Audio only, no video, when importing .avi  -  VP60

I'm trying to make a machinima (Sims 3) and am new to "serious" video editing and Premiere (I have done little projects on Windows Movie Maker and stuff like that before). I'm using the trial version of CS5.5.
My problem is that whenever I try to import .avi clips, they import as audio only and no video. The files open fine in Windows Media Player. The weird thing is that this has only started happening in the middle of my project, after I've already successfully imported and worked with several files recorded in the same way  (and so I assume they were the same format).
After researching this issue as much as I've been able to, I downloaded the oft-recommended Gspot utility and took a look at some of the problem files. It says the codec is VP60, but that I already have it installed.
I haven't, to my knowledge, done any kind of converting or compressing of any of the videos before this happened. Another weird thing, though, is that files that imported correctly before are now only importing audio just like the newer ones.
I have tried converting these files to mp4's and other formats, which brings the video back into Premiere, but at a great loss of quality. I've also tried updating/reinstalling Quicktime and even a system restore, all without any luck.
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated, as I have a deadline FAST approaching!

This is a distribution format, not intended to be edited, because of the heavy compression. You have several options:
1. Try with consumer editor, like Magix, or WMM.
2. Convert to something editable and accept the quality loss.
3. Get the original, not compressed material from the copyright owner.

  • In Premiere Pro CS5.5 AVI file imports audio only - no video.

    I've got a file (one of 3) I've been given to create a smaller file (320x480) from.
    The file is an avi file and plays (video and audio) just fine in the native Windows media player. (I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit) There are no issues of memory or HDisc space.
    Video:
    The file is 2:21:29 in length.
    720x480
    Data rate 1489kbps
    Total bitrate 1617kbps
    29 frames/second
    Audio:
    Bit rate 128kbps
    Channels 2 (stereo)
    Audio sample rate 48 kHz
    The file is about 1.6Gb
    This is one of 3 I recieved. The other two were of comparable specs and similar length (not exactly but one was longer, the other shorter.)
    The problem is that this particular file (the other two import perfectly), when imported, only comes in as an audio file. No video imports. The other files import as audio and video. No error message either.
    I've imported all kinds of video files in the past with different frame sizes, rates, and aspect ratios, and codecs, yet I've never had one that only imports the audio without the video.
    Suggestions?!

  • Half of audio missing when importing .avi

    Hi, I am having some trouble with importing avi-files in Premiere Pro 5.5. I searched forum, read and did the troubleshooting guide at the wiki plus searched through the Adobe Premiere Pro Help without any result.
    Today I've been editing for 8 hours and everything worked fine. I imported some clips and used some of them. But then I messed up the bin-structure so I cleared the whole bin and started importing them again. I also deleted the sequence so no clips where in use.
    But now when I try to import the exact same file that worked before, The audio gets out of sync exactly half of the movies length. Like the audio starts in the middle of the clip while the movie starts from the beginning. So half way through the file it gets quiet because the audio ends there.
    I rebooted my laptop and restarted Premiere Pro. Now I've also reinstalled it. The files play fine in Media Player, VLC and Quicktime.
    Thankful for any kind of hints that could solve the problem
    Edit: now there is no sound at all - sometimes.. it kindof differs
    Edit2: now it started working again - although sometimes it works and sometimes it don't.. sooo annoying
    But if any one else gets this problem: restart restart restart restart, ;<

    Thank's a lot for the help and the reading! I got a lot more wiser about codecs and the details behind the file extension.
    I shot the video (and audio ) with a Nikon D300 DSLR.
    Here is the specs of the camera if needed.
    http://www.dpreview.com/news/2009/7/30/nikond300s#specs
    I ran the errored file through G-spot and this is the result. This is currently the only file that isn't working. Before, another file didn't work, but then it started working and now this file isn't working. At this point I imported all the other files into Premiere and they seem to work at the moment.
    Also, there is a red line above the video clips in the timeline even before adding any effects. The project is 25 fps and my videos are 24 fps. I didn't realize until now, hehe. Here is my sequence information.
    Properties
    6_Middagen
    1280 x 720
    00;11;20;05, 25,00 fps
    48000 Hz - Stereo
    Settings
    However I also tried importing and adding the same video clip on a Sequence with the settings
    Editing mode: DSLR
    Timebase: 24.00 fps
    Display format: 24 fps Timecode
    The rest of the settings are the same as in the picture above. This time I didn't get any colored render line. But the audio problem was still there.
    This is my project. You can see the waveform disappearing right after my timeline marker.
    I Googled "Nikon D300s h.264" and got a lot of results saying it does use it. I know my video files didn't work in CS4 before but the Nikon support said they would work fine in future updates of Adobe Premiere Pro. I am using Adobe Premiere CS5.5 though.
    The weird thing is that one file randomly stopped working. Then it started working again and now another file isn't working.

  • Audio only (no video) using MPEG-4

    I uploaded video footage in the 'organizer' section, but when I drag it to the timeline, I only get the audio. The screen is red. I am using a Sony T900 which seems to give me MPEG-4 formatted videos.
    Strange enough, in the 'organizer' section, I can see the video fine, but it's when I drag it to the timeline where the video disappears. Any ideas what's happening?

    Video from still cameras nearly always must be converted before you can use it in Premiere Elements. Although Premiere Elements can work with AVCHD footage, it can't handle all MP4s with equal ease.
    There are recommendations for converting this video into DV-AVIs in the FAQs to the right of the forum.

  • Odd frames added to start of audio export from LPX when imported into FCPX

    Running into a weird issue exporting audio out of Logic Pro (10.0.6) for import into FCPX (10.1.1) - Logic is introducing extra frames (varies between 2 to 4 frames) at the front of exported audio, becomes detectable when imported back into FCPX.
    I do a lot of work where I sync music performances on camera that are recorded in audio and MIDI, and have to deliver remixed audio with picture AND a .MID file that all sync. Workflow used to be shoot video on a C100 and another DSLR with either an audio feed or live mic patched to the camera, while Logic recorded the MIDI performance and any ambient audio via separate mics and pres. Shoot always had some kind of "slated" start marker on camera, in camera audio, and in Logic. Camera edits were edited in FCPX, exported as a Quicktime with the "slate" for a start marker, then audio and MIDI handled in Logic.
    This always used to work thru to last fall, when we took a hiatus.
    Upon resuming some final shooting in the last two weeks, our audio edits are always running 2-4 frames behind FCPX. It's a consistent offset for an entire export (so there's no drift, no jitter within the files - but the slate tones might be 2 frames and 17 subframes behind and the whole audio file runs behind.) Another export might be 3 frames 2 subframes behind. Always kind of random in the amount of drift - but never more than 4 frames.
    Tried a test where I imported just the camera audio in Logic as an extracted audio track, then exported same audio file back to the Quicktime but left the original audio in the video - Logic's exported audio ran behind sync from the original.
    Obviously, I'm paying attention to frame rates, sample rates, etc.
    As a test, I exported an XML out of FCPX, imported it into Logic, performed some edits, and used the File>Export>Project to FinalCut Pro XML - so everything matched across the board. Opened the export in FCPX - audio ran behind sync again.
    If it was just audio I was concerned about, I'd just line it up in FCPX and call it done - but my exported MIDI file NEEDS to be in sync with the picture AND the audio... and wasting time calculating the Logic offset error is a huge detour from getting this work done quickly.
    I thought maybe there could be a plug-in issue, but it happened even in the extracted audio from the Quicktime with no plug-ins in any of the signal chains.
    Any ideas?

    Well… here's a clunky workaround.
    It's either a problem with the exported FCPX-XML or the way Logic Pro X interprets the XML.
    The simple test here was to put a clip in the FCPX timeline and export it as an AIFF and then export an XML too.
    Import the XML into Logic, then import the AIFF as a new track. By default the Logic project is 120BPM. By analyzing the xml-based track and the aiff track, the xml track has an added 164 ticks to the beginning of the referenced video-audio.
    Move the playhead to zero, zoom in to the timeline and drag the tick field to 164 then blade all your tracks, then click/drag the bladed tracks to zero. Voila!
    It seems to only affect the first audio file. So for example, when I have 10 video clips in my FCPX timeline, only the first audio clip has the added 164 ticks.
    Now on to the next challenge…
    It's not enough to just de-compound your clips because L and J cuts get referenced to the VIDEO, not the audio underneath.
    So… In FCPX you MUST select each clip and choose Break Apart Clip Items from the Clip Menu. Perhaps this is old news but thought I'd mention it here in case others were having problems.
    Let's hope Apple steps up their xml game and realizes that when I choose export XML-Audio from the xml popup menu… I want it to send the duration of the audio, not the duration of the attached video.
    Ergh! Well… as my friends say… "We're still in the stone age with all this technology."
    Happy editing all!

  • Quicktime X Exporting Audio only - No Video

    Hello,
    Any MOV file I brought into Quicktime X I used to able to export to 720p, 1080p or 420p to
    a nicely encoded, universal H.264 Quicktime file.
    Now, when I try and export, it makes a small audio file and no video. The codec I'm encoding from is 'Animation'...should be easy..?
    Any ideas?
    thanks,
    Dan

    I'm having the same problem. Exporting as a 720 or a 480 from a 1080 only makes audio files. It used to work great under Snow Leopard.
    Even the Export for the Web/Broadband only ends up making audio-only .mov file
    I rolled back to my old copy of QuickTime 7 pro and was able to export a 720 and a 480, though you have to wade through a lot more codec options...

  • Audio component not apearing when importing AVCHD .MTS files

    When importing AVCHD .MTS files into Premiere Pro the Audio component is not available (also in After Effects and Media Encoder)
    What am I doing wrong :/

    You could most likely convert them using a program like 5DTORGB, and then pull them back into Premiere. Although there is a chance this won't work, however in most cases I find it usually does work. Just be prepared to lose your metadata.
    If your on a PC I'd recommend downloading their beta version it will allow you to transcode your AVCHD to ProRes HQ.
    http://rarevision.com/5dtorgb/
    All you have to is provide them a correct email address and they'll send you a download link. When you transcode though keep in mind that it's going to make your file sizes much much larger, however this because ProRes is much less compressed than AVCHD video is. You do need to keep in mind though that ProRes HQ is visually lossless. If you chose to use another free converter program you'll most likely get stuck chosing a lossy format. Another nice thing though, is that it works on MAC too. Your shooter needs to know not to do this again though, because as you already know at this point. It can cause big issues...

  • Audio but no Video when using MediaPlayer object

    I'm attempting to get a simple OSMF Player to play an FLV using the MediaPlayer object. Audio is played, but no video is shown.
    I've adapted the example code from the AS3 Reference docs for MediaPlayer. http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FlashPlatform/reference/actionscript/3/org/osmf/media/MediaPla yer.html (MediaPlayerExample.as) I've altered the code slightly to play an FLV in accordance with the Plugin developer documentation (OSMF_plugin_dev_guide.pdf - p.3 provides example player code where URLResource & MediaFactory are used together to load MediaPlayer with an FLV)
    package
        import flash.display.Sprite;
         import org.osmf.media.DefaultMediaFactory;
         import org.osmf.media.MediaFactory;
        import org.osmf.containers.MediaContainer;
        import org.osmf.elements.AudioElement;
        import org.osmf.events.TimeEvent;
        import org.osmf.media.MediaPlayer;
        import org.osmf.media.URLResource;
        public class MediaPlayerExample extends Sprite
            private var mediaPlayer:MediaPlayer;
            public function MediaPlayerExample()
                super();
                mediaPlayer = new MediaPlayer();
                var factory:MediaFactory = new DefaultMediaFactory;
                var resource:URLResource = new URLResource("http://mediapm.edgesuite.net/strobe/content/test/AFaerysTale_sylviaApostol_640_500_short.flv");
                mediaPlayer.volume = .5;
                mediaPlayer.loop = true;
                mediaPlayer.addEventListener(TimeEvent.CURRENT_TIME_CHANGE, onTimeUpdated);
                mediaPlayer.addEventListener(TimeEvent.DURATION_CHANGE, onTimeUpdated);
                mediaPlayer.autoPlay = true;
                mediaPlayer.media = factory.createMediaElement(resource);
            private function onTimeUpdated(event:TimeEvent):void
                trace('time: ' + mediaPlayer.currentTime + ' duration: ' + mediaPlayer.duration);
    This code compiles and runs, but no video is shown - only audio. Why won't this play video?
    Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

    For legacy reasons, we need to support MediaPlayer, so MediaPlayerSprite isn't an option. (even though simple replacement of MediaPlayer w/ MediaPlayerSprite does play the video in this example)
    Hmm. Passing a VideoElement doesn't seem to play audio or video:
    package
        import flash.display.Sprite;
         import org.osmf.elements.VideoElement;
         import org.osmf.media.DefaultMediaFactory;
         import org.osmf.media.MediaFactory;
        import org.osmf.containers.MediaContainer;
        import org.osmf.elements.AudioElement;
        import org.osmf.events.TimeEvent;
        import org.osmf.media.MediaPlayer;
        import org.osmf.media.URLResource;
        public class MediaPlayerExample extends Sprite
            private var mediaPlayer:MediaPlayer;
            public function MediaPlayerExample()
                super();
                mediaPlayer = new MediaPlayer();
                var factory:MediaFactory = new DefaultMediaFactory;
                var resource:URLResource = new URLResource("http://mediapm.edgesuite.net/strobe/content/test/AFaerysTale_sylviaApostol_640_500_short.f lv");
                   var vid:VideoElement = new VideoElement();
                   vid.resource = new URLResource("http://mediapm.edgesuite.net/strobe/content/test/AFaerysTale_sylviaApostol_640_500_short.f lv");
                mediaPlayer.volume = .5;
                mediaPlayer.loop = true;
                mediaPlayer.addEventListener(TimeEvent.CURRENT_TIME_CHANGE, onTimeUpdated);
                mediaPlayer.addEventListener(TimeEvent.DURATION_CHANGE, onTimeUpdated);
                mediaPlayer.autoPlay = true;
                //mediaPlayer.media = factory.createMediaElement(resource);
                   mediaPlayer.media = vid;
            private function onTimeUpdated(event:TimeEvent):void
                trace('time: ' + mediaPlayer.currentTime + ' duration: ' + mediaPlayer.duration);

  • I get audio but no video when trying to AirPlay from iPad to apple t.v.

    I tried to play from CCTV app to Apple TV I only get audio when I it the airplay button it tells me to double click home button and swipe left select mirror button but that is not there. When I try to play normal movie already on my iPad it works no prob.

    Yes, but if the icon is there, then it's been enabled, right?  So if you're getting audio and not video, it's enabled, but not working properly.  I have enabled apps, and they barely even get chunks of audio.  Useless...

  • How do I capture audio only, no video?

    I'm trying to capture an audio cassette, patched RCA/XLR to a Kona Card, to a G5 tower running FCP6. Since I want to capture audio only, I unchecked the video box in the clip settings tab of the LogCapture window. But when I capture now, I get a message saying "This operation could not be completed as there is no video".
    How can I capture audio only? Can't turn off the video in Kona ctrl panel, must be in FCP.
    Thanks in advance for the help.

    Yes, as I mentioned, I did uncheck that video box, after which I got the message 'operation could not be completed as there is no video' (& capture failed). My capture setting is to Kona, but I've also tried Generic, but no luck.
    This then led to my first crash course in SoundtrackPro, which is now recording the audio I needed. But I would love to figure out why FCP is not letting me capture audio w/o video, so any further suggestions are appreciated.

  • Can't get Audio to play through when importing using iMovie '09

    Anyone know how to get audio to work when importing DV footage into iMovie '09.
    It used to work fine in iMovie HD. Any ideas??
    Yours sincerely,

    Irish MacUser & MacAddict

    I've just spent a while trying to figure this out ...
    I used this feature (monitoring audio on import) all the time in previous versions of iMovie ...
    Kind of essential I think ...
    Now we have a new 'feature' in iMovie where you can't monitor audio during import.
    Wouldn't it be nice if Apple documented this somewhere (maybe on iMovie Help ...).
    I understand about hi-speed import from other (non DV) formats ...
    So why not just let the user hit the 'mute' button if they don't want to listen to audio on import ?
    Pretty simple - rather than having this somewhat arbitrary rule imposed on iMovie users ?
    The only way to monitor audio during import is to plug headphones into the camera itself.
    Which means we are wearing a thing with a wire attached - making the BT headset capability of the Mac somewhat redundant.
    Oh well ... one step forward, one step back.

  • Audio not in synch when importing from passthrough

    I am trying to transfer some old home movies from VHS to DVD. I am using the passthrough on my Sony TRV-120 to connect the VCR to my Mac.
    For some reason the audio is not synchronized with the video after import, however, when watching from the VHS tape it is fine.
    Any help is appreciated.
    My specs are as follows:
    MacPro Quad Core 2.8 Ghz
    FinalCut Pro Studio 2
    OSX 10.5.4

    I see this question on forums all the time and I see bonehead crap telling people to buy new hardware or software or other trivia. There are real-time, easily implemented things you can do that will fix the problem, immediately and without fail
    1. Convert small as small a chunk as you can at a time. If its a concert, do it one song at a time. If a tv show, go commercial to commercial. The shorter the chunk, the less frames dropped and the less lag time and potential for getting really out of synch.
    2. This is the most important factor: frame rate. The most likely reason you are getting out of synch is that your computer is not fast enough to keep up with the frame rate. Most set the rate at 30fps. Try tweaking it down to 20, then watch how many frames you drop as it's converting: most decent conversion software has a read-out telling you. I use Blaze Media Pro myself. If you are getting almost no dropped frames, you can probably bump it up some, if still too many, knock it down a little. There is very little noticeable difference in 15 to 30 fps, in fact, if you plan on uploading it to YouTube or otherwise converting it, the framerate is going to be sharply reduced anyway.
    This is an almost foolproof way to avoid video/audio synching problems when converting from VHS. I took the time to post this because I was tired of seeing all the useless advice posted on this subject.
    Video editing and conversion takes a lot of CPU power. If you really intend on getting into it in a big way, you'll need a strong CPU capable of handling the load. Other than that, framerate is probably your best bet in making do with what you have.

  • Audio Only, No Video on QT Pro 7 w MPEG-2 Component.

    Hello,
    I am having a problem which is described by many others. I have several videos (from my digital TV tuner card) which are MPEG2 video encoded with MPEG1 audio encoding. I've got QT Pro (7.1.5) as well as the MPEG2 playback component. However, when I open MPEG-2 muxed files all I get is audio and a white screen. The files play back perfectly in Windows Media Player.
    I'm also curious if this is a install issue with the MPEG2 playback component? When I downloaded the MPEG2 component install file form Apple store and then ran it, the installation screen said "For Quicktime 6". How do I know if the component has been successfully installed?
    And I have also tried opening them in Stream Clip but have the same audio-only problem. I've also tried viewing the files in QT's safe mode.
    Any help would me much appreciated.

    As you have discovered, QT does not support the export of sound from muxed mpeg files. Fortunately, this freeware will export to several formats. It also allows you to do some editing of mpegs without re-encoding if that is desired: Mpeg StreamClip
