  • Quicktime not play video only Audio with Lion

I am trying to watch avi file through Quicktime the I only get audio and no video after Lion installed.
    I downloaded Perian again
    Whats the problem?

There seems to be an issue with the version of Quicktime X (10.1) in Lion and Perian version 1.2.3.
The are several options in terms of other media players (VLC, MPlayerX, RealPlayer [ugh…], and others…) that will handle FLV files with ease. Alternatively, you could run your video files through an encoder (HandBrake, MPEG Streamclip, SmartConverter, etc.) converting the files into something QuickTime naturally understands like an MP4 or MOV.
But, you were probably happy when everything just worked with the QuickTime / Perian dynamic duo and just want it the way it was. It seems the best way to make this happen, is to go back to using Perian 1.2.2, for the moment anyway.  Seems to do the trick for anyone with this problem, so…
    1. Remove Perian 1.2.3 from the system.
Quit all your apps, expecially QuickTime. Open System Preferences and click on Perian.  You're looking for the "Remove Perian" button; just click and if it asks, type your password. Next, back to the main System Preferences screen where you right-click(or control-click) on the Perian icon.  A menu pops up with the choice to remove the Preference Pane.  Click on it and Perian is officially uninstalled.
    2. Restart the computer
Probably overkill, but better than having to repeat the process because you didn't.
    3. Download and install Perian 1.2.2
    Get it here: http://perian.cachefly.net/Perian_1.2.2.dmg , or here:http://www.videohelp.com/download/Perian_1.2.2.dmg
Once its downloaded mount the disk image, but proceed with care.  Perian will likley try to upgrade itself right after you install it. Best thing to do: disconnect from the net for the install process. Then as usual double-click the "Perian.prefpane" file, choose who you'd like to install it for, and enter your password as needed. Finally, right before reconnecting your machine to the world, uncheck the "Automatically Update" box in the Perian preferences.
Try testing one of the FLVs in QuickTime or QuickLook and with a bit of luck, radio becomes TV.
Oh… and on the off chance it doesn't work and you want to watch some FLVs?  Use VLC (http://www.videolan.org), or convert them with HandBrake (http://handbrake.fr).
    Good luck!

  • Optical audio in Lion switches off after 30 seconds

I have a new iMac 27" Computer purchased November 2010 with Snow Leopard on. I have upgraded to Lion OS the day it came out.
When I started using it, I noticed that the Optical steam (red beam) would switch off after roughly 30 seconds. I researched this issue and found that OS X powers down the Sound Hardware after 30 seconds if not used, as it is fine under Bootcamp with Windows 7.
So I used a program called Sound 1.0,1 to stop the Optical connection switching off, by playing a silent sound every 20 seconds. But now Lion does not support PowerPC programs by Rosetta, so am back to the original problem, that if the hardware has switched off, I miss the first 2 or 3 seconds of the start of the audio, like Skype announcing that some has signed in / out or on MSN as a message notification.
Any ideas to sort this annoying problem be most grateful.
    Peter

    Thanks for your help Andrew.
Have tried that and seems to be working at the mo (touch wood). See how it goes.
Can't tell you what a difference it is compared to the monitors speakers.
    Thanks Again

  • Quicktime only exports audio in Lion

I have just upgraded to Lion and I can no longer get Quicktime to export video. When I select Export>Format>480p (for example) only the audio will export. What's goign on? Is there a fix for this?

    What version are you using?
I was using QT 7 Pro version 7.6.6 as indicated by the ability to select different video compression formats as stated above.
As far as I know, there is only one QuickTime version available for OS X Lion, Version 10.1. It is the program that came with the new OS X Lion.
If you had QT 7 Pro installed on your Snow Leopard system at the time it was upgraded to Lion, then it would still be there after the upgrade. In addition, users can install the QT 7 Player to Lion after upgrading and key it for QT 7 Pro use if they so desire.
I was capable of exporting video and sound in Snow Leopard. Here is the flow process: In OS X Lion, open a .mov file. Go to File then Export. At the bottom of the dialog box it says Format. You can choose 480p, 720p, 1080p, then a line, then iPod..., Ipad..., Mac & PC, then a line, then Audio Only. These are the presets.
You still should be able to do so. I just ran four additional tests using four of the QT X "presets" at random. All successfully created an H.264/AAC file with playing video.
I'm not sure you are using the same version of QuickTime or the same OS if you do not see these things. At any rate, no matter the selection I choose, the only output I receive is an audio file. I think there is a bug in the new QuickTime.
I wasn't. That is why I asked which you were using so I could try and duplicate your work flow. Since I have no problem converting files, it does not sound like a bug—rather a bad software install or a conflict between the QT Player X and some third-party app you have installed on your system which I don't. However, you still have not indicated what video compression format was used in the source file. WMV for instance would be playback compatible if you had the free Flip4Mac player codec component installed but not conversion compatible without paying a minimum of $29 for the WMV "import" codec.

  • Garbled Audio After Lion Upgrade

I've scanned the forums, but the only audio bug I can find seems related, but not identical to mine.  I just installed OS X Lion on my Mac Pro (2x2.66 GHz Dual-Score Zeon with 4GB Ram).  Now all of a suddenly all my audio sounds garbled, almost inverted.  Some musical elements are strong, but human voice is indecipherable.  This is completely strange.
I've tried messing with preferences, and the Audio MIDI Setup like some others have suggested, but to no avail.
    Help!
    Sno

I also have popping/clicking in many forms of sound/video after Lion upgrade.  iMac 2.66GHz Core 2 duo, 6g ram
Putting the computer to sleep and waking it works for a time, but it eventually returns.
A quicker fix which likely does the same thing is to send a kill -9 signal in Terminal.app to the "coreaudiod" process and force it to restart.
    nestor:~ fbhjr$ ps aux | grep coreaudio _coreaudiod    60080   1.0  0.1  2453812   6436   ??  Ss   11:32AM       0:06.78 /usr/sbin/coreaudiod
    nestor:~ fbhjr$ sudo kill -9 60080

  • No audio after lion

Why do I have no audio out on Mac Mini 2009 after installing Lion?

    Hi Rob,
Long shot, but it worked once this week...
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back

  • No Audio in Lion

I recently upgraded to Lion on my Imac.  Everything worked fine, including the audio.  Then I installed ProTools (version 7.3.1).  After the Protools installation, the audio quit working.  Itunes does not play.  Garage Band won't even load.  (I get a message saying the GarageBand driver 10202 is missing.)  When I click "Sounds" under System Preferences, I get the swirly wheel and nothing happens.
If this were a PC, I'd simpy google the necessary audio driver, download it, and move on.  But I can't find such a driver when I google it for a mac.
Can someone please help?  I am not a computer Geek and don't know what to do !!

Tried that, but when I click on the Audio-Midi icon, nothing happens.  The icon heading turns from blue to gray, but that's it.  No program opens up.  No folder...no nothing. It's like the entire audio system has been zapped.

  • Loss of outgoing audio with Lion

After upgrading to Lion I've noticed no one can hear me during chats.  I can hear and see them (one or multiple) fine, but they can't hear me.  I'm using AIM.  I was able to do everything fine before the upgrade and I haven't changed anything besides upgrading.  I'm running a MBP (late '09) and have it hooked up to a Cinema Display.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Hi,
I would largely agree that this is one of those things that has not been picked up by testing before release.
That is not to say though that we can't find a Workaround.
I would next look at the com.apple.audioDeviceSettings.plist in the Hard Drive/Library/Preferences/Audio folder
Deleting this used to be a "fix" prior to Snow Leopard.  (Less effective afterwards for some reason)
I would look in to Sound Add-ons like Sound Flower or Audacity.
Then MIDI Inputs via the Audio MIDI Utility in Applications/Utilities.
This does presume that there is enough Bandwidth to run a chat.
Check the Connection Doctor during a chat.
(You need to be able to Upload at least 384Kbps to be Host of a 4 way chat)
After that I would be tempted to delete com.apple.ichat.plist itself (Depending on what your changes are to the iChat Preferences and Saved Status Mesages as you will lose these) as it stores the Bandwidth speed it can "See"
The File is in your Home Folder/Library/Preferences.

  • No Audio on Lion

Since i upgraded to lion i have no audio , Audio setting not accessible crashing and Disabled ..

I also suffer from this problem ("no audio device found" including the builtin speaker).
I've read threads regarding unplugging/replugging headphones or speakers, repairing permissions, restarting in safe mode, reinstalling system software, and mushroom enemas (kidding about this, not the rest).
I'm an audio professional; this issue is a total blocker for me. Apple has fallen down on the job(s) here; let's see if they respond to it. If not I will pray to the powers that be they continue to support/update Snow Leopard...

  • Video capture no longer working with Lion

Does anyone know why USB video capture (XLR8 USB 2.0) would no longer capture audio with Lion.  It worked great at importing old VHS home movies to my Mac before the upgrade to Lion and now, while I can still see the video, I no longer hear audio.  Anyone have any ideas?

    Well, heck.
I am so sorry you guys couldn't get through to me. you can email, [email protected] anytime for full support.
On the issue of Lion, and the XLR8 devices?
Apple did change a number of items, that limited the XtraView's ability (this is the one, with the built-in audio on the older 2820 chipset). Audio, just won't work in 64-bit mode.
The easy workarounds are to boot into 32-bit mode (hit 3 and 2) on boot.
To check if you are in 64 bit mode, go to the System Profiler (Apple Menu > More Info > Software (left pane) and see if the 64 bit is loaded.
If in 32-bit mode you are still having an issue, please check that you are running XLR8 version 1.4.6. You can download new versions at http://XLR8.com.
You can email XLR8 for a free audio cable (Mac sound jack to RCA audio), or for $25, XLR8 can upgrade you to the new 2860 device that works in 64-bit mode.
Now, that hopefully, we have you working again... about Daystar. Actually  XLR8 has always developed, built and shipped the devices. Daystar just had a bigger name and was an Apple Authorized Reseller. But, the Apple relationship ended, and Daystar closed.
XLR8, LLC will continue to support the devices and we will continue to provide great products and good support (sorry, we are a small company, and due to limited time... I can only provide "good" support. Maybe one day, it will be great.)
We are expanding the website at XLR8.com. You are always welcome to provide feedback and suggestions.
Oh, and lastly, thanks to Thiago, for sending me an email, and alerting me to the thread...

  • How to convert audio to 'uncompressed' audio

It is obvious from all the reports, that there is a problem with FCPX audio en 'Lion".
I have experienced this too. To avoid this I have been  trying to convert the audio of my movies to aiff.
So far I didn't succeed. My camcorder (panasonic SD900) records to surround or stereo and uses compression,
I do not know what format. So how can I convertcompressed audio to 'uncompressed' audio?

You can do this using a free application called MPEG Streamclip. Open your file, and then "Export Audio..." from the File Menu. Choose AIFF, 48Khz, and stero. (if you want to retain surround, it can be done but will be much more complicated). This will create an .aif file that you can now import and use in place of the audio that is part of the clip. If you have quicktime pro, you could also create a new .mov file with the video from the original media and the audio from the .aif file...then you can import the new .mov file to FCPX.

  • Mac mini 2011 HDMI audio issues

What are the known issues with HDMI audio with Lion and the new Mac minis?
I'm in the process of swapping out an older Mac mini that was connected to my home theater (Pioneer SC-05 reciever, Pioneer TV), with a new 2011 i5 Mac mini.  The old Mac required use of a minidisplay port to HDMI adapter, and a toslink adapter to get audio to receiver through an optical cable.  Previous setup was working fine, but with the new 2011 Mac mini swapped in with the direct HDMI connection to the Pioneer SC-05 receiver, I'm not getting 5.1 audio.  The video is fine and is being passed through to the TV, but the receiver is only doing dolby prologic audio, even though the movies are Dolby Digital 5.1.
I'm using Plex .934 on the Mac.  Audio on the Mac is set to HDMI.  Plex is set to Dolby (AC3) digital capable receiver, etc.

Hi All, I have the new 2011 macmini to replace the 2010 version. I had issues with HDMI sound as well, but it turns out the issue lies in having AND the HDMI cable in AND a toslink/headphones cable.
In the 2010 version you could select the Sound output to go via HDMI or Analog.
In the 2011 version (if you have plugged-in a cable in the headphones) the HDMI sound output is impossible to choose. It is only selectable when you have unplugged the headphones cable. So what is the use of the Output settings if you cannot select anything if you have more than 1 output.....
The guy form AppleCare told me this is a firmware bug that 'should' be solved.....
When I unplug the headphones and start a movie in Movist, I have DTS and DD. With VLC it does not work, but that has to do with the upgrade to Lion (see the VLC forum).
I assume the firmware upgrade will come soon otherwise I will be VERY dissapointed in Apple quality this time and will certainly stop buying new Apple gadgets when they come out. As this was the reason why I switched from Microsoft to Apple......

  • New iTunes can not play music, can not locate songs in my music library

I only use iTune on my PC, so this Should be simple. I downloaded a new version of iTunes when prompted to do that. With the new version, I cannot play my music. It asks me to locate songs, but nothing helps locate them. I put ogver 4000 songs on my hard drive and now, thanks to going with the prompt, I cannot play any of them. What can this low tech 68 year old music-lover do to listen to his songs once again?

I'm afraid the problem is more widespread than just iTunes and the update didn't fix it. There's a thread out there about users not getting any sound/audio in Lion after wake from sleep or just having it idle for a long while.
Hopefully, Mac OS X 10.7.2 will fix the issue.

  • ITunes will not play music, songs stuck at 0:00

I know this is a frequent question as I've spent three hours searching through the support discussions here as well as elsewhere online, but none of the possible solutions I found posted worked for me.
The problem, if you're unfamiliar with it, is that iTunes will not play any music (either songs I've ripped or songs I've bought off of the iTunes Store).
I've tried updating iTunes and Quicktime, uninstalling and then reinstalling both, updating my audio drivers, playing with the preferences of both iTunes and Quicktime, made both programs the defaults for all associated file types, and rebooted countless times.
I'm on a 3-month old Dell Inspiron running Windows 7 if that makes a difference.
Any new suggestions anyone has or something random you may have tried that solved a similar problem would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • Is there a fix for Mountain Lion audio output settings after the laptop goes to sleep and wakes back up?

Mac Book Pro running Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.5 after the notebook sleeps audio and video does work (for example on YouTube).  I have been able to temporarily work around this by toggling the settings on Built-in Output in Audio Midi Setup, Audio window between 2ch-20bit Integer and 2ch-24bit Integer.  But this is a temporary fix until the laptop sleeps again.
When it's not working, all system sounds (emails "dings", delete file "swish", etc.) are silenced, and video playbacks on YouTube and elsewhere freeze and have no audio until the Audio Output settings are toggled then they all immediately start working.
Has anyone encountered the same?  Have a long term fix for this annoyance?
I cannot upgrade the OS to 10.9 Mavericks yet because of a corporate policy - there is some conflict with 10.9 and our corporate VPN connection.
