AUDIO MYSTERY:  FCP5

After placing a piece of music (AIFF) into the timeline to edit, I noticed the music doesn't always remember the INS & OUTS. Sometimes my marker slips, causing me to delete the music completely out of the timeline, then put it back in hopes it remembers where the INCUE and OUTCUE were marked. Does anyone have this problem too? I didn't have mysteries like this when I used FCP 4.5.
Is it my settings?
Any advice will be very helpful. It seems so inefficient if I have to redo my audio in the timeline.
Thanks
k chen

Hello k...
Your problem really isn't defined clearly... what do you mean? -

  • Dual Mono Audio Mysteriously Changes to Stereo When Match Framed - Why????

    Hello everyone,
I am having a very unusual problem with the audio on my project, which I'm working on in FCP 5.1.2. All of the audio was captured as dual mono (channel 1 + channel 2), and yet when I match frame the audio clip from the sequence it shows up in the viewer as stereo, panned to -1. When I double-check the source clip in the bin, it is dual mono panned to 0, as it should be. Also, the clips mysteriously seem to pan -1 in the timeline occasionally, even on sections that were verified as being correct in timeline previously.
Does anyone have any idea why this is happening, and any solutions?
    Thank you so much,
    mynaah

mmmm this is an odd one... the only thing I can think of is that you are changing these clips once they're in the timeline. It's done with a keyboard shortcut: option+L... it will change a dual mono track to a stereo pair. You can change these files back though... typing opt+l toggles the condition back and forth.

  • Audio mysteriously disappeared, help?

I'm new to Adobe Premiere Elements 9.  I have a file that I imported.  In QuickTime 7 Pro I had pieced together video/audio clips, but then I wanted to make a movie for a gift so I bought PRE 9.  Anyway, in PRE I clipped each snippet of video/audio so I could add transitions between them.  Now, in the Timeline window, I can see both the audio and video pieces, but when I play it, only the video plays - no audio.  What did I do??  I've check all the volume controls to make sure they are not muted and the volume is at a level I could hear.  I checked the connections and am able to play/hear music on you tube.  Thanks for your help.

Looking back up to Reply # 7, it appears that the Frame Size is not that of AVCHD-Lite, which would be 1440 x 720, IIRC.
Back to your "flatline" Waveform Display, it appears that your edited Clips have become unlinked from both the CFA and PEK files.
The CFA files are the Conformed Audio files, created when one Imports a Clip with Audio into a Project. This Conforming creates a 32-bit floating-point WAV file for editing. The process also creates the PEK files, which allow PrE to display the Waveform. Those two files will be created in the Media Cache folder inside what PrE refers to as the Scratch Disks, and located where the user directs the program to place them. After they have been created, they are then linked to their respective original Clips, in the PREL (Project) file.
Usually, if those links get broken, PrE will just regenerate the CFA and PEK files, but that is not happening to you, and you are also not getting any error messages, asking for file locations, so something is happening.
Unfortunately, you are going to have to help me a bit to try this next step, if we can. I do not have PrE 9, so do not know if it has added a little feature from PrPro. You will have to poke around a bit, or maybe others will jump in and tell us that the feature has NOT been added to PrE 9. In PrPro, one can go to the Project Panel, Right-click on a Clip, and then choose to "Offline Media." There, a dialog box pops up, asking if the user wants to "Unlink the Media, or Unlink and Remove from the Hard Drive." In our case, we would ONLY want to Unlink in the Project. Again, in PrPro, one would then repeat the Right-click, and choose "Link Media," reestablishing the link. This would cause the program to regenerate new CFA and PEK files, and there would be a little progress bar at the lower-right of the program's GUI. One would not touch the computer, until that progress bar disappears. What I just do not know, and cannot test, is whether PrE 9 has added that Offline Media feature. [Editing Offline is something more often done in a pro environment.]
There is another similar feature in PrPro, called Match Frame. It does something similar to the Offline Media. I feel very certain, that PrE (no version) has Match Frame, so we would most probably just be wasting our time, looking for it.
For some more background on Conforming and the PEK file generation, see this ARTICLE.
Good luck, and let me know about the Offline Media in PrE 9. There is a "manual way" to do it, but if the feature has been added, it solves a lot of potential issues and saves some time.

  • 5.1 AIFF Audio in FCP5

I just finished mixing a 5.1 soundtrack using Soundtrack Pro 2.0.2 and rendered it as a 6 channel AIFF file. I sent it to the director who has FCP5 and when he loads it into the FCP project, he only hears the rear tracks which are all room tone for the most part.
What does he have to do to hear the whole project on his iMac?

So I go into STP and changed my mix bus to stereo 1 & 2. I re-render the file and send it off. He can hear and all is good.
I was looking through the manual and the training book I have for STP and there really isn't any mention of mixing for ProLogic or even how to properly downmix the 5.1 mix. Is there an online resource someone could point me to that explains how to take a 5.1 mix and downmix to ProLogic so that the stuff I have in the rear channels will deocde to the rear when played back on a ProLogic system?

  • Audio Mystery

Please explain!! I encoded a short video intro from FCP with compressor. I used still shots from the video and a clip of audio I imported from itunes (aiff). After taking it into DVDSP, a totally different audio clip is played, not at all what I used. The audio is from the video of one of the still shots that I used, but it's not on my timeline in FCP when I exported it. I even tried using the mysteriour audio in my timeline, now the audio doesn't fade out as it does in my FCP timeline, it ends when the video ends and ends abruptly.
    HELP!!!!

Not the exact problem, but it sound similar: crazy behaviour of Compressor. See this post that was helpful for me:

  • PSE 3 - Slideshow audio problem

    Hi,
Hope someone could help with an issue I am encountering when trying to create a slideshow I'm trying to get together for the good lady wifes pending 40th.
I'm running PSE 3 on Windows XP and a Siemens Amilo Laptop.
Problem I'm having is that the audio isn't playing when I'm previewing the slide show??
It had been working fine but now seems not to come on at all, however strangely if I play the audio in the 'edit audio' dialoge box it comes on fine???
Growing increasingly frustrated at it and ready for throwing the thing off the wall!!
I'm a bit of a newbie at this so hope someone can help??
    Cheers
    Gerry

    Dear SD Mac User,
Here is the update to the audio slideshow problem. I tried many
different things, such as changing the settings, and using a
different hard drive with iDVD installed on it. Norhing
worked, and i did want to keep the
    107 or so jpegs.
But, just for the heck of it, I did YOUR suggestion, and wittled it
down to 99 jpegs, and burned it. Guess what, it actually worked!
No silent Nixon audio mysteriously erased!
Thanks for your help as I finally got this project out! A Happy ending!
Have you ever had this 99 jegs experience before, or was it guess?
    Either way, thanks again,
I guess the program freaks if more than 99 jpegs are used!

  • Why is Organizer "deleting" partial audio on video clips?

I just installed Premiere Elements and Photoshop Elements 11 a few weeks ago on my Mac desktop (Intel dual processor, OS X 10.6.8 - Snow Leopard).  I am working with both standard definition and high definition clips from Panasonic camcorders.  It doesn't matter what format -- when imported into the organizer it loses about half of the audio.  The clip retains the video and audio lines, but the audio mysteriously "drops out" about half way through the clip.  This can actually be seen in expert view -- the audio waveforms just disappear and the line goes flat even though the original clip outside of Organizer still has audio.  I tried capturing through both Premiere and through Adobe Bridge which is the downloader I previously used.  It doesn't matter -- when the clip goes into the Organizer, part of the audio disappears.  I've got plenty of space on my hard drive and more than enough ram, so I have no idea why it's doing this.  It's very frustrating because I was so looking forward to being able to tag video clips again.  Photos import beautifully without a hitch.  It's just the video clips with audio that have this problem.  Again, I checked the clips on the camera -- audio is fully intact.  Even after uploading with Adobe Bridge the audio is intact.  But the minute it goes into Organizer, it gets messed up.  Any idea why this is happening?  Please help!  Thanks.

    waywardmuse
I realize your interest in the Organizer for tagging your files. But from a troubleshooting perspective, I would ask:
If you import any one of these files in question from its hard drive save location into Premiere Elements 11 Mac using Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets and dragging the file to the Timeline Expert view, can the video on V1 be seen and the audio on A1 be heard without issue?
You offer that you are working with standard and HD footage from a Panasonic camera. Could you please tell us the video and audio properties of these files involved as well as their file extension? What is the duration of a typical file that will not play back in the Organizer?
What players do you have installed on your computer with Premiere Elements 11?
Let us start here and then review the situation.
    Thanks.

  • Getting clean vocals from an xlr mic using macmice micplug

I have a 1 ghz powerbook using FCP5 and garageband 2. I have a sennheiser ME66 mini shotgun mic. I wanted to try recording audio from my Sennheiser mic so I bought a macmice micplug (xlr to usb)
I've tried recording audio into FCP5 and garageband, but I get a lot of noise behind the voice track.
Has anyone used the micplug with success, getting clean professional quality audio?

Something like this XLRmic-to-USB preamp should do the job OK.
    http://www.amazon.com/MXL-MICMATEC-Preamp-Condenser-Microphones/dp/B000VZ8WC2
However, the ME66 is not really a voice mic - it's a directional shotgun, with too much gain for close-miked voice (but you probably know that!)

  • Audio tracks go out of pitch then return mysteriously

Quite a mystery: for some unusual reason I found when I booted my Intel iMac duo core and started Logic Pro 7, then played a project; the audio tracks (vocal's) were out of pitch.
I adjusted them using a manual plug in and found a reasonable pitch at -97.
For some strange reason the audio tracks later readjusted themselves back to their original pitch.
I note: I did not change the tempo of these tracks as Im aware that would put the audio tracks out of pitch

A mysterious audio file opens when I open my browser. How do I find and delete it?

The other possibility is that someone with access to your machine (children?, co-worker?) set up all of your browsers to have that audio file set up as a default "home page". This is probably more likely than malware. I just tried with Safari, and it's definitely possible. Check out your Safari preferences and see what it shows as your homepage.

  • Core Audio Overload mystery

I've read countless posts on this issue and it's still a mystery to me. I've been to: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304970, read it thoroughly and tried almost all the tweaks mentioned in there (except for an external fast hard drive) and nothing works.
Mystery problem: yesterday I played my track one last time before switching off my macbook - no problems, in fact I haven't had a Core Audio overload message in a few weeks.
Today I switched it back on tried to play the exact same track with NO changes at all and I can't play it, I get a Core Audio overload message every 3 seconds of track played. I've restarted my macbook hoping it was just something weird going on and I ended a number of processes but still no luck. What's different? I have no clue. The track played fine ever since I started working on it a few weeks ago but now it won't play. Any ideas?
    Thanks

I didn't mean anything extraordinary; just look at each Channel (even those which may be hidden) & see if there are any plug-ins present as sends or inserts which aren't actually needed. If so, choose +"No Plug-In"+ instead. And if there are any plug-ins which are bypassed, then — the same thing. And if you've loaded any Audio Instruments or samples or patches you're not using — ditto.
Since Templates allow you to load plug-ins automatically, it's possible that some may have crept in that way without your realising it. (I'm not saying they did, but if they did, then purge them.)

  • Audio tracks mysteriously go out of pitch

This relates to my earlier question:
My operating system and Logic Pro application are on my iMac and, my project/songs are on my external hard drive.
I found that when I connect my external hard drive to a different computer; Mac G4,at another studio, my audio (vocal) tracks have gone out of pitch however, on most occassions are still in correct original pitch.
I have also found that when I reconnect my external hard drive back to my iMac that the audio tracks are out of pitch on some occassions but, still in original pitch most of the time.
I compensated using a mono plug in set at -97, this corrected the problem to some degree.
Quite mysteriously, the audio tracks re set themselves back to the original true pitch without any logical reason.
I note: I did not adjust the tempo of the project as Im aware this would cause this type of problem.
So far, this is a mystery, quite worrying if Ive taken my external hard drive to another studio and found I can not use my tracks because of this unusual problem.

If I burn a CD I usually change from 44.1 to 16 bit, not sure if this caused the problem ?

  • Mysterious audio file caching

I wrote a "play .WAV file" function (using getAudioClip) as part of my applet and am using it as a subroutine in my Javascript/PHP web application. The application records the user's voice, saves it on a server, and plays it back when requested. The mystery is this:
My Apache server is NOT configured to cache files. I turned off Java's caching function via Java's control panel. In spite of this, when I overwrite an audio file with new content, the application keeps playing the old content for a while. (It seems that content sticks for about 10 minutes.) I tried emptying the browser cache right after new content is recorded, but the result is the same. The old content is kept SOMEWHERE and I don't know where. It's not in Java's cache directory. It's not in the browser cache.
Can anyone shed some light on it?

    1) Check the information returned from the URL actually changes (in length/data).
    2) Create a javax.sound.sampled.Clip instead of the AudioClip.
