Audio podcast sound quality bad

Hi, I'm producing a podcast that's all vocal. I compressed the half hour long show to mp3 with the standard vocal podcast (which has a bitrate of 96). The sound quality for the voices is pretty bad. It sounds like we have lisps. The s sounds get muffled out. I tried doing an mp3 compression at 160kbps and it sounds a bit better but I don't think I need to be compressing it with such a high bitrate. Is there anything that I might be missing? Thanks in advance.

Have you tried to export it without compression, just to check if it maybe sounds bad by itself? E.g., when you're clipping the levels, you might not hear it in GB, but in the exported audio file.

• MacBook Pro 13" Audio Output sound quality terrible after Lion upgrade

Hi guys,
I have recently upgraded my 2011 MBP 13 to Lion, and ever since have had terrible audio out sound quality, i.e. it is 'grainy' and full of feedback - very unpleasant to listen to.
Is anyone else in the same boat and does anyone have the solution to my problem?
Thanks,
Sam

Sorry for the late reply, yes mine does does recover but I still think it is the same issue with different levels of severity.  This is a guess but possibly my higher spec Retina MacBook Pro can work its way through the issue where your 13" MBP can't or can't in a reasonable amount of time.
I have also thought that it is related to window server and was wondering if someone else would bring it up as semi-confirmation since 2 people would have to came to the same conclusion, yes I am weird you don't have to tell me.  I am thinking it is possibly related to the lower priority for background apps; it gets caught thinking every window is in the background, chokes, and does not know what to do which is why the cursor will still move since it never gets "backgrounded".  As for the caps lock, it is pretty much hardware based which is why we can have a virtual machine not read the caps lock on someimes if it is turned on when the VM is started.
I wish Apple would have more testers so things like this would not slip through.  I see more complaints like this when there are external displays on MacBooks than single display iMacs/Minis.  Something that may not be tested enough since it requires more specific circumstances.
Sorry, I don't know how to restart window server without the terminal.  I would have loved to test the theory since that would answer the question of what is at fault quickly.

• Podcast sound quality comprimised

Hi, I'm producing a podcast and am having an issue with the quality.
I am producing an all audio podcast over Skype where I am hosting and recording into Garageband. During the recording everything sounds great. But when playing it back on Garage band I notice that the S sounds aren't hitting, they are a bit muffled. I take the next step and export the file as an .mp3 as a 'spoken' podcast and using the default settings. The s sounds are even worse. I tried taking the mp3 compression settings to 160kbps and it sounds a bit better but my file is starting to get a little large (twice as big from the default compression setting).
Is there any way of getting the s sounds to sound better without making an enormously huge file?
Thanks for any help.

Thanks for your reply. I also wanted to know if this sounds normal. Is 160kbps too large for an audio podcast? I'm getting 40+ MB for a half hour show and I feel that might be too much for my audience to download. Would I have better luck with AAC?
I know it sounds lame that I'm not doing this myself right now. I am away from my production computer and am trying to find answers before I get to it.
I'll post my website. Episode 001 will remain and has the same compression issue as 002. But I will be re-posting 002 periodically for testing.

• Pandora sound quality bad -- how to add on site to browser

The sound quality for pandora is really bad lately. A new problem. Songs break up routinely, even if I am only wordprocessing on my computer. For their FAQ, they suggest add pandora to my sites, but don't know how to do this -- tried to find a place under tools re: security privacy settings. Not sure if that will fix it.

• In-built mic sound quality bad

I have a macbook pro and use Adobe connect. When I go into audio set up with in-built mic as the chosen device, the sound quality is awful - very pixelated. The mic works fine with Skype & Facetime, but not with Adobe connect. Any suggestions?

hey azay007,
curious to know, does the mic work if you uninstall the current driver and let windows install its generic drivers ?

• AD-42W audio gateway sound quality?

Has anyone tested AD-42W A2DP Audio Gateway?
How good is the sound quality?
I connected nokia 6300 to car audio system through AUX, but the sound quality is worse than using my old portable mp3 player (some hiss noise and sound is not clear enough). So i think of using AD-42W as to reproduce a better signal. Is this possible?

I had the same problem. I don't know what causes it, but I know what fixed it for me:
In your home folder, navigate to the Library > Preferences folder. Remove the following preferences:
com.apple.iTunes.eq.plist
com.apple.iTunes.plist
com.apple.iTunesHelper.plist
Next, go to your home folder's Library > Caches folder. Remove:
QCCompositionRepository-com.apple.iTunes.cache
If you're missing any of these, don't sweat it.
Now, go to your /Applications folder and remove the iTunes application.
You can hold onto your preferences files, but the iTunes app has to go to the trash.
Next, Launch ActivityMonitor. (it's in /Applications/Utilities). Filter the list of running processes for "iTunes". If you see the iTunes Helper, ask it to quit. Once there are no iTunes processes running, empty the trash.
Now, go to http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and download the iTunes installer and reinstall iTunes. When you start it up, your audio should be back normal. While your preferences are gone, your library and playlists should still be intact. If you saved your old preferences, you can try adding them back, but it's probably easier to just change your settings back to the way you had them.
I hope this works for you as well!

• Optical drive sound quality bad?

I recently had a firmware update done to this computer. However I noticed that when I ripped CD's into iTunes the sound quality diminished. There is almost no bass and a lot of highs. I have checked the iPod EQ, the iTunes EQ, OS X sound preferences, my speakers, and my headphones. I also checked the iTunes store purchases I made but they still sound great. Only songs I rip from CD's sound worse only after I updated the firmware. Any suggestions?

There shouldn't be a reason for a firmware update to the drive to cause a quality issue with music you rip. Basically, the drive just reads the data. It can either read it or not, but it won't change it. As A BRODY asked... do you know what bitrate you recorded it at? Perhaps you had changed a setting?

• Podcast sound quality - hiccups when playing

I recently restored my iPod (which had crashed badly) and since then when I play a podcast it will occasionally skip or otherwise be garbled for a split second. It will then continue. Someone else told me (outside this forum) that there were recent problems of this nature, but the only one I can find is where suddenly the audio of a podcast will speed up to 3 or more times normal. But no mention of this "hiccup". Does anyone know of problems like this?

I found the answer to this question in thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2872127&#2872127
I've also reported it to Apple via the Feedback page http://www.apple.com/feedback/ and encourage anyone else who has this problem to do so. The sqeaky wheel gets the oil.

• E430 Fix bad sound quality with Win 7 + Dolby Advanced Audio

Problem:  In Windows 7 x64, sound quality is tinny and sounds very badly DSPed when Dolby Advanced Audio is activated.  Even setting all effects off and EQ off the sound is bad simply because Dolby is/was turned on.  Going to Sound > Playback > Speakers > Properties > Enhancements, checking Disable All Enhancements and clicking Apply clears up the sound, but then the EQ won't have any effect.
Solution:  If you have Win 7 x64, uninstall the Win 7 driver (h0a114ww.exe) and instead install the Windows 8 driver (h0ac10ww.exe).  Note that this is NOT the Win 8.1 driver - that won't install under Win 7.  The sound quality will be way better when you use Dobly EQ and effects.  So far I haven't had any stability problems.
I thought my E430 had the worst sound card ever until I upgraded to Windows 8 and installed the new driver.  I have Windows 7 dual booted and found the sound quality in Win 7 terrible so I played around with it and found the above solution.
Solved!

• Improving sound quality of podcasts

I am having difficulty with the poor sound quality of a podcast. It appears that it was recorded at a relatively low bitrate (if that is the correct term). Is there some way that I can improve the sound quality when downloading, or once downloaded?

I totally agree on the Audacity comment. Unless Vnur made a typo and meant to type Audition (I've done that many times myself). I used Audacity before I got my Creative Cloud subscription and HOLY BANANAS what a difference! Audacity is free...but you get what you pay for. Nice for the temporary solution if cash is tight, but comparitively you CANNOT beat the quality of Audition. Nuff said.
I LOVE all the wonderful advice you gave here, Steve...if I could only understand what you meant! LOL! I apologize in advance. I am SUCH a newb here and still learning! I just got Audition 1 month ago and am learning as I try to produce this podcast. What do you mean by, "sucking out about 6dB at 1.5kHz with a Q factor about 1, using the parametric EQ"? Could you provide a snapshot of the settings, please? I would be forever grateful!
As for the Spectrum Analyzer, I still haven't learned how to use it other than taking out annoying sounds, like a beep, buzz or whistle. Now that you've mentioned it here as a way to help me correct the audio, I'll go to YouTube and see if I can find some videos that could give me a crash course on this tool. Any favorite links would be welcomed and appreciated, though! I just see pretty colors! LOL...I  know...I'm a dork.
Once I learn the language, I'm sure  much of what you've said here will make complete sense. I will most definitely be referring to this post often until I understand what I'm doing.
Thank you!!!

• Wanting sound quality closer to HD caliber. Using gigaworks. Just bought a vid card with hdmi audio

I just got a GTX 560 TI, and my dilemma arose after installing this card and then trying out the HDMI audio, and being amazed at the sound quality I am NOT getting by simply using my sound card. Here are some of my specs which are relevant. I have the said video card, a Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer, a Samsung 40" LCD I use as a monitor, and an Asus P5N motherboard. Also, I am using Creative Gigaworks 7.1 750s speakers. I'm running a mini-hdmi to hdmi cable from my card to TV. Basically I am hearing sound quality from my TV that is absolutely superior to anything that has come out of my speakers and am now wanting to achieve better sound quality for my speakers, but how? Should I get a Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty? New speakers is definitely not what I am looking for right now, and besides that, they are a very powerful set of 7.1's that you just can't find anymore. I know there are HDMI sound cards, but I doubt I would be able to plug my speakers into those. Is there better software I can download to go along with my sound card? I've updated PowerDVD on the off-chance that it would help (even though I knew it wouldn't). I'm really not sure how much help getting a fatal1ty sound card would be. Any suggestions on how to get my PC speakers running up to or NEAR to HD quality?

$200 at all? So no new sound card? Or 200 for receiver only? So following setups are possible using a receiver:
- Use SB, Receiver: so you connect from SB analog to Receiver and from their analog to Speakers, use HDMI/DVI for video seperately. IMHO Bad as it uses much analog points and would have bad sound quality. As long as you don't buy a quality SB, real good analog cables, good receiver. And so we speek over 1000$
- Use GPU and Receiver directly via HDMI. Then Analog to Speakers and HDMI/DVI to TV. No real extra SB needed, but be aware that if you got an nvidia card it may be you need to connect the sound via SPDIF - check: . But as SPDIF only provides 1,5Mbit/s (6Mbit/s in rare cases) and formats like Dolby True HD/Digital Plus, DTS HD Master need 18-25 Mbit/s you won't get highest quality possible as software downsamples quality. But i think anyway these formats are not supported by GPU, thats why 3rd solution exists
- As written above use GPU to SB via HDMI, SB to Receiver via HDMI, Receiver to Speakers via Analog. Most expensive as you need new SB and Receiver but thats the way they want high end sound being provided.
Keep in mind that on 2nd and 3rd solution the receiver must have HDMI I/O! Also check HDMI Version! 1.3/1.4? 7.1 is not nessacary (as your speakers can do 5.1 to 7.1 upmix ) but you buy a receiver normally just once and so i would recommend to get that too. If you want a good one LipSync, Deep Color, x.v.Color should be onboard too.
So on the second part - why do you think you have to buy new cables and sub? And did i get you right - you want to directly connect the speakers with receiver? No, you have to connect to a sub. Well, if you want the receiver to do the upmix you need the seperate available 4x Stereo or RCA cables as i don't think an receiver will provide 7.1 via the supplied 4x to 3x 7.1 Audio cable.

• I RECENTLY BOUGHT SOME SONGS FROM ITUNES BUT THE SOUND QUALITY WAS REALLY BAD. I'M NOT SURE WHAT TO DO?

i bought some songs yesterday that i really liked but when i was listening the sound quality was really bad. it just ruined the song almost. i am not sure what to do about it.

You might try listening to the songs from other devices or systems to make sure it doesn't have to do with your computer specifically.
Also try to preview the songs from your computer and any other devices if possible to see if the preview sounds any different.
If you're still having issues you should contact iTunes support:
http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/
Once you get there, choose Music Purchases from the list, then choose Music Purchases again, and it will let you Email them directly about the issue.
Give them the names of the songs you bought and as detailed a description of the audio issue as possible.

• Poor sound quality on podcasts after upgrading to leopard

I upgraded my Powerbook G4 to Leopard yesterday. Currently, my podcasts from Bloomberg on the Econonmy are almost uninteligible as they skipp words, have static etc. Before the update, everything worked fine. Is this a compresssion issue? What can I do to improve sound quality? Please feel free to respond directly to [email protected] thanks

Sorry to here about your problems since upgrading to Leopard, Charles.
I don't know whether there's a cause/effect relationship of one and the other going on there but you've posted on the iTunes for Windows side of these boards and although for the most part we're a pretty nice bunch of people here - if I do say so myself - generally speaking you'll be better off if you post your question over on the iTunes for Mac side.
Good Luck.

• Is it possible to get a refund if i bought an album with extremely bad sound quality?

As asked in the title, is it possible to get a refund if i bought an album with extremely bad sound quality?
I am very unsatisfied with my latest purchase of the album "Never take ffriendship personal" by "Anberlin" ...
I can find all the songs in much better quality, even on YouTube ...
I bought two other albums by Anberlin at the same time, on which the sound quality is much much better and perfectly clear.
is it possible to get some sort of refund ???

• Why such sorry sound quality on iTunes? On some of my purchases the sound level is suppressed on the audio. On others the volume is so low that if I have it set for another song and a new one starts I have to increase the volume to hear it.

There is so much distortion on some of the music I have to play it with QuickTime to get a "clean" track.
What can be done to get a consistent volume level or is this another typical Apple product that you have to take what you get and be happy because it's not a Microsoft product?

If that's the best you can do why don't you get on another forum?
