Audio out plug mis-match?

When I plug an 1/8-inch stereo mini plug from my home stereo (RCA to mini-plug) into either my MacBook Pro or an iPhone, I only get one audio channel (right). I've tried different mini plugs with the same results. Is there some special trick or adapter?

What you have here is
A (source) → B (interconnect) → C (target).
You tried two different As, same issue. It is possible that both As have exactly the same defect, but unlikely.
You tried several different Bs. It is possible that all have the same defect, but unlikely. (Note: This is only valid if you did, indeed, use completely different interconnects -- if, say, you used the same plug adaptor, the logic is invalid.)
So what's left? Sorry to say… it's C (your home stereo…)

  • Why doesn't time capsule come with AirPlay and an audio out plug? I have to buy an Airport Express station and put it right on top of my time capsule to wire it to my stereo. Doesn't make sense...

My Time Capsule is right by my stereo and would like to stream my itunes there. But it looks like I would have to add an Airport express station right on top of my time capsule to do this. Which doesn't make sense to have 2 wireless routers on top of each other. Is that the only way?

Well you can't do it with a Time Capsule.
You could get an Apple TV instead of an Air Port Express and then you can get video as well..

  • Can I use my MacBook's Audio-In plug for headphones?

I am going on a trip and would like to watch movies with my friend on the way, and I was wondering if we could use both the audio-in & audio-out plugs for headphones?

No, what you need to do is get a y-splitter like this one:

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

  • Help with audio out when plugging into 3.5" jack on a MacBook's combo input

With my old iMac, I used to plug my guitar into the 3.5" microphone jack* and either used the computer's speakers or plug headphones into the separate headphone port for audio out.
Now I have MacBook Air with a headphone/mic combo port. I checked the sound settings in System Preferences and couldn't select speakers for external audio. Is there a way to assign audio-out to the speakers and keep audio-in assigned to the mic/headphone port? Or am I going to need to buy some dongle or adapter now?
*How did I connect a guitar to the 3.5" port? I used a generic computer speaker wire (3.5" on each side) and plugged a 3.5" to 1" adapter (the kind you use for stereo headphones) into the guitar.

    Hi Tim -
Please bear with me because I am no Apple expert. However, I do remember reading something that might help you out.
You wrote that you store your sound libraries are installed on an external drive. Someone, who posted either here or on another Logic bulletin board, basically stated that problems may occur if an external hard disk drive that carries the sound libraries is FAT32 or NTFS formatted (formatted for a Windows-based computer). Apparently, an external hard disk drive utilized for sound libraries should be formatted as *Mac OS Extended* (not journaled). (I hope that someone more expert on this subject will either validate this claim or suggest another option.)
Try doing a Search in this forum for more information on this subject. But I think how that external drive is formatted might make a difference on performance for the Mac computer.
I come from the PC world as well. I like both the Apple and PC systems. But I really like working with the Logic program.
    Good luck to you
    Ted

  • Audio & video don't match on burned blu-ray

Thanks to everyone on this forum, I was able to solve the blue screen of death issue!
Now a new problem:  I successfully burned a blue ray.  The menus work well and the picture is great, but the audio is about 20 seconds ahead of the video on all tracks.  This problem only occurs on the finished blu-ray disc.  In preview, the audio and video match perfectly.

Well, I am at the limit of being able to help, since I only write to DVD
But, if your video is showing as being untranscoded, I would agree that "something" is going wrong while transcoding
If you click on the 622722 link I provided, you "should" be able to figure out how to export out of Premiere Pro to create a file that Encore does not need to transcode
Otherwise, you'll have to wait for someone who uses assets like yours to create a BluRay to come along and, hopefully, point out what you need to change
These may not help, but they are a couple of links I saved about audio/video sync problems

  • Question on optical audio out

Hi all, I recently got an entry level 5.1 surround system for my PC (Logitech X-530, if you're that curious) and am wondering if it's possible to utilize my optical audio out with this system. From what I gather, I'd need some kind of decoder, but beyond that, I'm lost. I've tried googling it and searched around this forum a bit, but I can't seem to be pointed to any one product that'll do this. Any help is appreciated.

Ok, the speakers you got are just powered speakers with analog inputs.
They do not have the better digital inputs and do 5.1 decoding.
Mac's don't do 5.1 decoding, so you need either a separate device (like a 5.1-7.1 decoding receiver with digital optical inputs) or a M-Audio sound card installed in your PCI slots.
The M-Audio card for the Mac will use your CPU's to do the 5.1 decoding and send it out analog ports which you can connect those speakers too.
The M-Audio card produces line level output, no amplification. But your powered speaks will do the amplification.
    http://images.devshed.com/dh/stories/Logitech%20x530/image005.jpg
(The three plugs on the right are for connecting to a sound card)
If your really into better sound, a quality 5.1-7.1 receiver with digital optical inputs (toslink cable) and good speakers with 80+ watts each and a decent 100+ watt subwoofer will make you cry with happiness. Of course you need to pay over $1000 and up. But it's worth it if your into music.
Check out the Volume Logic iTunes plugin, it's cheap and makes your music sound so much better.
NOTE! Make sure you check that the current M-Audio card will work in your Mac. The PCI spec of the M-Audio card may not match the one's needed by your certain spec of PowerMac G5.

  • Why doesn't the Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock relay sound from it's audio out port?

Posted to Belkin Support community to no avail

Why can't my Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock operate my desktop speakers?
    Options
    07-14-2014 01:48 PM
Bought a Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock at the Apple Store to use with my new MacBook Pro.
When I connected it to my
    -20" Mac Cinema display,
-Various USB connected hubs and devices,
    -Various Firewire hubs and devices
-My ethernet network from my Cable Modem
Then made the last connection from the Dock to the Thunderbolt port on the MacBook Pro...
    All was fine.
But when I made that one last connection - to my desktop speakers via the audio-out port on the dock (earphones icon) nothing happened.  The dock did not pick up the audio from the laptop playng an iTunes song or send it to the desktop speakers.  When I unplugged the audio cable from the Dock and plugged it in to the MacBook Pro directly, the desktop speakers kicked right in again.
Does Thunderbolt pick up audio-out from a MacBook Pro and carry it to the Dock for connection to my desktop speakers?
Of for some reason, can that signal not be carried by Thunderbolt?
Will I have to get used to the onerous task of unplugging 2 cables from my MacBook Pro when I want to more it to another location in stead of just 1 cable?
But stay with me.  Here's the thing.
When this happened I called Belkin Customer Support to ask if they could help me.  After taking me through their steps, they agreed that the unit must be defective and agreed to ship me a replacement Thunderbolt Express Dock.
The replacement arrived over the weekend and when I shut down my system and then plugged everything from Dock I purchased into the replacement Thunderbird Express Dock - - - - - the same thing happened!
No signal to the speakers from the dock.  Perfect signal when the plug moved from the Dock to the computer itself.
    Hence my question:
Does Thunderbolt pick up audio-out from a MacBook Pro and carry it to the Dock for connection to my desktop speakers?
    Can it accomplish that function?
Am I really that unlucky to have received 2 defective new Belkin Thunderbolt Express Docks in a row?
Or is it simply a matter of the Dock not handling audio throughput in the manner I am expecting.
Then again, if this is the case, why did the Belkin techies not know this when I called them in the first place.
Yes, I'm going on and on here.  But I really don't have time for this.
    What's going on here?

OK.  No reason to be playing games here.  Just surprised that this issue hasn't been brought up here on the community boards as well.  Here's the simple solution

After reaching a Level III technician in Belkin customer support today and having spent approximately 4-5 person hours on this issue, we figured out that the Sound/Output preferences in the Apple System Preferences should not be set to "Internal Speakers"  but rather set to "USB PnP Sound Device".
Worked like a charm.  Simple, elegant solution to a real problem, one likely to be encountered by 90% of the people who buy a Belkin Thunderbid Express Dock off the shelves of any Apple Store to use with a current generation Apple laptop or desktop computer.
But the Level III Belkin technician admmtted that this critical little piece of simple, straightforward information should have been readily available to their Level 1 techies who began helping me 5 person hours ago.  Would even have saved Balkin loads of customer service support time.
    And so the saga ends
Belkin owes me for helping them learn this precious lesson.

  • Static in Audio Out when Loading a new webpage.

Whenever I use the audio out port, for example plugging in a headphone, I would get a spike of static whenever I load a new web-page in Firefox or any internet browser. I can restart the computer and it would go away for like a few hours. Could the network card be causing a charge in the audio out port? Really weird and annoying bug.

in as3 you must explicitly stop all streams (including video) before unloading.

  • 10.6.8 - No audio out (but internal speaker fine) - MBP5,5

After upgrading to 10.6.8, plugging in my earphones or headphones does squat. My internal speaker still works fine though
I've tried the AppleHDA rollback (to 10.6.7 version) to no avail  - each time either audio disables totally or I get the "Incorrectly installed extension" error
The most interesting thing is my problem seems subtlely different from the 'popular' audio problems. Most bizarrely, audio out works until I log in (works on the login screen). It dies and I receive asserts on the console after logging in though (I'm not on the machine and I can't remember the exact assert message but something about failure during GOTO in some audio handler)
I haven't tried making another user account (to see if it's account specific) but I have tried deleting all manner of user-specific audio plists as well as doing SMC reset, permissions repair etc.
Any ideas? + Anyone have the same problem? (I'm presuming this is specific to this MBP + config)

one thing i have just tested i can copy files from my mac desktop to my macbook fine mmm!

  • What kind of audio interface do I need for audio out from MainStage 3?

I have a Yamaha MO8 that I use for playing in the worship band at my church. In the past, I've just directly routed audio from the MO8 through a direct box and into the sound system.
I'm looking to switch my setup and use the Yamaha MO8 as a midi controller in MainStage 3. I have this part working — the problem is getting the audio from my MacBook Pro.
The audio output sounds fine through the MacBook Pro speakers or through headphones plugged into the audio out / headphone jack; however, if I plug the direct box into the MacBook Pro's audio out / headphone jack, the signal the sound system gets is very pretty weak and very distorted.
I'm assuming I need an audio interface between my MacBook Pro and the direct box / sound system. Since it's a 2010 MacBook Pro, I'm assuming my only output option is USB (unless the digital audio out can be used). If that's correct, would something like the Scarlet 2i2 work for me?
    Thanks…

Yes, you'll need some sort of audio interface to get a good signal back to your mixer.
The Scarlet 2i2 would work for you but you may find a few limitations.  I use a MOTU Audio Express and it has the advantage of being a mixer as well, so I can mix in a backup signal from the onboard audio outs of my controller (Kurzweil PC3x) in case MainStage goes down (it happens on rare occasion).  Firewire is my preference so the MOTU checks that box.  I also like that I can connect my MIDI cables to the MOTU and have one cable going into the computer.
If you need this sort of compact redundancy, I would shoot a little higher than the Scarlet.  If you don't feel the need for a backup line and USB works for you, then the Scarlet unit would be an excellent value.

  • Trouble running DVI video and HDMI audio out of 6950

    Twin frozr iii 6950 2gb (X2 crossfire)
    Asus VG236 Monitor
    Windows 7
    MSI P67A-G43 Motherboard
    Yamaha RX-V371 Receiver
I have two Twin Frozr iii 2gb 6950 cards and am attempting to use the HDMI on the video card solely for 5.1 audio out to my receiver while using video through the DVI jack of the same card directly to my monitor without success.
-Audio functions if I run the HDMI from the card into my receiver, then out to my Asus VG236 monitor.
-Audio functions when I run from the card to my receiver then out to my plasma tv.
-Audio functions if I have the DVI run directly to the Asus VG236 monitor and HDMI to the receiver then plasma tv (only in dual display and the tv must be on for audio to function this way. If I turn the tv off even though the receiver is still on the audio stops working and windows sound lists the 'AMD HDMI Output' as not plugged in).
-Audio even fuctions when I run DVI to the monitor and HDMI to the receiver, then out to the HDMI port on the same monitor but the monitor will only run at 60hz this way even when DVI is selected on the monitor, as though it defaults to the HDMI when dvi and hdmi are both plugged into the monitor.
And if i run the hdmi to the receiver "HDMI IN" port without using the "HDMI OUT" port from the receiver to anything, like my tv or monitor, the sound doesn't work and in windows sound the "AMD HDMI Output" is listed as "not plugged in" .
I purchased this monitor for the true 120hz capabilities, the HDMI on this monitor doesn't support 120hz, the maximum is 60hz. DVI is required to run at 120hz. I don't see any option in windows sound settings or CCC to resolve this.
I have also tried disabling onboard audio in BIOS with no effect.
For now i'm running the audio out my MOBO jack through an optical cable to the receiver but optical only supports 2.1 sound.
Any suggestions you can offer would be appreciated, thank you

  • I need to have audio out from HDMI and headphone jack simultaneously

I need to have audio out from HDMI and headphone jack simultaneously.
I seem to be able to select one or the other, but not both ? !
    Thanks

No. You can only use one sound output:
Why can't I select HDMI audio on my Mac mini?
If you connect an HDMI display or television to a Mac mini (Mid 2010 or later), you might not be able to select the HDMI audio device (in System Preferences > Sound > Output). This can happen if you also have headphones plugged in to the computer. Unplug the headphones to be able to select HDMI audio.

  • How to record audio out from a portable player

Hi, I have a MacBook Air.  I want to capture the audio out (3.5mm jack) from an old SONY minidisk recorder into the Air.  I tried to plug speakers into the SONY and letting the internal mic capture the speaker sounds, but the quality wasn't crisp.  Can anyone recommend  a direct way (presumably thru USB) that ensures better quality?  Thanks.
BTW, the contents I am capturing are voice journals on mini-disc my grand father had recorded since the mid-90's before he pass recently.

Take a look at the Griffen iMic. I have used it to capture audio from a portable cassette player. I used iTunes to store the tracks.

  • A/V Composite cable video but no audio out

I just bought a new A/V composite Apple cable for my iPhone. I plugged it in to an LCD tv when I got home, and it WORKED with all the videos I have on the iPhone. I then (without unplugging) tried to play a song from the iPhone (purchased from ITMS). No Sound out.
Then I went back and tried to play a video again. Video out, no sound out!
Then I tried several un plugs and replugs, I tried a full shutdown and reboot of the iPhone. All with no effect. Now pictures and video still go out, but no sound out of the cable.
    Questions:
    1) Does anyone have a solution to this? Cable wasn't stressed or anything-and works with a different iPod Nano.
    2) Shouldn't the iphone put out audio through the A/V composite cable using it as an iPod?
    3) Although the iPhone asks, when starting a video with the cable plugged in whether you want to play on TV or not, is there any selection that needs to be made to get audio out from song files (just ipod sound out?)
    WSKCONDOR

*However, it doesn't explain why after returning to video the TV sound was still not present.*
If you mean you first tried to play an audio only file and then switched to an audio with video then it's most likely the TV was still shut down on that input. Try this (with the previous scenerio): after you're sure the iPhone is outputting both video and audio (with a movie, for example) just switch the TV inputs until you're back to that signal and I'll be it will show things again.
Once again, I think both the iPhone and the TV makers are culpable, but it's a shame the iPhone doesn't output the album art because this is what it does when you play it standalone. It just makes sense -- that fact it doesn't is a kind of "duh" (unless there are technical issues I just don't understand -- possible, even though I'm a programmer). But all of us who want this should go to feedback and post it and perhaps it will make it to the next release (I've asked for this about three times now).
