Audio Port on a MacBook Pro Retina

I'm thinking of buying a new MacBook Pro with retina. I want to be sure that the audio port works for input as well. Is there someone who bought one recently who can confirm this for me? Thanks.

It's a headphone or headset jack. It is not an audio input.

So, I need to simultaneously have one audio output and an audio input. I noticed my macbook has one audio jack (with the icon of headphones) and I was wondering what kind of potential it has? Or, what my options are? This is mostly for recording music, so I can have headphones in the output and my synth in the input.
I have a cable where it doubles the holes of the headphones jack (I know for sure it's an output, but can it be used as input as well?), it's the 1/8" jack that plugs into your computer and the other end is just two "headphones" holes. So.. I can physically plug in my synth and headphones, and when my synth's "local" is off, and I play the keyboard - i hear nothing through my headphones. When the "loca" is on, I hear myself playing through the headphones. Therefore, the sound of the synth has to be going through the audio line as input and coming out as output or something... So I would think that it does double as inout ad output but I really don't know. But... in Logic I can't record anything either way. So, I don't know if I'm messing up or if the macbooks jacks are just being used incorrectly... There's a lot of variables to this problem ):

So the USB 3.0 will definitely work as an input source if I get a USB/audio cable? Can the USB ports work as both in and out lines? Also, I have a midi USB interface hooked up... it won't like override or do anything weird with that will it?
I did not say that, I said "Use a USB interface"
There are thousands of them out there, and they will provide higher quality than the 1/8" analog connection.
Look at Lexicon, M-Audio, Tascam etc, look for the facilities you want (2ch/4ch/morech, mic/line inputs etc)

  • When playing music through the audio port on my macbook pro only the left speakers/headphones work. external speakers are fine!

I am having problems with the 3.5mm audio jack on my mac book pro. its been just over a year and now when i connect 3.5 headphones or speakers they only play the left speakers. the right speakers do not work.

If you go to System Preferences (from the Apple menu) > Sound and select Output, how is the Balance slider set? If it is all the way to the left, put it in the middle.
    Best of luck.

  • ShureSM58 not working on MacBook Pro Retina

    Hello,
Basically, I have bought the Shure SM58 microphone to record audio voice on my MacBook Pro Retina, but it doesn't seem to work.. The specifications and the seller clearly told me that the audio jack included output and input, is there anything I am doing wrong or I should know of? Please help!
    Michael Lafond

The SM58 uses a 3 pin xlr connector, how are you connecting to a Mac?
Where do you connect this? with some adaptor I assume (as there is no balanced microphone socket on any Mac)

  • Macbook Pro Retina 15 + iPad 3

    Dear forum users,
Usually when I plug in my iPad 3 into the left USB port of my Macbook Pro Retina 15 inch the iPad keeps jumping between connected and disconnected. Weirdly enough this doesn't happen in the right USB port.
It also happens inconsistently, when i plugged in the Apple Keyboard with USB ports it worked fine. When directly plugged in it gives the errors. Sometimes it does work normally but usually I have the problem as mentioned above.
I am using a third party 30-pin connecter cable.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hey there evenwerk,
Do the USB connection issues, where your iPad disconnects or isn’t recognized by your MacBook Pro, occur when using the USB cable that came with the device? The article linked below provides a lot of great information and troubleshooting tips that will resolve most issues like this one.

  • Thunderbolt audio distortion during heavy Thunderbolt hard drive activity on MacBook Pro Retina 15 2012

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro Retina connected to a Thunderbolt Display, with Thunderbolt hard drives attached to that. Whenever I'm doing a big copy, or a Time Machine backup, any audio being played through the speakers becomes heavily distorted. If I switch to internal speakers, it's fine (but obviously not high-quality). As soon as drive activity quiets down, audio is fine again.
Anyone else having this problem and/or know of a fix? It's super aggravating to have to change speaker settings every hour when my backup kicks off!
    Thanks!

I believe this issue is caused by bad ground coupling between the two devices, some of the induced charge can spark between connectors in the thunderbolt port causing computer to basicly freeze.
To solve this issue try touching the connectors outside metal part to your macbooks body first to discharge it, then while plugging int the connector do it at slight angle so the metal of the connector touches Mac's body.
This method has been working for me.

  • MacBook Pro (Retina) has S/PDIF Mini-TOSLINK? Audio Input? Boot as FireWire Drive?

I love all the Apple MacBooks and I fall in love with the new MacBook Pro (Retina) but then I review all the specs and I feel that some things are missing:
    It has S/PDIF Mini-TOSLINK? I use this a lot!
    It hast Audio Line-In input?
I only see output and somebody told me that the same port could do both, but what abaout using the MacBook with Guitar Rig? I need both, input and output!
Sometimes you need to boot the MacBook as FireWire target disk mode, the new MacBook doesn't have any FireWire port, you can plug a Thunderbolt to FireWire adaptor, It could work? how can I boot the mac as target disk mode?
The last thing that was missing is the optical drive but that is another story!
    Thanks for your answers!

well, like Point - counter point (for those old enough to remember it) let me give you my 0.02 cents worth
YES, it is SO worth it.  The big expense is the 512G flash SSD.  Besides being more shock resistant, not subject to fragmentation, its blankty blankaty FAST!  So many programs load twice as fast.  (I am running windows in Parallels, a huge diff. in start up speed).  Video editing SO much faster.   That is a huge part of the cost.  The rest is the lovely screen.  When I picked mine up yesterday (Tuesday) opened it in the apple store, put it next to the current 15" MBP and there is a noticeable improvement including less glare.
One feature that is not mentioned, while the screen is 2880 x 1800 you get 5 different display resolutions that all are very sharp.  For OLD eyes, you can go down to 1024 x 640 (OK, WAY TOO BIG) and when I am writing code, I want a lot of space, so bring it up to 1920 x 1200.  The default is in the middle.  Most other LCD screens have one "GOOD" resolution.  To me, this is a HUGE feature!
The speakers are MUCH better than the ones on my previos MBP. and the fan is MUCH quieter (I play Second Life a lot and that heats up the computer so the fans are always at max!)  Oh yea, the video card is noticably faster with Second Life.  I am getting twice the FPS.
I am very happy with the jacks.  Yes, if you need wired ethernet each day, it would be nice to have that built in, I guess ditto for video out, etc. but I dont mind buying the adapters when I need them (Yo Apple, I am waiting!).  Ditto with the external DVD Drive.  If I was living on an airplane and wanting to watch movies on each flight, thish would NOT be the laptop for me, but I figure I use a DVD maybe once every other month or so. (and since I have more than one mac, the remote DVD option works fine with me.  Worked fine for years with the mac air!)
Bottom line, this very expensive computer seems very polished to me.  If I was just not so impatient to wait 2-3 weeks to order one, I would have an extra 256G storage and 16G of ram!  But I guess I can settle for this "entry Level" machine

    Hi Auracles1,
Here's a pretty discussion regarding wireless printing with this device and a Mac.

I have a similar OfficeJet and it was a multi-step process. (1) Install printer drivers on the machine, (2) Add the printer queue in print & fax, (3) Run the "setup wizard" from the disc for wireless printing.

Hi, I have a latest Macbook Pro Retina. I connect its hdmi port to a DisportPort of HP Compaq LA2205wg external monitor, but no signal at all. Could anybody help me

I could be *very* wrong but did not know you could output from HDMI into displayport consistently with no issues.
Try a mDP to DP cable like this (the mDP end will go directly into the thunderbolt port of your laptop)

  • MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) LEFT USB PORT DISFUNTION

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) : Constantly disconnected and reconnected from my iPhone while using the left USB port. Is this a rare accident?

If the iPhone works correctly on the other port, then the fault lies within the MBP.  Bring it in for service.

  • 2 monitors on MacBook Pro (Retina) using Thunderbolt and HDMI ports?

I would like to buy a MacBook Pro with a Retina display.  I want to attach 2 external monitors and Ethernet.  I need to use one Thunderbolt port to attach to my (wired) ethernet.
Can I attach 2 monitors to a MacBook Pro (Retina) using
    1) a mini display port to DVI adapter
    2) a HDMI to DVI adapter?

Yes, it is possible to run 3 monitors at once on the Retina MacBook Pro (2 connected over Thunderbolt and one over  HDMI).
    Displays used in picture below:
Retina on laptop @ “best for Retina”
    iMac used as a display @ 2560 x 1440 via Thunderbolt
    iMac used as a display @ 2560 x 1440 via Thunderbolt/DisplayPort
    LG monitor @ 1920 x 1200 via HDMI
