Audio out port stuck on optical digital, red, built in audio stopped working

Suddenly the optical (red) signal will go on instead of my internal speaker system when audio is available. i.e. red light shining out of the jack. I need the audio feedback from my powerbook and can't always lugg a speaker system along! What to do?

FTW,
I would call Apple Care. I have seen dozens of these same topics. Maybe I can suggest that you search these forums with the search utility provided on the forums ie:
http://discussions.apple.com/search.jspa?objID=f1026&search=Go&q=noaudio+fromspeakers
It seems to be a common problem, possibly when headphones are removed from the PB and the internal switch doesn't recognize when the headphones have been removed, thus not turning the internal speakers back on.
Good luck,

  • Audio stops working right after login

Hi everyone, I have a macbook pro 13inch mid 2009 running mac osx 10.7 lion. Few weeks ago the audio stopped working but after few moments and 2 reboots it started to work fine again. Now are 2 days that the problem came back. I tried to reboot multiple times, to reset the nvram and pram, to use headphones (they dont work either) and to kill the process coreaudiod. Still nothing! I know that it is not a hardware problem since the sounds stops working just right after I login (the sound at the start works and on the login screen the audio controllers still emit the sound), the only sound that seems work after the login is the sound of the trash folder when I empty it (weird isnt it?). I know that a osx reinstallation would probably solve the problem but I dont have time for that right now and I dont want to risk to lose some file. Does any of you have any solution?

    Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.
    Best.

    Hello,
I purchased a Slidebook last fall, and suddenly my audio stopped working. Yesterday, I was getting serious clipping when i played audio though my headphones. The internal speaker wouldn't work at all.
Today, neither headphones nor speaker work. I should mention that I'm running Ubuntu, but this has never been a problem before yesterday. Does this sound like a hardware issue? Has anyone else had this problem?

  • Audio stopped working (Macbook Pro)

The audio stopped working/I cannot adjust it at all. I googled and I've done a PRAM reset, I have no red light coming from the jack, and when I go to 'sound' via preferences it tells me that there are no output or input devices found. Help would be greatly appreciated!

You have to take the MBP to the Apple store to have it checked out.
If the computer is in warranty, it will be fixed free of charge.
Sometimes resetting SMC resolves the issue.

  • I can't connect to Wi-Fi - keeps timing out. No problem connecting from other laptops / phones. Stopped working after I did a system upgrade. What can I do?

I can't connect to Wi-Fi - keeps timing out. No problem connecting from other laptops / phones. Stopped working after I did a system upgrade. What can I do? I am on OS X Yosemite.

Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried, until the problem is resolved. Some of these steps are only possible if you have control over the wireless router.
    Step 1
Turn Wi-Fi off and back on.
    Step 2
Restart the router and the computer. Many problems are solved that way.
    Step 3
Change the name of the wireless network, if applicable, to eliminate any characters other than letters and digits. You do that on your router via its web page, if it's not an Apple device, or via AirPort Utility, if it is an Apple device.
    Step 4
    Run the Network Diagnostics assistant.
    Step 5
In OS X 10.8.4 or later, run Wireless Diagnostics and fix the issues listed in the Summary, if any.
    Step 6
Back up all data before proceeding.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Enter the name of your wireless network in the search box. You should have one or more "AirPort network password" items with that name. Make a note of the name and password, then delete all the items. Quit Keychain Access. Turn Wi-Fi off and then back on. Reconnect to the network.
    Step 7
You may need to change other settings on the router. See the guidelines linked below:
Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    Potential sources of interference
    Step 8
Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
    Step 9
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).

  • My audio stopped working suddenly (both w/ and w/o headphones) and a bluetooth error message keeps popping up?

Abruptly today my audio stopped working and when I plug my headphones it doesn't work either. A popup comes up saying something like "A Bluetooth Error Occurred, we are having trouble connecting to your audio device blah blah blah" then the only button to press is "Stop using headset", so I click that and nothing happens. When I open the bluetooth thing on system preferences the only device is a speaker that is across the country from me and is not connected.
    Can someone pleaseeeeee help me?
Finals are enough of a problem.

About two months ago I had a problem where no sound came out of any left headphones (headphones where fine) and this lasted about a week. I was going to have it checked, but then it started working and been ok since. Maybe giving it time will fix it by itself, or maybe it's a more serious problem and needs to be checked out. Hard to tell. It's best to get it checked out if this problem continues but first try restarting the computer. Goodluck on finals, I got em too.

  • Why does iPad audio stop working?

That's just it. With nothing running, the iPad audio stops working.  All app runs, but nothing comes out of the speaker.
It's so bad I had to stop using the iPad as my alarm clock and calendar since it's gone mute.  It has gotten progressively worse, but as I keep it updated I don't know if it is a progressive hardware failure or the new iOS updates. I went and removed almost all the apps, even did a factory reset thinking it was a memory issue...nope.  Even if all I run during the day is the built-in calendar, notes, and clock, or on some days, absolutely nothing, the audio still randomly stops.
Guess it's time for a new tablet? My experience with support and this tablet in particular will weigh very heavily in my decision making though.

When audio stops working from the speakers do earphones still work?

  • Audio stopped working on HTC Touch Pro 2

I have an HTC Touch Pro 2 running Windows Mobile 6.5 on Verizon.  Recently, the audio stopped working -- both for the telephone and the MP3 components of the device.  I can't hear people when they speak to me over the phone and they can't hear me.  Playback audio for the MP3 player doesn't work with either head phones or speaker.  If I do a hard re-set, the audio returns, but eventually disappears.  When the audio isn't working, the icon for headphones displays -- as though I have headphones plugged in even when I don't.  The icon stops falsely displaying when I manage to restore the audio.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem is?

    Hello RJLweb,
I appreciate you providing us with such details. Have you tried to plug phone headphones into the device & do a battery pull? In most cases, this will help the device determine when the headphone is plugged in or not. Also, please verify that the bluetooth is turned off on the device, just in case the device is trying to auto-pair. If these two options doesn't work, then a factory reset would be the next plan of action. Hopefully you have all your information backed up before performing this step. Once you have tried these steps, please respond with your results for additional troubleshooting, if necessary.
    Hope this helps...

  • Beat Audio Stopped Working - HP Pavilion DV7 Notebook PC

My audio stopped working and none of the recommended fixes seems to be working on my laptop.
Any other ideas? Is this because of a driver update issue or ? I would like to keep my beats audio, but if not, doesn't seem like I can even get back to a default sound.
Any advice or help is appreciated. I, like everyone else, uses thsi for watching DVDs, music, You Tube etc. Not to mention can't use for Skype calls anymore either. I know PCs don't last forever, but this is only 3 years old.
    Thanks in advance!

  • HP Pavilion dv6 audio stops working upon inserting headphone

I have a HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC with Windows 7 64-bit Service Pack 1 installed. Almost every time that I insert a headphone into either of the two headphone jacks the audio stops functioning and this issue continues even after I remove the headphone from the headphone jack. As a result when I want to play an audio on my laptop I get an error that there is a problem with the driver/sound device. I have the latest IDT High Definition Audio Codec driver installed, i.e. sp59542 ver. 6.10.6381.0. Occasionaly, disabling and enabling, or uninstalling and reinstalling the audio driver would resolve the issue but the problem would happen again upon connecting a headphone to my laptop. I have used two different headphones (differen brands) and the problem continues. From the searches I have done this seems to be a hardware issue and something related to the on/off switch in the headphone jack so I was wondering if HP is aware of this and whether any recall has been made. It looks like there are different symptoms associated with this hardware issue. Any help with fixing this problem would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi HP-User22,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP Pavilion dv6 and audio stops working when inserting headphone. Here is a link to update the BIOS.
I would be happy to assist if needed. How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
Have you tried to run a hardware test? Here is a link to do a hardware test. This will test all hardware functions.

  • IPod audio stops working after a few minutes of watching a video Mp4.

When watching full length movies on the iPod, my audio stops working at random. The only way to get it back is to stop the movie and advance it, then start it again.

What video conversion software did you use? And did
you install the latest IPOD updater?
I read more of the discussions and going back to the old version took care of the problem.
    Thanks!
