Audio output levels for web compression...

What is the highest db setting to use when outputting from Premiere. I just started using it and I did a few test for web compression and the audio seemed low.
I tried some material that I had editied in FCP and setting the same levels for output and it gave me different results.
What is highest we should go at peak level? -3.
Worked with FCP and Soundtrack Pro so I kinda have a system worked mixing audio. Just need to transfer to Premiere.
Thanks in advance

Already, you have gotten three answers, expressing three personal choices. They are somewhat close, but each differs by the editor.
I am glad that you are asking, because one of my really big pet-peeves is to find a tutorial, that I really want to view, only to have an ad, that runs before the tutorial hit at about +6dB above the Audio levels of the tutorial (like ads on many TV broadcasts), and I have to quickly attenuate the Volume, only to have to ride the Volume up, to hear that tutorial. This can be really painful, if I am working with my headphones on.
Though not directly related to your specific question, I find that most DVD's, and BD's have the Intro, and Menu Audio set too loud. When doing authoring, I attenuate the Audio for both down, to slightly below the Levels of the actual disc. I want those to be "background" only, and never want users running for the Volume control.
Good luck, and hope that you do find a "sweet spot," that works for your material.

  • Changing audio output device for currently running program

I'm not sure where to put this question, but all my searching hasn't seemed to find an answer...
If I have a program running, iTunes, VLC, a game, whatever, and want to change audio output from say Line Out to Headphones, I have to restart the program for the change to take effect. Is this by design/normal or am I missing something somewhere?

this is actually a quiet significant issue. There is no way in Flash to select the audio output device.
Today  people have regular speakers and a separate headset. They all use the  speakers for music and the headset for voice. Skype i.e. has the option  to choose audio output device and its really handy, because
you dont  have to bother to set the default device to the headset everytime you  want to use it.
If you set the default device to the headset all other apps will send their audio  output to the headset - which is not what you want either.
So people  really want to leave the default device set to the speakers and not to  the headset.
    Nokia did this for Java
JRT 2.1 / Nokia UI API updated to version 1.4:
AudioOutputControl extension for controlling which audio output device, for example the device loudspeaker or earpiece, is used to play back audio
    This really is an issue.

  • STB QIP2500-3 audio output level

There is a noticeable difference between the audio output level (loudness) of the RF (ch3/4) and the baseband (L/R stereo) on the STB QIP2500-3. The RF is louder than the baseband. Is there any way to increase the output level of the baseband L/R stereo level, thanks.

Go to the Main Menu by pressing 'Menu' key on remote, Settings, Audio, Make sure the 'Set Top Box Volume' is at its max.  Audio format can be put on 'Stereo'.  Volume control can be put on 'Fixed'.  Finally set the Dynamic Range to 'Heavy'.  The following settings usually give the best audio output.

  • I lost audio output except for USB headset any Ideas?

Has anyone experienced the loss of audio output except for the USB port?  If so what might I try to fix the problem?

    Hello,
Ever had anything plugged into the sound out port, sometimes the jack doesn't close properly?
Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time.
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back.

  • Apple Audio Output levels / monitor calibration

Hello all. I am mixing sfx and foley out of my macbook pro, and as a student on a very limited budget, I am forced to monitor with a consumer stereo - run of the mill Sony surround receiver, powering a pair of JBL Northridge N26II's. I know, bad reference and probably a frequency curve that is not even close to flat, but it is all I have access to right now for the bulk of my work. I have limited studio time with monitors, and I plan to use this to touch up these mixes that were done on the JBL's. The idea is that I do the bulk of my work, then bring it into the studio, hopefully to be able to salvage the mix. At least it is better than headphones.
Anyway, I am attempting to calibrate my system, and I have a few questions. To get the audio out (at line level I believe, through the headphone jack on the MBP), I am wondering at what level I should set my system volume. Is the zero at the highest setting, as indicated on the volume slider in the Audio Output section of the Audio MIDI Setup program in OSX? Or is this amplifying the signal?
Also, I have been told that I could use the ref. tone generated when one puts the bars up in Final Cut Pro to calibrate my monitoring setup, thus assuming that every level slider is at zero on the way from the audio source (say tone in FCP, or tracks of audio in STP or logic), I could adjust the receiver's volume control to playback the tone at a comfortable level and keep it there for the duration of the mix. Is this legit, or do I have some flaws in this plan?

  • Version Numbers Vs. Patch Levels For Web Tools

I have noticed that version numbers for Web Tools such as 620, 621, 622, 624, 625, 627, and 628 correspond somehow to the patch level (6, 8, 10, etc.). What is the difference between the version numbers and patch levels, and which ones match up with which?

    Hi Michael,
Prior to p10, the last digit of the version corresponds to the patch level.
From p10 going forward, the last set of digits represents the patch.
    Patch 10 is 2007.0.630.10
    Patch 11 will be 2007.0.631.11
The version will only change if there are upgrade scripts that need to run for the patch.

  • Diagnosing output PDF-for-Web problems?

Where I work, we accept PDFs from clients (most using InDesign) and do a conversion so their magazines are accessible via devices like the iPad. Since our software converts pages to images, all layout is preserved. Our online reader allows magazine visitors to zoom in, so page resolution has to be about 144 pixels. We have one unhappy client who insists that we've done something different with their most recent two magazines that has caused degradation in quality. I've zoomed in on an image in one of their older magazines and its most recent version in a newer edition, and confirmed that the recent version looks pixelated and has excessive contrast/saturation. However, 1) None of our other clients have this problem despite their magazines being run through the same software, and 2) the settings inside our software have not been changed in more than a year.
I figure I have two options. Either look at the PDFs they sent us and figure out what they're doing wrong (their graphic designer has limited experience) or find a spec sheet somewhere that lists the best InDesign PDF output settings to use for Web reading (including retina screens), and send those settings to their designer.
Problem is, I don't know how to analyze a PDF, and my search for the optimum InDesign output settings leads me down several different roads. Can't really test it myself because we rarely use InDesign at our end.  Suggestions?

Why not run a preflight check in Acrobat Pro? You can set up a check for images of less than x ppi.

  • Output options for Web module

I have several suggestions to improve web gallery output using the Web and Print modules.  First, and most important, should be the options to "Preview and Save", and "Export and Upload".  With these options, when an event like an upload error occurs, the entire gallery doesn't have to be re-processed.  Example:  I attempted to upload a gallery of 400 photos this morning.  After an hour or so, the remote server closed the connection causing me to have to recreate the entire gallery from the start, and another hour lost. Having the option to save the gallery locally in addition to previewing or uploading would be really practical.
Second, I'd like to have the ability to add info to the grid pages (html gallery), such as file name or rating.  A simple drop down menu in the Site Info column...
Finally, how 'bout the ability to add text to the top of a contact print? Example: say I'm printing a grid of selected images from a shoot.  I'd like to be able to add identifying info to the top of that printed sheet as well as file info such as file name with each photo.

    Rob,
The 9401 is bidirectional, and when set to input, will function as a tristate output.  There are a couple of things to keep in mind with this module: 1) When set to input, the lines still have a weak pulldown resistor with a min. value of 45 kOhms, as specified in the manual.  2) Line direction may only be controlled in banks on the 9401.  This means that DIO 0:3 must all be set to the same direction, and 4:7 must all be set to the same direction.  I don't have enough information about your setup to know if this will provide a complete solution.
Please post any additional questions, or more details about your application if you're still not sure whether or not this solves your needs.
    Thanks,

  • HD for web compression problem

I'm trying to compress some HD footage shot on an HVX200 for the web and am having a problem with jagged edges. I'm somewhat new to HD, but this problem resembles interlacing artifacts from my previous DV days. Straight lines aren't straight, they're jagged and the edges around people with white shirts on dark backgrounds have a similar jagged/digital characteristic. Here's how my project is set up.
Shot on HVX200 at 24pn. Edited in FCP and my sequence settings are 960X720 HD (16:9) frame size. Pixel Aspect Ratio of HD (960X720) and QuickTime Video Settings set to Compressor: DVCPRO HD 720p60 at 100% quality.
When I save a self-contained quicktime movie like this and view it on my monitor, no jagged edges. It looks exactly as I'd like it to look after its compressed. However, when I pull it into compressor and try to encode it with h.264, it comes out with the jagged edges. I have the following settings in my Compressor summary:
    Format: QT
    Width: 480
    Height: 360
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square
    Field Output: Same as source
Frame Controls On (Retiming: Fast, Resize filter: linear filter, deinterlace filter: best)
I've tried what feels like all of the various combinations of sequence and compressor settings. Obviously, I've not tried them all. How would I render this out for high quality web display?

Compressing as mp4 instead, I was able to get this to work tweaking some of the settings in there. Only problem now is an enormous file size that I have to work to get down, but whatever my issue was, seems to have been corrected.

  • Analog Audio Output Jack for Digital Speakers with same jack configuration

I just purchased my first Mac, a Mac Pro. I can't get sound to my speakers using the analog out jack. With my old PC, there was a setting for "digital output" even though the digital speakers were attached via to the same style jack as the Mac's analog out jack. I've tried going to preferences but don't see a like setting for digital output. Is there a setting to do so and if not, is there an adapter to convert the Mac's digital audio out to the analog jack style?

Do you want digital or analog? Your question seems to imply that you have speakers that accept a digital signal but you also say you want analog...??
Anyway, my Mac Pro (2006 model) has separate analog and optical digital outputs on the back. The pictures on the apple website still show the same thing on the Mac Pro so I'm guessing it's the same. I think only the Mac laptops have the analog/optical digital combo jacks...
The optical digital outputs are the little white squarish ports beneath the rear firewire ports.
The MacPro does not have a SPDIF RCA style output. Maybe that is what you are thinking of from the windoze pc...
You should be able to enable the rear analog line output or the digital outputs from the System Preferences > Sound > Output screen. The front headphone outputs kind of act weird in that they disable the rear line output (if I remember correctly, I never use the front port...).

  • Fluctuating audio output level during music playback on iPhone 6

    Hi,
When playing music on my iPhone 6 the volume level of the music suddenly drops sometimes and takes ages to go back to the original level. It doesn't matter whether I'm listening to music through my headphones, or when docked to a speaker or via airplay: the problem eventually happens (usually within 5mins). I've tried a factory reset, and I've tried a settings reset but neither of them worked. All I can think of at the moment is that there is an application running in the background that is interfering with music playback. Will try each one in turn and report back. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I have three other iOS8 devices (various iPad mini models) where this problem does not occur.
    Thanks and regards, Keri
    P. S. This problem happened with iOS8 before upgrading to 8.1.2.

"How would I know which all apps render audio?  Any shortcut to find out?"
No shortcut. You have to see whether they play audio or not. That simple. For example, Skype does.

  • Setting audio output levels automatically at login (even with command-line)

When I log in, the audio level seems to be at the level set by the last user. Is there a way to get this to automatically set to my preferred level when I log in?
A related question: Is there a command-line method of setting the audio level?
    Thanks in advance,

Power Mac G5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2GB ECC Memory

    u could use scripting...
sudo osascript -e "set Volume 20"
using that at the command line will change the volume level to 20.
you could put that in a script or something and have it launch at login.

  • Output files for Web Help

I am new to Robohelp. I am using Robohelp 8 and FrameMaker 9 for TC 2 on Windows XP.
Previously I used Webworks Publisher 2003 to convert my project and the output was put into one folder. I'm having difficultly figuring out how to do that with Robohelp 8. Right now it is putting each converted page in a separate subfolder with a *.css file. I don't even need the *.css file for each file because I just use one *.css file for the whole project.
So, for example, if I convert a FrameMaker book called BigBook.book and it has these files:
    -ScreenA.fm
    -ScreenB.fm
    -ScreenC.fm
Then, I want Robohelp to put all of the converted book files in a folder called "Output" with the names:
    -ScreenA.htm
    -ScreenB.htm
    -ScreenC.htm
Why? This help is contextual and I hand it over to the developers for the help. When the end-user clicks the help button, the GUI has a script that looks in one folder for a *.htm file that matches the *.jsp file of the GUI.
Sorry if this has been asked before. I looked around, but I could not find anything.
    Thanks,
    M.Hess

    Welcome to the RH forums.
Can you clarify for us whether you are linking a FrameMaker document to your RoboHelp project and updating the content, or importing your FrameMaker documents? It sounds like the later.
In this case, what you can do is create a folder in your RoboHelp project called "Output". Before you import your FrameMaker documents, select this folder in your Project Manager pod. This ensures that any imported files are placed inside that directory. As you already have files you've imported, you can move them to a directory as you see fit. Just create an "Output" folder and click and drag the files into it in the Project Manager pod.

  • Adjust output level of audio files in Quicktime export??

    Hello...
I have been using Quicktime to create little ringtones (take an audio snippet, export as .aiff then convert to MP3 for my cell phone). However, the output of these ringtones played on my phone, compared to some other ringtones I have, is VERY loud.
I was wondering if there is a way either with Quicktime (where I export the .aiff file) or with iTunes (where I convert to MP3) that I can adjust the audio output level of the file so that it is less loud??
    Thanks!!
    Scott

I WAS WRONG. But there is a solution... record a screen movie using Quicktime (System 10.7 and 10.8).
Open Quicktime, in the file menu select "New Screen Recording," run your Keynote Presentation and the movie with sound will record if you use Soundflower.
Soundflower is a free program that can record system sound with QuickTime X, download at <http://cycling74.com/products/soundflower/>
In "Sound" system preference, set the output to "Soundflower (2ch)". (If you enable "Show volume in menu bar" you can Option-Click the volume icon in the menu bar to select audio devices.)
In QuickTime X's screen recording window, click the triangle near the top-right to select "Soundflower (2ch)" for the audio inout, then start recording. Keep the monitor volume slider in the recording window all the way to the left or else there will be echo on the recording.
You won't hear the sound while recording because it is going directly into QuickTime. If you beed to listen while recording, you will also need Audio Hijack Pro <http://www.rogueamoeba.com/audiohijackpro/> Hijack the application producing the sound and use the "Auxiliary Device Output" effect to send audio to "Soundflower (2ch)", then make the recording.
When using Soundflower to send audio to and from applications, you may find that you are not able to send audio through another device to monitor audio output. In such situations you can use Soundflowerbed, an application that resides in the Finder’s Menubar allowing you to tap into Soundflower channels and route them to an audio device. To start the Soundflowerbed menu app go to the Soundflower folder in /Applications and within it open Soundflowerbed.app.
