Audio Pans Left on Import

Every time I import a clip into Final Cut Pro 7 I notice (upon opening the corresponding audio in the Viewer) that the clip is set to "-1" (for panning) as opposed to "0". It doesn't matter if it's material I shot with my own camera or downloaded stock footage, it's always imported with a "-1" pan. Obviously I can reset each clip's pan settings, but I shouldn't have to. Does anyone know how to get FCP to import with clip volume centered? Is there a System Preference I'm overlooking?
Thanks so much!

Audio recorded in stereo will display as panned to the left in the viewer. This is because there are 2 channels and it is only listing one of them. If you open the Audio Mixer (Option - 6) you will see both channels, one is panned to the left and one is panned to the right.

  • Built-In Audio Panning L&R malfunctions, system prefs.

I have noticed on my own Mac, as well as my peers' computers which include iBooks, PowerMacs, iMacs, and even a new MacBook pro, that the audio coming from the Built-in audio card will randomly be panned completely to the right, or the left.
A quick troubleshoot will lead you to find that in the system preferences the panning slider is set to the right or left, an undesirable setting.
All of the computers I mentioned are running the latest updated versions of Tiger, 10.4.6, and with the exception of my self running Pro Tools, none of the other computers mentioned are running any third party audio interfaces/cards or software that uses audio other than the applications included with Tiger: iTunes, iChat, Quicktime, Safari, etc.
Unfortunately there is no Lock in the audio system preferences, which could potentially be a quick fix to the problem because if an application like iChat had a bug which caused audio panning, the lock in system prefs. would prevent that..
    I am quite boggled.
    question:
What might be causing this, and is there a solution?

Thanks for the response guys. It seems we're in the same boat.
The problem is intermittent on my machine . It has occurred three times since I bought it. The fist time it lasted for a day and a half. I rang Apple support and went through a number of steps until the P-RAM suggestion which seemed to fix it. A few days later it disappeared again and resetting the P-RAM had no effect. My wife continued to use the computer (without sound) and some hours later it came back after a restart (she only restarted it because she is in the habit of shutting down instead of using sleep). The problem occurred again. That time I restarted the machine a number of times, with and without the external speakers plugged in, with them turned on and off etc. This had no effect. I gave up. Some time later my wife went to use the computer and it came back. I now believe that the P-RAM solution that seemed to fix the problem the first time was just a coincidence.
I rang Apple support again and they gave me the following steps (A,B & C of which I went through the first time the problem occurred):
A: Log in through another account and see if it had the same problem.
    - The built-in audio was still missing.
B: Run the disk utility on the hard drive (after booting from installation DVD).
    - There were nil problems on the HD, but it did not fix the problem.
    C: Reset the P-RAM.
    - This worked the first time though it has not worked on subsequent re-occurrences of the problem.
    D: Do an Archive Reinstall.
    - I did this today; though the built-in audio was working, I just wanted to complete the suggestions the Apple support person gave me. The problem has not reoccurred yet, but it has only been a few hours. I will be using the computer as much as possible tonight to see if the problem reoccurs.
If the problem reoccurs I'll be taking the machine in for warranty repairs, or better still replacement.

  • No audio from left track

Hi, I am working in FCEHD. The left track of my project has no audio. Is there a way to copy the right track and "paste" it to the left track or make the project mono so I get sound from both speakers? The audio is voice only. Advice would be appreciated!

Is there audio on one track only? If so you can either double the track, which isn't always a good idea as you can get phase errors. Another way is to delete the useless track and then center the remaining track Modify>Audio>Pan Center or Control-period.

  • Converted Project to CC 2014 mono audio panned.

I've just downloaded the PPCC2014 update but it has incorrectly interpreted all my mono files in my sequence as panned-left, when in the project previously pan was ignored in the mono files.
How can I ignore or remove panning from all the audio files in my sequence, without having to map to stereo? (Which is time-consuming and cluttered).
    Cheers,
    James

    Yes, Pluraleyes 3.
When they originally came through from Pluraleyes there was an issue with them also, but because it was at the beginning of the project I could easily swap out each clip simply by revealing in Finder and dragging the file into the timeline from Finder. But now I have a 3 hour assemble.
When I reveal in project, the mono audio files are not panned. So I can simply match frame and overwrite the timeline clip (thanks to PPCC2014's new Match Framing behaviour it's only a 2 key combination). But I'm not sure why the problem happened in the first place, and it would be easier if you could just remove panning, but when I go to remove effects "panning" is not one of them.
    Cheers,
    James

  • When I pan left, the volume is turned down instead of being panned left???

When I pan left, the volume is turned down instead of being panned left???
The instrument strip and output 1-2 are both in stereo in my environment. I don't get it-any ideas anyone?
    I'm using logic 7.2.3
    Thanx in advance
    !

    Thanks for your response.
hrmmm..... I don't see any "Pan Law". I'm running Logic 7.2.3 btw.
I think it might be my audio drivers.
"I have a FW 410 interface, everything seems to work fine except for the panning. Instead of panning properly, the volume is turned down when I pan left and volume is raised when I pan right. This only happens when I have the FW 410 interface selected in the audio/hardware setup. Panning under the built-in audio works fine so I would imagine it's the M-Audio drivers for the FW 410 that need a working update for Leopard."
    Can anyone confirm this?
    Thanx again in advance,

  • Audio panning slider actionscript coding ???

    Hello,
I am currently stuck. I am making an audio mixer interface in flash cs6 and with a play/stop button and a volume slider but I am now looking to add a panning left and right slider. However, I have looked throughout the Internet and can not find a tutorial for the actionscript coding. I am using actionscript 3.0.
I am looking to use a slider found already integrated in the software. If anyone can give me a link, templates, snippets or coding. Any guidance would be great help.
    Thanks

Here's an example file that should help: http://www.ddg-designs.com/downloads/volumePan.zip
The basics are very simple: In the volume control, you are using the ratio of the sliding control's horizontal position to the total distance that it can slide. To achieve this you set the registration point of the constraining line at its left end. In the pan control you set the registration at the center of the constraining line and this gives you a positive number to the right and a negative number to the left for that ratio.

  • Audio pan slider is missing in Inspector

On a 17" MacBook Pro with Yosemite 10.1 and FCPX 10.1.4, I am working with some audio that needs to be panned left and right. In the Audio Inspector, I click the drop down for Pan Mode, select "Stereo Left/Right" but there is no pan slider. Any thoughts on how to return the pan slider? Is this a bug?

  • Lion Installed: Internal speakers muted and cannot be adjusted thru the audio pane.

I installed Lion yesterday and spent considerable time looking for an online solution to no avail.
The online info suggests to re-install the OS from the disk supplied with the laptop, but would be re-installing Snow Leopard... mmm
The quick fix is the plug headphones into the audio jack and wait a few seconds. The audio pane becomes active as it should. Remove the
    headphones... the audio functions normally.
If you turn the laptop off... you must repeat the process until a future release of Lion.

Same problem here: I cannot control audio volume and Preference Panel said I've not an audio out device. the funny thing is that I can hear music from iTunes.
I've tried also to reset PRAM.

  • Audio Pans Grayed Out

    Hey everyone,
My audio pans are grayed out, not sure why. I never encountered this problem before and wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to un-gray them.
    Thanks,
    Rob

To get audio from my pans I use Calphalon cookware...sorry
I'm not clear on what you're asking about (ie panning from the timeline, panning from the Audio mixer).
What I can suggest though is double clicking the audio track to launch it in the viewer where you will have a great deal of control with your pans.

A small update to this issue....
I have been trawling the forums to find an answer but to no avail...
And... I've tried exporting and bouncing individual stems and the full session, either by muting all bar the stem or soloing the stem.....and still nothing.
Same problems.....everything is audible in audition but nothing plays on playback.
Since the 'prelisten' channel strip is Solo safe this would indicate that you have a track or channel strip soloed somewhere else, out of sight. Are the Mute buttons on your channel strips blinking?
To view all objects in your mixer, click the button. You may have to scroll sideways to check the whole mixer.

  • Variable bit rate audio assets cannot be imported

Extracted some ac3 files from personal content DVDs I authored and burned myself (using DVDSP) to make a compilation. When I try to import these 5.1 ac3 assets, DVDSP is refusing stating: "Variable bit rate audio assets cannot be imported." These ac3 files play fine in QuickTime and other programs that handle ac3 files.

  • There is not enough disk space left to import

I am in the middle of editing a movie. I have imported two clips and am trying to import a third.
I have precisely 62.42Gigabytes of hard disk space (I have a 120 Gig HD). The clip I want to import is 1.69 Gigabytes.
    I get the following message:
    Error during Import
The file could not be imported: There is not enough disk space left to import...
I tried moving the project to another account on the same computer but that did not work either.
I have searched through these forums and many others seem to have the same problem but I have yet to find ANY workable solution!
    HELP please!

The clip I want to import is 1.69 Gigabytes.
By any chance, is the "clip" a compressed QuickTime movie? If so, when iMovie converts it to DV a 1.69GB movie may expand quite a lot. Please describe the clip.
And describe the disk the project resides on. Is it an internal disk or external disk?
Here's some things to check out...

  • External Audio recording to be imported & used in FCE

    Hi there,
I am thinking of using this audio interface to record some vocals. It is a Focusrite Saffire 6 USB. It comes with a software called Ableton Live that can record the sound in wav or aiff format.
    http://www.focusrite.com/products/audiointerfaces/saffire_6usb
According to this spec, it uses a *24bit 96kHz a/d covertor*.
    http://www.htfr.com/more-info/MR326826
    +TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS:+
+2 channel USB audio & MIDI recording interface+
    *+24bit 96kHz a/d & d/a converters+*
I am using a standard defintion miniDV tape video camera and in my FCE, in the Easy setup, I have selected DV-PAL 32kHZ Amorphic.
My question is, will the sound recorded using this Focusrite Saffire audio interface be imported into FCE4 for editing together to mix together with my video clips (recorded in my standard defintion video camera) ?
    Thanks you.
    Cheers

    QUESTION 1:
I also discovered something strange when I check the settings of all the previous video & audio clips imported into FCE4. Those that imported in from video camera, the values are 16 bit 32 kHz (How come ? My video camera is set to 12 bit 32 kHz)
Despite the material is recorded in 32 bit, the capture process with 48kHz setting are allowed, but on long shot, you can expect a audio drift from video if sequence's audio is not the same as original sources.
    QUESTION 2:
Then, I look into all the audio clips I bought from iTunes & imported into FCE4, they are all listed as 16 bit 48 kHz.
The funny thing is that both these type of different clips (ie, 16bit/32kHz & 16bit/48kHz) can be rendered without problem. How come ? FCE4 can mix clips of different audio types ?
BTW, importing iTune purchased song into FCE is prohibited by iTune EUA. Any non-natively supported media can be rendered in FCE, but as explained in question 1, you can expect audio drift on long clip. This problem is not relevant with music track audio which is it not part of a video footage.
    QUESTION 3:
If I set the Ableton software output to 16bit 48 kHz, does that mean that I actually cannot make use of the hardware abilities to produce sound of 24 bit 96 kHz ? Is there much difference ?
96 kHz is used for professionnal multi-track audio editing. You have to use high-end audio monitors to ear the difference... if you can. Usually only audio engineers can ear the difference.
Audio CD use 44 kHz and the quality is pristine on hi-fi deck. 48 kHz is the standard in video production and even used in dolby 5.1 home theater configuration.
    QUESTION 4:
In the Easy Setup, I cannot find 16 bit 48 kHz. I only have the following option in the Easy Setup of FCE4:
    a) DV-PAL
    b) DV-PAL 32 kHz
    c) DV-PAL 32 kHz Anamorphic
    d) DV-PAL 32 kHz Anamorphic Basic
    e) DV-PAL 32 kHz FireWire Basic
    f) DV-PAL Anamporphic
    g) DV-PAL Anamorphic Basic
    h) DV-PAL DV Convertor
    i) DV-PAL FireWire Basic
So, which one do I chose ?
    Use DV-PAL.
