Audio out volume when Macbook is music server

I have moved my Late-2007 Macbook running 10.7.5 to be a music server.
This computer has a single analog/digital audio out/headphone jack.
I have a a 3.5 mm audio jack that splits into left-right RCA jacks which are plugged into my Yamaha stereo receiver. I guess since this is also a headphone port, the level of the output depends on the volume setting on the Mac.
When I turned it all the way down, I had to turn the Yamaha almost full blast to hear it.
At medium Mac volume it seemed to sound quite good through the Yamaha, which only needed a volume similar to, say, the CD player would take.
Is there any downside -- distortion or damage to the stereo receiver or bookshelf speakers -- to turning up the volume on the Mac? How far should I turn it up and/or how much of the volume should be made by the Yamaha?
If I get an external DAC to run between the Macbook and receiver and use a digital optical cable plugged into the Macbook's audio out, will it revert to digital line out with no volume control by the Macbook?

fixed it with insomniax

can anyone tell me how to get sound out of my macbook pro. i bought a miniport display/hdmi adapter for my tv but in network preferences i got video to work but not sond. i cant get my tv to come up as a listed device so that i can change setting on output audio. i was told maybe something is disabled as devices so confused any help greatly appreciated 516angelo

Your Mac does not have a thunderbolt port, but has a mini display port instead. It will not output sound so you will have to get sound through a aux cable.

  • Audio out jack malfunction macbook pro 15-inch (late 2008)

The audio out jack on my MacBook Pro is functioning intermittently.  I am sure this is a mechanical problem effecting the analog signal (no red light indicating digital output). I have checked the system prefs for sound-- output shows device connection and mute box is not checked. If I jiggle the plug I might eventually get a connection. Did a little research and the problem seems to be occurring in the 15-inch Unibody MBP from late 2008 (my machine) due to faulty design of the jack.  Most sites do not recommend replacement of the jack due to the necessity of resoldering to the logic board. Some suggested inserting a piece of tinfoil to tighten up the loose jack but I am not comfortable with this. Any suggestions out there?

    Hi
i was wondering if anyone could help me , ive just got a nokia x6 as a upgrade , i myself have a blackberry so i gave this to my dad however being parents do not know what there doing with a touch screen phone, this x6 will not play music out loud through the speakers , could he have changed anything on the phone ?? he told me this once and i tryed it and it worked but i have recently tryed the phone again and now the music will not play out loud through the speakers can anyone help?????

@steve_p: The point I am trying to make is your statement that the X6 has an annoying bug where the music player goes to near silent through the loud speakers. Just because it affects some phones but not all does not mean it is a bug. If it was a bug it would affect all phones not just some...
I do NOT agree with your logic at all. According to your reasoning every single X6 on the planet has to suffer a particular issue before that problem can then be termed a 'bug'. Taking that arguement to its ultimate conclusion you would state that the X6 has never suffered any bugs what-so-ever. I'm sorry I do NOT agree. I note you live in Australia, a totally different market from UK where I happen to be, as chanchan has stated there are hundreds of different product codes that cover just the X6 let alone the different hardware platforms RM559 & RM551 plus the 3 different mass storage sizes I mentioned above. Different batches of handsets and different market areas can suffer from different issues that won't necessarily be the same. I would class a bug as an issue that affects more than 1 person or a handful of people. Let's agree to disagree eh?

    Agreed. Hence my comments above.

I'm here to help people. If someone has an issue with their Nokia phone that I have had experience with or that I have found a solution to then I will help if I can. I don't have to justify myself to you by providing documented evidence and digging up proofs. Again I don't really care about my credibility to you either... people can see my full post history all the way back to 2005 when I first joined and they can judge for themselves if I my advice is worth taking, or not.

There you go again!!! You know it's funny that in my 5 years of posting on this forum only one person has had problems with the factual accuracies of my posts... You! Please enlighten me by way of PM to my past misdemeanours and I will happily discuss them with you, again via PM, I think this poor thread has been spammed to death as it stands. Can I also please ask that in the future if you have any problems with my posts and you think that I am deliberately trying to mislead or post falsehoods that you notify a moderator, or contact me via PM. Quite frankly, I don't like your tone or attacking nature and I don't like being typecast as a liar or worse an uninformed idiot and I'll thank you not to point accusations my way again. If, however, you have another point of view to my own and can put that down in a civil way then I'll happily respond. I will leave it there for now and I will do my best not to post in this thread again, unless to give further help to the original poster.

  • Macbook Pro Audio out jack Stereo Phono's ok?

I'm using the Macbook Pro's built in output (3.5" Jack) due to a messy workaround involving the digital optical out of the same port.
I record the Macbook Pro (VST's and FX) as Audio to another PC Recorder which is using the Edirol UA-25 (which has optical too)
Fine, but the downside is that the Edirol will only let you record digitally with the "Digital In" button pressed in, and will only allow monitoring of said recorded signal with the Digital button out! This is obviously annoying, but also you can't monitor playback of the last track whilst recording the next!!
So to cut a long story short, is the single 3.5" audio out from a Macbook Pro ok to record into the Edirol (analog) with 2 x phonos into the L&R?
Sounds a bit primitive in theory, but sounds ok, and i suppose many synths etc get recorded this way via analog outs to ins?

Yes thats the UA-25 I have.
What I am doing is treating my Macbook Pro (Mac OSX) as one machine running Logic/Ableton, and another 19" monitor running Parallels (windows xp) for my audio editor and VST's
So what I am trying to do is record from one to the other
I put the UA-25 USB Soundcard on the Windows/Parallels side to record 'in', and use the Macbook Pro's output/on-board soundcard as an 'output'
As explained with Digital, you can't monitor whilst recording the next part (due to Digital switch) which you have to keep pressing on/off/on/off to monitor/record
The easiest way i think is to come out of the analog Macbook Pro out 3.5" and split into 2 x Phono L&R going into the analog of the UA-25
Seems to work well, but just wanted some thoughts on the quality?

  • Audio out whine/hiss

Hey there all. I have a 20" intel iMac. Everything sounds great from the built in speakers, however plug headphones into the audio out port, when there is no audio coming out of the imac - I hear a faint, high pitched hiss or whine. It's not as noticable when say music is playing, but it **** near makes the audio out port useless for me.
Does anyone else experience a similar whine/hiss/annoying noise?

    This problem has been discussed:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1751797
Using external speakers, the noise usually doesn't bother me because I can't hear it unless the speakers' volume level is turned up really high. But when I use headphones (which isn't often), the sound is undeniable and annoying. Like others, I have found that moving Mighty Mouse changes the pitch and frequency of the noise, and unplugging Mighty Mouse stops the noise completely.
It's not a big deal for me, since I don't use headphones often and the noise isn't as apparent via external speakers (unless they're really cranked), but I really hope there's some kind of fix for this. So far, this is the only flaw/problem that I've discovered with my two-month-old iMac Core Duo. Otherwise, it's a wonderful, wonderful machine and I couldn't be happier.

  • Why doesn't the Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock relay sound from it's audio out port?

Posted to Belkin Support community to no avail

Why can't my Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock operate my desktop speakers?
    Options
    07-14-2014 01:48 PM
Bought a Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock at the Apple Store to use with my new MacBook Pro.
When I connected it to my
    -20" Mac Cinema display,
-Various USB connected hubs and devices,
    -Various Firewire hubs and devices
-My ethernet network from my Cable Modem
Then made the last connection from the Dock to the Thunderbolt port on the MacBook Pro...
    All was fine.
But when I made that one last connection - to my desktop speakers via the audio-out port on the dock (earphones icon) nothing happened.  The dock did not pick up the audio from the laptop playng an iTunes song or send it to the desktop speakers.  When I unplugged the audio cable from the Dock and plugged it in to the MacBook Pro directly, the desktop speakers kicked right in again.
Does Thunderbolt pick up audio-out from a MacBook Pro and carry it to the Dock for connection to my desktop speakers?
Of for some reason, can that signal not be carried by Thunderbolt?
Will I have to get used to the onerous task of unplugging 2 cables from my MacBook Pro when I want to more it to another location in stead of just 1 cable?
But stay with me.  Here's the thing.
When this happened I called Belkin Customer Support to ask if they could help me.  After taking me through their steps, they agreed that the unit must be defective and agreed to ship me a replacement Thunderbolt Express Dock.
The replacement arrived over the weekend and when I shut down my system and then plugged everything from Dock I purchased into the replacement Thunderbird Express Dock - - - - - the same thing happened!
No signal to the speakers from the dock.  Perfect signal when the plug moved from the Dock to the computer itself.
    Hence my question:
Does Thunderbolt pick up audio-out from a MacBook Pro and carry it to the Dock for connection to my desktop speakers?
    Can it accomplish that function?
Am I really that unlucky to have received 2 defective new Belkin Thunderbolt Express Docks in a row?
Or is it simply a matter of the Dock not handling audio throughput in the manner I am expecting.
Then again, if this is the case, why did the Belkin techies not know this when I called them in the first place.
Yes, I'm going on and on here.  But I really don't have time for this.
    What's going on here?

OK.  No reason to be playing games here.  Just surprised that this issue hasn't been brought up here on the community boards as well.  Here's the simple solution

After reaching a Level III technician in Belkin customer support today and having spent approximately 4-5 person hours on this issue, we figured out that the Sound/Output preferences in the Apple System Preferences should not be set to "Internal Speakers"  but rather set to "USB PnP Sound Device".
Worked like a charm.  Simple, elegant solution to a real problem, one likely to be encountered by 90% of the people who buy a Belkin Thunderbid Express Dock off the shelves of any Apple Store to use with a current generation Apple laptop or desktop computer.
But the Level III Belkin technician admmtted that this critical little piece of simple, straightforward information should have been readily available to their Level 1 techies who began helping me 5 person hours ago.  Would even have saved Balkin loads of customer service support time.
    And so the saga ends
Belkin owes me for helping them learn this precious lesson.

  • Audio Out to Surround Sound

Does anyone know of a cable that can convert the audio out on a MacBook Pro to 5.1 surround sound? I have a Logitech G51 speaker system and would like to use it with my computer.

Ok, based on what i know you are not able to purchase any one cord to deliver 5.1 surround sound. What you can do though and rather inexpensively for a entry level ($30-$60 on Amazon) is purchase a USB external sound card. Once you download the drivers for the usb device you can connect the logitec speakers to the sound card and enjoy the 5.1 channel surround sound. Hope this helps!

  • I have a 6thgen Nano, and all the recent songs I've purchased from iTunes wont play at normal volume when connected via audio cable. Can anyone help me figure out why?

This is a semi-new problem, ongoing for several months. I've purchased songs from iTunes before and they play just fine on my Nano when connected to an audio jack cable, but for some reason, anything downloaded in the last few months plays at an insanely low volume. Normally, if I hit the advance button on the Nano to skip to the next song I'll hear a split second of the song at normal volume, but that's it.
I've restored both the iPod and my iTunes (using a Dell laptop, Windows 7) multiple times but to no avail. The songs play fine in iTunes itself, but I've even noticed a decrease in volume when listening to the songs on headphones. I'm beyond frustrated with this as I can't find any support online in the Apple archives, and I can't listen to any of my new music without burning to disc. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I have, a couple different pairs, unfortunately, and still no change. TBH, the headphones don't bug me nearly as bad as the fact that I can't plug my iPod into a radio or speaker with an audio cable and hear my latest purchases. Drives me crazy that I can't listen to my tunes!

  • HT200131 When I connect my MacBook Air to my TV using Apple TV, the audio stays on my MacBook and does not transfer to my TV. Thus the volume is very low when I am watching a Movie on my TV and I have to listen to the volume from my laptop. How can I fix

When I connect my MacBook to my television using Apple TV the audio stays on the MacBook and doesn't transfer to the TV. How can I make it so I can hear the Movie or Video through my TV's speakers and not my MacBook's?

This is called "extended desktop mode".  It's an extension of the desktop off to the right (by default) of your MBair screen.  Grab an app and drag it off the right side of your MBair screen and it will appear on the TV.
To mirror your MBair screen on the TV you can press Command F1.  This will toogle between mirror and extended desktop.
You can find all the settings in System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement tab.

  • Help with audio out when plugging into 3.5" jack on a MacBook's combo input

With my old iMac, I used to plug my guitar into the 3.5" microphone jack* and either used the computer's speakers or plug headphones into the separate headphone port for audio out.
Now I have MacBook Air with a headphone/mic combo port. I checked the sound settings in System Preferences and couldn't select speakers for external audio. Is there a way to assign audio-out to the speakers and keep audio-in assigned to the mic/headphone port? Or am I going to need to buy some dongle or adapter now?
*How did I connect a guitar to the 3.5" port? I used a generic computer speaker wire (3.5" on each side) and plugged a 3.5" to 1" adapter (the kind you use for stereo headphones) into the guitar.

    Hi Tim -
Please bear with me because I am no Apple expert. However, I do remember reading something that might help you out.
You wrote that you store your sound libraries are installed on an external drive. Someone, who posted either here or on another Logic bulletin board, basically stated that problems may occur if an external hard disk drive that carries the sound libraries is FAT32 or NTFS formatted (formatted for a Windows-based computer). Apparently, an external hard disk drive utilized for sound libraries should be formatted as *Mac OS Extended* (not journaled). (I hope that someone more expert on this subject will either validate this claim or suggest another option.)
Try doing a Search in this forum for more information on this subject. But I think how that external drive is formatted might make a difference on performance for the Mac computer.
I come from the PC world as well. I like both the Apple and PC systems. But I really like working with the Logic program.
    Good luck to you

  • Lossy Audio when you RDP into Server 2012 R2

I recently decided to take the risk to upgrade my Terminal Server to Windows Server 2012 R2, to find out that what I worried about, came true. My audio applications have become Lossy via RDP, you can actually hear artifacts when playing audio.
In Windows Server 2012, the audio was PERFECT, lossless and as if you are using the audio application on the computer. In fact, this was the BEST thing Microsoft has done with RDP for Windows Server 2012- improving the sound quality DRAMATICALLY via RDP. I
know that RDP isn't designed for listening to music or viewing multimedia, but they honestly have changed that in Windows 8 and Server 2012. Seriously, they did.
So my question would be- How do I DISABLE audio compression via terminal services on Windows Server 2012 R2, or do I have to go back to Windows Server 2012 which would honestly be a hassle being that I need to reinstall my terminal server? Otherwise, how
do I deactivate my copy of Windows Server 2012 R2 so that I can reuse the license key?
Or if there is no solution, this issue needs to be reported to Microsoft for us to at LEAST disable bandwidth consumption and multimedia streaming compression and restore back the RDP audio capabilities that we had in Windows Server 2012.

    Hi,
I would like to know if the audio is perfect on Windows Server 2012 R2 locally.
Please check the following GP setting as well.
    Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Device and Resource Redirection
    Limit audio playback quality: Enabled
    Audio Quality: High
On the Client PC, in the .rdp file that you use to connect to the server, make sure you have the following line:
    audioqualitymode:i:2
If the issue persists, I’m afraid there is no method to downgrade to Windows Server 2012 and you need to reinstall the server. If you are the subscriber, there is no need to deactivate Windows Server 2012 R2. Last but not least, I will
collect your feedback and report the issue.

  • Hi, Im having trouble with my Iphones sounds, it wont let me listen to music, watch videos, notify me if i get a text, basically everything that makes a sound is no longer working. The volume level you get when you play music isnt there, HELP?!

Hi, basically i have no sound at all on my Iphone, it doent notify me when i get a text, when someone rings, when i play music or watch videos, the volume slider that is usually present while watching videos or listening to music is no longer there at all, ive turned my phone on and off a couple of times now ive put headphones in and out to see if i had a sticky jack but still no luck Someone help??

And to clarify, these are all iTunes movie and music downloads, so there should not be a compatability issue. And no, the iPod did not come damaged from Apple, it was a hand-me-down from a friend who busted the internal speaker. But it's never done anything like this before. It just had crappy sound. And yes, the timing of the movies and music having issues is the same as the speaker dying. And no, this has NOTHING To do with music videos. I don't have any on any of our devices.

  • Trying to connect a Belkin brand audio cable from my MacBook Pro to a Sony flatscreen TV. Cannot get any sound from the laptop out of the TV. What am I doing wrong?

I'm trying to connect a Belkin brand stereo audio cable from my MacBook Pro to a Sony flatscreen TV (Apple "genius" handed me the cable to purchase.)  I have tried all the ports in the back of the Sony, and tried the volume on both the cable and TV remotes. I cannot get sound out of the Sony from my MacBook Pro laptop. What am I doing wrong???

Downloaded your operating manual.  It appears that you need to connect the HDMI to HDMI 1 and the audio to the input socket just to the right of the VGA socket (i.e., between the VGA and the RF input connection).  The picture on page13 seems to be the clearest I could find:
Although it's not exactly clear I think they are talking about a standard 3.5 mm (1/8") stereo jack for the audio inpu as opposed to the more common RCA jacks used in the row just above that VGA input socket.
I haven't checked the manual as yet whether you need to set anything special with the controls other than input select.
Note, if that truly is a 3.5 mm stereo jack cables are very common.  In your case it would just be a cable with a 3.5 mm jack on each end.
    Update:
You will have to experiment with this but I think you will need to try pusing the input button to select either HDMI1 or PC (or Component?).  The manual is not clear on this (page 31).  Sometimes it just comes down to pushing buttons.
