Audio Monitoring of System Sound

Hi,
I am an editor and I'd like to control my edit suites seamlessly, everything looks great so far except for the lack of audio monitoring.
Is there a technical reason why it's not possible to monitor audio?
Thanks

As Templeton said, no one here would know why Apple did not elect to include such a feature. I could guess, but it would only be a guess.
You can indicate to Apple your interest in such a feature via their feedback page:

I think it unlikely that such a feature will be included, but one can hope.

Hi i upgraded from lion to mountain lion to day on my mini mac,Since the upgrade i am no longer getting sound through my HDMI cable which was working fine on lion Checked the midi audio settings and system preferences to out on HDMi nothing no sound whats so ever.Any one any ideas?
I use a samsung TV for my monitor via HDMI.Tried all the system Audi setting nothing .Head phone and internal speakers are fine.

Similar issue; Audio was working fine on Lion, now not on Mountain Lion. Have a Macbook Pro early 2011 with AMD Radeon HD 6750M, connected by thunderbolt through a Lacie LBD to a mini-displayport to HDMI adapter (n.b. same problem when not going through the LBD) to a Pioneer VSX 521 AV receiver. For me when I go into audio Midi settings all the volume sliders for the displayport device are greyed out and at zero. But when I click 'configure speakers', it's able to send out the test signals to each speaker. Part of the problem could be that I'm not getting the option to put out 6channel sound, only 2 or 8 channel. Since my system is Dolby 5.1, and I only have 6 speakers, I would have expected the 6ch option to be available. But I imagine there's more to it than that. Elsewhere someone has suggested playing with Remote Interactive over HD on an Onkyo device; I'll see if there's something similar on the Pioneer that can be changed. Any other suggestions welcome.

  • Keeping FCP audio levels separate from system sound

    All --
Apart from completely shutting down Mail and iChat and any other app that could conceivably make a noise, is it possible to adjust the monitor volume of FCP separately from the system sound? Sure, I could ramp up the master levels in the audio mixer, but that would affect the actual sound levels in the edit, no?
Obviously, I want to crank my speakers when editing, but I'd also like to know when I got new mail or an iChat invitation without the alerts blasting my ears off.
    Any ideas? Thanks!

Sean - I'm not sure if you can do that. I'd guess that both the internal speakers and the stock outputs of the Mac Pro would be on the same 'circuit'.
I have an RME Fireface 400 firewire audio interface (probably overkill for your needs). In FCP preferences, I can chooose the Fireface as my sound output device.
All the system sounds go out the internal speaker of my Mac Pro.
There are lots of 3rd party audio interfaces that are far cheaper. You might ask which would be best in your desired price range on the Logic or Garage Band forums.
    Does that make sense?

  • How do I route system sounds to USB audio?

I own An M-Track USB audio interface.  Music, Videos, and Applications in general all route audio to this device properly.  In sound settings, both Input and Output are set to the M-Track.  The problem is that system sounds specifically still route to the built in speakers.  This is a problem since a lot of my work is done overnight while my wife is sleeping.  These random sounds wake her up.  Please help me figure out how to fix this.

I appreciate the answer, but if you read my question thoroughly you will notice this: "In sound settings, both Input and Output are set to the M-Track"
Most audio routes properly.  It is strictly system notifications (New emails, File transfer completed, etc) that routes to the internal audio.

  • System sounds over USB audio out

I have a white Macbook hooked up to my JVC receiver through USB (It uses the venerable Burr-Brown chipset, so you can hook it straight up to a USB port), through a USB hub.
All is well, and my iTunes list plays through the receiver's speakers just fine, as do DVDs, CDs and whatnot.
However, the system's own sound (the Ping of received mail, or the gentle swoosh of the trash can emptying) do not. They continue to play over the laptop's own 2 speakers.
In the Audio pane in System Preferences, everything is set correctly. The selected output device is the receiver, in the sound effects tab in the same pane I can set the receiver as the selected output device, but system sounds keep playing through the internal speakers.

I appreciate the answer, but if you read my question thoroughly you will notice this: "In sound settings, both Input and Output are set to the M-Track"

  • System sounds through internal speakers but other audio through USB Soundcard

    Hi there,
I am having a bit of an odd problem. I have a USB sound card and when using it plugged directly into my Macbook Pro retina's USB slot all audio comes through the sound card however when using the sound card connected to a USB hub almost all sounds except for system sound come through the speakers (e.g. deleting a file in finder noise comes out the internal speakers or sending an email sound etc.). Does anyone have any ideas on how to get all the audio to come through the sound card or as to why this is happening?
I have checked system preferences and it says USB Audio Device is the output. I have tried changing it to internal speakers and back again but this hasn't fixed the issue.
    Thanks

Applications -> Utilities -> Audio MIDI Setup; select the desired output device and click on the gear icon at the bottom, select 'Play alerts and sound effects through this device'.

My audio problem is opposite to one of your bullet points. I have a new operating system, sound was working fine, now on skype cannot be heard, iTunes will not load. All were fine before the change over. Over the past few days have gone through every type of troubleshooting offered online, my HP dv1000 came with the problem and I fixed it on the old os, just forget what I did. Recorder not working, etc.

First off, try downloading the latest Safari. I believe it's 5.1.9.  While you're there download the combo updater for Slow Leopard 10.6.8 to get your system up to the final release.
If your system generally runs well then it's unlikely that it will be necessary. In any case, it's usually a last resort.

  • No audio from laptop other than windows system sounds

    Hi
I have a HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC and the audio has stopped working. You can hear system sounds such as windows start up chime but it will not play back CD's, nothing through iTunes or Media Player. You can't hear sound from Skype or on line video's.
Tried updating the BIOS and Audio Drivers at the HP site.
At a loss what to try next? Please help

Have you gone to the control panel and clicked on sounds etc. Your volume may need to adjusted. right click

  • Delayed system sounds and no audio in web browser or itunes

    HP Envy 14 B4B15UA#ABA Windows 7
No changes to the system recently (that I'm aware of).  Suddenly I have no sound in iTunes or Chrome.  The volume equalizer doesn't show anything when sounds should be playing, and iTunes doesn't even try to play.  Also, system sounds are on about a seven second delay.  When I try to configure my speakers, I get an error that says "failed to play test tone", but then it plays several seconds later.  System "clicks" and error tones are also delayed.
I have tried searching for audio driver updates (IDT High Definition Audio CODEC), but it is current.  I have tried plugging headphones in, no dice.  I have restarted several times, and installed windows updates.  I have restored system defaults in case I accidentally changed something.  I even went into the godforsaken Beats controller to see if something was wonky there.  Nothing.  I have no idea why this is happening.  Please help.

    Hey thatpurpleone,
I see that you're not getting any sound from the speakers.
Follow this Document even though you mention there wasn't nothing that changed with the system.

  • T400 XP SP3 - Audio System Sounds are flat (as in musical pitch is flat) and go silent

Ok, this is a strange one. I just got my wife a brand new 14" T400, arrived Dec 8, 2008. It's a great laptop. The first thing I did was download latest Thinkpad drivers with the update utility, and update to latest windows patches (SP3 + everything else).
My wife and I are both musicians, so this is something we noticed right away.
The audio plays fine with MP3 files, videos, etc ... but whenever a system sound plays, like a  "Default Beep" or "Asterisk", the sound is wrong -- if the default sound is in the key of C, it's playing in B flat.
I can play audio from my older Thinkpad T60, and it sounds fine. I play it from the new T400, and it sounds like it's tired, just a little flat and dying.
The chip in the T400 is the Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221. The driver shows driver date: 7/9/2008, Version: 3.54.0.51.
Anyone else having this odd problem?
Problem 2: just manifested itself today - after coming out of standby, there was no audio for about 3 minutes. Then suddenly, as we tried playing different audio sources, youtube videos, my wife deleted an email in Outlook, and there was the little "are you sure sound" working again (flat of course).
I wonder if perhaps this problem is only an XP driver issue, and works fine in Vista with latest drivers?

    Hi All,
Has anyone else experienced this with a T400? The Windows sounds are about a tone lower in pitch than they should be. I am a musician and find it rather off-putting! Also if I record sound with Sound Recorder and play it back, the recording is about a tone lower than the original.
I've seen another T400 with the issue - anybody solved this one? I've updated the drivers ;-)
    Thanks,
    Andrew

  • Stopping audio from sleeping as I'm missing system sounds?

I tried posting this before but got no responses, so I'm trying again as this is VERY annoying.
I'm using the optical sound output from my iMac 2011 into a receiver, and am having problems with audio sleeping.
What is clearly happening is that the audio is going to sleep after 30 seconds if no sounds are played. (I can hear a pop from the speakers when the sleep occurs.)
When audio is awoken, the first second or so of the sound gets missed.  Now, when that is a system sound, e.g. mail send or arrival, they get missed completely!
I have tried Antipop which sort of works but there must be a better solution to this problem.

Some fonts are located in the folder /System/Library/Fonts/ on the Tiger installation DVD or CDs; to get at the other fonts, use Pacifist to extract them from the Tiger installation DVD or CDs.

  • System sounds through the Bluetooth headset while listening to audio

Not sure if anyone had this issue, I have read a few about cars and bluetooth connections but no mention of system sounds not operating.
I was using Motorola S9 bluetooth headset and the music was fine, but after I returned home I noticed that I had missed several text and some email notifications. The sounds operated correctly without the headset connected so, my only guess is would it be related to the Bluetooth operation?
    Thanks, Joe.
Post relates to: Pre p100eww (Sprint)

Could this be patched in the 2.0 release? I can't wait til christmas; no really, I hope they don't take that long to release the update.

  • No System Sound/Audio after updating to 10.6.2

After doing a system update to Snow Leopard 10.6.2 I've lost all system sound excluding—strangely—iChat, which still does notification pings. I don't even get the familiar "click-clack" sound when changing the volume from my keyboard.
The speakers are fine, as I can hear the iChat pings and the start-up tone. Just baffled as to what the problem could be. Any suggestions would be incredibly helpful.
Other information: I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 on a 24" iMac circa late 2007/early 2008.

I too am having this problem unless I resort to plugging in my external speakers which I don't want to use when I am not at home. I am not being given the option to switch to internal speakers oddly, please help!!!!!!!!
Another Problem: Time Machine: I am unable to restore anything now. 10.6.2 has a bug alright, this is preventing me from restoring anything on time machine back to any date on there. =/

  • Screensaver, system sounds and itunes problem

I did all the updates and even used migration assistant so my computer has been through allot already. I do not know which update affected my screen saver and optical audio but my screen saver is having the same issue with two monitors. My VGA monitor displays photos when the screen saver kicks in but my macbook just says looking for pictures. I tried reseting pram, repairing permissions and "safe boot" but nothing works. My optical audio somehow messes with my system sounds and iTunes on first song or podcast played. Sometimes the progress bar will freeze and I can't move it.(the time counter for a track in iTunes). The system sound works off and on when I use optical audio out to my stereo receiver. I talked to apple care and the genius bar and they said I might need to archive and install from the recovery discs that came with my computer. I think if I did that and did all the updates then the problem would return because I think it is a firmware or software update problem and not third party software interacting with the system.

iTunes shouldn't do that. Normally when iTunes finds that it would like to move/rename a file after download or a tag edit, and the filename it wants to use is already in use, it adds a " 1" or " 2" to the end of the filename. It does not overwrite the original file. In fact if it had reused the filename then there would be two entries in your library, which would both have the same information and content. Is this the case? How exactly is the title of the film spelt?
File & folder names are limited to 40 characters in Windows so I would expect (judging by the titles given in the store) to find the movies in a folder called:
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - P
    and to be called
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.m4v and
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallo 1.m4v
Hopefully you have a backup of the missing file as, in principle, you are only allowed to create one copy using the redemption code.

  • System sounds fade up slowly on HP Pavilion s3652uk with HP w2228h Screen

I just purchased a compact HP Pavilion s3652uk which I have connected via the supplied HDMI cable to a standard HP 22in monitor with built-in rear-facing speakers.  I selected HDMI output from the Realtek sound card and HDMI input for the monitor.  All drivers are reported as up to date by Windows Update and HP Update.  I am running Vista-64 bit.
When using the Test button to play a System Sound such as the Critical Stop sound, at first I thought sound wasn't working at all.  Then I discovered that if I click Test a few times, the sound fades up until it is good and loud.  Similarly, using the "Test Speakers" facility first gives the impression that a speaker is dead when the graphic is clicked, but then it fades up after nother click or so until it is very loud (because I have set everything on max).  Via the Realtek HD Audio Manager I have selected HDMI and turned off environmental effects and Equalizer effects.  No improvement.  When I play a DVD I can hear the sound normally, although I suspect this is because the sound stream is sustained therefore it has "faded up and stayed up".  This seems like it might be a compatibility problem running HDMI.  My next step is to stop using HDMI and go back to standard Video and Audio connections via separate leads, but obviously it would be nicer to use the recommended composite digital video/audio connection.
Anyone encountered this or got any suggestions?
    Thanks, Richard

Thanks RasterBlaster, still not working but a tiny bit of progress.  Here's what I did:
installed the Realtek driver despite their warning to use the driver supplied by the PC manufacturer.  New driver available = Realtek Digital Output, so I selected that as Default.  No sound output, because it is supplying sound to the Orange Digital Jack but I haven't got external speakers, I have got monitor built-in speakers.
Switched default back to Realtek HDMI output and sound works but with the same fade-up problem.
Checked HP drivers and found my driver was more up-to-date than the original supplied HP driver, so I reinstalled the original one just in case the new driver had introduced a bug.  Still the same fade-up problem, unchanged.  So I did a driver update to reinstall the latest driver 6.0.1.5772 again, simply to ensure I have the latest.  Fade up problem still exists.
So, the progress mentioned is that I reckon if I went out and bought a set of external speakers with subwoofer etc, provided that they can be driven from that Orange digital jack, that may well work with the newly installed Realtek driver.  It is a bit of a risk though because if it doesn't and I opened the packaging then no doubt Comet or PCWorld will not want the speakers back.
It seems kind of weird to me that HP's own PC with HP's own monitor running their own recommended software does not work correctly.
