Audio out: 5.1? AC3? DTS?

Does any one know if the new MacMini (Intel) digital audio out port sends the ac3 or dts 5.1 streams, or is it stereo only? If the former, this would make an interesting "DVD" player.
Ed

DVI out just makes things sharper (in theory) by addressing each pixel in digital mode; analog (RGB, VGA, whatever) all have sync signals which go with the video to time it all. The display device may get slightly off even due to such things as cable length, connection resistance, etc.
My experience with DVI and Apple (and PC) out is limited to the Apple Ciinema 23" and 30:" displays. The internal software scales the 740x480 DVD pixels (854x480 in anamorphic wide screen) to ones screen size by interpolation, etc. At least with those combinations, I've seen jaggies, interlace scan lines during some kinds of movement, etc.
There are a variety of external scalers; the Faroudja one I mention is a high end piece of gear (no longer in production, see the Faroudja web site), but when new, it cost about $20,000. Check out DVDO for less pricey options; there are others as well depending on your budget and criticality. The Faroudja products are pretty much no compromise units and do a lot of processing to obtain a film like look to projected video.
Good luck and have fun with your new Mini!

I have 8460p and i am trying to get multichannel audio out of the displayport. I have DP to HDMI cable which works fine for getting picture. Also i get audio but its only 2 channels. Also in the playback devices section when i check the supported formats it only shows 2 channel stereo.
Would like to connect laptop to tv and tv via optical to receiver and get AC3 or DTS when watching movies.
I have 64bit Win7 and latest drivers from hp site.
As a temporary solution i am currently using Lindy usb audio adapter with optical out which is working for AC3/DTS.
    Thanks

The bug is known, and a patch has been submitted: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=80151. There's been no update since friday, so I wonder what the current status is, or if it's up for review at all.
Does anyone know how we can be notified when this patch hits the kernel?

  • AC3/DTS audio on non-AC3/DTS system...

    Hello.
I'm running ATV OS 3.0.1 and recently I've been ripping my DVD/BR collection into iTunes. When I rip my DVD/BR discs, I include AC3/DTS audio. Right now I don't have a AC3/DTS speaker system, but since I plan to in the future, I figured it would be best to rip that way. I'm just using the analog stereo cables (right/left) from the ATV to my TV and assume there's some downconverting built into the ATV to handle this?
Anyway, the problem I'm having is that the voices when people speak are usually really hard to hear, while the rest of the sound (music, FX, etc.) is way loud. So, we end up cranking the volume when we can't hear people talking, then the next scene is some action scene and the volume is crazy loud.
Does anyone know what might be wrong/a possible solution?
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    k.

Sorry, let me clarify, for the sake of these boards. These are home movies I'm ripping, not commercial. Since I assume I'm dealing with AAC stereo (since I'm getting sound and I don't have a system capable of AC-3) we can ignore DTS and maybe WC will go away.
i'm sure you will want sir winston on board, as he is very knowledgeable when it comes to TV matters
So — back to the issue, which I'll now consider a stereo issue. I'm using handbrake to rip my home movies, using one of the ATV presets. When I'm speaking in my home movies, my voice is low in the mix (it's not this way when I watch my home movie from the DVD I burned myself at home).
Any idea's why this would be?
i have similar experiences when playing movies through my TV alone (via HDMI). however, once audio goes via optical to my surround receiver, the output is just as it's supposed to be.
my guess is is you won't know until you get that speaker system. AFAIK, the TV is able to pass whatever audio it is receiving through via optical.
please correct me if i'm wrong !

  • Toslink/AC3 Optical Audio Out Docking Station???

Is there such a thing that docks iPod at the base and send digital audio signal to a receiver/preamp? I realize you can do this using RCA cable but D/A conversion is done in iPod rather than in home hi-fi.
I searched a bit in this forum and came to understand that iPod does not support digital audio out, but Airport and iPod Hi-Fi does. Not looking to include computer/router in the loop.
It would be nice if this dock had a S-Video or Component video out as well but maybe this is too much like iTV....
    Thanks in advance.

I love to see it too, but it seems that Apple is not going to add this digital audio signal output for iPod, as this music industry is worried that adding the digital option on a MP3 device may creates more illegal copy

  • No audio out preference in utilites

here is my post in the macbook pro forum

well much to my surprise, after i updated to leopard 10.5.4 I now have no control over my output sound. i also have quicktime 7.5. I don't know exactly when this started..since i have reinstalled leopard.
i use my mbp for home theatre purposes..and used to have to switch my audio out when watching dolby digital movies. now i dont have the option at all...completely grayed out in my midi audio settings.
how do i get it back? I think i will have to downgrade to 10.5.2 ( i never had this problem before)
i have sound but i do not have the option of changing any of the properties ie-bit rate or frequency. the audio out portion where this info should be located is greyed out.

Well, there are two things you need to do. For selecting digital out for DVD's and such via DVD Player, you'll need to open that. Go to Preferences and in the Audio area, as opposed to having System Sound Output (make sure your optical out is plugged in of course), select Digital Out. One annoying part, is you'll have to make this change before you watch the movie - just make sure DVD Player is stopped.
Also, when you plug in your TosLink cable, your system sound will be overridden by the sound from the receiver you plug into. To make adjustments, this is a utility. Simply to go Utilities and then "Audio Midi Setup". Really, when you plug in, your laptop system sound is automatically defaulted to be controlled by a receiver in which its plugged into.
Now, anything that is not encoded in AC3 will be outputted in PCM 2CH on a receiver. DVD player will play both Dolby Digital and DTS streams.
In case you are looking for an equalizer for audio purposes, I'm looking for the same and havn't found anything just yet.
    Good luck.

  • Pass the AC3/DTS signal to a external deco

    Hi there
    Small problem I have
I'm trying to Pass the AC3/DTS signal to an external decoder (my pioneer receiver)
In my DVD software I have selected SPDIF as audio output, however in the creative audio console, when I select SPDIF I/O tab, SPDIF input settings is greyed out. I'm just trying to select SPDIF Pass-through for my Xi Fi Extreme Music sound card to let the pioneer do the decoding.
I have all necessary connections running for digital audio.
    Thanks

The SPDIF tab would be grayed out. I beli've?the spdif tab is options?for?front I/O?bay that comes with the?platinum and fatality.

  • Solution - AC3 DTS D3D EAX Full positional sound to Home Theatre Recei

    Regards,
    Marco Polo

    People just don't GET audio.
A PC is not like a DVD player. One of the main reasons for AC3 and DTS is that the media on which motion pictures are typically stored (ie. the DVD) does not have enough storage capacity to hold a feature-length's worth of multi-channel audio.
The reasons why the actual AC3/DTS stream is sent over a physical cable to the receiver are many:
) Content providers don't like the idea of uncompressed and unencrypted audio transmitting over cables which can easily be intercepted and copied bit-for-bit.
    2) Since not everyone has surround sound speakers, it doesn't make sense to add cost to the DVD player by having AC3 and DTS decoders on board.
The major difference between DVD's and games in terms of audio is that for DVD's the sound is already pre-recorded and only needs to be played back. For games, the sound mix is created interacti'vely. The fact that the sound in games is created interacti'vely makes a technology such as AC3/DTS irrelevant because ) it doesn't need to be stored which means there are no constraints leading to the need for compression, and 2) there is no issue with content protection because the interacti've sound mix coming from a game does not in and of itself represent someone's intellectual property (like a music recording or movie soundtrack).
The fact that AC3/DTS is digital is incidental. "Digital" is not magic, its just a convenient storage format. ALL sound ultimately must be converted to an analog signal to be played on speakers. On PC's which haven't been typically connected to home theater receivers, there is no point to doing this digital-analog conversion anywhere but the soundcard itself. Thus, digital speakers for PC's, when used exclusi'vely with a PC, are mere gimmicks.
Now, you may understand all this yet still argue that the ability to output AC3/DTS from a PC serves a purpose. This way, a PC can be used as a home theater server that is ALSO capable of playing games, with ALL sound (games included) encoded in the AC3/DTS format. It may be convenient if your receiver does not have the multi-channel analog inputs necessary to get surround in PC games, especially if you have unused optical/coax inputs on your receiver. For this situation, Creative has developed the DTS-60 external decoder device. Yes, it is another $00 bucks, but think of it this way: the real-time AC3 cards generally cost around $00, but they have none of the other 3D audio hardware acceleration offered by the X-Fi. The X-Fi (cheap version) costs around $00 bucks but doesn't included the encoding stuff. AC3 or DTS encoding is NOT free. If you feel that you don't need the hardware acceleration of interacti've 3D audio offered by the X-Fi, go ahead and buy a HDA-Mystique. If you want the best, get an X-Fi and the DTS-60 (when it comes out).
I'd imagine that in the future, Creative will come out with a soundcard that features integrated DTS Interacti've encoding.

  • Large .dv file plays fine in Quicktime, but audio out of sync in iMovie??

    hi,
i'm trying to convert some old analog 8mm tapes to digital. to do this, i'm using a sony trv320 camcorder with firewire feeding iMovie '08. i've imported an entire 2 hour tape into iMovie, and everything is fine except that at some point, the audio gets out of sync from the picture. i've opened the huge 24 GB .dv file in Quicktime, and everything is in sync, so I assume this is some kind of problem related to iMovie. i've done lots of searching on this and have made sure that the camcorder is sending 16 bit audio out. i also tried using mpeg streamclip to split the huge .dv file into smaller parts, but this resulted in the same audio sync problem (which is weird).
is my only option to manually import my tapes 10 minutes at a time? please say no
the most puzzling thing about this is that the huge .dv file is perfectly in sync all the way through when playing back in Quicktime.
i'm at a loss!! hope someone can help.

I've edited in FCP and exported with compressor with all the appropriate settings, to mpeg 2.
Double check to make sure that you edited in Anamorphic and also encoded as 16:9 video not 4:3 - also make sure you set the Track to 16:9 Letterbox in DVD SP.
What encoding rates did you use for the video and audio? Sometimes if the rates are too high it can cause drifts.
On the audio side, did you export the FCP as self contained and make the audio AC3? Also you can try just exporting the audio as an AIF and encode that as an AC3.
How did you burn the DVD (Speed and Media used?) Sometimes bad burns/media can cause issues.

  • DVD Digital Audio Out

I'm new to the Mac world, and I was wondering does DVD player in Mac OSX do digital audio out? I'm currently using a Dell XPS. I watch all my movies on it and it's connected to a surround system. When I play movies it sends the Dolby Digital signal straight to the Amp where it detects the digital signal and decodes it. Will this work the same way in OSX as long as I use the optical out on the Mac Pro?
    Thanks.

The Apple DVD Player Software may need configuration in order to enable Dolby Digital 2 and DTS Passthrough. Otherwise you will only have 2-channel Stereo LPCM. While most Amps will be able to use Dolby Pro-Logic 2 to emulate Surround Sound, Dolby Digital 2 and DTS support 5.1 Surround Sound.
With your Amp connected to your Mac with an Optical Audio Cable, and no DVD in the drive, start up DVD Player.app.
In the "Disc Setup" Tab of DVD Player Preferences, select "Digital Out - Built In Output" from the "Audio Output" option.
You may have to reset this every time you connect or disconnect the Optical Cable, but the Improved Audio is worth it.

  • SB0460 AC3/DTS decoder not working on Windows 7 (Driver 2.18.0015)

    Hello everybody!
I hope somebody will be able to help me with my strange problem:
I just did the move from Windows XP (x64) to Windows 7 (x64) and discovered that the X-FI's AC3/DTS decoder is not working. All I get is either noise/static/crackling (AC3) or no sound at all (DTS). I have an X-FI XtremeMusic card (Serial: MSB0460535000206P) and the decoder is working absolutely fine on Win XP.
The latest driver version 2.8.005 is installed. I have also tried the first driver (2.8.003) that was supposed to have fixed the decoder under Windows 7. The changelog there says: Dolby? Digital and DTS? decode re-established for sound cards that included decoding in their Windows XP drivers. No such luck for me.
My sound card is definitely supported so I'm wondering why it's not working.
Use Built-in Decoder is selected in the Audio Control Panel I'm passing audio to S/PDIF (from e.g. PowerDVD or MPC-HC). On Win XP usually the on screen display pops up when the decoder detects the signal, nothing on Win 7.
(Note that I am NOT trying to input a signal from an external source.)
Gi'ven everything I have tried, logic tells me that there may still be a bug lurking in the decode driver.
    Any ideas?

FI think you have to pay now for the decoder when using digital output but not sure what soundcards are limited.... otherwise try this drivers and see this help but i dont know if they will work...

  • Audio out of sync from demuxed program stream

    Hi All,
I've been trying to resolve this problem without any success. I recently ripped some video from a dvd in order to make a backup. I extracted the title I wanted as a muxed program stream. I then used MPEGStreamclip to demux into .m2v and .ac3 files. I imported these into DVDSP and burned the disc. The result is that the audio drifts out of sync over the course of the length of the video (about 1.5 hours). I've done this same exact procedure many many times and haven't had this problem before. In fact the video will play back in perfect sync in both MPEGStreamclip and VLC. I did notice when importing the files into DVDSP that the length of the ac3 file shows a difference of almost 4 seconds (shorter) than the video. So obviously this is the problem. I just can't understand why if the video plays back perfectly its not being extracted properly by MPEGStreamclip. I also tried demuxing with BBDemux, which produced the same result. I then tried with the demux tools in ffmpeg and that process started creating numerous different versioned files of the original file and actually ended up running out of disc space.
Has anyone run into this problem before and found a solution?
    Thanks,
    Chris

Ok, I understand what you're doing now. But you're losing some quality by going to 422 and then back to m2v again, not to mention the extra time required for the encoding.
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hi Chris,
I have used this method frequently when issues arise,
I use the original "Video TS" from the DVD, open,
Then open Streamclip, select the VOBs in the TS that don't end in a zero,
and drop them into the streamclip window, singly if needed, then convert
to (I prefer) pro res 422 SQ, I like the results better than DV.
assemble if needed in FCP, match sequence settings to clip, and
verify audio and video are in sync, then use compressor to create
    your m2v and ac3.
Depending on how the original DVD was authored, menus, tracks etc.
the ".0" VOBs will frequently contain a 1 sec. black slug, this can
throw the audio out of sync when the video is extracted.
if there is a motion menu this will become a video clip, usually
in VOB "1.0", you probably don't want that.
Hope this is a clearer explanation.

  • Optical digital and analog audio out

I just purchased a Pavilion 500-214 with IDT High Def Audio CODEC / DTS Sound+
Is it possible to get both opitcal digital audio out and analog (speakers/headphones) out at same time?  Stereo amp needs access to both for multizone/source function.  I can manually pick one or the other before playback - it is clunky in that when switching audio out devices the active will turn off but one switching to does not always turn on.  But i really need  both simultaneously active for amp to work properly.  I have also found rear speaker jack to be more stubborn during switching than front headphone jack.

  • PrE11: Audio Out of Sync

I seem to be having some weird Out of Sync issues that may be unique - at least I haven't found an answer yet - and I'm hoping someone can help.
    First up: system:  Core2Duo @ 2.94Ghz, 4GB RAM, Windows 7 x64
    Adobe Premiere Elements 11
    What I am doing:
    - Recording TV shows via Windows Media Center
    - Using MCE Buddy to transcode .wtv files to (... - see below)
    - Loading file into PrE
What I am trying to do:
    - Use PrE11 to cut commercials and scenes my daughter doesn't like, then save show for playing on PS3
The files I had been using previously in Sony Vegas without issue (MCE Buddy profile WTV->MP4 High) are REALLY bad when imported into PrE.  They start out fine, but within a few seconds it's badly out of sync and just gets worse.
I also tried (WTV->M4V), and that is just as bad as MP4.
So, I tried going to (WTV->TS Unprocessed) - essentially untouched audio/video streams, just remuxed into a .ts file.  One problem here is that apparently PrE isn't happy with AC3 audio - at least for me.  So I demux the audio out, a quick conversion to WAV, and then I import that along with the video.  Here's where it gets really weird.  The first 3 minutes get REALLY bad OOS - like a few seconds off.  But then it gradually goes back to roughly in sync, and then bounces in and out of sync for the rest of the video - though not as bad as the first OOS.
I've tried just about all of the Preset project settings, and I do not notice any difference between them - the out of sync is exactly the same no matter which project setting I select.
On all of these files, playing in an external player (VLC or WMP), everything is synced up perfectly.  Sony Vegas even handled the files fine with never an out of sync issue.  The reason I'm giving PrE a shot is because Vegas's rendered output has been somewhat poor - and getting worse as I give it more complex videos (if you call The Cat in the Hat cartoon a complex video).
Since the .TS file is the "best" of what I've tried, here is the Mediainfo output on this file:
    MPEG-TS: 3.15GiB, 34mn 55s
    1 video stream: MPEG Video
    2 audio streams: AC-3 / AC-3
    2 text streams: EIA-608 / EIA-708
    Overall bit rate: 12.9 Mbps
    First Video Stream:
    11.7 Mbps, 1920*1080 (16:9), at 29.970fps, MPEG Video (Version 2) (Main@High) (CustomMatrix/BVOP)
Any help would be greatly appreciated, and if I can provide any additional info, please let me know.

    Hi Bill:
I had seen that post in my searches for an answer, however my OOS is not static.
In the case of MP4 and M4V files, the OOS difference grows over time.  In the case of TS files, it stays somewhat close, but varies (getting better and worse) over time.
This doesn't really seem to be an issue with the capture card, only with Premiere Elements, as other media players (VLC, WMP, Sony PS3) and editors (Sony Vegas, VideoReDo, a few other freeware) handle the same videos just fine, with no adjustments necessary.  If PrE can't handle importing videos, then maybe PrE just isn't for me.  :-(
And doing J-/L-cuts just is not a valid solution to this.  If the audio and video get noticably out of sync every 2-3 seconds, in a 25 minute clip, having the audio and/or video stutter every 2-3 seconds for an adjustment is going to make it horribly unwatchable.  Not to mention the fact it will take days to do the 1200 or so adjustments on that one clip.
