Audio on IChat
I have a nearly new Ibook G4 which has gone very quiet when using Ichat. I have all the sound output settings I can find at maximum but the sound through the built in speakers is only just audible. Trying to find the cause I found that part of the problem is that there is no sound through the left hand speaker at all. The speaker is NOT faulty as playing music from Itunes it works fine. Anyone got any thoughts - are there settings in Ichat - I can't see any.
I have an older iBook, and the volume on it has always been a bit low. I can't say as I've ever noticed whether or not the sound in iChat comes through both speakers or just one (though I suspect both, since i have used headphones), because I tend to "boost" the volume, no matter what.
If I'm sitting at my desk, I have my external speakers plugged in and adjust their volume. If I'm sitting on my terrace, I use headphones to help with the problem. I know I've heard others mention that the volume on these iBooks is rather low, so I suspect yours isn't much different from the norm. :S At any rate, I'd suggest using some external aid -- either speakers or headphones -- to help.

Is from the last repeat. It also applies to some repeats above that.
You will noticed I have underlined the ports.
They are different to ones higher up the Log.
The higher ones are iChat ports.
It is likely you have two connection devices that route, a modem and a router possibly.
Your IP also changes to a Non LAN IP which is also indicative of something about your LAN set up.

Satelite internet causes communication errors for audio/video ichat
Have Wildblue satelite internet, can't use the audio or video ichat. It comes up with a Communication Error. Have changed the Quicktime streaming setting to 1.5 mbps. Wildblue says it is because of latency issues and they don't support video streaming. Any ideas????

One thing to try is you could try sending yourself a email with a large attachment(around 5Mb) and once it has run for a short while then try a video call.
If the video starts quit the email sending.

Cannot have audio with iChat and AIM
Hi,
I am trying to use iChat with friends using AIM (on PC).
But I have never been able to start an audio session with someone (exchange of text messages is Ok).
The "button" with the phone remains grey (not active). So I cannot start an audio session after contact selection).
My microphone is Ok (Audio is Ok with other tool like Skype).
Also, in the contact list, I dont see any audio logo in front of their names, even if they are online (and then able to have text chats).
When PC/AIM friends want to start an audio session with me, they get the following message "[email protected] is not accepting Talk invitations or does not support the Talk feature."
What can I do ?

I have an eMac with MAC OS X 10.3.9 and iChat 2.1(v153)
I am using the micro integrated somewhere in the computer.
In networking system preferences,
the Mas OS firewall is not activated (should be activated with appropriate ports ?)
and no service is activated (some services should be activated ?).
Can you help ?
I would like to do have also video with friends but I would like to be able to do audio before !
When I see all problems in the iChat discussion, I am a little bit afraid ...
Does iChat 3 could be better ?

You will see it says (near the bottom ) that Audio only chats can not be done from AIM (on a PC) to iChat.
Trillian Basic does allow Audio Chats from PCs to Mac usiing the same AIM servers (Smae names will work). They also do a Pro version that will do Video as well (costs $25).
AIM are also working on Triton which is supposed to add this feature. (See link under the yellow DONWLOAD Now button).
Your friend can download a beta of this if he wishes but it is a very early version.

Video Chats including Audio from iChat to various PC clients
Hello,
besides using alternatives to iChat like Skype, aMSN or SightSpeed, are there any smart ways like plugins or add-ons to iChat allowing full AV (video AND audio!) conferences with various PC AV chat clients?
Most of my PC friends either use MSN, AIM or ICQ.
The "target" is to have only iChat running and to avoid having several AV clients installed on the Mac.

Binary Images Description for "iChat"is the important bit. (And then the Binary images bit is only listed so you know where we are talking about)
The three "titles" have no info inside their sections.
This means that the ports are not open somewhere.
As to which end (other than changing to AIM 5.9 as well) the problem lies is difficult to say.
1) If you Mac Firewall is On do the stuff around the Second pic here http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page4.html#_ports
2) Have you set these ports or set UPnP to work in your Modem or Router ?
3) Have you gone to System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab and set the drop down to 1.5Mbps/T1/LAN

That is not to say that AIM 5.9 does not need setting up.

Slow audio/video ichat startup connection
I work in a large hospital. I am looking at using ichat across a LAN (other .mac buddies).
I can quickly access buddies and text chat, but initiating audio/video with isight camera takes up to 5 mins. The other buddy clicks on the "accept" button for my incoming call, but then there is a 5 min lag before video connection is established. Once established we can then get reasonable video/audio. It is the initial connection that is really quite slow.
any suggestions how my IT Dept can fix this - is it a broadband issue, or a ports issue?
thanksNot quite Chris - your hospital will probably have a device or several devices distributing IP addresses connecting everyone to the network - the DHCP server. That device could have more work to do (ie number of users, traffic volume) than it is capable of delivering at speed. Using Bonjour for iChat relies on this device matching up buddies - if the device is busy you'll have to wait longer to be matched up for video chat. Ask your IT department to look at whether these devices are hitting 100% CPU - if yes that will most certainly be your problem waiting 5 minutes to connect.
Meanwhile - a separate suggestion - it sometimes helps to speed things up by reducing the number of directories your Mac looks at when searching busy networks. AppleTalk is the original Bonjour - SMB relates to communication with Windows. If performance remains unchanged simply tick them back on.

I have been trying to have an audio chat with a friend of in Germany using iChat, and he can here my audio, but I can't hear him.
We check the various audio settings, and everything looked OK, so I thought it might be a hardware problem with the mic.
As a test, he recorded a video of himself with Photo Booth – and the audio did work!
So, as a further test, he installed Skype and we did an audio call with that... and it worked.
So, any ideas why the audio would not be working with iChat? Same result with video chat, too, not surprisingly.Hi Tor,

In iChat.
In the Video Menu is the Microphone Enabled item Ticked ? (selecting it will toggle it Off or On)
In the View Menu is Show Audio Status similarly ticked ?
In System Preferences
In Sound > Input tab is the Mic or input device he wants to use selected ?
If it is, when he talks does the Blue Bar more over Halfway ? (3/4s is better but NOT Banging in to the right hand end)
Back in iChat > Preferences > Video/Audio Settings is the same Mic chosen ?
For Some Headsets particularly Bluetooth ones the iChat items needs setting "Last"
Workaround.
In both iChat and System Preferences chose any other Input device.
Then set the device/Volume in System Preferences.
Then Select the device in iChat.
(Do the same for Output)
If these things are as OK as you first thought then what is his Internet Speed ?

In your Connection Doctor (Video Menu of iChat) during a Chat, what does his Bitrate say ?
Anything close or lower than 100kbps is going to be a problem.
Does his Audio bar say he is sending you Audio ?
Is he using iChat 5.x ?
Does he have any iChat Add-ons ? (Showmacster, iUSBCam are the most likely for Audio Issues.)
IS he using an mAudio or MoTU device ?
Has it the most recent Update ?
Has he set that up in MIDI Audio Setup ? (it might pay to change the Sample rate to 44100)

I have a PowerBook G4. I am wirelessly connected to the internet via a linksys. I am trying to connect via ichat AV 3.0.1 to my firend with the same (she has connected with others so I think I have a problem)
I can text in ichat but audio does not work. I have an internal microphone that works. When I click to connect with her it says waiting for response, then connecting and then blank did not respond...on her computer it says the same thing but that I did not respond.
Can someone help me figure out what steps to take to make my ichat work?

No Audio when iChating With PC User
I've looked on the forum, but can't seem to find this particular issue. I'm using ichat 3 with OS 10.4.2 and the person I'm trying to video conference with has a PC with Windows XP and a logictech camera. We both have the latest versions of the AIM software for our respective operating systems. Also, I'm using DSL while he's on a cable connection.
We can successfully open and sustain a video chat, but I can't hear him and only for about the first minute of the connection can he hear me before the audio cuts out. Neither one of us can figure what the problem is. I've contacted another Mac user I know with the same camera and software as myself to test my own camera and both the audio and video work fine when conferencing with him.
My only conclusion is that it's an issue from the PC side that he has to configure although I'm not sure what to tell him to adjust, or it's an issue with the AIM client that were using and for some reason the audio support just isn't there for the software. Anybody have anything that will make this work, or can at least explain what's going on??

That could be adding to the problem. According to the link you sent me my up and down streams are 300 and above. My friend however is usually much lower, below 100 during video conferences. I thought that might be an issue, but in the past we've been able to get picture pretty easily and so I overlooked it. However, we went ahead and downloaded the "here" link you suggested to his PC and now the audio is very stable, but we have absolutely no video.
Considering he has a cable connection I'm surprised his bit rate is so slow, but I'm also aware that it's a community connection and that you're only as fast as the amount of traffic you're sharing it with. Also, I've been able to carry steady vc's with other Mac users even when my bit rate is in the low 100s and thier's is mid 100200s, so I thought I was getting by okay.
In any case, outside of the bit rate issue, is there any other way to get this thing to work already?! I'm tired, hungry and my food is running out. -
tried to vid chat through AIM today and found that my friend could see and hear me, but I could see but not hear my friend. Reset the mics and tried every thing we could think of but still at a loss. Any ideas?

What is your Buddy on ?
Also check System Preferences > Sound > Input tab and see the mic is selected AND the volume is correct.
Then Go to iChat > Video Menu and check Camera Enabled is checked/ticked.
Then go to iChat menu > Preferences > Video Section > Microphone Drop Down and make sure it reads the same mic/input device as System Preferences.
Then go to iChat View menu and make sure Show Audio Status is ticked.
Open the Connection Doctor, iChat Video menu, and see if the incoming Audio percent bar moves.

No Audio in iChat Screen Sharing?
I have two macs hooked up through iChat/iMessage screen sharing, and there is no audio on either side. Any help with this one?

1) Can your Video to this person ?
This will "prove" you have enough Bandwidth (Internet Speed) and that the Audio works.
Screen Sharing and Video uses the same ports for the Audio part.
2) Is the System Preferences > Sound > Input choice and the iChat/Messages menu > Preferences > Video > Microphone Drop down showing the same Choice of possible input devices ?
3) In the Video menu of the App is Microphone/Audio Chat Enable ticked ? (wording changes from Snow Leopard to Messages versions)
Toggling this line will add and remove the tick and Turn Off or On the Mic.

Video/Audio on iChat not always working
I am trying to iChat with my friend (video/audio), but the green calling button won't show up next to her name and mine either. Even when I right click on her name it won't let me video. We have videod before so it's not like it has never worked. We even did it earlier today. I don't know what's wrong!

Odd that it should change during a Session.
Have you truned Off the camera ?
This is a setting in the Video Menu of iChat. In iChat versions 3, 4 and 5 it reads "Camera Enable" in Version 6 is reads "Video Chat Enabled"
In either case it should be ticked. Selecting it toggles the tick and the Function On or Off.
Next check the View menu.
This should have Show Video Status ticked.
IF it appears that these are both ticked then return to the Video Menu and aopen the Connection Doctor > Capabilities and tell us what it says (Are they all green ?)

Only right speaker working when doing audio on iChat...!

I just got the new MacBook Pro and when I use the audio features of iChat the audio of the person I am talking to only comes out of the right-hand side speaker! Other sounds come out of the right and left, such as message alerts, and my speakers otherwise are working fine. Only when I engage someone in an audio chat does the sound from their end come out only on my right speaker...
Any ideas anyone?!

That is normal when video conferencing with the Macbook pro. The microphone is located on the left hand side, and to reduce feedback the left speaker is muted when conducting a video chat.

As soon as i connect to my GF who is using a windows computer through aim on ichat my i chat looses all sound, we can hear each other in the microphone/speakers of each others computers. I also loose the little messaging sounds in ichat on my computer does anyone know how to fix this?

I must admit to noticing this myself recently. (I had not pinned it down to AIM on PC Buddies).
I think it may be to do with the AIM servers
But try these:-
iChat Alerts sounds set in iChat > Preferences > Alerts are played by the computer as if they were System Alerts.
The control for the Volume of these is in System Preferences > Sound > Sound Effects tab
I would check these two things first.
Alerts sounds can also be attributed to individual Buddies in the Buddy List by Clicking on them once to highlight and then doing a Get Info (Apple key and I together) to bring up their card and then using the Actions tab.
Sometimes an Individual setting will clash with the global settings and cause issues.
Remove any Individual settings.
If this does not work delete com.apple.ichat.plist
This is in Users/(your account)/Library/Preferences which you have to go to Manually as Spotlight and Find do not look in here.
This will delete all the settings set in the iChat Preferences such as the Menu Bar icon , Bubble colour, Font Style, Font Colour, Save Transcripts etc. as well as any saved Status Messages. It will also reset the Alerts to Defaults along with everything else.
Restarting iChat will recreate the .plist from Defaults.
