Audio Problems - iChat and AIM

Please help, before I tear my hair out.
I'm trying to A/V chat between my MacBook and my mom's pc (XP/sp2/AIM 5.9/Logitech Notebook deluxe cam and mic). Video works, finally; but the MacBook can't hear - the pc can.
I've verified the pc's mic is working, tuned it in AIM, adjusted Quicktime to 1.5, and don't know what else to do.
Suggestions?
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi bedubya,
Get the PC end to repeat the "tuning" of the camera and mic. See message 570 onwards. Access to the preferences is from the AIM Buddy list menu items nowadays.

  • Cannot have audio with iChat and AIM

    Hi,
I am trying to use iChat with friends using AIM (on PC).
But I have never been able to start an audio session with someone (exchange of text messages is Ok).
The "button" with the phone remains grey (not active). So I cannot start an audio session after contact selection).
My microphone is Ok (Audio is Ok with other tool like Skype).
Also, in the contact list, I dont see any audio logo in front of their names, even if they are online (and then able to have text chats).
When PC/AIM friends want to start an audio session with me, they get the following message "[email protected] is not accepting Talk invitations or does not support the Talk feature."
    What can I do ?
More details on my configuration :
I have an eMac with MAC OS X 10.3.9 and iChat 2.1(v153)
I am using the micro integrated somewhere in the computer.
    In networking system preferences,
the Mas OS firewall is not activated (should be activated with appropriate ports ?)
and no service is activated (some services should be activated ?).
    Can you help ?
I would like to do have also video with friends but I would like to be able to do audio before !
When I see all problems in the iChat discussion, I am a little bit afraid ...
Does iChat 3 could be better ?
    Thanks

    Hi Gérard,
Welcome to the Apple Dicussion Pages
    See this FAQ
You will see it says (near the bottom ) that Audio only chats can not be done from AIM (on a PC) to iChat.
Trillian Basic does allow Audio Chats from PCs to Mac usiing the same AIM servers (Smae names will work). They also do a Pro version that will do Video as well (costs $25).
AIM are also working on Triton which is supposed to add this feature. (See link under the yellow DONWLOAD Now button).
Your friend can download a beta of this if he wishes but it is a very early version.

  • Issues with both iChat and AIM

Recently I have been having issues with both iChat and AIM. I was hoping someone here could shed some light on what the problem may be.
AIM allows me to log-in and chat with people. However, if I close an IM window or Buddy Info window, the AIM program will quit and the "Unexpectedly Quit" notice will pop up.
In regards to iChat, I did a clean install of iChat using the Tiger install disk. However, when I launch iChat and go through the initial setup it freezes up and I get the spinning rainbow and have no choice but to do a force quit.
Any ideas as to what the problem may be?

    Hi
Seeing you re-installed iChat you will need to run the 10.4.10combo http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx10410comboupdat eppc.html to bring iChat back upto date.

  • TO ALL THOSE HAVING TROUBLE WITH ICHAT AND AIM ON MACBOOKS

I've had a lot of trouble with AIM and iChat on my new Macbook, but I believe I've figured out the answers to all the problems I and others have encountered.
Firstly, for those who's AIM continually crashes and displays the message "The application AIM unexpectedly shut down," my answer to your problem is too many sent messages. Watch the bar in the bottom left of your chat window, when it reaches red, your application will probably shut down.
Secondly, for those experiencing difficulties with iChat, it's most likely a problem with communitcation between your wireless router and your computer. Try these steps:
    1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
    2. From the View, choose Sharing.
    3. Click the Firewall tab.
    4. Click New.
    5. From the Port Name pop-up menu, choose Other.
If you have a Macbook, you'll probably have a TCP Port Number Bar and a UDP Port Number Bar. Try these steps:
    1. In the TCP Port Number(s) Bar, type: 5190, 5298
    2. In the UDP Port Number(s) Bar, type: 1024-5219, 5221, 5223-65535
    3. In the Description Bar, type: iChat AV
    4. Click OK
    5. Click Start above the window with your firewall settings, and make sure the box next to iChat AV is checked
    6. Relaunch iChat
Good Luck! I hope this solves some of the problems that people have been encountering.

    Rob
My Linksys is the WAG54G, which might be different from your WRT54G. Currently, UPnP is disabled and the Router ports are a bit of a mystery, because they're forwarded to an IP address that's outside of the current DHCP Address Range! Once I got it working, I was reluctant to change it even though it looked anomalous.
The Firewall is on, with the iChat ports open that I listed in the previous post.
My two regular buddies are my sons, who both use Trillian Pro on a Windows machine. Works pretty well despite occasional freezes or garbled sound.
    Hope you get sorted soon.

  • Can Apple fix the 12 bit audio problem once and for all?

I have had persistent audio problems from I Life V3 all the way up to I Life 06. Sometimes it is synch issues. Sometimes it is audio dropping out. I have been through the various forums and applied the various remedies with some successs, some failure. The basic problem is that I have an extensive quantity of Mini DV tapes dating back to 1997, most recorded with 12 bit sound (prior to 2002). Apple's basic stance has been, you must use 16 bit sound or I Movie and/or I DVD won't work and . And proposes awkward workarounds. Basically placing the onus on it's own consumers. Why can't 12 bit sound support be included in I DVD 06 and these persistent audio issues put to rest once and for all? Is there some overwhelming technical reason why it cannot be done?

I don't know about overwhelming, but the DVD specification (which was not developed by Apple) calls for the audio to be sampled at 16-bit/48KHz (I think you might also be able to use 96KHz as well). This is what the software expects. If you choose to use another sample rate then the software may or may not be able to "fix" it in post. The real problem is that many camcorder manufactures set the audio to 12-bit by default.

  • Snow Leopard still cannot webcam using iChat and AIM?

Apple claimed that snow leopard will be able to use aim's server to control web chats when a peer-to-peer connection cannot be done. I purchased snow leopard on friday and I am trying to connect with my friend who has windows xp and aim 6.9 (we also experimented with aim 5.9). I dont get her screen and she does not get my screen (it just shows a black square) and yet it says "connected". With aim 5.9 we were able to hear each other but no video. Nothing with aim 6.9, just black.
Webcam works perfectly when we use oovoo or skype but I want to utilize the features of my mac and know that they are working instead of going through third-party applications.
Both of us have hardware firewalls on our ends (with windows and mac firewall disabled). All outbound ports are allowed, all inbound are blocked except for several ports which are defined in Port Forwarding.
    Please help me out
    Thanks

    Hi,
All outbound ports on both networks are opened to the public. Inbound ports to my network are only ports 3389 for remote desktop (to one of the windows machines on my network) and port 80 for a web server we host.
The reason I dont have any iChat ports opened up is because Apple announced that snow leopard will be able to use AIM's server as the video chat host when peer-to-peer calling is unavailable, which applies to my case.
We already tried initiating the video chat from Windows, it gives the same exact results when initiating the chat through the Macbook.
    Thank you

  • I don't have my Ichat and AIM configured right?

I set up an Ichat account. Created an AIM account but need help on how to have everything set because when I sign on my buddy doesn't come up and wen I get it up it isn't my AIM list. I would like Ichat to open and my buddie list to appear when I click on the Ichat Icon. I don't have the two working together properly? Can anyone help. I would like to set up the share screen option but can't even get my buddie menu to light up. Thanks.

    Hi,
You say you set an "iChat Account" AND an " AIM Account"
The two should be one and the same.
You can get an AIM Screen Name (Account) via several routes.
Apple have an Agreement with AIM that @mac.com ending names are Valid AIM Screen Names as well as being Apple IDs
The same goes for MobileMe (@Me.com ending) Names.
As long as the Passwords for these Apple IDs is no more that 16 characters (An AIM Server limit) you can use them in iChat and the AIM  for PC app (Or even AIM Express)
It used to be possible to have your Own Screen Name appear in your Own Buddy list
(With Multiple Logins this used to let you chat between two computers using the same Name but is no longer possible)
If you have two Screen Names they will have separate Buddy List with potentially different Buddies in each
There are ways of adding Buddies from one to another.
I am not entirely sure I have followed what you were trying to say.
If the above does not cover what you meant could you try again ?
It may pay to explain the step by step things you did in setting up both Names. (in iChat and on the Web)

  • Solve my corrupted audio problem for $$ and eternal gratitude

My video project has corrupted audio suddenly. I've read about other audio problems when exporting, but all I did was save the project while editing, no export. I have the prefs set to extract audio at pasteover, which I've done a lot of for this 2-camera wedding shoot. I also have the second audio track occasionally used for background music. All three tracks (video, audio 1, audio 2) on the timeline have corrupted audio for the entire length of the project. It sounds like a helicopter whirr was added, it's very choppy. Also, both cpus are maxxed out and the process monitor shows iMovie utilizing 180%+ consistently. When iMovie isn't running, it's in the single digits. As soon as I load iMovie the cpus max out. This hasn't happened the whole project, just recently. So what changed? I don't know. I've been doing the same thing the whole time, the pasteovers, the add titles, the add background track, saving the project every couple of minutes. Each time I've saved, it looks like it's listing off different files or clips, not just the changed clips. I've tried deleting the QT movie it created in the cache and let it recreate to see if that would help, but it didn't. Would deleting the files in the waveform cache help? I've got about 30 hours into this project already and would love to resurrect this audio if possible. Either that or it's Jim Beam and call it a day. I thought this was non-destructive editing, but apparently that's just the originals? That doesn't help much when the whole project audio goes in the toilet and I'm looking at redoing this whole project. Anyone who can fix this is getting a big ol' sloppy kiss on the mouth and an iTunes gift certificate.

I've never personally seen the audio problems you describe, but there's some things I'd try before giving up. As you've probably read, it's not unusual to have playback problems in projects containing complex audio. The odds for it seem to increased in QuickTime 7.
    1. Try opening the "TimeLine Movie.mov" that's inside the Cache folder of the project in QuickTime Player. If the audio plays okay there, the audio data is intact and you're seeing a playback anomaly in iMovie. (QuickTime Player may choke too, but don't conclude anything from that.)
To access the movie, Control-click on the project icon and choose "Show Package Contents".
    2. Try exporting ONLY the project audio to an AIFF file, then import THAT back into the project and replace the audio you have. That will "flatten" the audio and make it much easier to play. (To be safe, on a copy of the project.)
Or if you have QuickTime Pro, you might try extracting all the audio from the Timeline movie.
To export to an AIFF file, choose File > Export, click on QuickTime, set the popUp menu to "Expert Settings", press Share, then from the top popUp menu, choose "Sound to AIFF". Choose the level of quality you want from the bottom popUp menu, then Save.
What may be going on here is that extracting audio has created MANY audio files in the project, some possibly very large. (Each time we extract audio from a clip that is part of a Media file shared with other clips, iMovie extracts ALL the audio from that Media file, not just the audio of the selected clip.) To see what audio files the project contains, look in the Media folder of the project.
If you get this solved, please say how.
Oh, and if you haven't updated to iMovie 7.1, you might try that. There were improvements in handling multiple audio tracks, I read somewhere.
BTW, it's usually not a good idea to change things inside the project package. iMovie can get pretty confused. The Timeline movie is replaced each time we save, so that's not a big deal.

  • Ichat and AIM error

I can open ichat, but whenever I try to log in, it says that there was an error connecting to AIM. The message is:
    Auth:BadDbStatus
    Desiree

    Hi Desiree,
This might be a port problem.
iChat requires to log on to the AIM servers on port 5190 on the TCP protocol.
It also require the the UDP protocol is open for the same port for the Buddy list Database to be accessed.
This is most likely where the problem is.

  • Can't initiate a video conference from Mac to PC wtih iChat and AIM

I am using iChat on an iMac intel core duo and trying to video chat with my dad on a PC laptop using AIM 5.9. We can both invite the other to video chat, however when either one click to accept various things keep us from initiating the chat. One message we get says a firewall may be the problem. My firewall is turned off. He is running Norton. But we tried with that firewall turned off as well as the windows firewall tirned off. At the moment we are on the same network connected via a 2wire router (Myself wirelessly and he via ehternet). I have tried various settings with the router firewall including setting the PC to DMZ and the Mac to the settings specified on portforwarding.com.
When I initiate the conversation from the Mac he gets a brief flicker like the video window is opening and then it closes; meanwhile my computer says waiting for response until it gives up. When he initiates the video chat and I accept I get the message that the chat failed because I did not respond even thougth I clicked accept. He gets a mesage that the chat failed and the reason may be a firewall.
Any ideas on how to get this to work so that we are able to video chat. Also he will be returning home in a few days and using a linksys router.
Any help or ideas to try would be great

    Dear Ralph,
Sorry for the confusion, I did assume you were an Apple empoyee. Your knowledge about iChat is stunning. I appreciate your effort to help users by sharing your knowledge with such dedication. I do apologise.
    Regarding:
Port forwarding is being automated and static ip addresses will be generated automatically.
Let's call it redirection (the handshake indicates the port to forward to).
When you have NAT running in your home you have the entire Internet available to all your machines. What if you have a machine behind the NAT gateway that needs to be accessed from outside? This is where redirection comes in. Redirection allows incoming traffic to be sent to a machine behind the NAT gateway.
    An example:
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from any to any port 80 -> 192.168.1.20
This line redirects TCP port 80 (web server) traffic to a machine inside the network at 192.168.1.20. So, even though 192.168.1.20 is behind your gateway and inside your network, the outside world can access it.
The from any to any part of the above rdr line can be quite useful. If you know what addresses or subnets are supposed to have access to the web server at port 80, you can restrict them here:
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from 27.146.49.0/24 to any port 80 -> \
    192.168.1.20
This will redirect only the specified subnet. Note this implies you can redirect different incoming hosts to different machines behind the gateway. This can be quite useful. For example, you could have users at remote sites access their own desktop computers using the same port and IP address on the gateway as long as you know the IP address they will be connecting from:
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from 27.146.49.14 to any port 80 -> \
    192.168.1.20
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from 16.114.4.89 to any port 80 -> \
    192.168.1.22
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from 24.2.74.178 to any port 80 -> \
    192.168.1.23
A range of ports can also be redirected within the same rule:
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from any to any port 5000:5500 -> \
    192.168.1.20
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from any to any port 5000:5500 -> \
    192.168.1.20 port 6000
rdr on tl0 proto tcp from any to any port 5000:5500 -> \
    192.168.1.20 port 7000:*
These examples show ports 5000 to 5500 inclusive being redirected to 192.168.1.20. In rule #1, port 5000 is redirected to 5000, 5001 to 5001, etc. In rule #2, the entire port range is redirected to port 6000. And in rule #3, port 5000 is redirected to 7000, 5001 to 7001, etc.
Static ip addresses are necissary to ensure that the router does not hand out the same ip twice, hence my question about the data transferred when a user connects his new mac to the one wich was set previously by the user (or other user). I think this information is explained in the Network Traffic Analysis you direct iChat to when they are asked to port forward (manually). I do not know the url by heart but it should be a known link to you.
    Regarding auto response:
Sometimes you have to consider whether a very direct (and unelegant) interveniance in the software outweights the malfunction of an application that is causing a lot of trouble and inconvinience to Mac users. Personally I think that in this case the risk of being disturbed (still the same as anyone who askes for attention using chat or even phone) outweighs the much more irritating and incomprehensible "user did not respond" message and thus not being able to use one of the main features promised and promoted by Apple.
    Yes life is inconsistent,
at least life is not sold to you.
    Regards,
    JPM

  • Trouble with AIM and IChat! Cannot connect to IChat, and AIM keeps crashing

I just got my Macbook, and installed AIM. However, it often says "AIM shut down unexpectedly." Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
Also, I want to use IChat, but i try to connect, and I can for a few seconds, and then it says "Connection with AIM lost." I'd appreciate any suggestions or advice!

I used to have the same AIM problem. Have you tried Adium instead? If you haven't heard of it, it's an instant messaging program that uses your AIM account but is specifically designed for OS X. It looks nicer too.
    Hope it helps!

  • IChat and AIM

How can I make AIM for Windows do a video chat with iChat? It must work with Leopard and later versions of OS X and Windows Vista/7. Ideally XP as well.
I downloaded the latest version of AIM on a PC and tried to do a video chat with an iChat account, and was told that the other party needed to upgrade to the latest AIM for this to work. I was offered to invite them to download it. Text chatting worked fine.
I read about having to turn off the real time protocol or something like that, but I found nothing like that in the settings or UI which is very bare bones.

It is a bit strange, but it seems to be working in theory. I am in Norway, and I was able to connect from AIM to iChat in Thailand and the USA. But I was not able to connect between to machines on the local network! That is what I tested before as well. Sometimes iChat would give me an error log, one of which is included below, sometimes AIM would say "Unknown error" and sometimes both programmes would be stuck waiting for a connection even though I accepted on the receiving end.

  • Can't Video Chat with iChat and AIM for PC

I recently bought a MacBook Pro and I'm using iChat (obviously). I've tried many times to have a One-Way Video chat with my friend who is using Windows XP and the newest version of AIM for Windows. When we connect to the video chat I can see myself but on his end he only sees a black screen, he is unable to see me. Help??

    Hi,
You could try Limiting the Bandwidth (ichat Menu > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth Limit) to 500kbps. (Possibly try 200kbps as well)
If the latest version of AIM on PC includes the "Real Time" Option, it should turned Off. (It is a feature to send Text as you type but effects the Video end as well).
Also read through this Users Tip http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1968438
There is no guarantee of success I am afraid, despite both apps supposedly being compatible.

  • Serious video streaming problems (ichat and slingbox)

My 1.8Ghz SSD Macbook Air (10.5.2) doesn't seem to be able to handle even low quality video streaming. After a few of minutes of viewing, the image on the Slingplayer or from incoming ichat conference starts freezing and the laptop becomes almost impossible to control (skipping cursor movements, incredibly slow typing on ichat).
I can see what happens to the CPU thanks to Menumeters: one of the two cores stops completely (0% activity), probably to avoid excessive temperature increase.
The bottom line though is that I can't use ichat video or my slingbox (both perform very well on my other Macbook).
Is there a way to fix this?

Sounds like a heat issue that others are running into. Not good

  • PROBLEM: iChat and Spaces

I have iChat open in one Space, but when I'm in another space I get an incoming message window. Now, if I wanted iChat in that space, I would have put it there.
How do I keep it from invading my current non-iChat Space?

What i do, (whilst using tabbed chats) is not assign iChat a space, but open it in Space 1. The first chat that you/someone else initiates, keep that in space 1.
Then when you get a new chat, whichever space you are in, the alert will come up, when you are ready to chat, when you click on the accept button, it will whizz you into Space 1 and add the new chats to the existing ones.
If you get the first chat when not in space 1, it will open in the space you are in, but just drag that to Space 1, and from then on, all new chats will join the others!
If you have iChat assigned always to Space 1 in prefs, then whenever you get a new message, you will get spun to Space 1 (annoying).
    Hope this helps!
