Audio Podcasts in Smart Playlists

I have a smart playlist that collects all my unheard audio podcasts sorting them by release date. This makes it easy to listen in the car, etc. This smartlist works perfectly within iTunes, listing only unfinished audio tracks. I also have a version for video podcasts only.
Since upgrading to iOS 4.2.1, the audio only version of this smartlist shows up empty on my iPhone. The "video only" version still works as designed.
If I go to "podcasts", all desired episodes are there on my phone, just not in this list. I get the "no content" page as described in many blogs and forums. If I connect the device to iTunes and browse to the synced list the items are listed there. I've even played a track from that playlist on my device within iTunes as suggested.
Alas, I still get no content in this playlist on my iPhone. Everything else works fine.
I have also:
deleted and recreated the smart list
created a "static" list with a podcast file, which syncs content correctly.
Suggestions appreciated.
thanks

Now that that is out of the way, I started playing with the three check boxes at the bottom. Checking "limit to N items selected by least recently added" resolved my issue.
Thanks!!

  • Podcasts in Smart Playlist not showing up on iPhone in iOS 5

Upon first syncing my iPhone to iTunes after uploading both to iOS 5 and iTunes 10.5, I noticed that my podcasts in Smart Playlists were not there, and coincidentally, the Smart Playlists were gone in iTunes (that's a different issue altogether).
The solution I found is that you have to sync the podcast Smart Playlist from the "Podcasts" tab on iTunes.  I did this with my phone plugged in, but suppose that this would also work with a wi-fi sync.
Choosing the Smart Playlists from the "Music" tab will result in empty playlists on your phone.
    Hope this helps!

I'm having the exact same issue on Mac OS 10.7.2 and iOS 5. There are some other posts on Podcasts not syncing with smart playlists. I haven't found a solution yet. Super annoying. I used to have a smart playlist of audio podcasts sorted by date. Now the Smart Playlist shows up on my iPhone - but it's empty. I've tried your solution but id didn't work for me. I've unchecked all Playlists in the Music tab and checked them in the Podcast tab and I've still got empty Smart Playlists on my iPhone. Let me know if you get any more info on this. I'd also like to add that this exact problem surfaced a while back with a previous iOS update.
Here are what I see as the variables in this problem...
    Music tab:
    • Playsts box (my Smart Playlists of Podcasts DO NOT show up here)
    • Genres box (I've tried checking and unchecking the Podcast Genre)
    Podcast tab:
    • Automattically including ___ episodes of ____ podcasts (I've tried checking and unchecking this)
    • List of indivudual podcasts with checkboxes  (I've tried checking and unchecking them)
    • Include Episodes from Playlists  (I've tried checking and unchecking them)

  • Podcasts and Smart Playlists

My first post so bear with me. I have recently discovered the joys of podcasts etc. and as I do a lot of distance driving I would like to be able to create smart playlists that would work with a specific podcast group. I could then catch up on those podcasts without trying to operate my ipod while driving. Hope that makes sense. Any help would be very welcome.

Match all of the following rules:
    Podcast is true
    Album contains 'xxx'
    Live updating
Should work - but I'm on a Mac so the Windows version
    may be slightly different.

    Hi Colin,
    Many thanks,
Your solution works perfectly. I didn't even consider using the album option.

  • Smart playlists with video podcasts

I have a smart playlist on my iPod with one rule:
    Video Kind is Movie
When I play videos from this list I hear the audio, but the video is frozen on a frame.
All videos work fine when played from the main Videos menu.
Is anybody able to play video podcasts from smart playlists ?

Yup, I can confirm. The whole Video Kind rule doesn't seem to work. I did report it but more voices couldn't hurt.

  • Podcasts Playlist and Smart Playlists Problems

Whenever I connect my iPod to my PC and start iTunes, I see that both my Podcasts and Smart Playlists have all reverted to regular playlists. Even when I fix the problem by deleting it all and recreating the playlists, the next time I plug my iPod in and start iTunes the same thing happens. I've reinstalled iTunes and I have the most system update for my iPod. I also manually manage my Podcasts. Does anyone have a clue what's going on?

I've solved this problem by working through an unrelated problem. Try the solutions in these two articles:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61711
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
In particular, do all of the solutions involving uninstalling and reinstalling iPod software and iTunes. Also, clean up your temp files and iTunes installer files. Finally, try reinstalling the COM interface for the iPod service.
I suspect that following all of the various uninstall/reinstall directions fixed it, but the rest is worth trying. I'm not sure what did it, since I couldn't get iTunes to recognize my iPod but none of those solutions fixed that particular problem(I just had to remap the drive letter.) Any one of those things could have did it, really, since it worked great once I got it working again.
    Good luck!

  • IPhone 4, iOS not syncing my SMART playlists of Podcasts

    So weird...
I listen to a LOT of podcasts, and I have several smart playlists, with live updating.
I can rate them, and group them by theme, etc. And I don't have to put the whole podcast list (from "Podcasts") on my phone, if I don't want to.
So far, for years, it's been awesome, and flawless.
But now, with the new iPhone, and new iOS, the playlist is no longer on my 1st-Level in "playlists" on my iPhone, it's tucked into a "Smart Playlists" folder (which is where it is in my iTunes, but it didn't next folders before).
Okay. That's fine. It helps fight the clutter... but there's NO SONGS IN THERE !
I have a "Smart Bands" folder, with several bands, and THOSE sync just fine. Those songs are all THERE.
Does this have something to do w/ Podcasts specifically?
    Anyone else experiencing this?
    AAGH !

    Okay, I tried something.
I changed the TYPE of file from Podcast to "music" and now they sync...
But not being able to alias Podcasts in Smart Playlists? That's not cool

  • Smart Playlists are fixed with iPod Updater 2006-01-10

    Hello Podders, Resident Furball here...
iPod Updater 2006-01-10 restores dynamic updating of Smart Playlists on the iPod
iPod Updater 2005-06-26 disabled the onboard dynamic updating of Smart Playlists on iPods older than the Nano and Gen5. This feature can now be restored using iPod Updater 2006-01-10.
We held lengthy debates about this issue on Discussions (here, here and here), as well as the iLounge thread that sparked a dedicated website.
However, we are glad to confirm that the latest iPod Updater resolves this issue, as I was informed by email from Apple Level 2 Support, and as tested by some of our long-suffering Gen4 and Pod Photo users. The Apple KB article on Smart Playlists has also been updated.
Since the threads that I started have now been locked down to reflect resolution, I'm posting this just to confirm that everything now appears to have been resolved, and I would like to thank everyone here on Discussions for their patience and excellent troubleshooting in diagnosing this problem. Thank you to everyone who posted Feedback, those of you who took the time to phone Apple, and also to Apple Level 2 Phone Support for their assistance in escalating this matter up to US Engineering.
    Happy Podding everyone!
    Kind regards,
    Gopha.

    Hello folks, Resident Furball again...
Many folks have now reported that Smart Playlist functionality has been properly restored to the iPod.
However, some folks have been reporting that Smart Playlists containing Podcasts are still coming to grief.
From what I have seen reported, the firmwares prior to the Updater 2005-06-26 that broke Smart Playlists had the ability to dynamically update Podcast-containing Smart Playlists, but this functionality has not been restored in the latest 2006-01-10 that has fixed 'simple' Smart Playlists.
I don't use Podcasts myself, so if you would like to know more, please refer to posts from Vibeeen and Tutackhamen who have described the continuing issue in detail.
In the meanwhile, I have drawn the attention of Level 2 Support to these reports, and recommend that you continue to submit appropriate Feedback if you are affected by this quirk.
    Kind regards,
    Gopha.

  • IPhone Smart Playlist doesn't remove played podcasts

I have a smart playlist created of my UN-PLAYED podcasts. The rule is set to podcast = true and played count = 0. It used to work fine prior to upgrading to 3.0. I am guessing I am not the only one with this problem but I have seen anyone else comment on this.
It is very irritating in the fact that if I stop playing my podcasts and come back later. I don't know which podcast to start back with.
They used to remove their selves from the playlist which made it easy.
When I re-sync with iTunes, the smart playlist in iTunes updates and then syncs back to the iPhone just fine but it may be days before I re-sync sometimes.
Does anyone have any ideas or workarounds? Thanks in advance.
    --Mickey

Well - I finally found my on answer. The trick to resolving this bug is to create a NEW smart playlist. The old one doesn't work for some reason.
I created with this criteria(better than the one I originally had):
    Criteria
--Play Count is less than 1
    --Genre contains Podcast
--Kind contains Audio(lower case in the example)
Basically gives me all of my PODCASTS that haven't been played. Just the AUDIO ones only.
Tried it today and it works fine.

  • Smart playlist and podcasts

I have a 160gb iPod classic. I would like to listen to my podcasts like I do my music, one right after another. I made a smart playlist for my podcasts, right clicked it to copy to play order and synced my iPod. The smart playlist is in iTunes, nowhere to be found on my iPod.
    Anybody have any suggestions?

@woodp Interesting approach. I guess I never noticed a Podcasts Smart Playlist as you describe it.
In my testing when I had the Automatically include option selected, none of the selected playlists from the Include Episodes from Playlists section synced, while all of the episodes from the Automatically include option did. It may be that the rules of your Netcast Smart Playlist were transferred and your iPod is evaluating those rules on the content that was transferred from the Automatically include option.
As I've always seen it, Smart Playlists provide much more control over the content that I sync with my iPod. First I have way more podcast episodes than will fit on my iPod, or any iPod available. There are some combinations available from the Automatically include, but not enough for my tastes.
As an example, I want the most recently added unplayed episodes for some podcasts, like news podcasts. At the same time I want the least recently unplayed episodes of other podcasts, like audio dramas I'm trying to catch up on. Some times I want a playlist of episodes 5 minutes long or less when I'm likely to be interrupted. Smart Playlists allow me to include all of these, and manage the space they take up on my iPod with greater control than previously available from the Podcasts tab of my iPod.
To get around the limitations of the Podcasts tab in iTunes 8, I like most of the people posting here created playlists and synced them through the Music tab. Apple has taken care of this work around and now I manage Music from the Music tab and Podcasts from the Podcasts tab.
I guess the thing that would have made this transition less frustrating would have been if they had taken a couple extra minutes during the demonstration of iTunes 9.0 at the Keynote to show how podcast syncing was improved. Still Steve Jobs did say the day was going to be about Music, and it was.

  • Can't create a smart playlist of podcasts in iOS 7?

I've got to iPhone 4Ss, one on iOS 6, the other on iOS 7. On the iOS6 device, I have created a Smart Playlist that contains my podcast subscriptions for the last two weeks. This playlist is the major use of my iPhone. However, on the iOS 7 device, The Recent Podcast playlist is there in the Music app, but it is empty. Is iOS 7 forcing me to listen to podcasts only through the useless Podcasts app?

  • Can't sync my podcast smart playlist(s) to my ipod

I created a smart playlist to hold my podcasts, which would sync to my ipod when I was using the previous version of itunes, but after installing itunes 9 I can no longer get that playlist to sync to my ipod. I have tried both unplugging and replugging back in my ipod as well as restore factory settings and reloading everything back onto the ipod, still no luck. Does anyone know how I can solve this or if there will be a patch for itunes 9 to resolve this as well as some of the problems experienced with syncing with devices like the apple tv.

Check out this article: http://www.gotknowhow.com/articles/how-to-get-podcast-playlists-to-sync-in-itune s-9.aspx
I was in the same boat and 20 minutes on the phone with an Apple Product Specialist and we figured it out.
Apple changed the sync behavior of iTunes, because what we all have been doing was a workaround for an old bug we didn't recognize as such. We abandoned syncing podcasts using the Podcasts tab because it didn't give us the control that Smart Playlists gave us. We discovered that iTunes would sync our podcast playlists under the music tab.
That was fixed, though I wish it had been covered during the iTunes demo in the Keynote.
Use the Music tab to sync songs and other files you find in your Music library. Use the Podcasts tab to sync podcast episodes you find in your Podcasts library. Both tabs have sections listing all of your playlists. On the Podcasts tab, you may have to scroll to the bottom.
Next, Turn OFF the "Automatically include" option. This is simple syncing. If you want more control, turn this off and select the Smart Playlists you've defined using the bottom section.
I found that all of the playlists I used to sync were still selected in this lower section. As soon as I turned of the "Automatically include" option, everything was back to normal.
FYI, I love having the "Automatically fill free space with songs" option on the music tab. Now as I listen to podcasts and they are removed from the Smart Playlists, I get more music and no wasted space on my device.

  • Auto-removing played podcasts from a smart playlist

I'm wondering if anyone can help me figure out a way to do this. I have two smart playlists for podcasts. The first contains my favourite podcasts and they are removed from the playlist once they've finished playing. This works and I accomplished it like this (using two smart playlists):
Smart Playlist 1 - Favourite Podcasts Helper
    - Album is "Podcast A"
    OR
    - Album is "Podcast B"
    OR
    - Album is "Podcast C"
    etc
Smart Playlist 2 - Favourite Podcasts
    - Playlist is "Favourite Podcasts Helper"
    AND
    - Playcount is 0
As I say, it works great. It's annoying to have to have an extra playlist in there (necessary because you can't mix AND with OR conditions in a single smart playlist) but I prefix it with a "z" and it drops out of sight to the bottom.
Now, here's the problem. I want a playlist for all the other podcasts that DON'T appear in my favourites list and which ALSO removes played podcasts. I don't want to name them all because I don't want to have to remember to add each new podcast to the list because there are a lot of them and I always forget to add them when I load a new podcast onto the iPod.
    I tried to do this:
Playlist 3 - All Other Podcasts
    - Podcast is true
    AND
    - Playlist is not "Favourite Podcasts"
    AND
    - Playcount is 0
It works in so far as it collects all the right podcasts but it won't update, leaving played podcasts in the list. It WILL update if I remove the "Podcast is true" condition but that makes it useless. I tried splitting it up as in my Favourites playlist, moving the "Podcast is true" condition out into it's own playlist but that doesn't help. It seems that as long as a "Podcast" condition is in the chain somewhere, it stops it from updating.
Maybe this is a bug that will get squashed in the next firmware update. Until then does anyone have an idea of how to make it work without listing every single podcast album?

    I had previously tried
    Smart Playlist - all podcasts
    . podcast is true
    Smart Playlist - unheard podcasts
    . playcount is 0
    AND
    . playlist is all podcasts
And that didn't work, I guess because the first playlist won't update. After reading your post I thought that it ought to work the other way around if the playcount is being analysed first:
    Smart Playlist - anything unheard
. playcount is 0 (this works fine)
    Smart Playlist - unheard podcasts
    . playlist is anything unheard
But that won't work either. While the first playlist updates fine, the second one never updates and continues to display content that no longer appears in the playlist it is built on. Frustrating. I'm sure there must be a shortcut that hasn't occurred to me yet.

  • Bug: iOS 5 and iTunes 10.5 podcast smart playlist sort order and how to fix.

There seems to be a bug in iOS 5 and iTunes 10.5 involving the sort order of a smart playlist of podcasts. I created such a playlist and sorted by release date on iTunes but I noticed it had a different sort order on the iPod Touch.
After playing around with it a bit I found that the only way to preserve the sort order that I have in iTunes on the iPod Touch is to uncheck "Live Updating" in the smart playlist.

Confirming this incredibly annoying bug.  Basic list sorting not working... real bottom shelf work apple.
workaround update:  limit to must be turned on, set it to an absurdly high number if you don't want to actually limit the playlist, then one of the sortby options in that submenu will work.   The live update checkbox is irrelevant from experimentation.
This workaround does NOT fix the fundamental problem: sort order from itunes in smart playlists is not being synced and preserved in ios5 devices.
