it will increase latency - probably enough to put you off doing it if you don't have a seriously fast machine. There's no particular latency issue with USB connections - by and large this is all down to the processing in the machine, which has to take your signal, pass it through Audition, and then send it back to the audio driver. That's what takes the time. The really bad news is that this is really only going to work properly with ASIO drivers (minimum latency), and I'm assuming that this is a USB mic. If so, Blue don't appear to have produced any ASIO drivers at all for it. But it's not clear from your original post because you refer to an XLR mic. How is it connected to the PC?

  • Audio Monitoring of System Sound

    Hi,
I am an editor and I'd like to control my edit suites seamlessly, everything looks great so far except for the lack of audio monitoring.
Is there a technical reason why it's not possible to monitor audio?
    Thanks

As Templeton said, no one here would know why Apple did not elect to include such a feature. I could guess, but it would only be a guess.
You can indicate to Apple your interest in such a feature via their feedback page:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/remotedesktop.html
I think it unlikely that such a feature will be included, but one can hope.

  • What Is Audio Monitori

Hey everyone, so I finally found out that you cannot use Audio Monitoring with 5. enabled ( up untill this point I thought I had a pc fault where I could not use both ).
    But what Audio Monitoring?
( in other words, what am I missing out on by having it disabled? )
( sub-question: Am trying to get my head around sample rates and bit depth, would I be right in saying there is no difference wether my settings are 6bit/44.khz when I'm playing an mp3 or audio cd? )

Simple question, anyone able to answer?
    Thanks

  • Final Cut Express...Audio monitoring while capturing video.

Does anyone know how to monitor audio while capturing?

You might try posting in the FCE forum, very few Express users here in the Final Cut Pro forum.
In FCP, the function—and limitations—is clearly explained in the manual. I hope Apple's FCE manual and online help system are as thorough.
