Audio problems Fusion Drive

Okey, i've been surfing TOO MUCH TIME for answers and fixes with the known issues with Audio Interfaces + iMac 2013 Fusion Drive.
C'mon apple, I'm not paying too much money for a lame support. I bought the iMac for audio production and what i found? That I can't use it. And I want the Fusion Drive, so I'm not gonna buy a iMac with 1 TB SSD or 1 TB HD.
So, Apple, who is gonna pay the time that I can't work with audio? How am I suposed to work until you fix this issue that's not fixed yet since MONTHS ago?

Good News:  I can confirm that OS X 10.9.2 fixes the issue with the Fusion Drive and MBox Mini (and possibly other USB Audio devices).
My Hardware:
27" iMac, latest version, 3.5 GHz i7
3TB Fusion Drive
8 GB RAM
Drobo 5D hooked up via Thunderbolt
2 24" LED Cinema displays, one directly connected to Thunderbolt, one chained off the Drobo's second Thunderbolt port
MBox Mini connected via USB on Cinema Display that is chained off the Drobo
Logic Pro X 10.0.6
Previous symptoms:
Audio drop outs after a few minutes in all sound related applications
Audio degradation in Logic
Both iTunes and Spotify Apps could (and often) froze machine (no mouse or trackpad or keyboard input until hard restart)
None of these issues occured when switching all audio to go through iMac's built in speakers.
Last night I installed the Mavericks 10.9.2 Combo Update (13C32) available right now only to developers, but you can find it, it's out there.
Everything works just fine now.
Stress test:
Before I went to bed I put a large Spotify playlist on shuffle and repeat, did the same for an iTunes playlist, and looped a 32 track Logic project all at once (yes, this sounded horrible!) and turned the volume down on my MBox Pro.  When I woke up and turned the volume up on my MBox Mini, all was still playing through my Event 20/20 speakers.  I have worked all day today in Logic and it works great.
I thought I was going to have to send my iMac back for one with just an SSD or perform the Fusion Drive split that people were talking about, but all is well.
Hopefully this update will be released soon for everyone.
Hope this helps.  I personally was heartbroken for a couple days as my new machine was pretty much useless and I had already given my awesome early 2011 quad-core MacBook Pro to my brother.
Keep the faith

  • Audio Interfaces & Fusion Drives?

I am using the newest 27" iMac (3tb fusion drive) w/ an Mbox 3 interface.  Every audio related program I have used works fine accept Pro Tools, both 10 & 11. I was hoping 10.9.2 would fix this, but it didn't unfortunately.
I get a crazy amount of error messages during recording and playback in Pro Tools. 6104 CPU Error Message, even though the system usage will be under 5%. Some other errors as well, but  there are many threads about this over at the Avid forums, but a lot of people seem to have the same issue with fusion drives & PT.
I don't have an Apple retail store where I live so sending this iMac back and getitng a new one with a regular drive would take well over a month and would be really inconvenient for me.
So I'm wondering if anyone else has had luck with any different audio interfaces w/ fusion drives & Pro Tools (10 or 11).
Again, I have an Mbox 3 & iMac w/ fusion drive. I get error messages (6104 - CPU usage error messages and stuff).  I was actually lookign at the Apogee Duet 2, but wouldn't wana get it and find that I get the same error messages in PT as i did with my Mbox.
So if anyone could reccomend an interface that works properly (ne errors) with fusion drives & Pro Tools & 10.9.2 that would be great!

So are there any comptabible audio interfaces that work with Pro Tools & Fusion Drives? Does anyone know?
Did anyone have luck with the Duet 2 & PT 10 / 11?

  • DIY Fusion Drive Problem (8,2)

    Hey,
I wanted to go a step further and create my own DIY Fusion Drive. I had no problems installing the new ssd (128gb Samsung 840 Pro) instead of the hdd (standard mac hdd) and moving the hdd to the place where the optical drive has been.
I then proceeded to boot from a recovery USB Stick runing the mountain lion recovery partition on it. I configured both of these drives without any problems and finally created my Fusion Drive (visible in disk utility).
But here are things getting worse. My original plan was to recover from a TimeMachine Backup i created right before I started working on the Fusion Drive. But no, it said an error occured and I should restart the PC. After googling this error a little bit (and trying the recovery over and over again, different attempts to repair the time machine, which doesn't seemed to be broken etc.), I came up with the idea that my TimeMachine data could be corrupted and a whole backup is not possible. No problem I thought to myself.
You just try to install Mountain Lion fresh with your Recovery USB Stick and then get one or two folder from your backup that you need. But nope, installing Mountain Lion aborted with an error too while checking if my MacBook would fit the installation or something.
Last try: Cmd+R to start internet recovery. Downloaded the whole thing. Now I was able to reinstall LION fresh on my system (which of course would be the basic installation since my macbook came with Lion). Problem is: Lion doesn't know anything about Fusion Drive and I couldn't select any drive to install it on.
Right now I'm really thinking about installing the os on the ssd alone, what I didn't want to do. But I'm not seeing a possiblilty to get the system back up and running they way I wanted it to.
Now it's on you guys. My last hope. Do you have any ideas on how to fix this problem? I read so many guides and neither of them came up with the problems I have. They just say "and after configurating your fusion drive, you just install moutain lion again and you're good" :|
    Thank you very much,
    MrMütze

I just tried what would happen if a delete the Fusion drive again. I was able to start the installation process of LION to my SSD, but Mountain Lion still aborted with an error while evaluating my system. So it shouldn't be a problem associated with the FusionDrive.

  • More boot camp problems new 5k imac 3 tera fusion drive

there seems to be problems with Yosemite and boot camp assistant
i'm cross posting this to the iMac forum but I spent hours online with apple tech today and none of the several foks I talked to there had even seen a 5k 27" yet and my call back from Cupertino and engineering is no till tomorrow so I thought I should post here too
MMy bto 5k shipped from China sunday night and arrived in Maine this morning.... Amazing when you think about it for a bto
iinstallation and set up we're going fine and I started up boot camp assistant to create  a temp boot camp while I wait for my thunder bay 4 box to take the drives for my old Mac pro when boot camp will have a1 tera SSD all to itself....
so carved off a 700 gig boot camp partition which the assistant formatted fat I then plugged is the lighting to FW adapter in a LaCie 2 tera fw 800 drive to act as a bridge to my LaCie DVD burner which uses the old fw400 cables and inserted my new shrink wrap win 8.1 retail 64 DVD and up comes the win 8 install in very tiny type in a tiny window which got a bit of a laugh out of me.
And I go through it to the point of selecting that boot camp partition and then said it could not use a fat partition and I should reformat it from the win 8.1 installer which I did and then it said it could not use and unknown partition so I said great and booted back to 10-10 and the boot camp tool to put things back and it said it could not I then went to disk tools and it also said the  3tera fusion could not be either reformatted or put back to a single partition I was on with tech support where I went up through 4 levels of support due to the 5k bto which most had no knowledge of. We tried the optioncommand r to get to DT and the same problem as did going to reinstall from the net which after a 30 min down load could not reformat either it is now kicked to Cupertino with a call back tomorrow
( At this point all I want to do is put the computer back in the condition it was in when i started with a plain Yosemite on an unpartitioned 3 tera fusion... Then deal with boot camp when it can have its own drive)
am betting it will take a Unix comand line to reformat but be aware there may be boot camp issues with my configuration
and  any help here will be great fully received

  • Boot camp Yosemite Win 8.1 3tb Fusion Drive problems

    Hi,
As many other have reported on the internet I am having problems installing windows on my iMac 27' late 2014 3tb fusion drive, where the partition I create falls outside the 2.2tb limit that prevents windows to be installed when selecting disk under the windows installation (i.e, same problem as Win 8.1, iMac Retina 3TB Fusion, Yosemite, Boot Camp fail!).
Is my understanding correct that this issue was solved in the OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.3 or was all they did to make sure boot camp could create a partition, but windows still couldn't find it?
I am using Yosemite 10.10.2 and I am wondering if for some reason they didn't include this update?
Has anyone successfully installed windows through boot camp on a 3tb fusion drive on yosemite, without 'manually' dividing the 3tb fusion into two partitions, and then creating the windows partition within the first partition?
    Many thanks
    iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014), OS X Yosemite (10.10.2), 3tb fusion drive

You are correct. Please see - iMac (27-inch, Late 2012): Boot Camp alert with 3TB hard drive - Apple Support.
BCA should work. If you are running into any issues, can you post the output of the following Terminal commands?
    diskutil list
    diskutil cs list
sudo gpt -vv r show /dev/disk0
sudo gpt -vv r show /dev/disk1
    sudo fdisk /dev/disk0
    sudo fdisk /dev/disk1

When you setup the wireless and ethernet in the computer.. ipv6 will be on automatic.. this is wrong for the latest TC firmware and airport utility. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4597
Go to the wireless and ethernet setup in preferences and change ipv6 to link local.
Once you do the big backup by ethernet the wireless will function fine for incremental.. it is obviously not estimating the size correctly..
A full back-up on the iMac would be about 650 GB.  The partial updates that I have been trying start out at 115MB and keep growing indefinitely.  The original back-up never finished nor have any of the follow-up attempts.
The first estimate should be the full backup but it will keep growing as the backup advances.. I would also delete any inprogress files to make sure it is not messing up .. delete even a sparsebundle if there is one for the imac on the TC and start afresh once you have ethernet connection.
    See A10 here.
Pondini may have some other clues there to give you an idea of why the backup is slow or not finishing.. there is a lot of issues with TM when it decides not to work.

  • Fusion Drive on Macbook Pro & Hibernation problem

    Hi,
Two weeks ago I installed second SDD in my Optibay (Macbook Pro mid2010 13"). Now I have HDD (Seagate Momentus XT 750GB) + SSD (Kingston V300 60GB) in configuration like that:
    1) HDD in normal bay (because of SMS)
    2) SDD in optibay
I configured this drives to work as Fusion Drive (it's really fast now!), but the main problem is hibernation (known as deep sleep also).
When macbook goes sleep whole memory are written to disk (in my case - fusion drive), and when the battery die it should be resumed from disk. But I found, that people using OS X from optibay drive can't use hibernation. In this case the main HD is expanded on both drives (SDD + HDD), so this is a problem - memory image should be readed also from optibay/normal bay drives.
Is there any workaround or any chance to get hibernation on fusion drive working in Macbook?
The main reason I'm looking for solution is low battery problem - I can't sleep safely my computer on 2-3% of battery and I don't want to turn it off...
    Best regards,
    Dawid

I have the same physical setup (though it's a MacBook 5,1, the first unibody 13"), but haven't tried Fusioning-it. (I have been holding off for 10.8.3 in the hope that it will have a properly fusion-aware Disk Utility when I get into trouble; my understanding is that all official Fusion Drive systems have a custom build of 10.8.2 with changes in Disk Utility and, I assume, diskutil.)
As far as I know, and I'd love to be proved wrong, hibernation just can't work if the SSD is in the optibay (as mine is as well). It doesn't get power immediately on wake so it just doesn't work. The only thing you can do is disable hibernation support so that the system doesn't even try (saving you the hibernation-image space on the SSD); set OS X to restore your windows when you log back in; and then shut down when you're nearing zero battery. Alas.
If this can't be made to work when the SSD is the boot volume alone, I can't imagine there's a way to make it work when it's in fusion drive.

  • After Yosemite, numerous problems on Mac Mini with Custom Fusion Drive

I have installed OS X Yosemite on a Mac Mini with a "homemade" fusion drive.  The update seems to have completed, although the following problems are evident:
Missing menu items from the menu bar, including the apple menu, notifications, time machine and others
Menu bar items return after booting non-apple software (MS Office, for instance), but disappear again once apple apps are running (App Store).  You can mouse over these menus, even though their respective icons are not there, and access the content within the menus.
iTunes crashes upon launch; app store launches, but no content loads.  Additionally, the app store menu item under the missing apple menu location, shows 4 software updates are available, but cannot load the app store content in order to access the updates.
Safari loads, but enters a continuous loop of "A problem occurred with this webpage so it was reloaded."  Then, a application quit notification window appears, stating "Safari Web Content quit unexpectedly."
Lots of spinning beachball now that was not happening prior to update.
I've tried resetting the machine numerous times.  Nothing seems to fix the problem(s)
The machine seems to recognize the fusion drive in system report, and all files are accessible in finder, so I don't think the fusion drive is the issue.
    Any suggestions, pointers, fixes?

I'm looking at buying a new computer.  Has anyone had any problems with fusion drive on iMac?  If so, what kind of problems, and were they easily corrected?

    NOPE!
I better not!  My iMac is only a week old.  And, if I did have any problems with it, I would let Apple deal w/it!  I do not troubleshoot when I'm under warranty.  That's Apple job!

  • Any problems with 27" fusion drive yet

    Hi all!
Contemplating purchasing the 27" iMac with fusion drive.  What are you all hearing out there with regard to issues?
    Thanks!
    Stevie

I'm running a 1TB fusion and love it.  Based on how the tech, if there are any problems it will probably be around disk utilities trying to "fix" the drive.  The way the recovery works is a bit different, not a recovery partition per-say but a MAC OS X BOOT partition.

  • Mac OSX Mavericks 10.9 firewire audio problem on RME Fireface 800, MOTU 828 Mk II and Apogee Duet on late 2013 iMac i7

I just got the late 2013 iMac 3.5GHz Intel Core i7 and all my firewire based audio interfaces do not work properly although I upgraded to the latest drivers. iTunes or Youtube can play for a short and then there are unbrearable digital noises.
Apogee Duet is slightly better that can play for a few minutes. Then it may have short pause or digital noises. I need to reset the "Sample Rate" to other values to get it work again.
MOTU 828 mk II and RME Fireface 800 are having the most serious problems. Alternating the sample rate can sometimes help but often I need to reboot the iMac to get it work again. However, it works for only 1-2 minutes before the digital noises.
These are the software/drivers I installed:
    - Apogee Maestro 2 version 2.8.8
    - MOTU Universal Audio Installer for Mac OS X version 1.6.58373 (8/20/2013)
    - RME version 3.19, firmware 2.77
I connect the fireware through Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire convertor.
These drivers are supposed to work with 10.9 but they don't. Anyone can help or share experience?

I've read in other forums that there are two issues that is causing this problem of chopping audio and freezing interfaces.  One has to do with USB 2.0 /USB 3.0 issues in OS.  The other seems to be an issue with the Fusion drive.
The fix for the fusion drive issue that has been shared online is to either:
Option #1.  Don't use the fusion drive and create an external boot drive clone (either SSD or standard HD) and use as your primary drive (completely surpassing the internal fusion drive).
Option #2.  Split the internal fusion drive.  From there you can use them as two separate logical drives.  Load your OS on one of the drives (SSD or HD).   http://www.macworld.com/article/2015664/how-to-split-up-a-fusion-drive.html
Before, you do any of the above, make sure that you backup your current system setup.
I just received my imac (2013) with 3TB fusion and I plan on trying option #1.  I bought a 3TB external USB drive which I plan to clone after I have the machine running.  Once I clone the internal drive, I will test how the machine runs from both the internal fusion and the external to prove if this addresses the audio clipping/stopping problem.  Hopefully, Apple will find a fix for this.
It is really a dissapointment that a brand new $2500+ machine and software was not tested to perform something that my 2008 MacBookPro and my home built Window XT machine (circa 2003) did without issue.  I wished that I would have checked the forums about these issues before I purchased the machine.
You can do some searches online and find even more detail discussions on this topic.
