Audio only coming out one side of headphone port - Retina MBP

I bought a retina MBP a few months ago, and suddenly the headphone port only outputs to the right side. It does it with anything I plug in to it, so it's definitely not the speakers/headphones. It's also not the balance slider in the system preferences > sound menu.
Does this mean it's a hardware problem? I'd hate to have to send it in for repair, but this is driving me crazy.
Thanks for any help!
edit: I've also already reset the SMC to no avail.

System Preferences > Accessibility > Sound
Make sure that "Play stereo as mono" is not enabled.
Headphone jack fits in snug in the port?
Tried resetting PRAM?
If these steps do not help, you may have to contact Apple.
Best.

  • Audio only coming out of left side of headphones

Hey all, I got my Ipod Video 8 months ago. Everything was perfect until recently. One day, I turned on my Ipod and sound was only coming out of the left side of the headphones. I thought it was the headphones, so I tried the headphones on a computer. And it was fine on the computer. I tried 3 different sets of headphones on my Ipod and still the same problem, the sound only comes out of the left side. If I move the jack around, sometimes sound will come out of the right side, but only briefly. Any suggestions on what I can do?

  • Audio only coming through one ear

Hi, my fifth generation iPod only has audio coming through one ear, and I know that this is an issue with the audio port, and the contact points wearing out. I know it is not my headphones, but is there any way to clean the points, or to replace the audio port without buying a whole new iPod?

I believe I have the same problem with you guys but managed to get it solved.
Firstly, I noticed the sound only came out from Right side of the headphone. Moreover, it only came out at maximum level which I cannot turn volume down. When I tried, I could only either have maximum level volume or mute (when turn volume lower to minimum).
I tried taking the jack out half way.. and I had sound for both ears but still at max level.
Then I searched here and found the suggestion for basic steps of 5R.. Reset, Retry, Reinstall, Restore.. (only remember 4 out of 5 here)
Anyway, after my first try with 'Reset' -
    1) toggle 'hold' button to on and off position then
    2) hold both 'select' button and 'menu' button down at the same time for 6-10seconds.
After I turned my ipod on again, I have volume in both ears and I can certainly adjust volume level now. This solves the problem for me.
The only issue now is that I think I have louder volume on left ear than the right one this time but only slightly.
Hope this works for you guys.

  • When trying to play music from my sons iPad through his Beat Pill Speaker via Bluetooth, the sound is only coming through one side.

If I play the Beat Pills via Bluetooth with my iPhone, sound comes out of both sides. Is there a setting on his IPad I need to alter?

I've done that, and still no sound is coming out the speakers....
It does say the "type" of the device is Bluetooth Headphones, when its a stereo, if that makes any difference?

  • Audio only coming out center speaker

I just created a timeline in fcp using stereo tracks for the audio. I then exported QT and used Idvd to burn
When I play the DVD the menu plays out audio in all speakers including base, but when the movie plays
It only comes out the center speaker, any ideas why?

Sounds like your audio is primarily the same in both Left & Right channels, and your receiver is set to decode as Dolby Pro Logic, which takes all equal properties from the LR and steers them to the Center.

  • Sound only coming from one speaker on Macbook Pro Retina

I recently discovered, due to the lack of saxaphone solo's while listening to DMB, that one side of my speakers doesn't work. No sound comes from the right speaker, resulting in loss basically half of a song. The left side works fine, but zero sound comes from the right. Suggestions?

  • Audio only records from one side

I am using a firewire solo...when I try to record guitar or mic through it into logic it only records on the left side (no sound coming from right)...
    Doesn't happen in Garage Band.
    Thoughts?

Well, first, make sure you are aware of what channel you are using on your interface. Then go to I/O in the track pannel in logic that you wish to use. Make sure it coressponds to the appropriate channel. MONO.

  • Audio only comes out of the right head phone on my iPhone 4?

I've just bought an iPhone 4 16GB off a family friend and the phone was in fully working order, I've seen it and used it. It's been restored back to factory default and now audio only comes out of 1 head phone through  the audio jack? I've checked inside the jack for anything in there and I've used 4-5 pairs of head phones I know are working having used them in other devices. I've used this phone in the past with the head phones so I know it does work. I've tried doing a reset, same problem still occurs. Any idea's at all?

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. If not under warranty Apple will exchange your iPhone for a refurbished one for:

  • Light coming out of side of slider

Ive noticed that when the keypad light is on, there is a slight gap on the side of the slider which is letting light out. one side is fine but there is definetley a gap on the other. is there anyway this can be fixed, as obviously dust can get in and possibly condemsation.
    many thanks.

I also tried jamming a toothpick inside to turn it off which didn't work as well
The toothpick is not a good idea. I would advise against doing that anymore. You stand to damage the port in ways that are not covered by your warranty.
The only way to solve this is to plug and unplug a headphone plug into the port a few times. If that doesn't cure it, then the sensor itself is malfunctioning and will have to be replaced under warranty by Apple.

  • Sound only come out one earphone.

    Hello,
The sound in my iPod only comes out the left speaker/headphone. If I jiggle the connection to the iPod a bit it will fix it but if I don't continue you to hold it it will go back to just coming of the left earphone/speaker. It is not the headphones because it does it on any headphones and in the car. Anyone know how to fix this? Thanks.

You might want to send your iPod in for service (if your iPod is under warranty).
You can arrange an iPod service request online here:

    Reset the SMC and PRAM
    SMC Reset:
    Shut down the MacBook Pro.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM:
    Shut down the MacBook Pro.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Sound only coming out of one ear.

So recently my ipods sound has only been coming out of one ear. I thought it was the headphones so I bought a new pair but it's still not working. Any ideas?

It is a bad contact between the iPod earphone jack with the plug.

  • Is there any way to keep the music playing through the headphones connected through the headphone jack, while also playing the music through a bluetooth device, such as speakers - so the audio is coming out of both devices simultaneously?

When I connect my bluetooth speakers, the sound stops coming out of the headphones (connected via the hardwire jack), and then comes back when I turn off the bluetooth speakers. I would like to have audio coming out of both...
    Anyone?

Thanks Kiwi. It doesn't make sense to me though, as that would seem to be only a simple change in the operating system, not a hardware 'necessity'.

  • My ipod audio only coming through the right headphone whats wrong?, My ipod audio only coming through the right headphone whats wrong?

Ive tried with mulitple headphones but my audio on my ipod is only coming through the right headphone. Whats wrong with my ipod? WIll I need to purchase another one?

I don't know if this is a common issue: I bought an iphone from someone and notice that only the plug design of the stereo headphone that comes with it fits in its receptacle. I tried others that are generally for the same size but they can't go deep enough in the receptacle thus can't get any audio. One thing I noticed is that this iphone's receptacle is deeper in the device than usual, so any other plugs other than the one provided can't fit. I can't use my external speakers with it!!! I fail to understand this. All all iphones like this or is it a defect particular to mine? After all, my ipod touch doesn't have this issue! If anybody knows, please tell me.
