Audio only cross dissolve?

If I want to cut picture, but ad an audio only cross dissolve to soften the sound cut, can this be done in one quick and easy step?  I found a tutorial that shows how by seperating the audio and then make a storyline and then add a dissolve (here it is http://reels.creativecow.net/film/audio-only-dissolve-in-final-cut-pro-x) but it's three steps, so I was hoping it could be done in one easy click.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

This is one of those basic things that hopefully will get added back in one of the next few builds
(Along with things like better marker implementation.)

  • Cross dissolve and still frame problem

Sorry for reposting this issue but I am still have problems.  In fact, it is extremely frustrating and I don't know why.
I am using FCP X 10.0.8 and when I try to add cross dissolves to some still frames it will not allow me.
I get the following error msg.
The Japanese error msg says that there is insufficient media length outside the clip edge to make a transition.  And it asks whether I want to make a ripple trim to the media in order to make the transition.  It says that if I decide to do so then the overall project duration will be shortened.  However, even if I decide to do the later it will not let me make the cross dessolve.
As you can see there should be enough length outside the clip edge to allow this.  Or am I misleading myself in this view?
According to me - and I know that I am a sheer novice at this, there should be enough media length to allow the transition.  This is happening in not only cross dissolves but any other dissolve which I attempt to add.  The problem seems to be intermittent or varies.  If I replace the still frame then sometimes it will allow the transition but effects subsequent frames.  Either putting in "flash" or bogus frames - even just a black frame.  These I can only detect when I expand the timeline to the very limit.  And on some occassions there is nothing whatsoever that seems to be blocking the adding of the cross dissolve.  This will be the 3rd time which I have had to restart the project and it is getting rather annoying, not to say that I am approaching the time limit which is adding even more pressure.
Can you suggest what the problem is and how I should go about rectifying it please?  Is anybody else having the same issue?
    Thanking you,

This is what I see but it doesn't quite make sense to me.  One, I don't know why there should be two AUDIO01 files showing.  The still frame which I am trying to add the crossover to is FRTOTSUKA.  It will allow me to add to the end but not to the start.  The same is happening with a couple of other frames.  If I add one to the start it won't allow me to add it to the end.
    Hope I am making sense.
    Thanking you,

  • Transition (cross dissolve)  has random audio

    Hi Gang,
Since I have been using I MOVIE HD, I try to do a transition joining two clips (cross dissolve) and reguardless of the lengh of the transition, it pulls in a piece of audio from some other part of my project.
I only get this audio problem when I use cross-dissolve, overlap or fade out. The other transitions are normal. My project is due late this week and hope I can find a FIX in time.
I can silence the transition but it gives me a gap with NO audio.
Any advice will be appreciated. Peace, Joe Ray from the Kenai River in Alaska.

    Hi Sue,
Many thanks... It worked. You saved my project timelime and completion day. Peace, Joe Ray

  • Audio in Clip1 continues across Clip 2 (no sound) during a Cross Dissolve

    Hi,
Just got a new Intel Mac Pro with heaps of RAM & HDD's to use for my part time wedding video production business.
I have a problem in iMovie 06, which I just can't find a solution for.
When I place a cross dissolve between say clip 1 & clip 2 the audio from clip 1 continues across the full cross dissolve with NO audio in the cross dissolve from clip 2. It is only when the playhead cross over the cross dissolve to clip 2 that clip 2 sound can be heard!
This is VERY annoying when clip 1 has quite audio & clip 2 is nosiey - I get a instant increase in volume when the playhead goes from the back of the cross dissolve to clip 2!
    Can anyone help!
    Thanks,
    Trav

Try selecting Show Clip Volume Levels in the View menu. Then select the transition and expand your time line as far as it can go to view the transition. You will see that the transition has a volume line running horizontally through it, just like any other clip, that lets you adjust the volume by dragging the line up or down. It sounds to me like your transition has the volume line pulled all the way to the bottom, muting all sound in the transition. Adjust the volume line upward in the transition. If I am correct, the sound from Clip 1 and Clip 2 should be blended into a smooth transition. Worth a try, anyway.

  • Cross dissolve problem - only works as fade in with graphics clips

I inserted three graphics clips with transitions (cross dissolve default) at the beginning of a sequence. The transitions only seem to work as fade-ins I have plenty of extra frames beyond the edit section of the clips. I tried to adjust the transitions in the transition editor - it shows the transition aligned to start at the edit, but won't allow mw to choose to center it on the edit or end on the edit.
Thanks for any help you can provide

Thank you - no, there seems to be a handle only on the left side of the edit (to the left of the transition - which sits only to the right of the edit). On the right side,(in the zone of hte transition) the cursor shows the symbol for the roll tool - r. Excuse my limited understanding of the interface and tools - I am just beginning to learn FCE.
I will be away from the workstation until tomorrow morning.

  • Audio only dissolve???

In FCP 7 you could add an audio only dissolve by Option Command T
This does not work in  FCPX. Why not?
How can you do this as simply in FCP X?
I saw one explanation of how to do one on Creative Cow but it was a ridiculous 5 step process for a simple audio only dissolve.
This can't be the only way.
It should be as simple as a Option Comman T or even more simple if possible.
Geesh why is that so hard?

In the timeline I can double-click on the waveform part of the clip and it expands the audio. I'm using 10.0.4 and that may be a new feature. Another way is to control-click (or right click) the clip and choose, "Expand Audio."
If you expand the audio on two adjacent clips, you'll be able to do an audio only transition.
    Good luck!

  • No audio cross dissolve in iMovie 10.0.8/Yosemite?

I know iMovie is not a professional editing solution, but I am baffled why I cannot cross-dissolve audio clips but I can do so with picture.
Before the flamers start in on me, I am going to be teaching an editing class in an inner city magnet school and the program was mis-managed, which is why myself and another are coming in. The students, very bright and very passionate about filmmaking, are not up and running on Final Cut X or any other "more professional" editing platform yet, and in order to meet a deadline, a much simpler solution like iMovie is going be the ticket.
So, it has been a while since I used iMovie for anything, but it seems to me Apple has hamstrung it and removed a lot of features I remember.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much in advance!

"I am baffled why I cannot cross-dissolve audio clips but I can do so with picture"
Well it's done automatically in the case of two video clips with attached audio that have a Cross Dissolve transition between them.
When you have detached or independent audio clips just overlap them and use the fade handles to fade one out and the next in.   See  below:
    See: http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov3b5ded23e for more details

  • FCPX cross-dissolve on only one end of a clip?

How do you apply an effect (in this case, Cross-Dissolve) to only the beginning or end of a clip?  The program automatically applies the effect to both ends of a clip, and I have to delete the one I don't want (added step, added time, time is money, blah blah blah )
Here's what I'm trying to do:  I have my main storyline, and in a secondary storyline I want to fade a clip in at a certain point...but I don't want it to fade out. Adding the cross-dissolve at the beginning saves a lot more time than keyframing the opacity.
Yeah, I'll say the same thing everyone else does:  "Well, that's what I did in legacy FCP.  How do I do it in FCPX?"
    Thanks in advance.
    Jonathan

hit cmd T but why? where has copy/cut/paste/add transition et al gone from the right click? It just seems a backward step having to use a keyboard again. Sadly I can now no longer use a programed 15 button edit shuttle/controller under my left hand and a five button hyper scroll mouse under the right. Hardly ever used the keyboard in previous versions. This has to be a backward step. Forever tippy tap on the keyboard...so so slow, wasted seconds for extra moves just to get something to happen. Are we all forgetting just how fast it was to apply a transition, copy then bang bang bang along the timeline pasting it in the joins?

  • How does one create a video cross dissolve without an audio cross fade in FCP-X??

    Greetings:
This is a no brainer in 'legacy' Final Cut, but I am completely stumped in FCP-X. Situation is thus:
Main story line consists of a speaker. I would like to drop stills onto/into the storyline while the speaker continues uninterrupted. I've tried connecting to the storyline,  overwriting to the storyline, creating a secondary storyline, creating transitions with available media, with full overlap -- all for naught. The outgoing bits of the cross dissolve have a weird audio hiccup that I cannot get rid of. I simply want to fade a still in and fade it out (I appreciate I could keyframe opacity with a still connected to the main storyline, but that seems slightly nuts -- this should be a keystroke). I am assuming I'm missing something -- possibly something really simple, so, apologies for being a dolt, but I could really use a hand here.
    Many thanks
    longstrider

Detach the audio using Control-Click.  The audio will then have its own fade that you can adjust.  If you want to cross fade audio clips just overlap another audio clip by placing it below the first audio clip.  Overlap can be adjusted for the amount of time you want for a dissolve.  You can also pull the fade control in the vertical middle of the end of each audio clip to make an audio fade in/out.  Holding that fade control while pressing the Control key gives you the option to select different types of fade curves.  Hope this helps.

  • Problem with audio overlap for cross dissolve transition

I am using FCPX v10.8 to edit 1hour long lectures.  When I edit out a short mis-speak, for example, the audio will overlap too, along with the video.  Not good.
Someone told me to try expanding the audio video and that definately helps.  But when I do additional edits, the audio tracks  keep changing to different levels (FCP7 tracks which i wish we still had) and I start running into overlap problems again so I have to keep going back and making sure I havent messed up some of the earlier ones.  Driving me nuts.  Is there any other way to edit or some other transition that will do the same as cross dissolve for the video but not audio.  There are not too many transitions that will work for one person speaking as in a lecture.  Cant fade in and out, etc.  Appreciate any help.  Urgent!  have deadlines to meet.
    thank you
    Jac

Expanding audio/video is the first step. The second step in to bring up the trim tool (T). Then you roll the audio and/or the video. The levels should be easily controlled as well with keyframes.
Other than dissolve, the video transition of choice is fade to color.

  • Final Cut Pro X 10.0.5 Create Storyline with Audio-Only Clips in order to add crossfade transition.

Final Cut Pro X version 10.0.5 – How to Create Storyline with audio-only clips. I'm following exercises in Diana Weynand's Pro Training Series, and this function is greyed out. Trying to create crossfade transition. New Compound Clip can be activated however.

Chapter 7. Page 269. Exploring Audio Transitions. Selecting two audio clips, then control-clicking the clips. The dropdown menu to Create Storyline or (Command G) is greyed out. The function no longer seems to be available. I've found other functions that no longer apply with the latest version in relation to the book, and I assume that this is another one. But I'm trying to follow the book the best I can. I know there's a workaround. I can simply select an edit point and add the cross dissolve (Command T), but I wonder if this accomplishes the requested exercise from the book.

  • Creating cross-dissolve from still photo to video

    Hello all ...
I'm try to create a simple cross-dissolve between a black-and-white photo (imported into FCE as an RGB Photoshop file) and a color (1440x1080) video clip. My problem is that FCE will only insert the dissolve on the right (video) side of the edit, the result being that the photo abruptly goes to black, followed by a gradual fading-in of the video. This is not the effect I want – I'm hoping to create a smoother transition between the two. I suspect that I haven't saved the still photo in the correct format, but I can't seem to find any help in my various FCE books.
So: How do I apply the transition to both sides of the edit? Is it even possible?
Thanks in advance for any and all advice.
    Alec

Tom, I figured it out. The audio for the video clip was overlapping the edit (i.e. it extended to the left, so that the video clip's audio ran under the still pic). When I got rid of the (easily replaced) audio, the regular cross-dissolve worked.
Now I just need to figure out how to make the transition last longer than 13 frames!
Thanks for your prompt responses ... I really appreciate it.
    Merry Christmas!

  • Cross Dissolve hiccups

I have used iMovie HD 6 for years and love it. (Newer versions without a timeline leave me cold.) My only problem is that I cannot seem to fix the occasional hiccup between cross-dissolved photos. These seem to happen randomly (about 1 out of 5 times) and involve no video/audio (although I am running audio below the photos). Anyone know of a fix? Thanks!

Unchecking the audio in the video track will cancel all sound, including that from your video clips. If there are only a few offending transitions, it might be easier to simply select all of those using Command-Click and then lowering their volume to zero (the little box with the speaker on the lower left, below the slider). If there are too many to deal with this way and/or there aren't that many video clips, I think the extract audio route might be the better option.

  • Non-functioning cross-dissolves with FCP 5.1 on intel

I am having trouble with FCP 5.1 running on my macbook. My cross dissolves work when used between two clips but as a fade to black, it doesn't work, or rarely does. I have 8 hours to finish this project to be showed at a wedding reception tomorrow. I've tried trashing the prefs and it did nothing, i emptied all my render files, checked for updates and nothing makes a difference. Please help, I'm runnng out of time.
    Patrick

    Thanks for trying...
Very strange...and not discounting your proficiency with FCP.
When you place the dissolve end on edit, the dissolve shows up on the end of the clip? but then the clip never dissolves to black?
Yes, the dissolve will show up on the end of the clip, but it plays back as if it is not there. This happens whether it is rendered or not. If I use a cross dissolve between two clips, it plays back perfectly. 'Some' of the clips will dissolve to black but the majority play back as though the transition is not there.
Any chance you're working with a 'favorite' dissolve that may have it's begin/end parameters adjusted?
Tried that and went back and got the original transition and made sure everything was set how it should be. I thought for sure it owuld be the prefs, but no such luck.
Any chance you've got your video layers scrolled downwards and there's a clip on a lower track?
No, I have made sure there is only one track with nothing underneath.
Are any of these clips nested?
    Nope.
    Thanks for trying though.

  • Premiere Pro CS 5.5 can't do a simple cross dissolve with MPE enabled?

When adding cross dissolves to a project that I'm working on, I've come across an odd problem. I say odd because this should be dirt simple, but Adobe seems to have messed this up. Please advise on any solution or work around, or perhaps simply see if you can recreate the issue so we can get Adobe to fix this.
    Problem:
Cross dissolves transitions don't seem to work consistently in cs 5.5. Note: I know how transitions work, and I'm not doing something stupid like trying to apply a transition to a cut without actually removing any video between the two clips (assuming the clips came from the same source video.). I'm able to recreate this issue on two different systems with premiere pro cs 5.5 by doing the follwing:
Create a new project and and sequence with the default settings.
Enable the Mercury Playback Engine if it isn't already enabled.
I import the Wildlife.wmv video that comes default with Windows 7 systems.
Drop it the video into the sequence.
Ripple delete about a 2 second section of the video. be sure to do this in the first half of the video, and make sure the the video changes the scene during this period so that you will notice the cross dissolve transition when it is applied.
Apply the default cross dissolve transition to the edit.
Review the edit. For my test, this edit always seems to work fine.
This is a screen capture of the working cross dissolve transition.
Now let me show you what happens when I do a similar edit somewhere in the second half of the video clip.
As you can see, for the duration of the transition, only the clip to the left is shown. At the end of the transition effect the program out preview jumps to displaying the clip to the right. There is no transition.
    Additional notes:
This second transition works fine with MPE disabled, but because if of my other problem http://forums.adobe.com/message/3725642 that I have with MPE disable it is not a viable work around.
    Help?
    -Ted

I too am experiencing this issue.  AVCHD footage, GPU Acceleration, trying to apply a cross dissolve, and instead it randomly seems to see it as a simple cut.  The Cross Dissolve is simply ignored... Adjusting the footage length, removing the CDissolve, re-rendering, etc. have no effect.  For whatever reason, in that specific location on the timeline, a cross dissolve with GPU acceleration is impossible.  Yet, in other sections of the timeline, it is just fine.
(The Fast Blur trick mentioned above worked (Thank you!) however, when I changed my playback resolution on the screen display, that broke the fix.  Deleting the fast blur, and applying it to the clip on the other side of the cross dissolve, re-enabled the work around)
I also see an issue when a clip changes in the timeline, (cut from one piece of footage, to another) the video will begin to studder, dropping frames.  Framerate seems to drop to about 2fps.  To get smooth playback back, I have to pause and resume the playback.  Even if this is done very very rapidly, it still fixes the playback issue.  it's just really annoying to have to constantly stop and resume playback everytime a video clip changes in the timeline.
I have a dedicated hard drive for video, and a dedicated mirrored array for the OS.  the video drive is a 7200rpm SATAII drive, and I'm using AVCHD footage.  I really don't think it's a disk speed issue... particularly as pausing and resuming (even if you do it as fast as you can possibly hit the keys) fixes it.  I'd rather not spend the $ to set up a RAID 10 for video, if I can avoid it and particularly if it's not needed.
