Audio output question...

Hello,
Hoping someone can help guide me on the most efficent way to deal with the following scenario. I have a late 2008 alum macbook that I am using as my primary home computer. I have a toslink optical out to my DTS decoder stereo receiver so that I can enjoy 5.1 dts sound from itunes and other sources. However, I also have Bose companion 2 desktop speakers that I would like to easily be able to toggle between for sound output from my Mac (for example, when my stereo reciever is otherwise occupied with television or other sound, I'd like to be able to use the desktop speakers simultaneously without having to unplug the mini-toslink from my headphone jack and switching it with the bose headphone jack. I'm looking for a way to have both the toslink and the bose sperakers hooked up to my mac at the same time. Any recommendations on how best to accomplish this??
Is there a better or easier scenario than the following? Will this scenario even work?
Get a USB 2.0 external digital sound output card (like creative soundblaster) to use for the itunes to stereo DTS decoder receiver and use the built-in headphone jack exclusively for the Bose speakers?
Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated!
Matt

  • Digital audio output question

Right now I have my Mini's audio output connected to my amp with a stereo mini jack. But as I understand it the audio out jack can also accept a digital (toslink) connector. There is surprisingly little documentation on exactly how this works or what cables are needed. Anyone care to enlighten me?
    Thanx

    Hi David,
Many people use the toslink optical audio cable.
    There are different brands available.
I purchased several of these when they were on sale from Apple.

Note the tip adapter in the second and third photo.
This adapter lets you plug the cable into the audio out jack for the digital audio out portion.

  • Optical audio output questions

    Concerning the optical digital out:
    (A) If something's connected to this port, does doing so disable audio through the HDMI output?
    (B) Someone in an Apple store said that the optical out is 'only' for 5.1 systems. Is this correct? I wanted to connect it to a stereo D>A converter.

    sevoflurane wrote:
If you disable the option in the audio settings menu to output Dolby Digital, then the optical output will deliver a bog standard PCM output as decoded by a typical stereo component with a D/A converter, irrespective of source material. If this option is enabled, then Dolby Digital material will be output by the ATV via the optical out and will only produce audio if the amplifier has a Dolby Digital decoder.
I assumed this would be true, too. So I connected my ATV to a Vizio Soundbar that only allows stereo digital input with it's to slink connector, and I can't get audio to play through it. I've tried disabling Dolby in the settings. I've also tried different source material, including streaming music to it via both iTunes and airplay.
I have confirmed that the output works with a Dolby Digital decoder I have in my stereo in the other room. Also, stereo audio plays through the HDMI port when I try connecting to another TV.
So far, all of my tests imply that the Apple TV can't output stereo digital through the optical port.

  • Help, basic question, no audio output?

I have a Mac Pro running latest version of Logic Pro. I'm not new to audio software (come from a Cakewalk background on the Windows platform), but I'm relatively new to Mac Pro and Logic Pro.
I seem unable to get any audio output from my setup when using a Logic Midi Track (i.e. GM Device Piano).
    My hardware:
    Mac Pro
M-Audio Axiom 25 Keyboard/controller (connected via USB to Mac Pro)
MOTU UltraLite (connected via FireWire to Mac Pro)
M-Audio ProjectMix I/O (connected via FireWire to Mac Pro)
I can bring up the Loop Browser and play loops and place loops in the Arrange view but I can't seem to use my USB/MIDI M-Audio Keyboard to generate any Audio via the Motu.
Also, I can see the Midi events in the Logic Transport Window.
If I load up garageband the M-Audio & Motu Ultralite work just fine, so I'm confused as to what I'm not doing right in Logic Pro? It must be something really basic I'm missing.
Sorry for such a basic lame question, but I'm stumped!
    Thanks, Rob.

well of course there is no official word on when an update to logic will arrive with a significant GUI overhaul. personally I hope that such a step is taken carefully.. this software is the backbone of many people's working life, so and big changes to the interface are hopefully being considered and integrated carefully.
I'd hope that a major overhaul to the logic UI won't just be cosmetic. there is a lot of legacy code left over from emagic days that do not make use of the latest OSX technology and so are not optimised. an example - look at how slow the screenset changes are. there is always a delay in response time to when you change a screenset, in some cases this can actually be slower than it was on older machines running OS9. as far as I can tell this is because it's all part of some custom graphics code in logic and doesn't make use of OSX quartz and probably not the graphics card effectively either. as a comparison, look at how incredibly responsive exposé is. it always seems to stay that responsive regardless of CPU load, so there has got to be a way to make the GUI features of logic perform just as snappily as the system ones.
same goes for the painful, annoying delay in mouse click response time, which is worse since OSX than it was under os9. a rewrite of logic's UI will hopefully sort this problem out too.
these things may seem like irrelevant nitpicks, but trust me, when you become a power user and you are cutting audio and throwing parts of your arrangement around like nobody's business, the sticky slow response of the GUI really penalises you.

  • Question from the After Effects team about audio output

When you render and export a composition from After Effects that does not have audio content, do you ever enable audio output intentionally (thus creating an empty audio track in the output file)?
If so, why, and what formats do you use?
We're in the process of making some improvements to how audio is handled, and we want to make sure that we haven't broken any common workflows.
(Note: If you're not sure about how to enable audio output, see this page: "FAQ: Why is there no sound (audio) in my output file?" )

For me, I can't think of a common use-case where that would be necessary. I suppose there are times when you want a file to conform to an existing structure, such as when you want to replace media in Premiere, and the new file needs to have the same number of audio tracks as the old file (which you may not have created). Even though that hardly ever happens (I remember replacing proxies when CS3 got the ability to import P2 footage... it was... not very cooperative), I wouldn't want to lose the ability to arbitrarily export an empty audio track, because I'm sure there are other edge cases which I can't think of. But, I wouldn't mind losing it as a default behavior.
It sounds like what you're hinting at is a feature where the render module detects whether there is any audio in the comp before committing to some kind of default audio track export setting. If there is no audio in the comp (or if all the audio in a comp is disabled), it wouldn't export an audio track.
As long as there is a setting to override this behavior (i.e.: enabled / if detected / disabled) that can be built into an export preset, I'd love such a feature.
I, too, often forget to turn on audio export, because most of my comps don't use audio (I sync audio in Premiere, usually) and I don't like having empty audio tracks I don't need. But in the rare cases I do need audio, it's really annoying to go back and re-export the audio because I forgot to turn it on (similar to forgetting to enable an alpha channel, which makes me feel really stupid).

  • How to connect Digital Optical Audio output iMac with Receiver Input

I have connected iMac with onkyo hts-3300 home theater system receiver through optical audio TosLink Cable.( http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Optical-Audio-TosLink-Cable/dp/B001ZU3G2I/ref=sr12?ie=UTF8&qid=1292865309&sr=8-2 ). Unfortunately there is no sound coming out from the Home theater system. I have verified the Receiver optical input is working fine by connecting with my TV optical audio digital out put and the it's working great. The only difference between TV and iMac is, on my TV, it has optical audio digital output and I can use this cable (http://www.amazon.com/Tripp-Lite-A102-02M-Digital-connectors/dp/B0002WPREU/ref=s r11?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1297320792&sr=1-1) to make it work. I can also verified my optical audio TosLink Cable working because I can see the red light coming out from the cable. So the only problem could be from iMac. I doubt I need to change the additional setting to configure iMac to use external optical audio setting instead of the buit in audio setting. Hoe can I able to do it? or my iMac(IMAC 21.5"/3.06/2X2GB/500GB/9400M-ITP
MB950ZP/A) doesn't support optical digital audio out put? I have follow this thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12769423&#12769423 and to my surprise which doesn't work out for me. I doubt that i need to change some setting, but when I got to setting>> sound I cannot change any setting. I was quite depressed aldy. Can someone answer my question as i m a newbie here. Thanks a lot

Thank you very much for your reply.
@Király : May i know how to Open Audio Midi Setup? Is this Audio Midi Setup is in the locatated in the Setting in Mac Snow Leapord OS? or how to locate this "Audio Midi Setup " in Mac enviroment. Is it possible to open this Audio Midi Setup in windows 7 enviroment also? I Just want to get the audio from my iMac in Hts-3300 onkyo home theatre. YOur help is much appreciated
@rkaufmann87 : Thank you very much for your sharing about this http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/ connection. for me what i understand is the digital audio output in airportexpress is the same as the audio out put in iMac in terms of details sepcs. So this airportexpress will only help you connect wirelessly to home theatre system, rather than waired connection. Other than that nothig much difference. So there is no point for me to spend extra bucks to attain the wireless connection. Unless the airportexpress have optical digital input, which i believe not. Correct me if I m worng, thanks

  • No Audio Output after Upgrading to windows 7; Soundblaster Card is installed

After upgrading to Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit), I found that my speakers (which are built into my HP w2207 monitor) are not recognized.  In the notification area I have the speaker with a red x in it, and it says “No Audio Output Device is installed”.
I have a HP Pavilion D4890Y with the Sound Blaster Audigy X-FI 24-Bit Xtreme sound card.  I tried looking in Device Manager, and found “Multimedia Audio Controller” under Other, which states no drivers could be found.
I tried following some of the advice online, and downloaded the latest Realtek High Definition Audio drivers, but and the download seems to run successfully, but I don’t notice any differences.  When I reboot as prompted, I’ve still got the same error.
I then tried forcing the Audio Device to use a Realtek driver, but Windows protests (saying it’s not sure it’s compatable with my device, and I end up with “Realtek High Definition Audio” under “Sound, video and game controllers”, but it has a yellow exclamation point.  If I click properties, the device status says “This device cannot start (Code 10).” If I try to update the driver I get the message that it cannot find the driver software.   If I uninstall the driver I’m back to the original problem (multimedia audio controller under original devices, with no known drivers).
I also tried downloading various files from the Creative site, but it’s not clear which one to use, and the 4 or 5 different ones I tried (including their recommended beta version for Windows 7), when each of them opens it says it can’t find any supported devices.
    Suggestions?  Thanks!

    Hi,
"If the driver is a previous revision install it using the TROUBLESHOOT COMPATIBILITY tool that is part of the Windows 7 OS.
To use the tool, uninstall any drivers for the sound card you show listed in Control Panel/Programs/Uninstall Programs  list.  Delete the Device from Device Manager.
Download the revision of the driver from www.creative.com  website to a folder you've created and placed on your desktop.
After the driver is downloaded, navigate to the "setup.exe" of the driver and Right Click - select Troubleshoot Compatibility  ----
Let the compatibility tool select a possible solution then use its suggestion of TRY RECOMMENDED WINDOWS SETTINGS, if it does not find a solution it will submit only CUSTOMIZE SETTINGS and let you install it as you designate."
The preceding information comes from a Microsoft Windows 7 forum regarding an issue similar to yours.
the information you provided did verify that it is a sound blaster XiFi Extreme card as checked against the Vendor / Device list.

  • Audio output unavailable

    MBP 2011 running Lion.
Have been suffering on various front since I upgraded (in reality it feels like more of a downgrade) to Lion.
Latest and most annoying problem is the fact that the only audio output I have available is Digital out.
Great if I want plug into my home HiFi, not so good for just about the other 90% of the time I need to hear anything from my MBP.
Has anyone else had this issue and found a workaround?
I think the biggest question really is why would Apple launch a product soo in need of work?
Many thanks for any help with this issue.

This problem actually has to do with more than waking-up issues. Sometimes the interface goes silent just when Logic is put in the background for awhile. Regarding the necessity for restarting-after-wake to keep things going, I can't recall ever having a problem similar to this since the days of OS9, and I  work daily with Logic and many other audio apps. My firewire interfaces (Presonus and other) have been solidly reliable upon waking.

  • Why is my left audio output not working, when I have brand new headphones? (6th Generation Ipod Nano)

I have recently been having problems with my Ipods audio output... The Left headphone puts out No sound at all... I am positive it is not my headphones... Any solutions or is it a harware problem??
Hope to hear Back ASAP thanks

iPod Nano Touch? (I must have missed the announcement of that model of iPod!)
Regardless of which model of iPod you have (and if it's a Nano, why submit your question to the Touch forum?), some car charging devices charged iPods via the firewire line, which was fine for the first iPods on the market. Some later iPods charged by firewire or USB. New iPods do not have firewire and cannot be charged by firewire. They only charge by USB
So perhaps your old iPod (again, whichever model it is) charged by fireware.

  • Audio Output in 5.1?

My reports on how to import and export video with 5.1 channel audio in Premiere Elements without export error go back a long way (blog wise to April 2013). Consequently, it was discouraging in July 2014 to discover that the message had not reached some advanced as well as beginner users of the program at some other forums.
"Premiere Elements will support the import, but not the export, of Dolby Digital 5.1 channel audio. For Dolby Digital, the user is left with Stereo (2 channel) option for export to file or disc. But the program does allow for some very limited opportunities for export to file for 5.1 channel with AAC instead of the Dolby Digital codec. However, the latter errors out at export with the following message
The source and output audio channels are not compatible or a conversion does not exist.
unless a project preset (New Project Dialog) was selected for the project that has 5.1 channel incorporated into its sqpreset file in the Program Files"
The export findings were extended to include a Windows Media Audio 10 Professional 5.1 channel audio as well as the AAC 5.1.
The details are found in the following blog posts along with some commentary on explorations and experimentation on how possibly to import stereo and get out 5.1 channel from a Premiere Elements project. (See the Discussion in the second of the 3 links below.) The blog posts are free (no ads and no registration, just my observations as I work with Premiere Elements). Please give them a look to determine if they work for you as they have worked for me and others.

    Hi alece,
    Just to clarify something;
When using an optical cable there are several standards of audio that can pass through the cable:
    S/PDIF - a stereo signal - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spdif
    AC3 or Dolby Digital - up to 5.1 surround - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ac3
Dolby Digital Plus - up to 7.1 surround - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DolbyDigitalPlus
ADAT Optical - up to 8 channels of audio - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ADAT_Lightpipe
MADI - up to 64 channels of audio - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MADI
I´m sure other people can add more to the list if they want to, my point is that these signals can pass through the exact same kind of optical cable.
The important bit to know is what does your equipment and software support... in theory your question is quite logical, a software can play 5.1 surround to a optical output like Apple DVD Player does with the built-in sound card of a modern mac. However, Logic does not support live encoding of AC3. That is why you have to output the surround mix in Logic to a sound card with at least 6 channels (5+1 as in 5.1) connected to your speaker system. Typically this would be 5 active studio monitors plus a sub. If you were thinking to use an existing stereo I would not recommend it since most consumer speakers have no limiters to protect them from damage (but may be possible depending on your amplifiers inputs)
I hope this answered your question
    Cheers Espen

I want to use a FM radio app to Airplay music through my Apple TV (by using the synchronizing function). Works, but after some minutes, the Airplay audio output setting switches back to iPad. Why? Solution?
Why don't use iTunes? Because this just needs to many handling in order to get it where i want it (in general, this whole idea of doing everything online just works likes... ). An app is easier (that's why it is invented).

  • Simultanious audio output from both mini Displayport and Audio Output port?

    Hey guys,
I was wondering if someone who already has audio+video output through the mini displayport set up can be so kind and answer the following questions for me:
Can audio be output simultaniously from 3.5mm audio port as well as the mini displayport? That is, if I output both video and audio to my reciever through the 2010 iMac's mini Diplayport, can i use the standard audio output port to provide line input for a further set of (active) speakers (analog would be fine)?
In the case both outputs CANNOT work simultaniously, which one will work if i have both plugged in? If the mini displayport has higher rank (or priority or what whatever i should call the one that works when both outputs are plugged in), and the reciever it is plugged into is switched off, will audio automatically switch to the standard audio port? Same question goes if the standard audio output port has higher rank/priority?
    Many thanks in advance!
Just in case you are wondering why the heck i would wanna do that, here's some background:
I am planning on setting up my new 27' iMac on a 'work' desk in my bedroom, where i can comfortably sit and work on the computer as well as use the beautiful screen as my bedroom TV. Since i also wanna use my mac for all my living room multimedia needs (movies, tv shows, music, etc), i plan on running a long (15m) audio+video HDMI cable all the way up to my reciever in my living room. Furthermore, i am also planning on running a USB cable to the living room (through something of this sort: http://www.coolgear.com/images/171632pro.jpg) plugged in to a usb hub mainly for mouse/keyboard availability in the living room, but also for other things such as external hard drives and so on. The problem is that, apart from having my audio play in the living room, i also want to provide line input to my reference monitors that will be located at the iMac desk and i obviously much prefer i get the line input directly from the mac rather than running a third cable from reciever back to the speakers.

    Anyone?
Is that so few people are using the new mini displayport for audio, or did i ask the wrong way?
Help will be greatly appriciated as i need this info in order to plan my purchases!

  • No Audio Out Of Headphone Or External Audio Output Jacks

We have a Rev. B Bondi iMac that I recently put in my wife's 4th grade classroom for her to use. When trying to hook up external speakers I discovered there is no audio output from the side audio output jack or the front two headphone jacks when listening to the CD player. (I also checked using headphones)
The internal speakers sound fine and normal. I do hear something very distorted and weak from the external audio output jacks but it is so distorted the only way I can tell it is coming from the CD player is by pausing its playing. I have been into OS X now for about 15 months and am starting to forget everything I knew of OS 8.6 which is in the Bondi.
I checked the sound portion of the Monitors and Sound Control panel and all seems set correctly. Is there some other setting that I have forgotten? Any ideas/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
    TIA

    Herb Mesler...
Other than exercising the jack-ports with a plug from a headphone, it may need some expensive repair. However I do have a trick for you to try first.
    Here is my trick;
Computer must be off! Because there is some light voltage applied to the ports they can slightly arch, spoiling the trick. Arching is the root cause of electrical resistance thus not allowing for proper contact and sound will not pass through to the device.
Next take a plug "softly and full travel" through each port in the side and on the front. I repeat them about 5 times. (any proper spec/type of plug, like from a headphone can work. If it from something that is powered, like from speakers, do not use it)
Boot up the computer and test by avoiding the side ports, using only the front ports. Quite frankly I found the use of the side ports to be somewhat the cause of the problem. Mine has been taped off for about 6 years now and I never have had to repeat my trick to date.
Give it a try and post back if there is any questions. Also, I would like to hear your results.
