Audio output options
Can't find any options for switching on audio in audio options through an output device and can't hear anything when connecting my Mac through Thunderbolt to my external TV. Audio devices only show an option for internal speakers.
Video is fine through Thunderbolt.
Can anyone help with this?
My only other suggestion is that if you TV has a headphone jack, buy a cheap set of headphones or earbuds (or just the plug that fits the jack from someplace like RadioShack), and plug them in. On most TV's with such a jack, plugging in the headphones will disconnect the speakers. Iif you can still hear the sound from the headphones or earbuds, just cut them off. As long there is something in the headphone jack, the speakers should be disconnected.

Cannot see Airport Express as an Audio Output option!
Hello All,
Very frustruating.
I bought an AirPort Express hoping to use it as a Audio output device for movies/spotify etc.
Plugged it all in to my reciever (using optical cable) configured it to my TC network.
Opened itunes and the Airplay function is working perfectly. Music is streaming as expected.
However i cannot see the AE in the audio output options (when i "option+click" the speaker icon).
Tearing my hair out as this was the primary reason for purchasing the AE!
any help would be greatly apprecaited.
TimTrying to play movies through VLC and stream the Audio component to my AirPort express. Similary use Spotify on my computer and stream the audio component.
I thought i would be able to enable my laptop (Macbook Air) to use the Airport Express as its 'speakers' through selecting it as the output source in System preferences.
However it does not show up in the system preferences at all, what has me stumped is the Airport Express is 100% functional through itunes as well as some third party applications (Airfoil).
Im very confused as other users (from extensive google searching) appear to be able to atleast see the AirPort Express as an output device.
Any help greatly appreciated. -
Audio output options in GB Prefs is dimmed
I imported an MP3 into GB 2 and plugged in my headset to listen more closely. I set it up as a Real INstrument Basic track. Went to System Prefs and tried to change the Audio Output, but it was dimmed and set to Built-in. What is necessary to change it to the USB headset?

I have, via optical digital audio (toslink), connected my Mac Pro to my Sony BDV E-300 which plays audio in 5.1 surround with five speakers.
I have also routed the audio tracks in FCP but alas it plays back in two speaker (Stereo). -

It would be really cool if on my MacBook I could run iTunes over my external speakers and system notification sounds over my internal speakers (incl. Skype ringing etc.)

"Crash in progress" Error when I click "Format Options" under "Audio Output"
In the Render Queue, I selected Custom under "Output Module". I changed the Format to "QuickTime Movie" using the JPEG - Photo codec (is it a codec?) However when I clicked on "Format Options" under "Audio Output", I got this.
There are two things here. The first and most important part is that, if there's a button, it shouldn't crash when pressing it. Agreed. Looks like a QT-related issue (if reverting to an earlier version of QT will fix it). But in any case, please feel free to file a bug report explaining the problem here.
The second thing would also be true if the button worked flawlessly: If you want to send to a client a video/audio file with reduced file sizes, bear in mind that Quicktime has not added a specific codec for this purpose since the early 2000s. They chose to follow the standards-based MPEG-4/H264 format. After Effects will make much better H264 files with compressed audio as well, if you pick "H264" as a format in the Output Module. An H264 file with MP4 extension will play perfectly on both Quicktime and the latest version of Flash. An H264 file with MOV extension should have the same quality (but not when done from AE), and it will only be compatible with Quicktime. They are otherwise identical.
Again, nothing in point 2 contradicts the fact that it shouldn't crash. -
Asrock ION330/Nvidia HDMI - No audio output
Machine was running archlinux and not been upgraded in over 6mths but HDMI audio worked fine. Decided to do a scratch build since all the changes in that time and have a nice clean system.
If it helps, this is what I install. Ssed this exact same install process for another Asrock ION330 and Acer Revo3610 (both same hardware) but neither use HDMI at all. Both VGA with either optical or analog audio. Both work with no additional config.

Get no sound output but also zero errors on any of the following commands. I should add that the receiver does not detect any audio coming in, ie it usually identifies how many channels of audio and type it is receiving.

FWIW, I even tried changing the HDMI cable, turning the amp on before or after the PC etc. No change.

audio output will not work on external speakers. Internal speakers will work. What do i do to replace audio output slot
Right click your volume icon in the notification area and select "volume control options". From there, you should be able to select the external speakers.

Help! No Audio Output device is installed
My speaker in bottom right for My sound say "No Audio Output Device Is Installed" and i have tried to go through many things to solve such as go into device manager and enable or update through there etc...to no avail.
I stumbled across a thing that worked for most people. Recovery Manager. but. I don't have it on my computer to try so i have no other options to turn to. Can someone please help on how to fix this issueDear Customer,

To isolate the issue please perform the steps below:
1. Restart the computer.
2. Check the Sound icon in the taskbar.
3. If the icon has an X in the lower corner, click the Sound icon in the taskbar or
4. Right-click the icon, and then click Troubleshoot sound problems.
5. The audio troubleshooter checks for sound problems. When the troubleshooter finishes, it displays the results.
6. If the computer has sound, the issue is resolved.
Install Original Realtek High Definition Audio Driver from the link below:

From the above link click on Driver-Original > Original Realtek High Definition Audio Driver > Download and install the same.

my hp keeps telling that have no audio output device installed and theres the the image for volume with a large red circle with a white x in it.
this is not true because i have contexant (i think that's what it is called) speakers installed.
Lately when i would restart my computer the sound would work intermittently but for the past two days whether i restart my computer or not the image for volume with a large red circle with a white x in it is still there and says no audio output device installed. PLEASE HELP!

Step 1 : Re-install audio drivers from HP Recovery Manager.
1. Click Start, in the Start search box, type recovery . Then click Recovery Manager .
2. In the Recovery Manager window that displays, click Next. On the Reinstall software programs that came with your computer screen, click No, I would like to see other options . Then click Next .
3. In the Reinstall hardware drivers screen, click Yes . Then click Next. On the Welcome to Hardware Driver Reinstaller screen, click Next .
4. In the driver list, select the name of the sound adapter installed on the system. Then click Next. When complete, the Reinstallation is complete screen displays. Click Finish to restart the computer. After the computer starts, test for sound. If the issue persists perform step 2.
Step 2 : Re-install audio drivers manually
If there is no sound and the error still displays, update the audio driver from the weblink below :

I can't select "audio output stereo" on a track in the arrange window
When I create a new song, in the Arrange window I can
choose "audio output stereo" for a given track, and
access the mixer's output from there. Fab.
When I open a song that I oringally created using Logic 5,
"audio output stereo" does not appear.
Is this something about the file format?
(a) is there something simple to do to enable that for
older songs, or (b) is there a way to convert older song files to LE7?

Hey everyone,
I use my machine for a lot of music/audio applications and generally have a pair of monitor headphones plugged in so I don't disturb the neighbors.
Sometimes, for some reason or another, I'd like to switch output to the system speakers. I've noticed that on bootup, no matter if I have my headphones plugged in or not, the startup chime plays on the system speakers. This would indicate that there's some kind of software control over audio output. Is this correct?
It's too much of a hassle to go unplug and replug my headphones all the time, and it would be usefull if there was some widget or something that would just let me toggle between devices (headphones and system speakers). Does such a widget exist?
Thanks!After some extensive research and hunting around, it seems that there is currently no native OS support for switching between headphones (plugged directly into a machine), and the machine's system speakers.
I'm still fairly convinced that this is a result of the OS's (i.e. software) control, as the startup chime is always played through the system speakers, and not the result of some kind of hardware override as many people across the web have speculated. Though, I suppose I could be wrong.
The root of this issue is that the system speakers become unavailable as a sound output option (from the System Preferences >> Sound menu) when headphones are plugged in. Hopefully, some concession will be made in future OS updates.
My solution for know is just to shop for a set of speakers so that at least it'll be easier to plug/unplug my headphones. -
HOW TO: HDMI Audio Output for Zotac Media Box with nVidia ION :)
I've been fighting with my recently purchased Zotac mini-PC for about 2 months now trying to get the HDMI audio output to work. I tried extensive modifications of /etc/asound.conf, different versions of ALSA, and even OSS without success. I've finally succeeded using ALSA and GNOME.
First I installed ALSA according to the Arch wiki.
Next I verified that ALSA detected my sound card(s):
cat /proc/asound/cards

From these two commands, I concluded that I have 2 sound cards (important later on) and that my HDMI sound card was card 1 (NVidia) and that it had 4 possible devices (3,7,8, and 9). To determine which device must be used, I ran the following command for each device (for example, to test card X and device Y, use' plughw:X,Y'):
aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav -D plughw:1,7
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono
I tried each device and got the best sound from device 7 (8 and 9 also worked, device 3 gave static...).
Now, since I had 2 sound cards, I needed to change the default ALSA device. My default ALSA device was card 0 (the Intel card), which wasn't plugged in, so I needed to change the default card to be card 1 (the HDMI card). After reading the ALSA FAQ, I found that modifying /usr/share/alsa.conf should work, though modifying /etc/asound.conf should have also worked. For whatever reason, I couldn't get my modifications to /etc/asound.conf to work, so I edited /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf. In the "# defaults" section I replaced the following:
defaults.ctl.card NVidia
defaults.pcm.card NVidia
defaults.pcm.device 7
I opted to use the key NVidia rather than the card number (1) since I've read in numerous places that the card index can change unexpectedly after a reboot/update. The key can be checked with cat /proc/asound/cards as shown above.
After this, I reloaded ALSA (/etc/rc.d/alsa restart) and verified that the sound worked through the default channel:
aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav -D default
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono
Finally, I rebooted, chose the HDA NVidia (ALSA Mixer) option from gnome-volume-control, and loaded a movie in gnome-mplayer. I was pleased to hear crystal clear sound with functioning volume control

No variable audio output for Cisco CHS 435HDC set top box.
Background: Until the other day I had my stb connectected to a TV, using TV sound, with an HDMI cable. The P265v2 remote volume control changed the TV volume. No problems.
My new TV & home theater system was recently installed. We don't use the TV speakers. While my first preference was to program the Verizon remote to change the volume on my Onkyo receiver, this did not appear to be an option on the remote's programming instruction page on the Verizon website. Instead, I am directed to change a setting on the remote that makes the Verizon remote change the stb output volume vs the tv volume. I changed the setting on the remote and ensured the stb box was set up for "variabe" audio output.
Problem: Using the stb variable audio settings, volume settings 1 through 30 produce the same volume. (Volume setting 0 produces no volume, as one would hope.) It appears the "variable" setting isn't producing a variable output as it should be on this unit.
Thinking that maybe the receiver was complicating the sitation, I tried connecting the stb to the old TV and the new TV directly and had the same results.
Now, while I am watching TV, I need to have the receiver remote at hand in addition to the Verizon remote. It would be nice to have the volume be adjustable as it should be while using the Verizon remote. I don't like the idea of using a seperate universal remote because then I would lose some of the functionality that the Verizon remote provides when watching TV, using the DVR, watching on demand, etc.
I would like to know if this is a problem just with my unit, or if it exists with all of these units, which would hopefully be fixed with a Cisco/Verizon firmware update soon, hopefully.

In order to control the volume on your home theater system, you'll need a FiOS TV Universal Remote that has the 4-buttons on the top for 'DVD', 'Aux'iliary, 'TV' and 'STB'. The audio receiver would have to be programmed into the FIOS TV Remote, and controlled using the 'Aux'iliary button.
Verizon's 4-Button Universal Remote Controls are available for purchase:
a) online via www.verizon.com/fiosaccessories
OR

Presently, the default remotes for new set top boxes are the 2-button P-265 (newer version) remotes.

Digital Audio output for W series - Alternatives
There's a thread talking about the displayport does not have audio-output. Its true and some people get victimized by ill-trained sales people who think their displayport is standard. There's no literature on Lenovo website warning users about the audio issue either - such thread is closed with the fact that (some) other manufacturers in the same period does have have audio either and Lenovo think they should be in the same boat.
Let's not go into the blamish again, but discuss what we can do with existing options with alternative digital audio out and line-in that the W series really really missed.
We have (1) mini-dock and (2) USB soundcard listed as options
I currently use a USB DAC (digital to analog) system and it do really good in terms of stereo music enjoyment. However my particular system does not have digital manupilated sound like 3-D surround or multi-channel output and not suprisely, laptop USB generally produce greater latency than desktop USB ports.
Besides USB, we have 1394 and express card 34 as expansion options.
What's your setup for digital audio out? Anyone know any internal soundcard that fits the slots of Wireless USB/Turbo memory PCI ports that all W-series have?Other alternatives include
I know on mackbooks I've seen firewire used as an input for a Weiss Dac if you're into two channel audio. Do any reiceivers take firewire as an input for hometheater? Has anyone tested Firewire outputs on their W series? I'm told that firewire is sometimes preferable to USB, I'm not sure why this would be, can USB support passthrough of DTS encoded signals?
In the case that firewire works and you Do not have a firewire source, maybe something like this would be of value It converts firewire to digital coaxial s/pdif and allows passthrough of DTS and AC3.

As I'm into audio the critical thing here (and what you're paying for when you purchase blue-ray, is maintaining the digital information from the disk in an unconverted form. You want a direct bit pass through, and you want as little jitter introduced to the signal as possible. You most certainly don't want the sound card getting in the way, Digtital to Analog converting and then reverse packaging it up and putting it out over the soundcard digital out. My problem is I'm not familiar enough with computer audio to know how exactly the sounds is transmitted from your blue ray drive to the digital interface you've chosen.
Anyone know why USB digital out would not be a prefered method?

Ipad Mini Retina (with Airplay)
Beamer without proper audio output (picobeamer)
Bose Soundtouch (with Airplay)
Apple TV (3rd Gen)
When I stream a video via the Ipad, I either have the sound on my Soundtouch or Video via the beamer. Is there an option to have both at same moment? It really looks like I cannot have both at the same moment?
